Is there any data that suggests whether it is better to have a '3 year' college system like in the US, or a '4 year' college system like in the UK?

What I mean is, does the extra year in the US help US students in anyway? Is there any data to look at that supports a 4 year university experience rather than a 3 year one?

EDIT: I was obviously stupid and got the degree lengths the wrong way round - it's FOUR years for the US, and THREE years for the UK
