Alternatives to Wikispaces and PBWorks?

When Wikispaces went, I jumped onto PBWorks. Unfortunately, the site seems to be left unattended by the developers and needs a desperate security upgrade.

What is awesome about it:

  • ability to add student accounts without the need for email address
  • students can create their own pages (they use this as their portfolio)
  • a website feel which is only accessible to those invited by the teacher
  • create as many webspaces as one likes. I use it for each class I have. It is also a great way to keep records of past classes.
  • it is free! But I am willing to pay for something that does all of the above.

I have searched and tried many alternatives including Canva, Moodle, Seesaw, Edmodo and other small wiki sites but none do the simple tasks of the above.

Any ideas?

Happy Zoom Anniversary!?!

Hey everyone! I can't believe it's been a full year since we started taking classes remotely. I find it more difficult to stay attentive and self-motivated when taking classes online, but over the past year, I've developed some habits and practices that have really helped my stay organized that I share in this video! I'd love to know what some of your tips and tricks for online school have been!

Economics or liberal arts

Hey i need help choosing my major. I love everything about liberal arts psychology, anthropology, philosophy... and i'm really good at critical thinking. But I'm confused I don't if i should study liberal arts or economics considering future careers and income. I'm saying economics cuz i heard it has a lot of variety like psychology and law.. so it's better than business or computer science for me. What do you think?

Leaving My Apprenticeship

I’m 18 and currently doing a finance apprenticeship, the pay is minimum so obviously crap, and the work isn’t even that amazing. I’m not loving it and I wouldn’t leave without a backup plan but I’m not sure it’s the best thing to do. I’ve been there 3 months, which I know isn’t that long but it just really isn’t for me, office jobs are very clearly not my thing, I debated staying to finish my course but that doesn’t finish until at least next year, I’m not exactly sure when. So I really want some advice, thank you :)

Do I have to have a LinkedIn profile?

Hi!

I’m in the process of looking for a new job. For many reasons (including privacy issues), I’d rather not have a LinkedIn profile.

If most employers direct you to their own websites to apply, do you even need a LinkedIn profile? It seems unnecessary to me but I’d like to hear some thoughts.

Thanks!

My little brother, who I fucking adore, has terrible grades but everytime I ask to see them he says "the website is down." I don't know if he's putting in the wrong password or if it's actually true. Can someome let me know if he's bullshitting?

EDIT: the moment I said "I'm going to mom about this so you better just tell me instead" and suddenly the website works again

*Sorry for the giant post

First off I would like to say that I'm not sure if this is the correct sub for questions like this, and if it isn't, what would be a good sub to post this on. If it is, then here is my post.

Hey there, you can call me Ace. I'm turning 13 soon and am currently in 6th grade. I am supposed to be in 7th based on my age but my family moved from Russian when I was about six years old, and because I wasn't too familiar with the English language, I went to kindergarten instead of first grade so I could learn English better and faster. Which is why I'm about 6-9 months older than most of my classmates.

I guess I'll cut straight to the questions. I currently live in the NYC area and am dubbed a "gifted" kid. I guess you can say so, I read books like don Quixote, pride and prejudice, Anna Karenina, and war and peace at the age of 11. I've also learned multiple coding languages such as C#, C++, java, JavaScript, and python at a very young age and built my own PC when I was 9. I managed to finish algebra 1 and geometry in 5th grade by self teaching myself, and I'm almost done with Algebra 2. And finally I did chemistry and physics at around the same mid high school level about a year ago. The reason I am saying all of this isn't to brag, but for you to imagine how boring 6th where they are still teaching us stuff like fractions and when we are reading Roald Dahl's childrens' books.

So, my family decided to move to Florida around 6 months ago as my dad had some job opportunities there. My parents also decided to enroll me in a private school where I can be more academically challenged as they offer advanced classes and I might even be able to skip a few grades there. However, due to uncontrollable circumstances we are going to have to stay in New York for around a year and a half.

I cannot bear it anymore though, as arrogant as this may sound, I believe myself to be wasting my life sitting through the classes to the point where I just don't go sometimes as I learn absolutely nothing and my school doesn't offer honors classes until 7th grade, which I checked on, they are also pretty easy. I was wondering what my best bet would be, I can go to a private school that will allow me to take even more advanced classes if I can find a good scholarship that I can apply to, which will preferably cover most of the costs. The only problem being is that my parents haven't received a green card yet, even though its been over 6 years, which means we aren't citizens yet and most scholarships require citizenship.

There is always the option of self teaching myself even more through free online resources but even that has some problems, like me having to waste my own time when physical school comes back and sit in the classroom all day doing nothing, and there won't be any competition in the school. The second problem being myself, I have a passion for knowledge and always want to know more, but that only takes you so far and eventually you just give up, I have to use extra time on top of all the stuff I get from school. If I come back from school at 2:30 by the time I'm home it will be 3 pm. I will then have to eat until about 3:30, half hour will be spent on homework (usually I have to spend around 5 minutes but lets take 5 hours in case I do choose the honors classes). I'll have around 2 hours of other extracurricular classes so I will be home by 6 to actually relax. At which point I have to spend a good 2-3 hours teaching myself something, as I find if I spend less time than that I don't learn as efficiently. Which leaves me with a good 2-3 hours to do whatever I want, which isn't bad but when there is no one encouraging you or helping you out its terrible. I've tried this before and I start feeling hopeless and gloomy every time, as I have nothing to persuade me to do this any further. I'm wondering what my best bet would be to get a better education as I hate wasting 6-8 hours a day on something that I learn nothing from. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

School Counselor - Job Requirement Question

Hello All,

First time posting in this sub. I have a question about the requirements to become a school counselor that I am looking for some insight on.

In short, my wife is looking to switch career focus a little bit by becoming a school counselor. She has a Masters in Family Therapy and a Bachelors degree in Psychology. If she wanted to become a licensed school counselor, does this usually require additional course work, etc? Since she has a masters in a similar counseling field, does that help?

I know this differs by location but I would imagine most states are similar. We are Indiana, US.

