Funding Question

What negatives are there to funding public education? I mean funding it to ridiculous levels. Teachers not having to work two jobs and still owning their high end suv outright, every student getting the latest computer if needed for free? Breakfast and lunch. Pull out all the stops. Something like a small federal law enforcement an

Assume money is not an issue and never will be.

What negative impact does this have? On anything? Society, the economy, industry, literally anything.

Any first-year french psychology books you recommend?

I'm starting in september my psychology degree in Paris, but as it has been in the past I gotta study beforehand, so, if you could include some tips for reading the books, it'll be amazing.
The books I'm looking for, are any related to "Introduction to psychology":
- Childhood past and present
- First approaches to the social bond
- Introduction to experimental and cognitive psychology
- Brain and psychology
- Bioethics

I don't know what to study in University, and I am 'pressured' to pick one to study.

Hello everyone! So currently I am finished with high school and my next step now is to decide what to study. Before I have clear cut goals and pathways of what to study, which industry/career to work in. I planned to study Comp Sci and work in cyber security for a decade or so. Mostly because I am interested in the field and it has quite high pay. However, overtime I discovered more about myself and found out new pathways which is good but the more opportunities I have for myself, the harder it is to decide which one to pick.

Now, I am unsure whether I should pick Political Science and Economics, Comp Sci, or Mechanical Engineering. I was also thinking whether I should study a double major or a single major. I cannot delay or have a gap year, because of the pressure from my parents for me to study but university in Australia is subsidized so it is fairly inexpensive for me to study Uni (compared to international students). Sorry if its too much, I am panicking lately and feeling like my future seems quite fragile.

How can he go back to school? [UK -> USA]

I [F USA] know someone [25M UK] who overcame many difficulties in recent years. He began studying law in the UK in fall 2017 but dropped out during the pandemic (2.5/3 years). He has always excelled in math and physics so he wants to get a physics degree in the USA, but I'm not sure how to check which schools or scholarships he may be eligible for. He wants to leave the UK as soon as possible, but he's been advised to complete the courses he has left for his law degree first. He doesn't want to because he is no longer interested in the field. It is also worth mentioning he was born in the USA so he has dual citizenship. What is the best course of action moving forward?

Does anyone know if you can use the credits from an already completed bachelor's degree towards a second one?

For example, my New Zealand Bachelor of Arts consisted of five core papers, nine major papers and 11 electives.

If I decide to do a second degree and I've already completed some of the required papers from the first degree, do I have to take them again?

Let’s say I have no beard in my photo for an exam and on the day of the exam I have a beard. Has there been any situations before where someone could not take an exam because of this? Has there been any situations where it’s the other way around and in the photo the person had a beard but shaved it before the exam? Would the people at the exam understand that people can look different with or without facial hair. I need to know.

Long story short, I want to set a schedule where I set aside time to learn about multiple subjects but am curious as to what would be the most effective way.

Lets say I have three subjects I want to learn and three open days to do so. Would it be better to dedicate one day per subject or to learn all three subjects each day but for shorter windows of time?

CRISPR kits for kids? What are they like?

Now, I'm not asking about ethics. I'm familiar with the ethics questions around CRISPR in general. I also don't need to be told to coordinate with my sister. These things would seem obvious but you'd be surprised how many people want to jump on you, presumptuously....Anyways.I'm asking for anyone who's done a CRISPR experiment with their kids and how that experience went?Or, for any actual chemists/biologists out there who are familiar with the CAS9 gene editing process, if there are any potential dangers in the advertised glow-in-the-dark jellyfish protein gene splicing experiments?

I also want to know what else I might get her to produce a more immersive experience. I'm thinking a lab coat and microscope (like a decent one, not just a kids toy. We had a kids one when I was a kid and we couldn't view anything close to what we should have been able to according to the books and this killed the experience completely) along with some sample media, slides, and some lightweight books on microbiology, germs, spores, etc. so that she can study and identify things with it. Say, the glow in the dark yeast cultures as they grow and relate this microbiology to her veritable farm of animals she currently cares for including multiple reptiles and chickens I was hoping someone might make recommendations for a more fully featured microscope with significant enough resolution and such that it might carry her through intermediate biology or biochem if she goes that far and where I might get one and for how much?

I have a brilliant niece with multiple reptile pets and chickens as well. Biology is her thing and she's well beyond her age in this area intellectually and I want to give her an experience in doing real, technical science as I know this is something she enjoys and which she is well above any classes, even most of the gifted and talented ones for her age group. Also, I believe hands-on learning is key to retaining knowledge and building practical ability and this seems like a very exciting experiment that produces a very real result to leave a positive impact. CRISPR is here and it's not well enough understood for people to make informed decisions about it oftentimes, but it is something she will have to face in the world increasingly as she grows up and I feel like this is a great opportunity for her to study the topic.

Advice? Share your experiences doing CRISPR experiments?

Pros/cons from people who have done it?

