What is it about retaking a class that makes it so much easier? What lessons can we take from this when designing classes?

Whenever I've had to retake a college course, after withdrawing or failing it, the second time around is so much easier to understand. I think it has to do with the better understanding of class expectations, knowing why each concept will be important and how it will be used. Have you experienced this before? I wonder how we can use this insight to improve education.
