Advice on IBDP Subject Selections

For context my scores in MYP Chemistry is usually around a 6-7, Biology maybe 5-6, Math around 5-6. Those times I actually didn't really study that much to get a good score.

I want to go to the science/medical sector for my bachelor's, which mostly need these 3 subjects being HL in the IBDP program. What are your thoughts on my choices, do you think I can get a good score?

Need some advice! Is a dual degree worth it?

So I've decided I'm going to University next year and I'm currently 23, moving full time to part time and studying online my L3 Adult Care RQF and Access to HE Nursing course just as a little background. I also hold only Level 2 functional skills in English and maths but here's the issue... I really love the idea of two University courses however I am not sure as to whether it's actually worth it in the long run!

I've picked Learning disabilities nursing and social work (dual registration) and Learning disabilities nursing for the other at two different universities. The thing that concerns me is that the dual registration degree is a bit further away BUT they are both the same length course of three years. Is it worth the while taking them as separate degrees or doing both as a dual?

I'm concerned that given the time span, I will not get as much out of the course being a dual degree and hold the same respect as i would doing them separately and gain just as much out of the course?

Respectfully, both courses cost £28500 covering the three years of tutoring BEFORE other travel, uniform, trips etc even come into it so I don't really want to make the mistake on joining the wrong university for me.

What would be your advice or what is your thoughts?

Help me Decide

I am a Bangladeshi teenager. I want to have my graduation degree in CSE. But i only have two options :

  1. Study advanced diploma CSE in Canada(as i don't have enough money but settling there would help me have a good life maybe). As living there long enough will permit me to have a PR.

  2. I can study in private universities which will cost much too.

Living in my country will result in a comfortable future but not a good one. Because they really have low salary for the CS graduates. Whether, in Canada i can earn much more normally and have a better environment and lifestyle compared to home.

What to do you think? What should i do? Any suggestions?

I put together a lesson on Marine Biology using the video game Beyond Blue. You can read about it and access the lesson plan here.

Hey everyone. I recently put together a lesson on Marine Biology using the video game Beyond Blue. It is a really wonderful little game that can be completed in about 2 and a half hours. It was made in collaboration with the BBC and has documentary footage embedded into it. Here is a write-up about the game with my lesson plan and slides attached. The materials are free.

This is my website Hey Listen Games where I make all of my curriculum around teaching with video games available for free. Hopefully some of you can find something useful.

Art teachers or art graduates please help me

Hi, so i’m a few years close to being a grade 10 student and people are making me stress out on what I wanna be in the future. Im honestly not sure what I wanna be but I wanna pursue digital art, something like being a game artist or maybe doing graphic design. The thing is what course do I have to choose? Im not sure if I’m asking the right question but my mother is suggesting that I go Com-Sci, does that have anything to do with digital arts? Should I choose that or something more art related?

Good elementary-focused informational books without so much anecdotes?

I’m looking for some good informational books about elementary-focused vocabulary, restorative practices, SEL, reading comprehension, etc.

My only request is that the books themselves focus on actual information/steps and less on anecdotes. I am working on PD courses and all the required reading had me excited because I felt I would be learning more, but I can’t tell you how little actual information I got and how much more, “And Jimmy graduated high school despite the odds thanks to the wonderful words spoken by his teacher that day many years ago.”

I’m open to anything regarding ELA (because I feel like I need help there) and SEL.

Hi all, sorry if this is a dumb question, but I intended to work for a year after graduating high school, but i've been working for 4 years now. If I wanted to apply to university/college, do they still consider your highschool grades for the pre-reqs? Or at this point are my highschool credits considered obsolete?

Should I find a new career?

I'm finishing school to become a K-12 educator (school counselor), but I am having doubts about my future.

A criminal charge that I had dismissed is still tied to my name from a simple Google search to published police logs in newspapers with the charge. The charge was public indecency, which I believe it was unfairly given. But despite my personal feelings: even though I was able to have it dismissed, it absolutely doesn't look good.

They at least would see it wasn't a type of situation where a minor was involved or that I'm not some weirdo masturbating in a park, but.... Still, y'know.

I pass background checks fine, just not the Google check.

Is it time to pack it up or nah?

The Benefits of Self-directed Learning

Self Directed Learning

Have you ever engaged in a learning process entirely for the sake of learning? Perhaps when you tried mastering any musical instrument or learning a new language. The memories might take you back to your childhood or summer vacations. Unfortunately, because we do not experience a lot of genuine learning in schools.