The need for a paradigm shift

For the last fifty years, education in the USA has been pouring money into the project of trying find and implement the “most effective” ways to mold students into a particular desirable “product” as defined by the state. The needed paradigm shift is to start prioritizing the need for students to have access to different models of education, aimed at different goals, that are better suited to who they are.

In a nutshell, our current model spends immense sums trying to invent a way to turn all kinds of substances into gold, instead trying to see what kind of value each substance has and what kind of formation it is best suited to.

Gov. As a result, the small liberal arts school has seen mass faculty departures with more than one-third of personnel leaving within a single-year.

Would I be able to admit into a college in Texas?

My family is moving to America soon. I'm an American diploma student with 4.0 in school and 1470 sat 1 and 1460 sat 2. I finished my first year of college but due to me moving from ksa to Egypt and how hard that transition was I got a pretty bad gpa in the first year in engineering (2.5 GPA)

Now as I stated my family ispving to san Antonio Texas and I was tasked to look into college admissions there and see if I can find a good college that I would be able to admit to.

I have no problem with redoing my first year but I met the problem of me having a bad gpa in college and not sure if my sat scores would still work after this much time has passed (not sure if it had an experation date or not tbh) would I be able to admit into a good engineering or computer science college there? Or do I not waste my time and try to get a good gpa from the next 4 years here?

Saving my brother.

My younger brother (17) has a very bad screentime/video game addiction (adhd amplfies this). He can never seem to motivate himself to study, exercise, eat healthy, etc. and it has gotten to the point where's hes failing his classes in his senior year, is obese, and does literally nothing about it. I care about him a lot and i've tried everything but i decided to take the science + gaming approach lol. I created an AI accountability pet for him that he kind of takes care of.

He found the buggy alpha version really helpful, currently this is how it works:

Everyday you log your good habits (completing homework, working out) and bad habits (such as video games), failing habits hurts your Doxo, and completing them gives him EXP! Level him up, and unlock different perks.

You check in with your Doxo where he will give you feedback, inspiration and science-backed advice in order to help you stick with your habits and helps monitor + lower your screentime user.

You can send your Doxo on adventures to collect coins, and use them to buy badges and emotes.

If you want to use social media (which Doxo blocks), you have to pay Doxo coins for every minute you want to use a blocked app. He found this the most helpful. Lowered his screentime by 83% and is actually consistently on top of his homework, and he gets rewarded for it on doxo and IRL of course.

i don't want to break self promotion rules so i'll not be posting any links here. that said, i'd love to hear your guys opinion about it, and maybe some feature requests.

It's an interesting debate, using gamification to help you fight other addictions. It seems almost counterintuitive, but the way I think about it, Tik Tok and Facebook are billion dollar companies that optimize their product for super long use, not for user growth. At the end of the day, if someone uses an app and the end result is that they feel fulfilled and proud, versus feeling like they wasted their time then I see it as justified.

Not using gamification to me is like going to a kid in a candy store and trying to tempt him with some broccoli.

Anybody Know Why The College of William & Mary Has Been Unable to Properly Support to Richard Bland College Unlike UVA with UVA Wise?

These are two flagship institutions which have these smaller colleges under their umbrellas. On one hand, there’s UVA which has an amazing relationship with UVA Wise, while on the other hand, RBC has not received much aid throughout the years from W&M. This is despite the fact that UVA Wise is like 5 hours away from the main campus and RBC just an hour from W&M. Anybody who attends these institutions or specializes in education policy know why? It seems that W&M never was able to effectively create a system that allowed both colleges to thrive together, very reminiscent of the failed Colleges of William & Mary system. Maybe students in both schools can lobby for better support if the independence isn’t granted.

Submitted a grade change form I thought was acceptable, but now I’m not sure…

I was informed by one of my students recently of a grade discrepancy between their HS and college transcript (dual-credit class), where their grade in one of the transcripts was half a letter grade higher than the other. Assuming that it was a clerical error on my part, I kept the higher half letter grade and submitted a grade change form for the other transcript.

Well, here’s the awkward part…I discovered later that apparently the grade that was half a letter grade lower was the original grade and the higher grade was a manual change in the original grade (as for the reason, I’m still trying to figure out).

I’m concerned and a bit frightened as to what to do because I just submitted the grade change form (this is in paper btw) and am not sure if I’d be in deep trouble if I were to let this go (this is an B- to an B grade change). In addition, this student was a hard working individual in my class, though even then, the B obv wasn’t the original grade.

To clarify stuff, B- and B provides different GPA points, so they’re not technically the same grade in the grading system for both HS and college.

I know I probably fucked up and should have asked the student what the original score was instead of assuming that it was my clerical error. In addition, this is the only change I’ve seen, nothing else. Fellow teachers, what do I do…

EDIT: adding in more info, I am in a union (assuming that I might need to contact them to escalate this if needed)

Which material would allow for a more realistic/useful structural engineering learning experience? Spaghetti bridge or balsa wood bridge?

