I'm an undergrad as of now and I've been constantly thinking of ways to combine my programming abilities/interest in computer science with my stronger passion for psychology. An idea that I've been thinking heavily about over the past few months is the idea of creating an application dedicated to creating more incentives for students, particularly students who suffer from ADHD and other learning disabilities, but perhaps really any student, to enjoy developing structure, routines, engage in studying, basically activities that tend to provoke lower levels of dopamine on average for many people/children.
My main idea is actually directed towards children, being an interactive program that allows for parents or teachers to turn the idea of teaching their ADHD-child discipline into a fun and interactive game for the child. The program would essentially be a video game, where the parent can create varying stats (or the default settings can be used). The child would then be rewarded or penalized through this game by the parent or teacher. For example, a child has a virtual pet dragon. If a child spends 30 minutes reading, the parent can choose to provide some sort of currency that the child can spend or perhaps allow for the dragon to grow a pair of wings or gain the ability to breathe fire.
You may already know that there are similar apps to this, but the unique quality to this particular app is the fact that there is an authoritative presence that controls the app. Because of this, there is more incentive to remain engaged. The parent can even use real rewards (whether it be money or whatever) if they kid completes enough levels (completes their chores) in a given week/month.
I thought that going to graduate school for psychology or a relating field of some sort would be a smart decision due to the research needed to even bring validity behind the ideas. My goal would be to somehow bring the implementation of this application into therapeutic practice or the classroom but I doubt I could just create an app for use in these settings without any research to contribute.
(TL;DR (tried my hardest): As a rising sophomore undergrad that's passionate when it comes to learning about ways to make learning/studying easier for those who suffer from psychological disorders and learning disabilities, especially ADHD, but also enjoys using the skillsets learned through computer science, I'd like to either create or help contribute significantly to the design of applications to aid in these areas. What area, if any area, of psychology would be right for this?)