Self-directed learning as the name suggests is a learning process entirely tailored by the individual as a student. In its true essence, it is about a person taking all the necessary steps needed for learning just out of curiosity.

We are all born curious. But soon the exposure to the materialist education system kills the inborn instinct of curiosity-driven learning. Yes, the education system is great for producing students with a restricted set of skills and no critical thinking. But students lose most of their learning capacity under the rigid and restricted school systems. Where schools and colleges have a confined learning program for all students. To state the fact every student is a unique individual and simply doesn’t deserve to be subjected to the same learning process.

Self directed learning benefits

The benefits of it are countless. From the personal development of the student to the overall prosperity in the society, self directed learning can do a lot.

For anyone pursuing self directed learning, it is a totally new approach to life more than just an education method. It is wrong to assume that SDL requires the student to leave school or college. Allotting as little as one hour every day to this method can do wonders for anyone.

  1. Potential Discovery:
This type of education enables children and students to truly discover their potential. And allows them to discover the secret to learning any skill or discipline in life. School systems are based upon teaching the ‘what’ of knowledge. Whereas SDL does not limit the creativity and interest of students they get a deeper understanding of the ‘WHY’ and “HOW’ of knowledge.
  2. Skill Building:
Once engaged in self directed learning students embark on a journey of learning a host of skills. Not just the skills related to a certain discipline but social skills too. The independent pursuit of knowledge instils a sense of critical thinking. Moreover, the students on a self directed program learn a great deal about time management and research skills.
  3. Breakthroughs and Inventions
  4. All Doors For Knowledge To Flow

I am seeking advice on my math/cs studies!

Hello fellow scholars :)

Now that that’s over with… I am currently a high school student very much so interested in math/cs. I am seeking advice/tips on how I can learn advanced math (ex: calc/linear algebra as opposed to trig). There is an abundance of topics in math to learn from and my tiny brain wants to but can’t learn it all at once.

TLDR: please give advice to a HS student on how to learn math on the side while staying focused

|Update| Acceptance into school #2

So, some of you might remember I posted about getting into grad school but for the spring semester even tho I applied for this fall. Well the deadline to accept the admission for there is the end of august. But today I met with the director of the second school to really discuss where I’m at and the fact that I’m sorta a special case coming from no professional experience. Well, it was a great conversation and he really seemed like he wanted to help me with my endeavors. He knows that I lack experience and that the program is mostly designed for people currently working and wanting to make it to their second job. But he says he thinks the program could help me make it to the first job. So he said he’s going to tell the person in charge of the admissions paperwork to push thru my application. So that means he accepted me for the fall semester. He really empathizes with me and where I’m at. He told me to really think about it before making a decision but if I decide to, I’m going to contact him again and he said he would help me pick my first two courses (I can only take 2 at a time) and then even later to contact him again and he will connect me with their internship person. I now have to make a decision about this but idk. Like I said in the first post, the first school is closer to what I want (mass comm with PR emphasis) while this one is strategic comm. I’m definitely the type of person who is willing to go the extra mile to “catch up” so to speak and I’m fully committed to this. I want to take advantage of every opportunity and resource I have access to which is something I didn’t do as an undergrad and totally regretted

Let children be children!!

I remember my cultural diversity professor teaching me anti-bias learning. Her whole spiel was challenge beliefs. Funnily enough, I challenged her whole curriculum and brought it all down. She said, old white males are the real racists. I said well, in this country, a lot of people of colour have moved in within the last few decades. So thag explains why there is a large population of old people who happen to be primarily white and unfortunately like most old people, they don't care for the language police. Then she said why sports players taking knees is so hated. I said sports is unifying in nature and please don't bring politics into it as most watch it for the game, not the messaging. Third she said something about stopping people from being racist. I asked her how can I control other's actions? I can only control my actions and take individual responsibility for it. We should get our house in order as an example before telling people to cut their grass while our lawn is unkept. Then she told a story about a child correcting her educator's accent and that's a form of racism. The child is 5 years old, they don't understand racism. They don't even understand race. They watch and learn before they understand. All childhood parents correct children's pronunciation, so is it reasonable to believe the child acted in a similar way instead of casual racism? At the end, it went so bad that she stopped responding to my words at all. She showed us a picture of some dude who retired after 30 matches. I said Mandela stayed in prison for 30 years and this guy is supposed to end racism? I asked her who are you going to bring people to your side of you're simply going to shun them. Daryl Davis, is a prime example of how you treat racism!!! God help us all... And people please stop over-correctimg yourself. Going from racism to anti-racism. Find a common spot without racism.

How do I become a more well-rounded intellectual?

