How did you choose a masters program? Advice on narrowing down interests?

I am struggling to decide. My undergrad was environmental science. I have no specific area of interest—everything (conservation/policy/water/data science) sounds fascinating.

Is there a reason to study something interesting but useless?

Im a fan of history, different types of places and time period interest me, especially thinking about egyptology and assyriology. Is there a point of studying these? I want to learn about them, but i will spend 3 years as a hobby for this and wont be able to find a job with it. Opinion? Edit: Im also curious about something else. What do you guys think if someone attends university multiple times to get multiple degrees? Is it a stupid idea?

Advice on which field to choose needed

I (14F), an international student, wish to go to an Ivy League or a T20 college. However, I am having trouble deciding which field I should pursue. It has to be a math or science "well paying" field. Not to come off as rude but "do what you truly like" isn't really an option (I'm Asian so..) so the fields to choose from are limited. I was thinking of doing CS but I'm not really good at it, I still have 2 years to practice but there are already people my age who have been practicing for years now and I doubt I can compete with that. Then I briefly considered medicine (I enjoy bio too) but it's super long and we can't afford fees at an Ivy League for 10 years or so. Now I'm thinking of law or finance, are those good options? Or are those fields extremely difficult to study as well as find jobs? Are there any other suggestions for fields I can choose from? If you give a suggestion, please note down the cons of that field too.

Thanks!

Kami: Is It Worth It?

Hello fellow educators (and maybe some students). I am looking for some feedback on Kami for a research paper I am writing in my graduate program at Shepherd University in West Virginia.

I chose this topic as my middle school purchased Kami for educators to use this year, and I want to take a good look at its advantages, disadvantages, and how effective it is when used in the classroom. If anyone is willing to fill out the 5-question Google form below (it will ask for an email as well for data tracking) I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

So an international corporation arrived in my neck of the woods and bought several schools, and their first two "director" level hires are best described as mediocre - frequent job-hopping and known locally as being less than effective. So to my mind, these hires raise all kinds of red flags about the corporation, the judgment of the big boss, the satisfaction or likely success of working with or for these clowns etc. Thoughts?

My friend is applying to graduate school 12 years after graduating college. The deadline is tomorrow and he forgot to get letters of recommendation. What do we do?

Hey, I'm posting this for my boyfriend since he doesn't have reddit.

He got a bachelor's in psychology about 12 years ago, and applied for pre-med (and got accepted) but then got a job working as a machine repairman making good money and ultimately decided not to pursue higher education until now. He decided he wanted to be a psychologist and apply for graduate school at the same college he went to rather last minute and has worked extremely hard to finish his application in 2 days. The deadline is tomorrow and the only thing he is missing is 3 letters of recommendation. He could ask his old coworkers and employer but they aren't exactly the academic types and he feels bad contacting them on a Sunday, the only two professors he was close with are dead and he does not want to reach out to any of his other professors as it has been 12 years and he doesn't think any will remember him. Does anyone have any advice on what we can do?

Thank you in advance!

I’m stressing over about knowledge.

It hurts me to know that something I’ve been passionately studying for the past 2 years, that I only know so little about the topic. It sucks making me realise how little we know as humans, I’m 16 and a female and i love attaining knowledge weather that is from science, politics, health and more! However I’ve realised that there is soo much to learn that it overwhelms me on where to start? Should I start on one subject or do all of them the same time? I’m also behind in my school work but can’t stop stressing about wanting to broaden my understanding!

A game that can teach education

What if a game was designed to teach the entire high school education system?

I know small mini games have been made before. But I’m referring to a full blown proper game with HD graphics for learning. That teaches you high school education.

I was thinking of an mmorpg, where you learn the content through quests and answer questions through boss battles.

Please comment below your ideas for games that can teach education

Ideas for assistive technologies for children/teachers living with learning disabilities/disabilities.

I'm working on learning some programming and AI. I plan to build some project but while I'm at it, I would prefer to build something that might be useful in the education sector.

I'm looking for ideas from parents/teachers for any simple tool/technology they wish existed to help themselves or their kids with learning challenges.

I'm open to all ideas but I'm well versed with voice assistants, text-to-speech, speech-to-text and web application development and so any ideas in that direction would be great.

Example: An idea that I was given by someone I know in person is to build an app that reads words/sentences with controls to let the child decide how slow/fast it gets read. I was told it will help kids with Dyslexia.

PS: Feel free to DM me if you would rather discuss privately.

A waste of time

I was just told by my mom that the reason I was placed in special education early on in my school life was because of my bad writing skills! Yea you heard it right! Not my reading, math, or speech skills but WRITING! Even after I perfected my writing I was kept in IEP and still am today (Senior in High school) im fighting very hard to be removed but they always make up excuses. I never had a problem learning however, with IEP I learned slower than everyone else thus, why I had a difficult time understanding stuff because IEP damaged me to that point it was even to the point that I was bullied!

Why are these subjects mandatory?