TIA

Completed my bachelor degree (Economics and finance) in late November 2020, after 4 + plus months of job searching, am starting to consider applying for a master's degree ( MSc in finance or Economics).

Is it worth for a recent undergraduate with little job experience to apply for a master's degree?

What do you think of having 3 teachers per school year that swap classes every period and always teach the same material?

This way teachers would have much less work preparing.

The program would have to be divided in a way that wouldn't be an issue to change the order.

Example: Let's say 6 classes, 3 teachers. Divide the program in 3 and let each teacher always teach the same part.

On first trimester- teacher A would have class A and B. And teach them part 1.
Teacher B would have class C and D and teach part 2.
Teacher C would have class E and F and teach part 3.

On second trimester - teacher A would have class C and D and teach them part 1.
Teacher B would have class E and F and teach part 2.
Teacher C would have class A and B and teach part 3.

On 3rd trimester - teacher A would have class E and F and teach part 1.
Teacher B class A and B part 2.
Teached C class C and D part 3.

Best Strategies for Early Age Language Learning?

I am currently hoping to teach my child French, and I was hoping for some feedback on how he may best be acquainted with a new language. I myself try to speak it with him, but I want to give him small lessons/learning tools that may help to push him to want to learn on his own. I am currently considering a host of online modules that have sprung up since COVID, as well as some physical toys that may help him visualize words more effectively. My intuition tells me that learning a language is always more effective if it starts as early as possible. As teachers and education experts, what are some methods/tools that you may recommend?

Thinking of Leaving Teaching

Hi! I've been teaching for about 4 years now. I love teaching itself, the kids, my coworkers, but everything outside of these areas have been really getting to me. I taught in AZ where I received no benefits and no health confidentiality. We had to get our preventative checkups done at the school, so we had nurses take our blood samples, blood pressure, weight, etc., at the school for everyone to see and hear. There's so much more. Anyway, the second school, there was a huge lack of resources. I paid for everything out of pocket, and still got no benefits. I moved states where I now receive benefits, and that's amazing. I get paid less, but at least I get health insurance. However, I'm thinking of calling it quits. I'm interested in a career where I can grow, advance in opportunities, make more money, etc. I'm thinking of going into insurance because I have about 3 years of recruiting experience. What do most teachers do when they want to find better growth opportunities? Thanks!

My 3 year degree has now become the big wall that obstructs my future

So, my lack of proper judgment led me to take up a three year undergraduate degree in Computer science. (Bachelor of Science) It is pretty normal in our country but I wanted to pursue a Master's degree focusing on design/animation in North America. As it turns out- they only accept 4 year undergraduate degrees. I checked to see if there are any ways to make up for this. But I'm at a dead end. I'm not sure if this is the sub I'm supposed to go to for such things. But, is there like any chance, any chance that I can be eligible for a good Master's program in North America?

Recommendations for online reading games at the early elementary level?

Hi, everyone! I’m currently enrolled in college, but I volunteer a couple times a week by tutoring students remotely on Zoom.

I have a five-year-old student whose mother recently asked me if I know of any reading games since her son is beginning to get bored of https://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com (a good resource, btw!) and isn’t focusing when he plays it. I don’t have much communication with other tutors, and the program I work through doesn’t provide suggested resources and usually focuses on developing math skills.

Does anyone here know of any games I could tell her about? Most of the ones I’ve managed to find are either a) just playing videos for the kids or b) brief one-time activities rather than a continuous game with a profile.

Thank you!!!

How should the hagwon-dependent education system of South Korea change?

So South Korean students are very dependent on private education, or hagwons, and this, in my opinion, leads to very obvious problems.

The first one is, as private education is much harder to control than public education, children go to hagwons from elementary school ages and spend most of their time in hagwons or doing homework. IIRC, there is a regulation for this, but many hagwons ignore or find a loophole and nullify the regulation. This leads to students having less to no happy childhood and struggle with stress and lack of relationship and parental care from young ages.

The second problem is the financial one. These hagwons basically cost a lot (average cost of $350 are spent to a month per child) . This gives a financial burden to parents, contributing to the low birth rate in Korea.

How can this problem be solved? Or is it a problem? I'd love to hear your opinions on this.

Tuition-Free education opportunity for CA residents over 18 (promise it's not a scam)

Hello r/education!

My name is Shane, I'm a Field Rep Organizer for a union (SEIU-UHW). My union partnered with an organization called Futuro Health not too long ago to create a program that offers tuition-free education in a few select healthcare careers, which change over time and are expanding to other roles within healthcare as interest grows.

I'm all honesty and for full clarity, I am being asked to meet a goal for applicants to sign up for this program. There is not a limit on how many people can sign up however. My issue is that 2 of the 4 current programs offered require in - person clinical labs and those are contracted to specific areas within Sacramento and North Hollywood. Our union spans the whole state, and my work area is contained to the north state (Redding area and surrounding towns), and a lot of the people I have contact with up there as potential applicants only have interest in 1 of these 2 programs, which means they would have to drive many miles multiple times a week and there is unfortunately a lack of interest in the small pool of candidates I've had the luxury of talking with.

The reason I reach out to reddit at this time is because I am assuming most of the users on reddit are tech savvy, or potentially some of you live in the areas specified above.

There are 4 programs : * Medical Assistant (requires in person clinical labs) * Dental Assistant (requires in person clinical labs) * Health IT (100% online) * Care Coordinator (100% online)

These programs are all mostly online, and two of them also require the in person labs. There is a small list of requirements to apply, but if you are 18 and live in CA with no felony charges/can pass a background check, you're likely applicable. Applying takes only a moment BUT to get the tuition waived you need to be referred by a current member of SEIU-UHW. I have consent from a handful of members to provide the necessary info of theirs to those interested in this.

Some small details: although it's tuition free, there is still some small payments to make. There is a one - time $100 registration fee, and continuous $20/month membership fee during your time in the program. If you are doing any in person clinical labs you will need up to date immunizations at your own cost and a $77 drug test. The MA program requires prerequisites of anatomy and physiology, and if you don't have that they offer it for $50 (called a Jump Start course).