Hi everyone, hoping for some people with engineering backgrounds to help me out here!

I'm starting a new Engineering Design course for high schoolers this year - it will give students a taste of each major engineering discipline. Although the course will be largely project-based, I do want them to learn key engineering concepts, practices, terminology, etc. I have a background in physics not engineering, so I am definitely seeking out thoughts and suggestions from actual engineers. Since my first unit covers structural engineering and load analysis, I'd like the kids to do the class bridge challenge - design and build a bridge that can withstand a certain amount of weight (I'm thinking of simulating this by driving weighted cars over it). Here's my question: Recognizing that neither spaghetti nor balsa wood recreate a realistic scenario, which material would allow for a better application/discussion/analysis of the concepts that we cover?
Thanks in advance!

Help me to attend university...

Hello everyone.

I am writing this post as a last resort. This is my last hope.

I got an acceptance letter from Bayes Business School for the MSc program in Marketing Strategy and Innovation. This has been a lifelong dream of mine and coming from a lower middle class family and being a first generation learner, this is my only opportunity to get out of poverty.

I have worked exceptionally hard, the last few years, to create a powerful resume. I have done courses, completed internships. I was so sure that this time, I would not be let down.

I applied for the Boyle Rodney Scholarship, which is a fully funded scholarship and also gives a monthly allowance to cover the living costs. I knew I was a perfect fit for the scholarship and the program, considering the fact that our annual household income is less than 2,800 GBP (2,80,000 INR). I was rejected, for unknown reasons. I have already paid the deposit of 2,000 GBP, borrowing from a family friend. I have scored excellent marks in my IELTS and had prepared almost everything, when I found out about the rejection from the scholarship panel and realised that I cannot go. I cannot even take a loan of the entire tuition fee and living cost because my family's financial condition renders us helpless and ineligible to take out such a huge amount of loan. The maximum amount of loan I can take can cover 1/4th of the tuition fees and living expenses.

Maybe I should have accepted the fact that it is too big of a dream for me, but after having worked so hard and taking every possible measure, it is just unacceptable to me to let my dreams crumble like this.

Please let me know if there is any option for a fee waiver or any charity that I can apply to. Are there any measures that I can take to ensure financial support?

At this point, I am penniless, out of options and by the looks of it, without any hope.

In the last few weeks, I have written countless emails, reaching out to several people of the university and the people of the scholarship panel. No one has been able to help me out.

I don’t have a lot of time because they won’t issue an unconditional letter after the 1st of August.

Any kind of help is appreciated.

Anyone else worried about Florida politics impact online courses in their state?

So many states use online courses created by Florida Virtual School in their own virtual schools (CA, VT, NH, etc). Is anyone else worried about how politics in Florida are going to impact these courses?

Already, their health course only provides sexual health information geared towards heterosexual, cisgender students. It provides no information that could be considered gender affirming.

As concerning as the health curriculum is, I'm even more worried about the social studies courses. Does anyone know if the courses Florida Virtual School (now Flexpoint) creates fall under the "anti woke" restrictions?

So, I'm thinking to what collage or university I should go to / spacificly what I should study. I thought maybe I would ask if anyone knows a way or "path" of which I can study oneirology. Or how to get to ontology and/or metaphysics? Thank you!

Open Book Exam?

Hey everyone,

So I'm currently enrolled in a diploma program that will get me a teaching license eventually. Most (if not all) the students with me are already teachers. They're studying to comply with the ministry of education's updated qualifications - I'm not exactly sure. I have a bachelors that is relevant to what I want to teach after I graduate.

My question is what exactly are open book exams? I've never had one when I was studying for my bachelors. The professor says we can print out all the slides and use them openly in the exam. This makes me nervous. What kind of questions will I likely encounter? Please help.

Additional Qualifications for Economics/Finance based Masters and Work (U.K)

I’m currently studying economics and finance at university and i’m thinking about completing a masters degree. I want to try and take this masters course at a decently high level university so I want to gain some more qualifications outside of just my standard university course.

I have seen a few like the ‘Graduate Record Examinations’ that I’m thinking about taking.

So does anyone know of any other exams/qualifications I could go for like the GRE^ that would look good on my CV.

Choosing the Ideal Bachelor's Program for Finance Career

Hello,

I'm in my final grade in high school. In the future I'd like to work in investment banking, private equity or management consulting. Which one of those bachelor programs is the best for this career, I'm thinking about: economics, management or finance and accounting?

If you're a student, recruiter or working in those industries, I'd love to hear your opinion.

Intro to Finance

So I got this elective in my high school freshman year schedule, and I’m wondering what topics it covers and things to know. Any bits of information or knowledge would help. Is this a class that is worth it, or is it a waste of time? I have the option to switch it for another class so I’d like to know whether this class is worth it.

