This is likely a controversial question or suggestion, but I present it simply for the sake of discussion.
I am a math teacher in a larger mid-sized (11,000 students) school district. Right now, with nine days until kids come back, we still have 101 teaching positions open. It's bad. Nearly all of these are math, science, and special education positions. Is it wrong for a district to have different pay scales based on the demand for teachers in different content areas?
A similar, but slightly different point: as a math teacher, I do the same sort of prep work as other content areas. However, I am certain that I have to do more tutoring, parent contacting, grading, and out-of-hours work than, for example, a physical education teacher. I 100% value the work of all educators (I know that that phys. ed. teacher very well could be a reason why some students even show up to school), but does this warrant the discussion of different salaries for different content areas?
