I'm currently teaching at a public high school, been here 5 years. It's a pretty bad environment with some serious underlying structural problems which have been exposed by COVID and all its accompanying stresses. I want to move to a better-managed district, but would like to keep it quiet that I'm looking for an out.
Every job listing I can find asks for three letters of recommendation. I guess what I'm wondering is, how can I acquire these letters without getting the word out that I'm looking to leave?
I have trusted colleagues (fellow teachers) that I could ask for a letter, but I don't know if districts are interested in letters from anyone other than admin... am I wrong about this? I also am on good terms with a former assistant principal, but every posting is asking for "current" letters and he hasn't worked with me in 2 years. Does that make the "current" window?
Should I just bite the bullet and ask my current admin for letters? I hesitate on this because I've heard stories about how petty our admin can get when teachers get on their bad side, and I have every reason to believe it's true, especially with how bad things have gotten this past year. I'm worried that asking for a letter could create a serious rift between me and admin.
Any advice on this would be very deeply appreciated.
EDIT: In case this seems out of place here, I understand that it's better suited to r/teachers, but they've gone dark in protest of Reddit policies and I don't know when they'll be back up. I hope this is well-received here in the meantime.
