Thoughts on allowing redoing assignments?

Full disclosure: I am a teacher. I have work at a variety of schools with different policies on this. Some have allowed unlimited rewrites of tests (but not assignments/projects), some have allowed only two projects/assignments (but not tests) to be redone (one per term), and some have had a hard no re-do policy (sometimes an alternative assessment might be created for students to show their understanding instead).

Putting aside concerns about teacher workload (in this post, it could be brought up in the discussion), I personally believe redoing assignments has been beneficial, and not just from a grades standpoint. I think it encourages students to have a Growth Mindset where failure doesn't discourage them, and they keep learning until they have mastered a concept.

So what are people's thoughts on this topic? What research have you personally read that has influenced your thoughts on this topic? I would be very interested in opposing viewpoints especially.