Post Master's Courses

I'll graduate from my MSc in psychology at the end of the year. Once graduated I'll be three courses short of being eligible for counselling licensure in my jurisdiction - o Group therapy theory and practice o Family therapy theory and practice o Professional Ethics in Counselling

Can anyone recommend an online school that I can take these courses in individually without another degree. Two of the above courses can be undergrad and one needs to be post grad - doesn't matter which. I wasn't interested in a counselling MA, and so decided to go the psych MSc route, however I would like registration with the counselling and psychotherapy bodies in my part of the world as my goals have changed.

Thanks!

Outraged About Florida’s Whitewashing of Slavery, VP Harris Makes Impassioned Speech

Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to Florida Friday to highlight that state’s latest approach to teaching public school students falsehoods about American history.
Speaking about the Florida State Board of Education curriculum updates approved earlier in the week, Harris gave a fiery speech at the Ritz Theatre and Museum in Jacksonville. Harris added the last-minute trip after it was revealed that middle school students in the state would be taught that slavery actually benefited some enslaved people during one of America’s darkest periods.

Grad Student request for help! Special Education Support and Outside Agencies Query

Hi there teachers,

I'm in a master's degree program for K-8 elementary and K-12 special ed, and a midlife career changing adult. I am in Oregon, California, and Washington. Grad school is online.

I have to write a reflection about special education services and outside agencies. I need some help!

These are the questions:

Who oversees the support: the school or an outside agency? What services do they support?
Are the services free, or do families need to pay for these services?
How are community resources shared with families?
Are supports discussed in the beginning of the school year, at conferences, in IEPs, or elsewhere?
Did the mentor teacher create his or her own newsletter/brochure, or utilize the school, district, or community made resources?
Discuss the importance of continuing the support for students and families or caregivers outside of the classroom. What are the benefits and challenges associated with receiving supports outside of the school day?
Discuss if there are limited resources in certain areas, and if so, how has the mentor teacher or school addressed those identified limitations.
If any of the 3.4K people currently online can drop some knowledge, I would be grateful! I am supposed to work with a mentor teacher, but I am traveling, so it's a little difficult.

If this is enjoyable for anyone, it would really help me out! You are the “mentor teacher” in this scenario. I don't require lengthy answers. I have some understanding in the process of advocacy and facilitating local and regional support for students with disabilities outside the public school learning environment, but any comments you might share will enhance my understanding.

If any kind-hearted teachers are open to contributing responses, may I ask for your name and school district for my practicum hours form? In DMs, of course.
I look forward to any replies. Thank you in advance.
This is a shot in the internet dark. I appreciate all you do for the kids!

I’d like a teacher’s/admin’s perspective

I was recently accused of academic misconduct by an admin I have a rather bumpy history with. I’m trying to see things in his perspective as the accusation is essentially that I had unauthorized materials for an online/recorded proctored exam. Context: I had a vape (I was at my apartment, not campus) and a Tupperware of soup (not disallowed in the student handbook), and there was a reflection of my PC’s fans’ lights and a beyond blurry white/blank screen on the Tupperware. In my mind I was just balancing dinner and school after having been to classes and work that day. I made like a C, genuinely didn’t cheat, but he wants me to be suspended and lose all credit for this semester (11 classes) due to his belief that the reflection had notes in it. I reviewed the video and to me it looked extremely normal, minus the food and vape. As an educator/admin, would you comfortably assume a student is cheating because of this?(if this isn’t appropriate to ask, please ignore) I just can’t grasp my head around it all as I was taken off guard at the whole thing. Not here to ask for help on the situation, just trying to see the pov of somebody who might be making these decisions. Thank you in advance, I guess I’m honestly just wanting unbiased opinions on how this could look to a non-student. Apologies if this is against guidelines, please remove if so.

Overseas degree compatibility in USA

My step-son will get his green card approved this year or next.

The plan is for him to complete his degree in mechanical engineering in Colombia and then move to USA.

I have heard two diametrically opposite claims (from people who have recently gotten migrated from LatAm)

1) it does not really matter, if employer accepts it, it is fine

2) Nah, bad idea, he will need to get degree here.

From the background of the responders. I have a feeling that country of degree matters if one needs registration from any national authority for eg electricians, doctors, etc

Please help. If my thinking is correct then as a mechanical engineer he will not have issues with his degree as long as he excels in the interview.

Is Accounting a good career path?

Hi, I'm a Business Administration college student, but I have been hesitant about my major. First, I started with Journalism, which is my passion, but I found out that the career path is not worth it. Then, I decided to change to Business Administration, which is better, but still, is not where I want to be. I'm trying to build a good future for myself and my future family. I have done some research, and think that Accounting could be the major for me. Thanks god, despite me changing majors, and potentially changing again (to Accounting) the classes that I have taken match with all of them. My question is, if I'm correct, about thinking that Accounting is a good career? Are the more advanced classes difficult? How is the pay? etc...

Problems with City schools?