So here I was sitting and doing my chemistry homework when a thought came to my head. Why am I even doing this? I've lost years of sleep, gained years of stress, felt horrible anxiety, and developed super bad depression all because of the school system. Now, don't get me wrong. There are more reasons to why I have these problems but for sure one of them is mandatory school subjects. Why exactly do we need to take math, science, and history past 8th grade. Honestly, even 8th grade is pushing it a bit. Like, when will I ever need to know algebra or geometry. I don't plan to major in math or science. I want to become an artist/writer, yet the one place designed to help me get to that goal forces me to take classes I don't care about. I mean, chemistry is interesting but not to the point where I have this incontrollable motivation to finish the homework. It's so much work that seems so pointless to me. In my opinion, English is the only subject that should be mandatory until 12th grade. It is the class that helps students be literate and articulate. Everything else is a waste of time for people that don't wish to pursue those subjects. The reason it's a waste of time is because you most likely won't need most of this information in your adulthood and you probably won't remember it anyway. That's why I find it so astonishing when teachers and parents alike are surprised that their student or child is failing their classes. In our eyes, they're boring, useless classes! One of the reasons I am so angry about these mandatory classes is that they take time away from you doing what you love. The homework is given in piles (not to mention how confusing it is, probably because you didn't pay attention enough in class to actually understand it(and you didn't pay attention because the class is boring)) and it takes hours to finish with no sort of satisfaction in the end-just an endless grind. Due to the amount of time allotted to finish this homework, including essays, you don't have enough time to do the things you love-in my case being drawing. And if you do decide to not give so much time to homework, then your grade on those assignments will be low which leads to a bad overall grade (and if you want to improve that grade for your GPA (which colleges look at), you have to dedicate even more of your time to do corrections of extra credit, if your teacher even gives that.). As some will know, to get better at drawing, you must practice, practice, and practice. How am I supposed to practice after I have just grinded through my homework to the point of exhaustion? There is another way though. Just tank the bad grade to get more time for drawing. Well, then you have insane amounts of pressure and discipline coming from your parents and teachers. Then, you might develop depression which almost always results in apathy (like what happened to me). Apathy is a horrible thing as you lose any motivation and interest in ANYTHING you like which is a horrible feeling. Anyway, I am here to ask one question: Why Are These Classes Mandatory?

You may think the comment is a little sarcastic. I’m 16 and in grade 10 (also know as year 11 in some countries) and I decided for fun to sit the 6th grade paper and guess what!! I got over half of them wrong. I don’t if this has to do with how substandard the education system is or is it normal to forget things you’ve done years ago} or could this mean that I’m just genetically inferior in terms of intelligence.

Question;

A friend of mine was told incorrect requirements for something she needed at college (I'm not sure what, but she is currently a high school senior), but she was told by counselors to take AP Statistics when she needed to take calculus. Senior year ends in 4 months and she's just now finding out, so it's too late to switch classes.

Is there anything she can do to get that class done for college? I was thinking searching for a summer class, but how would she get the high school/college to recognize it as legitimate? Would it even be possible since senior year was already over?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Top questions you should ask to enhance your child’s Education

When considering a private school education, there are a number of questions parents should ask to ensure their child is getting the best education possible. When reviewing potential candidate schools, you can start to interview schools to see what each has to offer and which seems like the best elementary school for your child. I never went to high school and I want to become a physicist.

Well, i never studied, never had an education, and I want to become a physicist and go to college. Do you guys think that it'll be hard for me to become a physicist? I would like to do the SAT test but I guess that everything thats in it it's just to complicated for me at the moment.

How long will i have to study for, in order to do that? What would I have to learn? And if I get my GED diploma, will that be enough to attend college classes? Or would I have to study more?

I'm currently studying for my GED, but everything that's in it is just basic stuff, it's nothing like the SAT test. And I studied only by reading books and watching videos in a website called covcel that specializes in teaching u everything that's in the ged test.

What are your tips for a student on how to phrase questions well/simply if TA has difficulty understanding English?

My experience is that they may know all the words but sometimes someone can parse the grammar/sentence structure differently in their head. There was a situation where I asked a question, and the whole class understood what I asked.

But the TA interpreted the question structure differently and we became very confused.

I'm trying to think of strategies of things to type in the chat during the online class to keep the sentence structure very simple and unambiguous. Not sure, maybe stick to very short sentences? What might you try?

How can I learn when death exists?

I am curious about lots of things. Lots of things. However I don't know a lot beyond a few niche topics. My curiousity far exceeds my knowledge.

Whenever I try to commit to a field, I feel this pressure on my chest, this sense of urgency. It's like death is right there, sitting next to me, telling me not to waste my time on these futile pursuits because I will be spontaneously taken away, eventually, anyways. Back to reddit I go.

Recently I have been learning Japanese, but there's this overwhelming feeling of missing out on other topics. I procrastinate, and my progress is suffering.

I'm in high school, and I'm very close to failing math. It seems that there isn't enough reward for all that spent effort, time. I do not want to be a mathematician. Only the basics are necessary. It's just another language, one I'm not interested in learning.

But I have these feelings of envy, you see. I see people on the internet solving complicated physics problems, studying hadron colliders and quantum chromodynamics. But I know to learn this - to feel elite - I need to grind algebra. To speak their language I need to learn the alphabet. But the alphabet takes a long time to learn. And the knowledge is abstract, it takes dedication and interest...lots of spent time.

I know I know nothing, and there's no time. I have my peers' expectations, my parents' expectations, societal expectations, cultural expectations, and worst of all, my own. Everything is arbitrary. And I'm racing against the clock.

Note: Some of you may say not to worry about it. But if I ignored expectations, my life would mean nothing. I would watch anime and listen to music, all day, in bed. I would sleep through my classes. Little means anything to me; I have to set expectations for myself so I'm not a failure.

As a thought experiment, is it possible for people to leave 1 star reviews for random highly rated schools to lower their ratings and trick clueless people?

It's happening Thursday Feb 4th @ 5:30pm central and you can sign up at labeducation.net.

