Received an offer to teach at a charter school - first time teacher - asked to negotiate salary, thoughts?
I'm an aspiring teacher and career changer. I interviewed at a local charter network in my city, and one of the largest. I initially applied for the apprentice teacher role. After my interview with the principal, he offered me a promotion, salary increase, sign-on bonus and the job on the spot. Normally it takes time to decide one's candidacy, but I suppose he was desperate for teachers and saw potential in me.
Details of the offer are listed below:
Job offer at one of the main large charter school networks
High school, 9 to 12
Teaching Mathematics, full-time, resident teacher, 5 classes, (upgraded from apprentice teacher)
Salary step of $59.250
Sign-on bonus of $2,000
Professional development and curriculum assistance throughout teaching
coaching and mentoring during my first year
free graduate schooling, (only out-of-pocket expense is $1,500 per year)
Start date of October 8th, working from home, and in-person October 12th
I interviewed on September 23rd, 8 AM. I was given the verbal offer at 9:30 AM.
Job offer was sent on Friday, September 24th, 6:00 PM
I asked to negotiate starting salary this morning to $65,500.
Thoughts on anything I should have, what I have done so far, what I might want to do moving forward between the time I am waiting for them to get back to me and signing the offer?
For full transparency, I intend to accept the offer, I just want to make sure I am asking for the right things and not leaving anything on the table.
