How do schools around the world handle extracurricular activities? Do teachers handle everything?

Malaysian teacher here. We get taken out of schools during student competition and events. Some teachers who are coaches, can be gone for over a month. Recently, my school hosted a district tournament for sports which lasted for three days. Over 25 teachers were taken out from school (some of these teachers were bringing students to tournaments of other sports). Best to say, not much learning was happening in school.

And we might also host the state level. So you can imagine where I am going here.

I just find it crazy. These competitions and programs are important for students but I just hate having my focus being diverted so much out of classroom.

How is it done elsewhere?