This workshop will provide a framework and reference to implement strategies that promote tolerance, anti-racism, and critical thinking in virtual and brick and mortar classrooms. We will discuss the foundations of anti-bias practices, provide sample student scenarios for educators to practice their “teacher responses,” and create a space for educators to discuss best practices for their community.

Language immersion for toddlers?

Apologies in advance if this is not the kind of post this forum was intended for ... please feel free to remove if that’s the case.

I’m a Canadian parent of a 2 year old living in an English speaking province and I’m considering signing her up for French Immersion kindergarten.

Our native language is Russian - which is what we speak with her at home and I’m getting conflicting information on whether adding French this early on would affect her English language development.

Any advice, experience, opinions or resources would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance

How Technology is Changing Education

Summary: Interview with Andy Matuschak on how different learning models will help students in different ways. They discuss how students best remember material and how we should consider cognitive science when constructing a teaching technique. What is the purpose of primary school? Why do we group children by age for learning in school? What is the best way to learn from flashcards?

Trying to go back to school

Hey y’all, I’m trying to go back to school. I have a bachelor’s already, but I’m looking to get into a different career. I thought I found a school I would like, but I was told by admissions it’s not really a place for adults lmao. What are some good schools that accept people who have a degree/aren’t fresh out of high school? Should I take some community college courses first to boost my chances?

Transfer before or after associate degree?

I’m confused and lost right now. I’m almost done with my Cybersecurity associate, currently taking 3 classes and need 3 more to finish. I talked to advisor to transfer to university to major in Information System Manage. He said it’ll take 1/2 days to tell me which classes that’ll be transferred and which ones I need to take, he said I toke mostly computer classes not business classes, but one of my classes I’m taking now has 2 section quizzes and I need to buy $129 code to do it (will it effect my grade if I don’t do it since it’s just 2 section quizzes). I don’t know if I should wait 2 days to see what advisor says or SHOULD I COMPLETE MY ASSOCIATE DEGREE THEN TRANSFER TO UNIVERSITY?

Help a Doctoral student!

Dear Community, I am conducting an internet-based survey to collect data for my dissertation entitled: “THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ACCULTRATION AND RISKY SEXUAL BEHAVIOR AMONG WISCONSIN HMONG YOUNG ADULTS".

The purpose is to examine sexual risk behaviors among Hmong young adults, which is a subgroup rarely addressed in pregnancy intervention programs.

The data collected from the survey will contribute to a better understanding of the factors that influence risky health behaviors among Hmong young adults, which may contribute to the development of more effective health intervention programs for Hmong individuals.

The survey is accessible via Google Forms https://forms.gle/qgGM3RhhcQHR3Eo89

Please read the questions carefully and respond honestly and to the best of your ability. All responses will be anonymous; I will not collect any names or emails addresses to identify participants and additional action will not be required once you complete the survey.

I hope to have 300 Hmong young adults ages 18-25 years old, to participate in this study. Please forward this information and the link to others who may be interested in taking the survey.

Thank you in advance for helping me with this important study.

Sincerely Dawn Jarvis University of Arizona Global Campus Doctoral Student

Kindergarten/Primary Reading

Hi there,

Canadian parent here. We are an English speaking household with some knowledge of the French language. We enrolled our daughter in French-Immersion, she is now starting to read.

We haven't even begun teaching her to read in English. The teacher speaks 80%(?) French in class and is now sending home sight words etc.

I guess what I'm getting at is, am I fine to just do the French stuff with her, and she'll indirectly pick up the English? or should I be giving her English alongside it.

I also get so frustrated when I ask her what a sight word is, after just going over it. She can't seem to focus. I hate the thought of getting upset with her at all let alone at 5.

Any advice?!?@

I’m a student in university and I want to set up a group chat for a class. The professor has given us permission to do this through groupme, but is concerned about academic dishonesty occurring (during quizzes, tests, etc.).

I was wondering if anyone knew of a chatting app that I could freeze during tests and such and turn back on when appropriate and perhaps moderate a bit?

I need to know more about GCSEs. please help

i’m home educated. i grew up this way, i’ve never gone to school or any kind of professional class. i’m 16 and my education has been neglected. through this i gained a lot of social skills, i am an articulate individual but this does not help me pass GCSEs to get into collage or get a job.

on top of this i am dyslexic and struggle to grasp (particularly english) work quickly.

i have been studying on my own and trying my hardest especially since the new year but i feel clueless despite burning through the basics quickly.

if anyone has information about maths and english GCSEs to share (questions to expect, what to know thoroughly, will maths be a combination of everything i have been studying or more focused on anything in particular? honestly any information) i would appreciate it massively.

How do the GCSE maths (and further maths) compare to the American curriculum?

I understand that the American system separated mathematical topics and students are made to study that topic for the entire semester, while the British GCSE touches on many things over the course of 2 years (Grade 9 and 10). I started calculus in GCSE, but heard that American students don’t touch calculus until Grade 11/12.

Also I didn’t know how to flair this - curriculum wise, this is exactly that, but I am not the teacher here haha

SPED TO GEN-Ed career advice!

Hello! I REALLY need some wisdom. I have been working SPED (paperwork city) for too many years at a district that pays very well but I have to drive 30 miles to get there one way. My wife and I also work at the same school. I interviewed for a middle school ELA (Gened!) position and got the job! The pay cut is like 6-7k but the drive would only be 5-10 miles, plus it’s gen Ed!! What would you recommend? To me it spells out happiness, but the pay cut and uncertainty it will be not good scares me. My wife and I have about 10k of student loans left and want to buy a new vehicle soon.. so few factors. Complaining about the job and drive but content with pay, or taking a pay cut to potentially be happier and less of a drive?