Having never really listened at school, and not done much extra curricular reading, I often feel incredibly stupid in some conversations -- is there any advice you'd give to someone like me? Growing up I had - road smart - parents, who never really made me passionate about specific subjects, or educated me much

I think these influences are influences I don't want to pass down to my children (when I have them), so I want to actively change my overall knowledge & passions/ interests

Any advice?

Masters to help with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (London)

Hi there.

I’m a 28F, with business background, currently working in technology. I am an avid reader, specially when it comes to philosophy and science and can’t get the SDGs out of my mind.

For those who don‘t know - Google is your best friend! - is a theorical framework that groups the world’s greatest challenges and allies in 17 categories.

I am very disappointed in myself for working just for money, for survival, I want to do something that dignifies me as a human being and that truly makes a positive impact on this world. I truly miss having interesting conversations and actively making a difference.

There is so much I dont understand yet and was thinking about doing a masters, that will not only give me part of that knowledge but also a network of like-minded individuals that I could ally with. I am looking for an intellectual community to learn from.

Is there any masters you know of or community? I’m based in London.

Thank you very much!

IN YOUR OPINION, how should the federal government spend/allocate the ARPA funds earmarked for education ($170 billion) in order to best improve the system?

Back in March, President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) which allocated $170 billion dollars for education, which makes it the biggest ever single investment in our education system. On its face, this is a really wonderful opportunity, but without plans and clear sense of how to improve the system, some worry that the moment (and the money) will be squandered.

IN YOUR OPINION, how should the federal government spend/allocate the ARPA funds earmarked for education ($170 billion) in order to best improve the system?

This topic was discussed on a recent episode of the Learning Machine podcast, and we were interested to see what the broader education community thinks about this idea.

How to mix things up when teaching online to 1 student

When I asked about teaching for the first-time online, I got so much great advice (that I'm using!) Hoping this group can help me with my current teaching online conundrum!

I'm teaching a 5-day camp with one-learner, an hour at a time. The topic is analysis heavy so we're reading and discussing texts. The student is fantastic -- has great ideas and we have good conversations.

But I want to mix things up more and make our interactions less back-and-forth since it's just us and that gets a bit old. I switch topics regularly and do some write-share but I'm struggling to think of other types of interactions that don't require at least one more person. Would love to hear how you teach discussion-heavy topics with one student.

Feedback on alternative “learning style” model. Tailoring learning by modifying where to start in the abstraction layers.

I am a high school student, and I have long been told about the different learning styles (kinesthetic, reader, auditory, etc…). I’ve always struggled with this concept and I have constructed an idea that may be an (admittedly immature) alternative.

It appears to me based upon my limited experience, that people learn best when they start on a different level of abstraction, somewhat dictated by cognitive ability. This is probably not a very good description of the concept, so let me provide an example or two.

A sample of people are trying to learn how to program a niche application. There are multiple layers of knowledge needed: basic computer science concepts, basic syntactical knowledge, functional knowledge of how to construct larger programs, knowledge of the niche topic for which the program is made, and sufficient knowledge of the app concept to create an implementation.

The traditional high-school method is to start by teaching basic concepts, basic syntactical knowledge, and then to move down the list, starting at the lowest level of abstraction. I have ventured into this specific example in my own personal time, and I was confused for a long long time and was never able to grasp low-level concepts. I then had the idea to start from the step of "functional knowledge of how to construct larger programs". Learn about how programs are constructed at a high abstraction, then learn more and more specifics about the actual language. When following this strategy, I learned how programs are structured, and I had a place to "slot in" the low-level knowledge. It ended up being significantly faster for me, and I learned a lot more. Some people may need to start at layer one, two, three, or even the highest level abstraction.

Another example is math, you learn arithmetic, algebra, then stats, calc, and all the other more challenging disciplines. For myself and I think most, arithmetic was a great place to start, but I always struggled with algebra. I'm genuinely not very good at it, I cannot factor very well, and I struggle. I recently took an online class on stats and pre-calc. I found myself learning more about algebra than I ever did when I was learning just the low-level concepts (factoring and all that stuff). I was unable to learn the topic unless I had an overarching framework in which it was implemented.

Some of this could be mediated by cognitive ability. I would never be able to start programming by learning on a specific niche application, but I'm sure someone can. In the same breath, I could never start by learning variable calculus, but I'm sure someone can.

I kind of just want to bounce this idea around and see where it goes, I understand in a classroom setting this may not be the most practical, but on a theoretical level, what do you guys think? I wanted some feedback from people more experienced. Thanks!