Like many areas, where I live the test scores are low in the diverse city schools and high in the mostly white and affluent suburban areas. I am debating where to send kids. Local city moms swear the city schools are good despite test scores but anonymous online reviews mention fights, bullying and other behavioral problems more than the reviews of the suburban schools. Like I said, lots of defenders of the city schools. Anyone have experience with city schools and either regretted sending their kids there or moved away from them? How have you personally utilized AI tools like ChatGPT?

Hi all - I'm trying to gather qualitative data about the ways in which faculty and graduate students utilize AI tools like ChatGPT, both inside and outside of the classroom. I've written a (completely anonymous) survey which can be found here, and am happy to collect any thoughts, observations, or opinions you'd rather share in the comments as well. I plan to do a write-up of the data within the next month or so, and can share that raw data with anyone who would like access to it. If you have the time to give even a partial response, it'd be much appreciated!

I Need To Beat The Odds. I Don't Know How Though

I'm doing online school for Pre-Calculus because I didn't do so great the first time around.

I was doing great online until the dreaded first unit test hit me like a ton of bricks. My score plummeted from a promising 97 to a disheartening 77. Now, I know that's not terrible, but in today's competitive world, a minimum of 90% is practically necessary to secure a spot in university.

I've crunched the numbers, and I believe it's still possible to turn things around. If I manage to score 100 on the 3 upcoming unit tests, get 95 on the next three assignments, and ace the quizzes with only one mistake at most, I can climb my way back into the 90's. It's no small feat, and it will undoubtedly require an insane amount of discipline.

To make matters even more challenging, I've struggled with focus in the past. I've tried dopamine detoxing, but I've faced numerous relapses - perhaps more than a hundred times. However, I'm not going to let that deter me. These next 25 days are going to be a test of my determination and hard work.

So, I turn to you for support and advice. If any of you have faced a similar uphill battle in Pre-Calculus or any other subject, I'd love to hear your success stories and the strategies you employed to triumph over adversity.

Also I'm not looking for "Plan Bs" or giving up on this one. This is my Plan B after already faltering Pre-calculus once, and I'm going to give it my all to make it work

high school education with stem focus

hi all! I’m new to this subreddit, but I’m here on behalf of my parents. I have a 12 year old brother who is extremely intelligent and has a gift for math, he wants to be an engineer. unfortunately, he regularly gets into trouble at school because he’s bored and the work isn’t challenging. high school is around the corner for him, and my parents are desperate to find a high school with a STEM focus that will challenge him and prepare him for the career he wants. they live in the Inland Empire of Southern California, but are okay with online programs. I can’t find anything, any recommendations?

Need help/suggestions. seriously contemplating applying as an agent for international universities

I have recently helped 2 students with their admission process in UK Universities, I live in Afghanistan and I really need a source of income.

While applying I noticed an option of "applying through Agents" i heard universities pay good commission. I'm in dire need of an income source.

TBH I can't even afford an office/staff right now, however I can offer my services with utmost honesty. There are no agents to assist students in admissions (none I know of).

Is this a good idea, if so what strategy should I use? Can I be an agent for more than one university?

I need all the assistance, help from the experts, professors especially, students.

I hope this post gets approval and attention.

Materialism – leading to a higher level of greed in today’s generation

I recently attended a birthday party of an affluent family’s 8-year-old. I found right from the shoes to the hair band or bow. Everything was branded. To my surprise, I found the majority of the kids sporting branded items. On discussion with my kid, I was given to understand that it is the normal thing whether attending an event or going to a picnic. On asking the reason for the need for everything to be branded, I was told peer acceptance, to be seen as happy, successful, to be popular, to be seen as in touch with the ‘in’ things. Most of today’s generation believe belief that possessions, that too branded, are the most important things in life. The social image that it projects is very important for them. In many families, Parents view children as more expert with regard to products, and they actually wield more purchase influence. So now, even the ads are designed targeting that factor. Funnily, gender does not influence materialism. I found that both are equal in their materialism.
Maybe materialism is important to achieve goals such as success, having a social image, having a luxurious/comfortable life, etc. It can affect a relationship, increase chances of depression and anxiety, make a person less satisfied with themselves, because always there will be a new bag or new car out there to buy. This is increasing greed to a very high level, leading to unkind cruel behaviour also, even in children. Judging others on the basis of what they have. Recently, I came across a quote from a spiritual guru – Sadh-guru “A materialistic person is ruthless with others but kind to himself. A spiritual person is ruthless with himself but kind to everyone else.” Shouldn’t we bring back the link between spiritualism, contentment, and materialism to our schools or education? Maybe we will have a more balanced, kind humans who give more importance to life than possessions.

Young children Literacy App

My friends and I were trying to help young readers polish their reading skills after school hours. It is difficult for teachers to understand every child’s specific difficulty in their reading skills. We therefore decided to create an app which allows a child to choose a topic e.g dog, ball , etc and the app will create a story based upon the interest of the child. The child records the story page by page and transcribes it. The app will then compare the child’s reading to the actual story and locate his mistakes.