Do private/independent school staff get paid commission?

Oh man here we go. I'm really sorry if this is the wrong place for this, but I need to settle an argument with my husband. I'm so sorry in advance. I'm from the UK.

Basically I rang a local prep school and the receptionist was super, super nice. I explained that my child (5F) is getting bullied in the local state school and that it's not being taken seriously so I'm looking at our options. She replied that they've had two children join this academic year from our school due to bullying. She was so, so nice.

My husband is hugely conflicted about private schooling. He's an account manager in tech. His response (to me, after I related the call) was "of course she'd say all that. She's on commission."

Even typing this out I find myself struggling to believe that prep school receptionists operate on commission but can a third party working in education please write this down so I can show it to him. Thank you.

Some people have told me 15 hours a week, if this is the case I'm ecstatic!

If I'm able to get accepted into my city it means I can probably continue working full time without having to end any of my commitments.

Remote learning , and higher education outcomes

I realize that college education has integrated a lot of remote learning type models for over a decade now . But there was still lecture , labs , and other in person experiences that simply can’t be duplicated in a totally remote atmosphere . With less structure , we are losing time management skills . We are losing teamwork . Collaboration on a conference call is not the same . How much value will be placed on degrees by the private sector ? How will this affect job placement ? Personally in competitive markets actual job experience will be much more preferable .

ADVICE: Parent doesn't understand why I'm not teaching from home while I'm sick with COVID

I tested positive for COVID-2 last Tuesday. No serious breathing symptoms yet but it feels like the worst cold/flu of your life. I took one day off last week and posted asynchronous work. Friday I taught half a day. I had many well wishes from parents over the weekend to rest up and recover.

Fast forward to today, and I still feel like death. I teach another half-day this morning and then assign asynchronous work the rest of the day. I get 6 text messages in a row from a student's mom, who had previously been supportive, telling me a long story about how when SHE had COVID, no one helped her and so she had to suffer in silence so her kids could eat, and that when she wanted to give up she looked at her children and that motivated her, and her in-laws couldn't help because of infection risk, and she's working so hard to keep her family healthy, and it was so traumatizing for her youngest daughter because she couldn't hug Mommy while she was sick. She sent a final message telling me "You're young. Make a good effort and you will be fine".

What do I say to her? Am I no longer allowed to take sick days because of this WFH crap? If this was a normal school year and a normal sick day I would have laughed the message off. Now I'm feeling both deathly sick, guilty, and resentful that this Mom is implying I'm some young, lazy weak thing who won't suffer like she did.

Grading

I took a math final and I did all my work on Microsoft Paint. I forgot I was supposed to do it on paper but I just used MS Paint as scratch paper. I calculated a 12.8 out of 15 questions. That's about a 85 percent. I was graded a 52 percent on my final, making my overall grade a D. This is because I was missing 13 points of work and 1 extra point because I didn't name the file correctly? I lost more points from other things than the actual test. I was devastated, I felt as if I failed everything. I was usually A-B student but this year is just so much different. I have so many questions. What do I do? I can't bring up the grade anymore because the semester is over. I have so many worries.

Does The Order of Degrees Matter?

Hey there,

I’m in the UK. For personal reasons, I couldn’t take science ALs back when I was in school. Now, I’m interested in enrolling in a medical degree but I don’t want to pay for the foundation year and I’d rather add a few more thousands and finish a 1 year Masters in Health Management as I’m sitting for the ALs and waiting for the results, which seems to be a better investment as I qualify for the Masters because I have a relevant degree. Now, when I finish the undergraduate medical degree, will the Masters still count? Will employers be impressed or rather put off 😄. Thanks!

Good Teacher

A good teacher has the best individual character in society with a clean body, mind, dress & homeland. He has a healthy study taste, skilled in science and art, knows how to use the best time management. A thinker with a promising personality, aware of the problems and needs of the society, knows the art of imparting knowledge & not miserly in imparting it, an expert in the skill of character building, have a dedication to work & mission. Take interest in the subject he teaches, always adapt to new knowledge and new technology.

He is sincere to the student, attached to them, know the psychology, natural abilities and potential of the students. He positively highlights their abilities and teaches them according to their mental level. In other words, he teaches them difficult, & complex issues in a very simple way according to common sense. Present his knowledge in an interesting way for the students. Act upon his teachings first and then encourage the students to act. Accountable for personal character, confident and not be confused, only a confident teacher can instill in students the courage to ask questions.

Possessor of high character, immensely patient & tolerant and not react negatively or aggressively. Forgive others in a dignified way, fearful (fear Allah), kind like a father, free from prejudice, adopt truthfulness and boldness regardless of likes and dislikes, an activist and advocate the commandment of good and prohibition of evil, do not seek any worldly reward or praise for the process of teaching and learning, be a facilitator and distribute love, and so on. Now possession of these attributes will make him a good teacher and his lacking in these attributes will make him a bad teacher. In short, teaching is a very difficult task. (Pakistan)

Digital Divide vs. Accountability

Ok, there is a digital divide. Yes. I get that. It’s real. Black & Brown families are having a tough time. I get it. I’ve seen it. I witness it daily as an educator in an urban, low socioeconomic school district. But... Accountability. We can’t just blame remote learning entirely on the digital divide. I have students whose parents allow them to stay up until 2-3am & sleep through most classes during the day. That has nothing to do with the digital divide. I have students who are using their new computers & hotspots to play online, bandwidth sucking games, & rocking YouTube, TicToc, etc. Households with more than one child often have one playing online games on platforms like ps4, Xbox, using a shit ton of bandwidth while the other is trying to zoom but gets kicked off or has “bad reception.” I’ve had students breaking multiple laptops & tablets (obviously not being used for school purposes). Hell, I have one student that has gone through 7 devices, breaking them all. 7 fucking computers & tablets. I have several students whose parents don’t do shit & are actively not looking for jobs, etc. I have students are are wizzes at TicToc, making YouTube videos, this this & that, but apparently don’t know how to turn on the video to a zoom, or unmute themselves (which is obviously complete bullshit). I know there’s a lot more to the story & I’m not right about everything and am missing valid aspects. My point though is that there needs to be some accountability & its bullshit to just blame remote learning on the digital divide. This falls on parents & in some, if not many cases, secondary students themselves. Rant over.

