I recently got a job at a public elementary school in a kinda conservative area of a kinda liberal state. My partner and I just got engaged and I've already gotten questions about the ring from my coworkers, not to mention that I may opt to change my last name (ie, what the kids call me, so it won't be subtle) after the wedding. So far I've just avoided using pronouns when I talk about my partner, but that leads to a very awkward way of speaking after more than a sentence or two. Is it worth just being honest with my coworkers, or should I just pretend my partner is the "opposite" gender from me? The district and school have said things about being inclusive in official statements, but who knows what goes out the window once a parent catches wind and makes a stink...