The function of transcribe currently only works on a computer. Please let me know your thoughts.

Is spirituality and science connected?

2 years back, I had watched a video ‘Pale Blue Dot’ by Carl Sagan. It was about an image captured by camera on Voyager 1. It made a huge impression on me. The enormity of the universe was contrasted with the miniscule nature of our planet Earth. The profound message given there shifted my perspective on life. “There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world.” This sums up so much in one sentence.

Whenever there is too much of ‘me, my space, my opinion,' going on in my class, I make it a point to show this video and everytime it hits the mark and the behaviour or attitude in the class changes. Many students have come back to me saying that everytime life becomes very serious or they get anxious, they watch this video.

Recently I came across a video from the spiritual guru, Sadhguru, stating the same message - That in this big universe, Earth is a micro-speck, in that our respective country is a super micro-speck and in that super micro-speck if one considers oneself a very Big Man, then it is an immense problem. That set me thinking about the connection between spirituality and science. I feel both are about finding or understanding the fundamental nature of the universe and our place in it or about our basic nature. The difference being - science takes the path of experimentation, empirical observations, or ‘looking outside’ whereas spirituality is about introspection, intuition, or ‘looking within’.

Schools out. Should you worry about the summer slide?

Teachers and parents worry about the ‘summer slide.’ But there’s mixed evidence on whether or not learning loss over the summer even happens.
Whether or not kids lose learning during the summer, they very rarely gain it—but the hot days out of school can be a golden window for kids who are struggling to catch up, especially in the context of pandemic learning loss. This Scientific American article reviews the research behind the summer slide and how to combat learning loss.

DeSantis’s—and the MAGA movement’s—vision for America is a place where our stories, our identities, and our communities are banned. That’s why we’re launching the MoveOn Banned Bookmobile tour that will distribute some of the most frequently banned books in some of the communities most impacted by the bans.

Does a good story need conflict?

When fiction writing is taught in school, it is often said that a good story needs conflict. I got curious, and asked ChatGPT Plus (GPT-4) to write an entertaining and comical short story that doesn't involve any conflict. Below is what it came up with. So, does a good story need conflict? You be the judge.

Title: "The Great Pickle Mishap"

In the lively town of Quirkville, known for its eccentric inhabitants and even quirkier events, lived Mildred, an elderly woman with a zest for life and an insatiable love for pickles. Mildred was the proud owner of a pickle shop, "Mildred's Crispy Crunch," where she sold an assortment of pickles in all shapes, sizes, and flavors.

One day, she decided to host the town's first "Pickle Appreciation Day." Every resident was ecstatic and prepared for the big day, knowing Mildred's quirky events were never to be missed. The day arrived with much anticipation, and everyone gathered at the local park where Mildred had set up a pickle-themed extravaganza.

There was everything pickle-related you could imagine - pickle-shaped balloons, pickle-patterned clothing, pickle-flavored ice cream, and even a pickle piñata. The most anticipated event was the unveiling of Mildred's secret project - the world's largest pickle. She had spent months working on this colossal cucumber, nurturing it, pickling it, and speaking to it, because Mildred believed that pickles grew best when you had deep conversations about life and philosophy with them.

The crowd gasped in awe as Mildred pulled the curtain from the giant pickle. It was a sight to behold, a cucumber the size of a small car, sitting proudly in a giant vat of pickle juice. The town’s photographer, a man with a sense of humor as keen as his love for photography, decided to capture the moment from an unusual angle. Climbing up on the vat to get a bird's eye view, he slipped on a stray pickle and landed butt-first onto the top of the gigantic pickle, bouncing up and down like a trampoline.

The crowd erupted into uncontrollable laughter as the photographer bobbed up and down. His camera still in his hands, he made the most of the situation and snapped photos, sending flashes across the crowd. His bouncing became a highlight of the event, adding a touch of spontaneous comedy that no one had expected.

Meanwhile, Mildred, not missing a beat, announced over the microphone, "And here we have the world's first pickle bounce house, folks! Only in Quirkville!" She winked at the crowd, her eyes twinkling with delight.

The day ended with everyone laughing, taking turns bouncing on the pickle, and enjoying the absurdity of the event. From then on, the "Pickle Appreciation Day" was an annual event, eagerly anticipated by the citizens of Quirkville. And as for the photographer, he became an instant celebrity, remembered forever as the man who bounced on the world’s largest pickle. It was a day of laughter, unity, and most importantly, pickles.

And so, in a town where the unusual was usual, and the mundane was frowned upon, Mildred’s Pickle Day proved that the only ingredient you need to turn an ordinary day into an extraordinary one is a dose of humor and a gigantic pickle.

New homes Elementary and High School are in a separate towns district?