Skip college pre-req classes

I'm trying to skip 2 math classes to get to Pre-cal or calculus 1. I emailed the professor and he just forwarded my email to the assistant to the chair, whom asked for my transcript. I didn't do so well in math during my high school years, but I can do it a lot easier now since online college. Is there a way to skip community college pre-req math classes so I don't have to take 2 semesters of bs math classes?

Hello, my name is Mark and I've recently graduated from University having got a BA in Practical Filmmaking.

I'm hoping to complete an MA in Screenwriting and it's always been a dream of mine to study (and live) in the US. Does anyone know of any scholarships or schemes I can look at to help with this. I tried asking at my University but they said they don't help with that kind of stuff, which is a shame. I feel a little lost and overwhelmed with the process right now.

I am a very hardworking student and have overcome a lot of adversity to get to where I am today. I'd love to continue this journey in a country I've always loved.

Any advice or help would be appreciated! Even if someone could point me in the right direction =]

Technical Blue collar vs Technical White Collar Job?

So I'm in that stage of picking an educational/career path and this is what I've been getting as advice/input from people around me:

"Trades are in demand, you can start making money right away after 1-2 years of school or do an apprenticeship and make 6 figs in no time". "You can open your own shop/business in a couple years" "white collar office jobs aren't as in demand and so many people are out getting degrees to compete for those few jobs"

And on the other side of the spectrum I have ppl telling me

"Trades aren't great, your body will ache later and most plumbers don't make 100k, tech is booming get a cs/eng degree".

I'm leaning towards getting a degree but really don't know.

I'm good in school and hands on work but that aside I would like to hear from you guys.

Thoughts - Interactive Pre-College Summer Programs

Hello!

I was wondering if anyone, or their children, ever participated in a pre-college interactive experience (almost like a 7-10 day on-campus prep camp for areas of interest/majors). I am in my 30’s and remember receiving those in high school and being highly interested in them; although it was never feasible due to my involvement with sports.

My sister is a junior in high school and just received a letter and informative catalog for “National Student Leadership Conference”. I’m curious how beneficial it will be/how it will aid her college admissions, scholarship opportunities, etc. The program itself will cost nearly $3.5k, and aside from being just a great experience for her even without its’ potential benefits, that would be financially difficult to swing.

If anyone has any experience and/or input on this specific program or others alike, their pros/cons, overall impact on college admissions, etc., I would greatly appreciate it! TIA!

Teachers - What do you think of doing away with summer vacation?

Between winter break and summer vacation, students only spend about 160-180 days in school. I've seen parents struggle with managing their children's time during summer break. This probably disproportionately impacts low-income families who can't afford summer camp or daycare. Many children are also under-nourished during school vacations since they rely on school lunches.

Students would also not un-learn the previous school year's curriculum (research suggests that students get "dumber" over summer break).

In terms of the economic impact of this:

1) If an additional 60 days are added to the school year for students Grade 5 - Grade 12, students could graduate almost 2.5 years earlier, allowing expansion of the school curriculum and adding billions of dollars in productivity and tax income for the government. It would certainly help the fiscal position of Social Security.

2) Teachers would make more money because they work more months. An extra 2 months of work would translate to a 25-40% pay increase.

3) Parents could also work longer hours and stay at home parents would have more of an incentive to find work.

I'm really curious to see what teachers and administrators have to say about this!

Does it make any sense to study criminology/psychology after completing a master's in international economics?

I want to get another degree with something in social sciences, but further away from economics as I had taken many sociology-related courses in my int. economics. My dilemma now is criminology vs psychology.

The question is, will it be in any ways useful to do such degrees in combination with what I have i.e. is there enough jobs that could involve a combination of both. I am certainly not looking to become a therapist.

Thank you.

Looking for a Zoom alternative

We have an after-school program that pairs volunteer mentors with students in a Zoom session. We typically have 2-4 students in each breakout room with mentors. We are looking for a solution with the following features:

  • Preferably web-based (no app downloads required)
  • Breakout rooms
  • Simultaneous screen sharing (multiple students can share their screen at the same time, while mentors can easily switch back and forth between students' screens)
  • Free or reasonable pricing (can't pay per student/mentor)
  • No accounts required for students

The whole Eton admissions is so confusing to me.You have to apply at 10 so they would consider you at 13?And if you don’t you have to wait until 16 to apply for Sixth form?Geez. Also,is it really hard to get a scholarship/bursary?And what would you consider better,Eton or Harrow?

Looking for Public-School Teachers in the States that would like to take a survey to better understand your needs during COVID and ultimately better support students!

