I have a 10th grade English student who could either fail or pass the class based on a few points on an assignment. I try to keep things fair and let the rubrics and the math do their job. However, let's be honest, there is enough subjectivity in ELA that I could swing things in either direction and be completely in the clear. Please take a look at the pros/cons list below and give me an idea of what you would do in my situation!
Cons of failing the student:
Potential lack of motivation from the student next semester, resentment towards the content area or the class -- the usual.
Pros of failing the student:
Though I have a positive rapport with this student, I am bothered by some of the comments he has made, including "it does not matter what I do; I'll end up passing anyway." I am afraid that letting him pass will reinforce the idea that just showing up and putting in extremely minimal effort is a way to get through life. He is also periodically extremely disrespectful, so I am concerned that I would be reinforcing that it is ok to disrespect authority figures and things will be fine in the end. Though he put in some effort towards the end of the semester, he completely slacked off for the majority of it -- again, what does this reinforce if I pass him? That it's ok to be lazy as long as you put your best foot forward 10% of the time at the very end of an endeavor?
Let me know your thoughts!