You can look at some of these programs on their site, just search online for Futuro Health and that will take you to their site.

If you are interested in applying and want to get a seriously amazing deal on healthcare education, or you just want to help a fellow redditor in his career by getting his numbers to goal, please pm and/or chat me on here.

Note to mods: I sent a message to the mod team about this post on Friday and didn't get a response. I don't think this breaks any rules since it's not spam. Please message me if this post breaks any rules of this sub, before removing it.

Universities are about exploring new perspectives and learning to think critically. So why are SJWs that accept a single narrative you're not allowed to criticize there? They don't belong in a university.

You know the type. Criticize anything about their movement and their ideology and you're bigoted in some way. That doesn't automatically mean their ideas are wrong, but generally if an idealogue is afraid of being scrutinized it means there are probably more holes in the thinking than they care to admit?

People go to universities to get educated, and that involves learning to be critical and thinking in more abstract ways. So why are they cesspools of these self-righteous, virtue-signalling ideologues that won't consider any alternative views, any amendment to their narrative and try to shut down those that say otherwise? Such people don't belong in the halls of a university.

Are prestigious colleges really so much better than everywhere else?

I recently watched Varsity Blues, and it really stuck out to me how much they were hammering on the point that prestigious colleges aren't anything particularly special. I'm willing to believe this, but I wish they would have given some evidence to support their somewhat counterintuitive claim.

People on reddit seemed to like my last analysis of college admissions, so I thought I would do a review of what economics research says about the value of prestigious colleges. I've written a more detailed analysis elsewhere, which I encourage you to read, but here's the quick summary:

The Educational Value

It's somewhat widely believed among economists that college is basically not about human capital formation at all--it's all about signaling intelligence and conformity to employers, and learning is completely unimportant. I don't 100% buy this, but I think it definitely has some points in its favor. For instance, there isn't a big movement of people trying to sneak into the back of Yale lectures, even though doing so is really easy (some classes are even available free online); therefore, the actual education part of elite schooling can't be what people are so eager to get.

There are studies that show increases in critical thinking ability in college, but it seems like there's a hard limit to how much scores improve. I think it's unlikely elite schools would really be able to boost your critical thinking much higher than other schools given this data

The Credential/Connections

Graduates of elite schools make a lot more money, but studies comparing students who were accepted at elite schools but chose not to attend with those who did attend finds no effect on income for the general population but a positive effect for students from low-income backgrounds. I think there may be some reason to believe the study is systematically understating the benefits of elite education, but not in a way that will shift the data considerably. The credentials from an elite school are particularly important for fields like finance and consulting, or top grad schools.

Conclusion

It seems like the case for elite education is pretty muddy. The main benefits are increases in social mobility for students from lower-income backgrounds and those students who want to go into high-prestige fields. Overall, this seems like a conclusion college applicants can find comforting. Elite schools are a goal worth working towards, but students who fall victim to the inherent randomness of the admissions process can rest easy in the knowledge that smart, driven people seem to do pretty well no matter where they go.

I hope you all find this helpful, and I'm curious to know your thoughts. Are there factors I didn’t consider?

Mask Recall in Quebec

Hey all! I'm a teacher from Quebec, Canada. The medical masks we wear are being supplied by the government. I just found out that our masks have been recalled because they have a potential for long-term lung damage.

Our schools are going to take them back and give us a different type of medical mask, but I was down to my last two...

They care so little about teachers here and it's just so frustrating. Here we are risking our health teaching from the heart every day, but we receive faulty masks that will cause long-term health problems. Some days we are considered essential, some days we do not matter. Still waiting on my vaccine, yet they give them to parents in the general population who are working from home instead.

I apologize for the rant, but I am frustrated and terrified of what kind of consequences this might have.

RTI experiences?

TLDR; in your experience, can you give any helpful examples of your RTI process/RTI related work in PLCs at your school?

For context, I teaching secondary science. Graduated in Spring 2020, but have worked long-term sub positions this year. This week, I have an interview to start next fall and they have asked me to prepare a 10 minute presentation for the start of my interview regarding RTI. The question is along the lines of "The school is implementing an RTI class period for all students next year. How would you identify students who need additional time/support in your classroom and explain how your PLC would use the time to support students"

I feel like this is a very basic question and I that I have a solid understanding of the RTI process as a whole. However, in the past year at my sub positions and when I was student teaching, I have never had the opportunity to be in a PLC or do RTI- or really any data gathering in general. Would anyone be willing to share their experiences with RTI/RTI work in the PLCs? Even RTI experiences at the elementary level would be really helpful!

Thank you!!!

I’ve heard typing used to be standard curriculum in schools. With the growth of computer use, why would this not be in curriculum anymore?

Ways to collect homework grades electronically

Hello fellow educators,

I have been a teacher now for 8 years, and years ago I used classroom clickers(These clickers) to get a grade from students. The software has since changed, and I am finding a lot of difficulty in setting it up. Is there another system anyone has found/used to collect grades from each class? I teach math and would like to use the data of how many students pass/fail or need remediation later, so collecting the information would be the best.

I thought about using Google forms to collect grades, which would keep things tidy, but not all students have phones. I am looking to see if there is another option I am missing.

I have been using a lot of completion grades lately, especially during the pandemic, but still want to know how the kids are doing.

University physics 2

I’m taking university physics 2 covering electromagnetism, wave mechanics, and optics. This is is a calculus based physics class (at least it should be). So far the professor has skipped any calculus and sticks to the algebraic formulas for the physics equations/relationships.

Now that I’ve set the scene, here is the problem. As easy as this prof is taking it on us, in a class that should be much more difficult, nearly half the class has been creating a major disturbance over what they perceive as being “too hard.” They have: submitted multiple complaints to the dean, taken hours of lecture time to complain, and accused the prof of “messing with people’s families and people’s futures.”

We are all part of a chat group on GroupMe. On these chats, the same students have made it clear that they don’t study outside of class at all. They also have been caught cheating on an exam. The prof let them retake the exam. And yet they still condemn him for what they consider to be “too hard.”

