I developed most of the online proctoring bypasses, and founded an exam writing company. Most of my students' exams I write personally. Ask me anything.

I've seen a few posts from professors wanting ideas on how to subvert cheating, but they were old and I couldn't really respond to them since they're archived. I actually love academia, I just needed the money during COVID so I started the proctor bypassing and exam writing company. I will gladly answer any questions you have about what would/wouldn't work to prevent cheating and why. What makes cheating and what makes cheating difficult.

And I'll even give you a preview: The 2 things which make cheating very challenging, which nothing else compare to.

1. Not being able to back-track questions. This is a soapbox issue for me also, because for my entire educational career I was one of those students who used the full exam time, finished last, always reviewed and doublechecked his answers, and it does feel very unfair to be denied this in online exams. But it is necessary.

2. An external webcam, ie your cell phone, pointed at your laptop. Screen recording is useless. Not only does an external webcam pointed at their laptop make cheating very difficult, it also makes cheating very dangerous. Because if anything goes wrong, it will be seen by the external webcam even though it's not captured by the screen recording. You will catch people red-handed this way. It also makes solo cheating (the majority) impossible; you have got to have a helper who feeds you answers invisibly.

3. (bonus) put free response questions on google / chegg / quizlet with trap answers. I guarantee you that you will catch people with this. Even if people are hiring tutors, many of them will unwittingly hire scam tutors who are just finding their answers on google. This risk of being caught red-handed will seriously limit students capacity to cheat.

Whether you use proctorio, proctoru, pearsonvue, etc. doesn't really matter. They're all just about equally fallible when you know how to beat them. These two solutions are guaranteed to have a major impact. Ask me anything and if I can give you any advice on how to catch cheaters, I will. I may be a traitor helping people get A's, but I also respect the efforts of teachers who try to make the processes fair for everyone. And I do believe that ultimately, for the most part, the people cheating on their exams legitimately are cheating themselves more than anyone else.
