My oldest is a high school junior. Their sibling is a freshman. My freshman has several health issues, one of which is a bowel disorder. This has caused the freshman to miss school for a class period occasionally to shower and change, as well as all of this week because of a medical procedure. We have very openly communicated these health issues with the school since before the year started. The freshman principal, classroom teachers, the support team, counselors office, attendance, nurse, front desk staff- we have discussed this with all of them on a regular basis. We are still having trouble getting work for freshman to do while out of the building and some teachers have yet to respond to emails from last week but continue to give zeros for missed work. There is an IEP in place and part of freshman's plan outlines bathroom stuff. We found out tonight that the principal has pulled the junior aside multiple times this week and last to question freshman's health issues and attendance, asking why freshman is missing so much for bowels and what they are doing while at home. Principal also discussed freshman's grades with junior and told junior that freshman probably can't come back academically from missing all of this week. I am at a loss as to what else we can do to prove the seriousness of freshman's health problems. If what we are doing this week and over the weekend doesn't work, freshman could end up hospitalized again and that has been shared with the school. This isn't just a kid wanting to avoid school. It's an ongoing, serious medical problem. I'm also very angry that the principal put junior in the position to explain and defend health issues that are very well documented and discussed with staff. It seems extremely inappropriate and a violation of privacy to go into details about grades and health problems with an older sibling. Is that something all districts do or are we just unlucky?