During the last class disruption one person unmuted their microphone and said, “I speak for the entire class when I say that this material is too difficult.” So, after months of silence, I spoke up and said,” you don’t speak for me.” And I illustrated my perspective, as I’ve done here. I told them that I work 40+ hours a week and still make time to study outside of class. That I put in the work to understand the material. I told them that they can’t expect to master every concept in the 1 hour 20 min class period and then submit complaints against the prof when they fail. I told we all owe it to ourselves to commit time outside of class to studying. They all unmuted and started screaming and hollering at me that they are taking four classes and it’s impossible to study outside of class. But I am also taking 4 classes in addition to my job. I just have no social life right now. But that’s the necessary sacrifice. A sacrifice they seem to not be willing to make.

It bothers me to see a good professor bending over backward to help these students, just to have them not put in the time to master the material. They seem to want a degree handed to them. They don’t respect the process of earning a passing grade. They got caught cheating and now have his full attention during exams/quizzes, making it more difficult to cheat (we use Lockdown Browser). They got away with it for a while because he wasn’t watching the videos of us taking the exam. But eventually they did something stupid and all got the same grade on an exam and finished at exactly the same time (10 mins into a 2 hour exam).

The professor didn’t create this curriculum. They are basically holding him personally responsible for how “hard” the class is. When this class should actually be much harder, and would be if he covered the calculus based parts of the course.

I just needed to rant. I’m an electrical engineering major. And this is the first taste of electrical/magnetic theory I’ve gotten. Which makes me really excited and I love the material. This makes me enjoy studying. And I believe that helps me grasp the material.

I’m at a complete loss of why these students are in this class if they obviously hate the material so much.

Who has experience with a preschooler skipping a large part of kindergarten?

In our country kindergarten starts the day preschoolers turn four. They start in grade 0, advance to grade one and two in the next school years, and then enter elementary school.

Our four year old is pretty advanced and, although he just started grade 0 last November, he has now been forwarded to grade two, and will likely start elementary school in September.

This is both exiting and scary for all involved. It doesn’t seem at all common to forward a student at this age, and we can’t seem to find real life people, with real life experiences with this.

Have any of you been in our situation? How did your child do? Was he/she happier? Did he/she fit in easily?

I know in theory my sweet little boy wil be with children that are closer to his developmental age, but they wil be so much bigger and older... I am worried 😧 I just hope he will be ok...

Anyone know what you need to complete in middle school homeschool to go back to public school?

I'm going to public school next year.

These are the courses I took

-6th grade math, 2 segments -6th grade science, 2 segments -6th grade ELA, 1 segment -7th grade math, 2 segments -7th grade science, 2 segments -7th grade ELA, 1 segment -8th grade civics, 2 segments -8th grade math, 2 segments -8th grade science, 2 segments -8th grade ELA, 2 segments

I'm nervous about ELA and history. My mom read somewhere that I only needed to take 1 segment of ELA and only needed to take civics but I think she might've been wrong. I used FLVS.

I really don't want to homeschool again. I've hated it and was horribly sad for about two years, one of the factors being homeschool. I'm scared that if it ends up not working out then I'm either gonna have to work my ass off to no end during the summer or homeschool again. If I have to do the summer then I'll do it but I wouldn't be able to stand homeschooling again. I have a bit of anxiety and am in tears just thinking about what will happen. Does anyone have any information on this? I'm so scared

Virtual STEM activities for kids.

Hey educators, I am working on a virtual makerspace platform for parents and teachers to do activities and teach STEM to kids. We are trying to teach kids critical thinking and other 21st century skills that they might not learn in school.

Not only that stem activities is something we have seen a lot of teachers buy supplies out of their pocket. We want to make a platform where they can do these activities, have clear learning objectives and prepare kids better.

I'd appreciate it if you guys can take a look and sign up for our early beta.

We are looking for early adopters to help shape the product and be part of something they can be proud of.

Engineer (EE) vs Developing Artist

Hi there, so a little introduction:

I’m 24 years old and have been flip flopping around with what I want to do with life. I’ve tried going to university in Canada Ontario for biochemistry and then later physics, I couldn’t get through the first semester of either. Wasn’t the concepts that where difficult, but I found I switched my classes around and it overall destroyed my ability to keep up. These both occurred at age 22 and 23. I feel really guilty that I haven’t accomplished anything academically. Previously at 18 I was in electrical engineering technology at Mohawk college and same thing happened couldn’t finish the semester but it was due to being in a car accident and I needed a break after the 40 hours of being a student and working 40 hours.

Current: Here I am at 24 and I’m thinking, I want to either purse becoming an artist whether it’s painting or digital. Or going back to school and doing electrical engineering technology, I loved it! Like genuinely but I feel that I’ve developed a very unhealthy relationship with post-secondary education, and I fear wasting my own time and my spouses time. My boyfriend, did nursing and we made a decision I’d work while he finished nursing and now it’s my turn to focus on career development. Which I feel like I’ve floundered tbh. I would love to do both art and engineering and take a diploma transfer to degree pathway in EE or related disciplines. However, I’m aware that it would take minimum 5 years to become a full EE and I’d be 29 by the time I’m finished, and entering the workforce properly. I’m taking a security guard course right now, and figure I’ll do it part time and develop my artistic abilities or go to college( community colleges for those in America and maybe other countries) and do art still but it’s not at the same rate of development.

Potential indicators:

Engineering

-I’m great at math, calculus is awesome -physics is not as strong, mainly speaking at the university level. I couldn’t figure out how one equation turned into another, but I believe this may be because I only have a base understanding of calculus from Calculus and Vectors from high school with a final grade of 86%. I don’t know how much this would impact me though at the community college level at a 3 year course starting form an algebra understanding and ending in 2nd year university level of math and EE concepts and physics.

Art -I’m a natural at it, and develops fast.

Final note: eventually I do want to work for myself, I understand that Artist have to be entrepreneurs. While most EEs end up working for other people, and after around 10 years or so can do consulting. From what I’ve read anyways.

If you’ve gotten this far, thank you and I appreciate any tips.

Research Volunteers Needed!

My friend is a doctoral candidate at the University of Kansas and is looking for faculty mentors and graduate students being mentored for research about mentors and giving advice.

