Feeling disheartened looking at assessment data right now. We have 15% of our students at grade level. 85% are below grade level and most are 2-3 grade levels behind. We’re a majority low income school district. We spend millions and millions for intervention programs and rarely see significant progress. The real problem for student achievement is wealth inequality. We implement these complex programs that may or may not work, when we really need something like a $5,000 - $10,000 cash incentive for graduating high school. That, or some other kind of UBI program tied to certain metrics. We’re overcomplicating education. Wealth disparities and structural racism cause poor outcomes. Paying for expensive contractors for some shiny program may not necessarily improve outcomes.
