Is there any pedagogical data to suggest as to what age it is best to change from 'Primary' to 'Secondary' education?

And for example, whether it is best to have a 'Middle School' of some kind?

Also, A lot of teachers that I know in the UK seem to think that the jump from GCSE's (16 age exams) to A-levels (18 age exams) is very big; is there some date to suggest that having THREE year course fpr the final part of secondary education would be more beneficial?