All participants must be at least 18 years of age

-Graduate students who have completed at least 3 years of graduate school and worked at least one year with your current advisor are eligible to participate.

-Faculty mentors who have formally mentored at least 5 graduate students through the completion of their graduate degree programs are eligible to participate.

Interviews will be audio-recorded, last approximately 45 to 90 minutes and all answers are confidential.

There is little to no harm that will come to participants by volunteering for the study. The discussion of personal/professional stressors and struggles could cause some emotional strain, but no more than participants would experience in their daily lives. Participants will be volunteering for a study that will be used to better understand their experiences and help practitioners improve programs and resources for formal mentoring programs. This study received IRB approval to conduct this research.

Contact Abigail Kingsford if interested in participating (contact info is below).

Thanks for your consideration.

Redesigning Blackboard

Disclaimer: I do not work for Blackboard. This is simply a self-initiated passion project.

Hello! I'm a junior UX designer conducting a project in which I redesign Blackboard for both teachers and students alike due to an overwhelming consensus that the Blackboard interface offers a dissatisfying and stressful experience. I’ve already conducted a total of 27 interviews with nine students in order to identify common pain points surrounding the current Blackboard and use that insight to create a more user-friendly experience. To complete the picture, I’ll need the perspective of educators as well.

What participation will look like: three one-on-one Zoom interviews, each about 20-30 minutes long and 1-2 weeks apart. In the first interview, I’ll be asking you a range of questions covering your professional experience as well as your experience with Blackboard. In the last two interviews, you’ll be testing prototypes of my redesign. All interviews would involve you sharing your screen and consenting to me recording the interview (for the sole purpose of being able to take comprehensive notes on your comments/feedback after the interview). The recording will deleted immediately after I’m done taking notes. No sensitive information, such as your name or the institution you work for, will be released in the publication of the final project.

I’m posting on this subreddit to ask teachers and professors that use Blackboard to PM me if you’re interested in participating. Thank you!

Earning a GED with severe memory loss?

I have severe memory loss, and it's extremely hard to retain information (easier to retain hands on information. I plan to become a machinist, which is mostly hands on.)

I didn't go to high school due to bullying, father having a near fatal stroke, suicide attempt due to all that, and mental illness. My mom pulled me out, and no tutors would deal with me for long.

This is humiliating to admit, but 6th grade is the last time I went to school... I don't even know division. I promise that I'm not stupid.

I ended up with CPTSD, plus a TBI. Both caused memory loss. We haven't succeeded in curing it either. Despite all types of doctors, mental treatments, medications, etc.

My mom had her reasons, so please don't comment about her.

I just need help figuring out what to do. I've been trying to study for over 5 years with little success. From what I've read online, a high school diploma or GED is required. I'm not sure what to do...

What is the workload like? What are some careers you were able to go into because of this degree?

Can you use the same curriculum to teach language to both ESL kids and native English speakers (also kids)?

I was hired to develop a curriculum for ESL students (for an app). I created one based around the CEFR levels, focusing on gradually building vocabulary and grammar skills.

My employer then abruptly changed their target market and casually mentioned their focus will now be on native English speakers (but will eventually return to ESL students).

In theory, could the same curriculum work for both? I know language acquisition is very different when it's a native language versus a second language, but since it's for kids, could it theoretically work for both?

Since the focus is on building up vocabulary and practicing grammar, which can be helpful to both native speakers and foreign language learners, I'm hoping it somehow might, but I can just feel it that I'm missing something.

Can you see one curriculum being okay for both? Are there any obvious issues I should be on the lookout for?

How much more work is an "online degree" (FAU)?

I decided to go back and finish my last 2 years of school (late 20's) but have a full time job (and kids) now -- I'm in no rush so I figured I would just go back online and take a class here and there at night or early morning but remember in high school I had to take a semester online and it was nothing short of 10x the work load for the same classes.

I may try and make an early or late class on campus and just deal with the time constraints, but if online classes seem to have a similar work load I would rather just go online

With covid, I've been missing doing work, studying, and interacting in a social setting in and out of the classroom. I feel like I'm way more productive when I work around others. I also don't find Zoom to be all that engaging when I use it with peers. So I've been developing a virtual hangout website to work with others in a safe and easy way called Herefm.

I just wanted to start a discussion on what some people's favorite features are in a video chat. I'm trying to figure out what works and what doesn't work for connecting with others in this way. The Importance of Alumni Networks in Education

Whether you are planning to go to college or already enrolled in college (high schools may even have them), one of the best things you can do for yourself is tap into the alumni network. Nearly every school has one and if you look at college as an investment, an alumni network is one of the best returns on investment available to you.

Many students look at college as a means to getting a job - this is not a value judgement. In that sense, college is a stepping stone to another phase of life. Tap into the alumni network to make sure that the college stepping stone is as effective as possible

Alumni networks are typically groups of people who have graduated from a certain institution. To be sure, most institutions have official alumni networks but also have some sort of unofficial alumni network. Official alumni networks typically require official membership alongside a membership fee. As a member of the official alumni network, you may get benefits like access to certain school facilities, invitations to social events, sporting event tickets, or other programs offered by the institution. If you are not a member, then your benefits may be limited. Whether or not to join is a personal decision. For example, do you live close enough to the institution that access to facilities matters? Likewise, do you live close enough for tickets to a sporting event to motivate you? Are you interested in attending these social events? Personally, I lived far away from my institution once I graduated and I was more interested in socializing in different ways so I never joined. Despite this, I recognized the incredible professional opportunities afforded by an alumni network.

To that end, I benefited greatly from my institutions' unofficial alumni networks. Even if you are not a member of the official alumni network, that does not preclude you from interacting with alums. Successful alums often want to hire people from their alma mater and they don’t care if you are in the official club or not. As a professor, I have had so many industry professionals ask me to put out a call for internships and tell me that they have a job opening they’d like to fill with a fellow alum. Incidentally, the students who seemed to have the most success out of college have already made good impressions on alums.

