Generalists vs. Specialists (Elementary/Middle School Issue)

What is the general consensus (thinking in terms of research) on having generalists (one teacher to one class, teaches many subjects) versus having specialists (one subject, many classes) in elementary and middle school classes?

I've noticed that elementary and middle school teachers are pretty overworked compared to their high school counterparts. I am speaking as a high school teacher with friends in the elementary school system.

I am wondering if having specialists rather than generalists would improve learning outcomes for students and make teacher workload easier.
