I’m a high school teacher (mostly juniors and some seniors) and lately I‘ve been thinking about the conversations I have with some of my students that don’t seem to have much motivation for what they see in their future and have seemingly given up on their education. When I ask them what type of job or career they might see themselves wanting or enjoying they don’t know or they are not very realistic. I firmly believe the “college is the best route” is a false and dangerous narrative that we need to stop pushing on kids- as a millennial, I have learned that college degrees do not automatically equal jobs, that they can lead to debilitating debt for many, and that so many people don’t even get jobs in the field of their degree. There are so many good, well-paying jobs that don’t need a 4-year degree and have lots of opportunity for growth that kids need to be taught about before falling into college just because they think it’s the next (and only) step.
ANYWAYS my question is, given that 4-year degrees are no longer a requirement or guarantee for a good job, would you say that a high school diploma IS pretty much a requirement for anything someone might want to pursue post-high school?