As a professional, I got my first job because of my alumni network. Here’s the kicker though, the guy who hired me didn’t even go to my school - he was just a big fan who had a history of hiring alums from my school. I was put in touch with him through an alum who had previously worked with him. Beyond that, having these unofficial networks allowed me to explore opportunities and collaborations with all kinds of folks.

These conversations often but not always lead to comments like: “I can introduce you to someone,” “My company is looking for someone,” Do you know so and so? They are looking to hire someone.”

A multitude of psychological research studies confirm that people are more attracted to those who share similarities with them. In this case, going to the same school gives people a reason to like each other. This could be the difference between getting the job you are after and not getting the job you are after. This is also tied into identity research but I won’t belabor that point. In short, people generally have pride in their schools and a sense of loyalty to them. Even if you don’t identify with your school you can still leverage the alumni network.

As much as I would like to say that I got where I am because of my ability, my alumni network helped me so much on my path. It would be arrogant and untrue to claim otherwise. Whether you are looking at colleges, in college, or a recent graduate, do yourself a favor and look into it. There are all kinds of ways that colleges are measured. The strength of the alumni network should be valued highly. You can be the best student at your school but you still need someone to offer you a job. To borrow an old adage, it’s not what you know but who you know. Make sure you know the alumni network.

Good university focused on teaching methods or inovations?

Hi, I want to use my Erasmus not just to improve my language skills and to meet new people. I'm also looking for some interesting university, which is focused on some of these topics:

  • Teaching methods - cooperative, projects, hands-on, innovative
  • Gamification in education
  • Skills for the 21st century
  • Work with secondary school or high school students

Any recommendations?
Thank you

Learning Political / Social Science Data Analysis by oneself?

Hi there,

Apologies if this is in the wrong place but I'm looking for some reading, courses or something to brush up on my data analysis. I have an MA in international relations but having worked for around 6 months now I've realised that - at least in my field - data analysis is highly sought after. I utilised some data analysis within my dissertation but I'd ideally like to become more competent, just not sure where to start. If someone can redirect me to some resources or a more relevant subreddit it'd be greatly appreciated.

Thanks ☺️

Victory to the Columbia Grad Workers Strike!

Solidarity from CUNY – All Out to Win

Victory to the Columbia Grad Workers Strike!

Leaflet of CUNY Internationalist Clubs and Revolutionary Internationalist Youth

On March 15, the Graduate Workers of Columbia University launched a strike against the haughty barons lording it over this fiefdom of academic privilege in New York City. The strikers, members of UAW Local 2110, denounce the poverty wages they receive while Columbia sits on an endowment of over $11 billion. To defeat the anti-union administration and its ruling-class godfathers is a question of power. On strike means shut it down. All classes should be stopped, now, and students brought out en masse to the pickets and rallies. Moreover, for university strikes to win, all sectors of the campus workforce need to unite in genuine solidarity – one out, all out. At the City University of New York, solidarity with the GWC is connected with the fight against adjunct poverty, the two-tier labor academic system and conditions making it harder than ever for students to get an education. How do you teach about bad faith in politics?

I'm curious about the lessons I never got in social studies, and it was a question I brought years later to my teacher when I worked in the community on a project with him. I wanted to know why civics lessons didn't get into questions like why issues and solutions get recycled each election cycle.. was it because they were never solved? Or did the things break again?

Or why do "campaign promises" have a connotation for being hollow? That as soon as parties get into power they don't follow through on their promises?

The response I got was anything like that would be seen as too partisan and controversial, and so we teach about politics the way it's supposed to work, and not the way it doesn't work.

But one of the ways it doesn't work is when all parties or politicians behave the same self-interested way when they are in power. That middle bit of the Venn diagram feels pretty crucial. It doesn't partisan, it feels human.

What do others think about that? Does it make sense we focus on teaching civics as a mandatory high school course only as a normative, and if people want to know more they take elective college courses?

I feel like we're missing something.

University grading

Hi, I can't seem to find an answer to my question, so I hope someone here can clear things up.

So, my course is broken down into modules. I get a grade for each module out of 100, I know that for first class honours I need 70+.

However, how does it work? Do I get an average of all my scores for every module that determines my final grade? Or does it work in a different way, because I got 69 (nice) in one of my modules.

College Credits over summer

So I am finishing up my senior year and will be starting my undergrad this Fall! I was wondering if anyone knew any really good (virtual) Early College programs to where I could earn a lot of credits over the summer so I can finish my Bachelors early (to save on tuition). I am not sure whats the cheapest option, however, I live in NC so if there are any programs here that don't cost a lot that would be great too!

Is it easy to get jobs after doing a bcom from such colleges? Are any of these colleges “Bad”?

Homeschool for GED or HSD?

I’m currently in high school, but I’m considering switching to homeschool and getting my GED. I have good reasons to do this: getting a job to save money, paying my own bills, getting my license. If I stay in school, I would have one year left but I failed five classes that I have to make up and I’m worried I won’t be able to finish before my class graduates. I also have depression and anxiety that causes me to miss days in a row. The only thing keeping me from getting my GED to start my life earlier is how I will miss out on certain things: prom, senior year, my friends and possibly the graduation ceremony (I most likely would be able to walk with my class). I know I might regret getting my GED but I want to be prepared for my life better. I grew up poorer so saving money wasn’t an option and now I do have the option. This will help my future a lot but I’m worried I’d miss not having a senior year. Opinions?

I think we should educate those in education systems about the dangers of human trafficking/child trafficking. (16M)

After finding out that Human Trafficking is a 150 BILLION dollar business and countless people get trafficked constantly almost daily, I am very surprised why I don't hear many people talking about or being informed on the matter. I typed human trafficking in Google, and so many people were arrested this month, last month, the month before that, the month before that month, ETC. Because of quarantine a lot of high schoolers, middle schoolers, etc. go on apps like Discord and socialize in spaces where the age ranges from 30yrs to 12-year-olds (all going to school) and I have seen stuff happen, behavioral patterns, sus behavior that I have reported with nothing being done.