Teachers,

THANK YOU for the work you are doing every day to serve your students in these unprecedented times. 100Kin10 seeks to better understand and highlight the working conditions teachers are currently facing during COVID 19, in particular those of teachers working in schools with largely low-income and/or racially diverse student bodies.  In order to do that, we want to hear directly from teachers about the challenges you are facing, the resources you need, and what if anything about teaching has changed for the better during COVID.  During January 2021 we will be surveying PK-12 public school teachers and conducting focus groups to hear what teachers have to say.  We hope you will add your voice to this important conversation BY CLICKING ON THE LINK BELOW.

Please also share this link with your colleagues, the more voices we hear the better able we are to support students and teachers’ needs. 100Kin10 is committed to supporting students so they receive a great STEM education, and with this report we are focusing on the needs of the teachers working with the most marginalized students ensuring a focus on equity and racial justice.

To participate in the SURVEY, please FOLLOW THIS LINK. Note: to participate in the focus group you must fill out the survey first.

\*All current PK-12 public school teachers who work with largely low-income and racially diverse student bodies are eligible to participate in the survey.  4-6 total focus groups will be conducted, with a focus on including teachers of color, STEM teachers, and/or teachers who primarily teach students of color.*

\*Teachers may participate in both the survey and focus group.  All teachers who complete the survey will be entered into a drawing to win one of three $500 Amazon gift card prizes.  Teachers who participate in a focus group will receive a $75 Amazon gift card.*

Thank you! I really appreciate any and all support from this community. Reach out if you have any questions!

Why would a school not share slides from virtual tour?

I recently attended a virtual tour of a private elementary school and asked the administrator to email the slide deck so I could look over it again when making my decision. I am a visual person so looking at slides is very helpful to me. I will be attending other virtual tours and want to keep the differences straight in my mind. She seemed very uncomfortable and said she would not but might send me specific slides if I wanted. A couple days later I emailed her asking only for the slides with the daily schedule and curriculum outline, and she emailed me that she would not. I do not understand why this would be a problem- there is no information on those slides I can see needing to be private. I feel like the school is trying to shut me out for some reason and it has soured me on sending my daughter there. Can someone tell me why a school administrator would not want to send me these slides? Is there some legal reason I am just not getting?

I'm currently studying Diploma in Power/Automobile Engineering, can I change my major to Computer Science or something and continue from the grade where I have finished my Diploma?

I'm on my last year of diploma, in 14th grade (College). I absolutely despise my current subjects and want to move to different subject from 15th grade (University).

From where I come, students have almost zero choice over what they want to study (You can only choose 'Science', 'Business' or 'Arts'), the government decides what you are going to study. If I want to continue studying in my country I'd have to choose the predefined subjects.

I was wondering if I were to study as a international student in any polytechnic universities from US or Canada, can I change my major and continue from 15th grade or do I have to restart from the beginning?

My results have been average to good in college.

Idea to improve engagement during remote teaching

I frequently hear stories about the challenge of engaging students in a remote setting. My background is in webcasts but I thought this would be relevant here too.

When I record a webcast, hardly anyone watches it. The people who attend the actual event the first time are the only ones who end up viewing the content. Am I right in assuming this is a challenge you face with your students? If yes then that's a shame because a video recording is a great resource!

I want to create a free tool that makes video recordings collaborative. With the recorded video, the student gets an interactive transcript they can use to skip to certain parts. Below the video player is a reddit-style discussion board for students to ask questions and collaborate, or attach resources they've found helpful.

Is this a dumb idea? Would you or your students find any benefit?

I feel like my memory is weak.

Growing up I didn’t do well when it came to knowledge in life. I’m a b-c student and such. Growing up I feel like there was something that blocked my intelligence or my brain to develop. I didn’t even know what a condom was! However now I’m 16 and feel inadequate and feel as if I’m just genetically inferior in terms of education?? Likewise, my brain just feels empty, the other day somebody offered me a cuticle gel and I didn’t know what a cuticle was. I always knew it as nail. However now as I’m coming to the end of my high school year I feel as if I won’t manage through college because of my forgetfulness. I’m overweight so I don’t know if that contributes towards that. I’ve also reduced the amount of time I spend on my technology to 2hours a day which is a big achievement. I further want to broaden my vocabulary. I didn’t really focus on my school and academic work and was careless when it came to homework so I feel as if that also contributed towards my weak memory, maybe spending too much time in technology in the past did also. I would spend over 15 hours a day on my technology. Now that I’ve accomplished to discipline myself to reduce screen time I’m hoping to read books to broaden my knowledge and understanding of things but I don’t know how. I feel as if there is too much I wanna do but don’t know where to start . I’ve way behind online school.. I’ve got soo much work to do but keep procrastinating but then yet again I wanna educate myself on other aspects on things like politics for example. Is there anything I could do to better myself. For example to keep up with work and anything to help me with my intelligence. Sound stupid but yeah. are there any subs in which I can learn knew things. I posted in the sub stupidly assuming there would be intelligent people who could give me personal advice from their own experience/ knowledge.

Swearing & Homophobia

In one of the year 6 PE classes I teach during the week we've got quite a few kids who are using some pretty awful language (mostly fuck, crap, and shit) but they're also using some terms I'm a lot less impressed by - gay boy, batty boy, retard, and such. On Monday I'm going to speak to their head of year about how we're going to solve this because juvenile swearing I can put up with if it's not disruptive or directed, but I'm really not happy with the latter terms, especially given that about half my mates are somewhere along the rainbow distribution. Just shouting at them won't get anywhere, so how can I help explain to these kids why they shouldn't be using this kind of language? Next year they'll be in secondary, and they'll wind up in serious trouble either from their teachers or from someone taking offence and taking matters into their own hands if they carry on like this.