Hello! I’ve recently purchased a house in a town with a great school system that my fiancée attended. But the home we bought says it falls within another town’s school district. Unfortunately, that town’s schools aren’t as well regarded. I know not to jump to conclusions, rankings aren’t everything, etc.

How does this work? If we live in a town and pay taxes for that town, I would think our kids should be entitled to attend those schools, no? I grew up in a different state and bordered another town and was closer to their high school, but still attended my town’s high school.

Any explanation or guidance is appreciated! Thanks.

Research on self-taught individuals class vs students class

Are there any studies comparing:

1- A self-taught student class without a teacher but with access to the internet and a library.

2- A traditional student class with a teacher and access to the internet and a library.

Class 1 with full freedom and autonomy.

Class 2 with scheduled school hours.

Finally, a common test to measure who has learned more.

Is there any study of this kind or similar?

14 year old sister needs some accelerated educational options

Hello, so my 14 year old little sister has been homeschooled extremely poorly, to the point where I wonder if she would pass 2nd grade.

She is now in public school, and has been for 2 years, but she is drowning. She is failing all of her classes and has now started skipping school because she does not believe she will ever catch up. She might also have dyslexia or some other learning disability, I am not sure, my mom has refused to let her get tested, but she can hardly read.

I am sick with worry for her, and need help. Are there any programs that could help her catch up? Simply putting her in a lower grade won't help, she has years to catch up in, and she already thinks she is stupid, so that will not help her fill in all the gaps, and it will not help her feel capable. What can I do?

For context purposes, I am much older than her and live 2 hours away from her with a family of my own, but I want to help her as much as I can.

What I am not looking for: homeschool bashing, and dealing with issues with my irresponsible, neglectful mother, that's what my therapy is for, haha.

How does popular opinion reconcile "teach how to think not what to think" with calling for "character education"?

"According to Gallup polling, Lahey added, 90 percent of adults support the teaching in public schools of honesty, acceptance of others, and moral courage, among other character traits. What adults hope occurs in schools, however, is in sharp contrast to observations provided by teens themselves." - Paul Barnwell, from The Atlantic

I look at that quotation and I think two things.

A. You'd think they'd show up for school board elections more often, then, and...

B. How does popular opinion reconcile this with "schools should teach how to think, not what to think"?

The latter is a phrase I've heard all the time... including from Christian conservatives, despite the article's blaming of declining religiosity. It's a phrase I don't recall ever seeing challenged directly, including by Christians or by conservatives. The irony is, it's precisely because of adults' moral values that they are reluctant to use the taxpayers' money and the attention of a captive audience to impose them.

When I was a teacher, the parents who would show up at parent-teacher night were generally better behaved than their sons and daughters. Those who show up might be an unrepresentative sample, but still... I'd most definitely rather deal with a moral framework pushed by the parents if the sole alternative were the undiluted ill behaviours of their sons and daughters. So make no mistake, the idea of teaching right from wrong in schools appeals to me too. But I'm left wondering why no one else who feels the same way has been willing to challenge "schools should teach how to think, not what to think" more directly. Does the idea of character education not constitute at least an exception to that general ideal?

AI Hallucinations

With rapid advancement in generative AI various incidents have surfaced where reportedly AI has hallucinated and produced erratic output. In the world if AI hallucinations are defined as generation of non sensible or unfaithful output by AI when compared to the provided output. Such hallucinated output easily hoodwink users because they appear fluent. Personally I have the trust issue on AI because I as an user wouldn't know the basis of the result. Also the inaccuracies can gravely prejudice and individuals reputation which is protected as a fundental right And there has been few cases already to prove its inaccuracies. I'm not defaming AI. Just that analysing the impact of it. It's also predicted that it's gone a take away jobs. Can AI surpass Supreme Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is super intelligence., it can never be. It is said that "artificial intelligence" leverages computers and machines to mimic the problem solving and decision making capabilities of the human mind.

However AI can never rival Supreme Intelligence, connecting with which makes us true to ourselves. AI does not have the aura.By coming into Sun's aura we get vitamin D What do we get from AI? That aliveness , the joy of being human that sense of pride we get from linking one thought with another and reaching conclusion, realising something that empties the subconscious and provide healing AI cannot help you feel things which means it will have no concern and compassion in uts interactions AI is like a crutch providing information at the press of the button, but as consciousness is ever evolving according to the Supreme intelligence One can implant an AI chip in the brain of a paralytic man and help him walk maybe But until that fellow is not on path of growth spiritually what good will that walking do? Everything takes place according to one's karma . AI would only deprive us our realisations and denying the opportunity to sow seed for the next evolution. I would like to hear from others about their view on AI vs the SI

If I do not have a GED would I still be able to take a electrician program at a community college?

I had to move states when I was young. I was doing just fine in school but moved due to a money issue. When I switched schools they dropped SOOOO many of my credits and I would have need 3 extra years of highschool. At my school I was able to leave early senior year because I did above and beyond to make my last year easy.