Parents should definitely teach their children these values, but often than not, we are not taught these things so where do we go until some of us go too far? I have seen a lot of teenagers on Discord KNOWING they are communicating with someone over 18 but are too blinded by lust and they are getting lured , etc.

I am surprised that we are not being taught to have valuable qualities like self-control/emotional intelligence, moral-intelligence/having goals and something to look forward too, being aware of how the world works and how to avoid things like trafficking, where money comes from, etc. and how money can influence things like trafficking and educate us on what kind of world we live in.

I am just scared because just 10 MINUTES AGO I reported a random guy in his 20s in my Snapchat messages who wanted to see "How I looked like and that he only wanted to talk to anyone 16 and over". I wonder how my peers who aren't as emotionally educated, who aren't as self-aware, who aren't educated enough on the subject matter would have responded or been lured by him.

Considering dramatic career change to teaching. Credential path?

Hello everyone,

I graduated 2.5 years ago with a mechanical engineering degree. Lately I’ve been realizing that teaching sounds like a fun/fulfilling career path but it’s just a thought right now. I currently coach at a high school and the idea of teaching then walking right over to coach while having the same kids in my class sounds like an amazing career. I love teaching people and am very passionate about it .

How would I go about getting a credential here in California relatively quickly and what advice do you have?

Just got a definite offer from college. Will be studying again. I can't even explain how happy I am and Reddit helped me a lot.

A bit of my background story here https://www.reddit.com/r/education/comments/ljvbme/i_am_almost_35yo_i_dont_have_a_satisfying_career/

I received a lot of useful suggestions (even privately) and thanks to them I realised that applying for the college would have been a good thing, even if I'm 35. I received my offer two days ago, will be studying Computing Science. Wanna get a diploma first then move to the third year of uni.

Last year a few redditors told me that taking some CompTIA certifications would have given me the opportunity to start my career in IT. They did not help me to land a job in IT (yet) but they made my college application much, much stronger.

I am 35yo and I have suffered so much for my lack of higher education, last year I was feeling lost and without a career and life plan. Now, for the first time in my life, I feel I have a proper, clear plan to work on. Lockdown in UK has been so hard but I am glad I managed to do something good for myself.

I am sure that this doesn't sound like a big deal for many of you but... it means the world to me. :)

Upset with new school career situation.

Really upset with what was suppose to be a great job prospect

In short I was really tired of the day care center environment, so many things on that list but it ranged from abuse of both Children and teachers, disrespect of teachers, improper classroom ratio and a hyper focus on an accreditation process that does not determine the ability’s of a teacher. During pandemic I was temporarily laid off for about 7 months. I received a call asking if I could come back part time and even though I loved my children I decided it was time for me to make a change....turns out I should have just stayed at my old school.

I got offered and hired for a job at a Montessori school under a director who has just left due to her inability to direct and rudeness to staff and parents, as a teacher in an after school program turned all day due to Covid in which I would help and assist this children in their public schools classes and than plan after care activities, I was super excited to be introduced to Montessori method and a different age group being 6-12 years olds. Well turns out my current school made a mistake in hiring and hired me and another teacher for the same role. They residentially ended up giving the role to the other teacher as she had been hired a day or two before me. I told them I was upset about this and wanted to be on that classroom. They told me they needed me in the pre-k classroom at the moment so I asked for a compromise, I would be in the pre-K classroom from morning time and in the other classroom in afternoons. The director agreed.

So this is how it went for about one month. the new teacher, who was completely new to teaching needed help in the classroom so my old director decided to put us both together. But I still left during parts of the day and honestly had a lot of learning and catch up to do myself. However enrollment dropped when they didn’t properly inform the new teacher of several student who they had previously has behavioral issues with.

Now essentially this new teacher got on a bit of a high horse and believed she had control of the classroom and was the lead teacher (I don’t blame her, in fact we’re good friends) there are a lot of petty things she has done however like take my advice and claim it as her own. when I bought things for the kids and classroom, claiming she bought it and or not telling the kids and teachers it was me. I always inform the kids if they ask that we simply both contributed (we have smart kids no point in hiding it) school doesn’t give us money anyways. Constantly asking for my advice (even now) and passing it off as her own knowledge, and lastly not taking my lessons seriously and Or even incorporating them since...”I’m never in the class”. Meanwhile she pulls things from scholastics and other teachers instead of truly learning how to lesson plan.

one time she asked for advice on what to do in class, ignored what I told her and asked the director who came in and gave her the same advice...in front of me. :|. I’m not petty and only care because I know I put in work and am not getting recognized, lately she’s had a superior issue and I’ve been trying to politely knock her down by explaining we both accepted a position that’s not what we were told it would be..I have also been called lead teacher without pay in my previous school and I told her this would happen before she pushed so hard for the position. I told her they would only give her a name to keep it politically correct for parents and would not giver her pay, and now she is upset I’m not in the classroom anymore with her.

I’m upset because the new director although great had defined my role a bit more as they have now made me a “support teacher” I.e I’m no longer needed but they don’t want to lay me off...probably because they don’t want to pay my unemployment. They are telling me to go into classrooms so I can get the Montessori exposure but essentially just make me take care of the kids who don’t listen. Which is frustrating in itself. I’m also doing a lot of busy work and disturbing classrooms when I go in, since the kids do enjoy my presence but unfortunately associate me as a sub as opposed to a teacher. They won’t let me get my accreditation until a year when they previously had promised me two weeks under the old director than retracted that statement. The new director said she wouldn’t let me start my classes either. I simply started studying on my own but I don’t want to be at this school anymore. The current director knows this, and is trying to say I have a role when I really don’t...half the time they don’t even need me in the classes I’m literally a third teacher just to stand there or control the children who don’t listen. The only time they really need me is at 12 for a teacher break and at 4 for the kindergarten class as main teachers leave.

