To what extent should the school work be based on student's own research?

Hello,

I am concerned, if not infuriated, by the amount of independent research assigned by the teachers across mainly the humanities subject (geography/history) to high school students. As a student, I find it utterly ineffective and devoid of inspiration and motivation that we seek knowledge and wisdom not from the teachers but from the internet for the majority of the time. I am a high school student, and I have teachers in Eng, Sci whom I really like and appreciate their effort and commitment. From my understanding, it can be a teacher's problem, or it can be the curriculum's fault. Either ways, I believe part of the education is not reaching even near its full potential. An interesting feature of Australian education is its freedom to research on the internet, but to what extent should you think this should be?