I know it's stupid but when I went to the free GED class in my city it was SO boring and I just stopped going. I know it's ignorant of me but it is very hard for me to do things that bore me.

I am trying to better me and my family's life and would like to try to learn how to be a electrician but I'm unsure if I will need a GED to get into the community college.

I'm sure no one here can give me a answer with 100% certainty since I'm sure it varies state to state, but I'm just wondering what you guys think?

Applying to study in America from England

Since being young I have always wanted to study and eventually work in the US and I took part in an exchange program last semester where my host University in London allowed me to take a semester abroad in New Jersey. I instantly fell in love with University over there and I am wanting to transfer there full time (I have completed 2/3 years of my bachelors so far).

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience or has knowledge on how private loans work for someone trying to fund their education abroad. I do not come from a financially stable family so I cannot find the tuition myself and of course SFE does not work when studying abroad so my only route would be to go for a private loan.

Anyone got any recommendations for lenders, experience or any advise on this on this and it may sound stupid but are there lenders who do not charge you payments on your loan until after you graduate like SFE but for overseas studies?

PS. I have applied to transfer and I am hearing back on my acceptance which would give a breakdown of my tuition (I have been told it is very likely I will be accepted). I know it will cost a lot more than University here in England but I hope with my degree in Data Science and Analytics I will be financially free in the future I know it is a risk but it is a risk I am willing to take. This will allow me to continue studying in the country I have dreamt of and possibly help me create connections for a graduate role in the country.

Good grades may be a predictor of high academic achievement but good grades don't necessarily reflect future success or happiness. (conjecture based upon anecdote)

Even those with poor grades deserve a high quality university/college/upper level education experience if they choose to pursue that.

Education has been a topic of great interest to me for many years. It's never been my profession, the closest I've gotten is substitute "teaching" and school boarding, but I was raised to believe that education itself has a value regardless it's practicality.

I started dropping out of school in 7th grade on a routine basis, and when I would attend throughout my junior/senior high years it was sporadic and limited in duration. But I was a wanderer and a reader and lived among other wanderers and readers. I learned new and complicated things on a daily basis for the most part.

But my grades sucked, and I never did get my HS diploma from my home town.

When I joined up with the Army in 1975, I had to take an entrance exam that was required of all entering personnel whether enlisted or commissioned. I came in at around the 80% percentile. I did get a high school diploma at the order of my commanding officer; and I took and handily passed a handful of CLEP exams on my own.

I did attend college for a short time: night time job with day time classes. The "Writing Well" class has been a blessing in my life for sure. I've also self-educated in various areas of sciences with an emphasis on programming. I've learned about animal husbandry and radio programming and so much more in my life.

And if you want to talk finances - I've done well above the average.

All of this with really sucky grades. Don't throw those with sucky grades to the side. We're extremely valuable.

A modest proposal for eliminating the concept of cheating with AI in education

Parents and educators are afraid that students will increasingly misrepresent the work of AI as their own. While the fear is understandable, because AI is here to stay, perhaps we should structure students' assignments in a way that allows them to use AI as much as they like, and in no way be actually cheating.

Here's how it would work. A student is given the assignment to write an essay on, for example, the implications of fusion energy on our future. Each student is given full and unfettered access to AI in both researching the problem and writing the final draft. In fact the final draft may be 100% written by the AI, and that would not be considered cheating.

So, now rather than teachers evaluating the students work on how well they composed an answer to the problem, they will be judged on how well they prompted AI to compose the answer. It's as if all students are promoted from the laborious and mundane task of copywriter to the more creative and intellectually demanding task of editor-in-chief.

There's one other component to this major shift in student education that needs to be addressed. Once the students have handed in their work and it been graded in terms of how well they used AI, there is one more step before the assignment is complete. This second part would require every student to stand up in front of the class and explain, in their own words, the written work that they had submitted.

In this way teachers are assured that students are using AI in the best way possible and that each student understands what the assignment has intended to teach.

Under this paradigm shift in education, there is no longer any such thing as cheating on an assignment by using AI. It would in fact be impossible for any student to use AI for the purpose of cheating. Teachers would be happy. Educators would be happy. Students would be happy. Sounds like a win-win-win. What do you think?

Teachers (primary school) perspective; anyone working with a tablet? (Galaxy S8 Ultra)

Hi there, fellow teachers or other interested readers,

First of all, my first language isn't english, so sorry for any typo's.

I was wondering who is using a tablet as day to day device to take notes, follows progress of their students or any sort of things for extending their methodes of teaching by using a device.

Since the day I started as a teacher we're using a ton of paper to follow progress of our children or taking notes for administrative purposes. Since we have so many excellent tablets like the S8 ultra or the ipad Pro I was wondering who's using a tablet every single day to eliminate the things I mentioned above.

Feel free to mention your positive and negative experience.

For people who are wondering what we're using now; chromebooks with a touchscreen. A bit too heavy and not that many apps or a stylus to write on.