That kindergarten class is so disrespectful and honestly are very immature. Their main teachers complain and have meeting with the parents all the time and now the responsibility has fallen on me as well. In fact now the main teacher is trying to put a lot of their behaviors on me and this simply isn’t true. Often times I’m left alone with 15 kindergartens who don’t know how to act around adults in general and often fight each other or run around class. I Had started drawing things for them and let them color it in as it grabbed their attention but I was told to stop by my new director as it isn’t Montessori. (I’m working on the process of developing their emotional and social skills) but I didn’t sign up or interview for this. I’m bored and restless most of the day until I am highly stressed at the end of the day...their main teachers won’t even stay an hour or two because they said they would quit...yet I’m expected to handle these kids for an hour on my own. To work on my “class room management skills” the director apologized to me and stated sorry this is your introduction to Montessori as this school isn’t Montessori. I moved to this state because of this job and the high hopes I had for Montessori, I took on more bills than I should have in hopes that this would give me accreditation and better pay as well.

Are basic design skills important for students?

Submission statement: Meyer and Norman (2020) note that; “Designers are entrusted with increasingly complex and impactful challenges. However, the current system of… education does not always prepare students for these challenges.” In a world in which critical thinking, entrepreneurialism and visual communication are increasingly valued, basic design skills have become a necessity for our students.

The unfortunate reality is that these skills are rarely taught explicitly in our schools. Students do learn how illustrators, artists and advertisers construct and convey meaning through visual literacy (often through detailed studies of picture books, artworks and advertisements) but I often find that this ability to critique the work of others is rarely carried forward when students communicate their thinking through their own creations.

Ask a student to create a presentation, an advertisement, a website or a video and the result will often be a hodgepodge of brash colours, garish fonts and inconsistent design choices. This is partly because students are not professional (graphic, UX, web) designers but also because they have not explicitly been taught the skills to avoid these design follies.

Your students might not all grow up to be professional designers but I guarantee that one day they will need to produce a slide deck to impress a client or a boss, or create a walkthrough video to develop the skills of new employees or make a website to promote that new side hustle. First impressions do make a difference and I believe that students should be equipped with a sound understanding of design skills in order to solve problems and communicate their thinking.

We explore five important design skills in our latest video ‘Create a mountain landscape using Google Drawings’ including using gradients, creating custom shapes, duplicating, grouping and layering. We’ve used Google Drawings in this video because it is free (with a Google account) and a relatively simple program for younger students to grasp. That being said, the design skills explored in this video would easily apply to other design software such as Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW and Gravit Designer.

How do explore design skills in your classroom? How important do you think they are?

Overwhelmed

So it’s time for me to register for my fall classes. I’ve been kind of saving it till the last because I know it was gonna be big but I didn’t realize how big. I have to start my student assistant teaching, I need 220 credit hours. I don’t know how to make this work, I am a single income earner in my household. I could really only commit one day a week to doing this because I need to make an income. A question I have is how do we get matched with a school or teacher? Especially if we live in a different state than the college we go to. How does this work with Covid, since many schools are not allowing parents or other adults into the classroom? I am so overwhelmed and I’m sure things will be clearer once I’m not but I’m super stressed right now.

What would be the best replacement for the ATAR?

This question is inspired by this news article: As education boss, Mark Scott criticised ATAR. Now he is urged to act on it

According to the article, there are alternatives available, such as judging students by their work in relevant subjects, or using non-ATAR entry options.

Does the ATAR really need to be replaced? And if so, what would be the best replacement in terms of maximising the skills and qualifications of students?

Why religion is ruining the American Educational System.

I know that this post will be very upsetting to a lot of people, just proceed with caution.

I just really think that a lot of children the are raised overly religious may not listen to things like evolution and The Big Bang. In school I know kids who are super religious and do not pay much attention to science and history. they refuse to even consider the big bang theory and evolution ( Even If The basic theory of evolution has been confirmed so completely that most modern biologists consider evolution simply a fact). And not even considering that the origin of the universe did not happen the way there mythology says that it does. And even if the world was created 4.54 billion years ago in real life, the bible says that it was created 7,500 years ago. In religion science is not true. I do 1000% think that all religions are BS.

And also the religious kids that I know also get upset about the fact that the Greeks once believed in different things because what they believe in is bull crap like Adam and Eve, Noah's arc, and Satan.

In conclusion, parents should not teach their children about religion and if they do they need to make sure that they consider that evolution is real, the big bang could have happened, and that other people in other parts of history did not have the same beliefs as they do.

Why technological advancements mean games are the most optimal method of learning.

Hello everyone!

I am currently writing my dissertation for University and my chosen area of study is regarding games and why they are potentially the best way to teach students about a great deal of topics, for example; the living conditions in the Second World War. The player/student will have a more immersive and personal understanding of the severity in comparison to the likes of a textbook.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

Do you have any advice on what I should include in the study?

What would games change about the way we teach students, pros and cons?

Any replies would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks, Matt.

platform for students and teachers to share their lessons and notes-Social learning

Hey everyone, I have this free platform I've been working on where you can upload your notes, either by taking pictures of your hand written notes or typing them out yourself. On each of these posts, there is a comment section so your friends or other students can ask questions, get answers, or just talk about the lesson.

I think this would be a great resource if you want to make learning a bit more engaging with just your notes and works best if you got all your classmates in it. It would also make a great source for review with finals coming up.

I posted this here because I thought such a platform may be useful to those who are interested in more social ways of learning, which is my main purpose of making it.

Looking for CTO for Gura - Livestreaming platform built for learning experiences.

Hello Everyone!

My new startup (set to launch on April 1) is looking for a full-time CTO to come onboard (equity only).

Gura is a live-streaming platform built for virtual learning experiences.

We are democratizing the expert and creating an all-in-one platform for creators, influencers, etc to knowledge share and deepen the relationships with their audience.

We have 30+ early adopters on-board with a cumulative audience size of 500k+. We also just closed on our first angel investor, who is a Disney executive, and have several others currently in conversation.

Our product is currently being built by an outsourced engineering team. We're coming up on our Beta in the next 2 weeks.

We need a true technical Co-Founding Partner to take over our engineering, preferably with full-stack skills on both the backend & frontend. The product is being built as a React Web app.

Contact us if interested at [owen@gura.io](mailto:owen@gura.io) or DM me through Facebook. Thanks!

PS. Here is our AngelList job listing: https://angel.co/company/gura/jobs/1118139-co-founder-cto
