How do you think certain books end up being "essentials" in early literature education? I'm not from the US but I got the picture that Catcher in the Rye is one of those. I'm not necessarily disagreeing - I remember it being a good book, just wondering how it ended up on the list.
While we're at this, are there some essential books in elementary school education that you think should not be there? At least my experience (in Russian classes) was that as a child it was super hard to find old classics interesting or even understandable - only in my 20s I look at them in a whole different (better) light. That might be a risk in general, because old classics might cause a turnoff towards literature and reading in general, which would be a shame. A mix of both moderns and classics (with explanation on why classics are on the list) would be a good mix in my opinion (which was then my experience in Finnish education)
