Education and corporate internet companies

Recently I was trying to find the word "accelerator" using google. To my surprise, the 1st page of google search results does not even try to tell what is this (1 entry was relatively close to what physicists use). About 30-40 years ago, it would be hard to find somebody who does not know what is this. Some non-commercial projects (like encycloreader.org) give the correct answer, but only a few know about similar specialized resources. This is a rather dangerous trend when the main search engines prioritize company names and various memes over general knowledge.