NYTimes Lesson of the Day: Amanda Gorman and ‘The Hill We Climb’

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/20/learning/lesson-of-the-day-amanda-gorman-and-the-hill-we-climb.html

Note: This is a special edition of our Lesson of the Day. We have invited Carol Jago — longtime English teacher, associate director of the California Reading and Literature Project at U.C.L.A., and past president of the National Council of Teachers of English — to suggest ideas for teaching about occasional poetry and “The Hill We Climb.” Ms. Jago is the author of many books, the most recent of which is “The Book in Question: Why and How Reading Is in Crisis.”

In this lesson, students will learn about Amanda Gorman, the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history; how she came to write “The Hill We Climb”; and how it fits into the tradition of occasional poetry. They will also learn about Ms. Gorman’s belief that poetry is political, and that reading and writing are instruments of social change. Finally, they will be invited to create their own occasional poems.

Thoughts and Advice on Lindamood-Bell for Compensatory Education

Hello,

I am a foster-to-adopt parent to a 16yo who has suffered a lot of trauma and disruption in his past. In his previous residential school, I was his surrogate parent for the purposes of his IEP. They failed to provide him a FAPE for 11 months, leading to a Department of Education complaint and a finding in his favor. He was ordered 50 hours compensatory education.

An IEE was done for him, due to a complete lack of trust in the school. The IEE found that based on his presentation he may have a diagnosis of dyslexia, but it was impossible to tell due to the number of schools he had attended and the amount of past trauma he had suffered. When I asked the IEE administrator her thoughts on a best use for the 50 hours, she recommended I look into Lindamood-Bell for help with his reading fluency, as it is the thing that will most impact his future.

Has anyone here had experience with Lindamood-Bell? What may 50 hours of compensatory education with them look like - would it help, would it engage him, would it just be a beginning before I'm asked to pay for more? I have looked into their website and found they offer camps, but it seems like those may be more than 50 hours, and may be ultra-expensive if I were to cover beyond 50 hours. I'm just looking for a more neutral take on them before I give them a call myself and get their sales pitch.

Thank you!

Uproar as Duterte targets state university

Administrators and students at the Philippines’ national university have condemned the Defense Department’s termination of an agreement that requires state forces to seek permission from the university before they can enter its campuses.

Established in 1908, the University of the Philippines has built a reputation of academic excellence as well as for dissent against rights abuses.

The institution has been critical of President Rodrigo Duterte’s controversial anti-terrorism law, which critics say gives the government more oppressive powers, and of extrajudicial killings.

“The department finds this agreement a hindrance to providing effective security, safety and welfare for the students, faculties and employees of the UP,” Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said in a letter to the university president.

He also claimed the outlawed Communist Party of the Philippines was secretly recruiting on university campuses.

Essays are overrated and outdated, learning by doing is the way to go.

Going to college made me realize one thing: the learning approach is severely important in progressing forward and actually passing the course.

Growing up I always loved deconstructing inventions and see how they worked with the limited knowledge I had; curiosity is our very own precious tressure, something that compels us to do things we didn't think we can do or thought about doing before. So why does the education system completely regards that in the most crucial stages growing up?

I failed college, and there is one reason why; Essays.
I think I speak for all when I say Essays is one of the if not The reason we procrastinate and not engage in our school studies, and in fact is the reason this post will most likely be ignored after a glimpse of this huge text blocks I'm writing right now. A lot of times writing Essays require you to research things you will never research ever again, it forces you to push useless knowledge that will only take temporary space in your head and overwhelms, stresses and just brings down your mood.

Now, let's look at a different learning approach.
to be honest I have not researched what this kind of approach is and if it is at all acknowledged in today's education, but I will speak from my experience. Being a foreign student I never was taught to write Essays, research skills, and among other things. So so when I was forced to do all of that all of a sudden it was overwhelming and just made me give up quickly thinking something was wrong with me, but NO! nothing was wrong with me, it's just not how my mind worked. You see, I store newly learnt knowledge not by writing blocks of text and certainly not from researching things just because I have to, but by tackling problems head-on with the little knowledge I have only to solve the problem out of curiosity and come out the other side with newer, expanded fresh knowledge that will forever remain in my head. I did NOT choose to do computer science for the teachers to sit and watch us write Essays in school hours half-dead then going home doing the same. exact. thing. NO! I chose computer science because it gave my mind curiosity to fiddle around with and problems only solved by thinking outside the box. Teachers are meant to be close people that you trust you future with, trust that they will tell you to keep going and encourage rich thoughtful experiences, it's not their fault though it's the educations system at large thinking it's a good idea to squish students to the same kind of box. It's not Industrial Age anymore.

TL;DR: learning by using the limited knowledge to solve things only to come out with more knowledge is my and many people's approach to learning, so why are we still writing useless forgetful Essays?

Looking for potential book critics

Currently searching for educational leaders willing to review a short book that I wrote on educational leadership. The book intertwines science fiction and some of the more pressing issues that we see in public education time and time again. The goal is for the reader to take away certain lessons from a variety of real and fictional characters and use those experiences to craft a masterful leadership style. The focal points of your review are to ascertain the viability and accuracy of what I present. It is between 28,000 and 29,000 words and I would need to pass on your name, email address, and possibly other information to my potential publisher. Please write me if you are interested.

Suggestion for Schooling Path : Misinformation **SERIOUS**

3 years ago I had an epiphany on my front porch about what I wanted to do with my life. I want to study and (hopefully) fight the effects of misinformation on the people. I didn't pursue this dream because I thought the idea was still new, and therefore there wasn't a defined ladder to climb in which I could get there.

Before this, I was dead set on getting a law degree. Is there a recommended path of schooling in which I can take to achieve this profession?

If I am in the wrong place, please forward me to the right one.

Thank you for your time!

Are there any scholarship-fund programs for self-learning students, or students that don't take classes in official universities?

I am a self-learner. Ever since I took a break from traditional schooling in the USA, I've come to discover that I learn drastically better without fitting into some curriculum or schedule governed by an organization.

My career plans do not depend on credentials, but on shown skill and experience, and self-drive to pursue greater understanding of my areas of interest. This makes one thing clear: I have no reason to spend outrageous amounts of money on a service that will do a worse job than I would on my own, amassing debt that would potentially take my lifetime just to repay.

The way I plan to learn is drastically more affordable, and I would become just as educated, if not even more educated than the large majority of people who would go about learning the same things in the traditional "go to college" approach.

Despite any of this, it seems that any and all efforts to support higher education are ONLY for those who plan to use it for some entity that has been given educational authority. This is mainly due to the tax pseudo-laws that aim to decide how you're "allowed" to spend your money, but there's presumably nothing stopping someone from creating a scholarship program that recognizes self learners as students that also need funding.

I figure there must be something out there for students like me to get financial aid, but I haven't found anything like that myself. As for student discounts, almost all of those expect you to have a student-id from a university, which is obviously something I lack.

Right now I have a student-id for a year-long course in quantum computing, but that was only because IBM fully sponsored enrollment for 5000-7500 applicants, and last I checked, "The Coding School"/"Qubit by Qubit" is not an available organization when trying to verify student discount qualification...

How to help an illiterate parent w/ possible intellectual disability

I noticed my mom couldn’t read at a pretty young age, and have tried my best to balance school while helping her on her journey to literacy. She started taking adult literacy classes a couple years ago, I’m a senior in college now and she doesn’t seem to have progressed significantly since I started school. I noticed that when helping with her homework she’ll easily forget something that you said a second before. When reading her writing I noticed that she constantly will switch letters around in a bunch of words which leads me to believe that she’s gone this long with undiagnosed dyslexia. I’ve tried a bunch of ways to help, but nothing seems to be working. Is there a way to help her?

Also, she’s an immigrant but speaks perfect English almost to the point where her accent is hardly detectable.

We were taught different things in school.

My wife and I talk about current events often. It’s come to my attention that a lot of the stuff I learned in school is heavily biased and in some cases not true. My question is am I stupid for believing some of the things the school has taught me over the years including college. I know this is no surprise since a lot of things I’ve learned in my life I’ve proven this fact but I’m at a pass with myself thinking that everything I have learned is wrong. I often think of myself as someone who Knows a little about a lot of things. But now I’m not sure. I just don’t know where to go from here do I start looking things up as if I was in school at 40 years old. Or do I just start believing people blindly when they tell me information that I previously have learned because it could be false. I just don’t know what to do to be Better equipped for conversation without saying things that are false. I came to this sub Reddit because I figured it would be equipped to give me some sort of advice to move forward. Thanks for listening to my problem.

Guys just think about how hard it’s been for millennials compared to the generation before us right? Now think about gen z and what things will be like for them. Even pre covid they were screwed. And now since covid they are SO behind on education.

In the amount of time these kids have been out of school, which is this entire time let’s be real even now kids aren’t getting an education at all still, the government could’ve revamped the entire education system in America by now and rolled out a brand new and improved system.

One that focuses on things people NEED to know and isn’t filled with a bunch of random pointless things. They could focus on trade skills, current and future tech such as more classes related to coding and software, more classes on life skills, classes focusing on industries such as the real estate industry, auto industry, computers, construction, medical, social work/psychology, emergency services, politics, finance, food, etc.

Imagine if we had classes that focused on real industries and a student would first take a generic class for each industry (very broadly and they would still need to pick the 4 or so main ones that interest them) say freshman year, and this class would teach you all about the different careers in each industry, what the work is like, the pay, what skills are needed, maybe what a day in the life of one of these employees looks like and how much they enjoy it, and all the different routes and aspects that each industry has. Like REAL WORLD knowledge that kids so desperately need before they are thrown out the world after graduation.

And then come sophomore year the student can then pick classes that get more specific. Let’s say you keep some core classes such as math, English, science, and history. So you have 4 classes that focus all on life skills. And these classes could also be tied into your core classes which could actually replace them. For instance if you’re taking construction industry classes then they could weave math into these classes so that you wouldn’t actually need the core math class and instead could fill that slot with other life related things. (Or maybe we could use less time in school so that in school time is optimized to the times that studies show students absorb the most and actually learn.) but continuing on with this, let’s continue with the construction industry. You could then have classes chosen by the student that would focus specifically on residential construction, or commercial construction. And you would’ve already learned general things about these routes freshman year that would’ve helped you decide which route interests you more.

Let’s say a student chooses the computer/tech industry. Sophomore year they’d choose classes like software or web development, cyber security or networking, computer technical support, etc. They could be taking multiples of one industry or could be learning about at least 4 different industries and the skills they need to work in those industries. This would be having kids graduating high school with the career readiness of some college kids, or maybe college kids that are halfway through their degree at least. AND possibly not in just ONE industry but FOUR.

With each yeah the classes would get more and more specific to that industry. OR the kid could go back and choose the level 1 industry class that’s offered sophomore year. Doing this a kid could learn the very basics of 12 or more industries. Those very basics would likely land them jobs in most of these careers. Especially the ones that don’t actually require that magic piece of paper and only require the knowledge to do your job.