Side note: excuse the bad articulation, I have yet to develop the skills required to communicate ideas like this well, so its quite verbose and might not be the most clear.

National Board Association release FAQ: "Can We Require Teachers/Staff/Students to Get Vaccinated?"

In case anyone is wondering what local school districts might be looking at to determine if they can and will require vaccination of teachers, staff, and/or students in your district in the coming months...

The National School Boards Association has released this FAQ, including case law and other touchstones, to guide those local/state decisions.

The summary, as near as I can see it, is that unless local and/or state laws or Governor-level emergency declarations specifically prohibit vaccine mandates, your state, your local township, and/or your local district ALL can and may make vaccination mandatory for teachers, staff, and/or students (with the usual medical exceptions and OFTEN the usual religious exceptions, though I note that my own state [MA] has, in state law, a caveat that if the state Dept. of Public Health declares an epidemic or health emergency, that can override the ability for parents to take religious exception for their kids)... and would not need to negotiate the terms with unions.

MDM for K-12: How to Pick the Right MDM for Education

Digital transformation of classrooms has been on the rise in the last decade. The upsurge in the use of mobile devices in day-to-day lives made mobile adoption in classrooms easier. Deploying technology in classrooms has also been incremental in filling the digital divide, making education more accessible, and enabling remote learning. With the ever-increasing student population, embracing edtech and digital devices to make learning and teaching easier is a choice of schools and educational institutes not just in the developed countries but also in developing countries.

5 points to consider when looking for a MDM for K-12

Affirmative action

Affirmative action is racism

I Firmly believe that affirmative action is racist and wrong.

Part One: It doesn’t help black people

If your problem is weather you can get into MIT or not then you are not very disadvantaged, it also reduces the achievement of people who are from an ‘disadvantaged’ back ground who can genuinely enjoy the same success without the aid of affirmative action.

In some cases people are seen as less capable just because of affirmative action may have been an element during the consideration of the application.

Also standards are made to make sure that one can keep up with the rest of the workforce or student population, if due to the lowered expectations for entry the a lot of the admitted subjects may not have the ability to catch up.

Part Two: It throws us Asians under the bus

We Asians aren’t privileged, many of us comes from a poor socioeconomic background, many of us have parents who work day and night trying to afford us an education. We value education because we know it’s the way for upward mobility, we spend days studying when the other kids are playing outside. We have to work just as hard to have the same results. But because of our culture and the colour of our skin they seek to
Destroy us, they seek to strangle us and take away our rightful equal opportunities.

The act of affirmative action is meant to be an act of charity from white men, but the opportunities they are giving away to people of presumed disadvantage aren’t theirs to give! It is stealing, it is a robbery. They are forcing another race to give up their shit! How is this different to the authoritarian society on the other side of the ocean.(an act of charity is giving up your own shit and not other people’s.)

Think about it, we are assigned to our ethnicities at birth we have no control so why are we punished for it ?

Before you say ‘just work harder and quit whining’ , the percentage of Asian American have dramatically increased during the past half a century but the representation of Asian Americans in prestigious American schools have stayed fairly constant. So essentially we are fighting with each other for our rightful opportunities. I say to hell with that, if we are going to fight anything it should be this corrupt system.

Seeking online school for grade school due to COVID

Hi, I hope this is ok to ask here. If not, holler

Question: Does anyone have anything good to say about any online grade school options? We've only found Pearson so far, and we can't tell if it's ok, if the online education has been in place long, etc.

This would be for a third-grade who did very well in remote learning through his school. We love our local school and teachers but the Covid risk to our son is giving us cold feet about sending him back in person. We're trying to come up with a Plan B.

Background: My son will start third-grade soon. He has been remote learning through his school since March 2020, but this year is in person. The school board recently bowed to public pressure to make masks optional, despite grade school students being too young for vaccination.

My son's asthma lands him in the hospital for a few days with dangerously low oxygen levels when he catches the common cold. Covid and its delta variant would be incredibly dangerous for him.

Even if he wears a mask consistently (and teachers won't enforce this because they will be teaching, not babysitting on something optional), it won't do much since masks protect others from the wearer more than vice versa.

Thanks!

You have two options in front of you- US or UK. Which one do you choose?

My bad for the long read.

You have two options in front of you- US or UK, which one do you choose?

You’re going to study Accounting/Finance and the UK uni you got into has one of the best business schools in the world, is a target uni and a top 10 uni in the UK BUT you haven’t received any scholarship and the cost is HIGH, although you think you can bear the living expenses by yourself, there are still uncertainties. You plan on applying for summer internships/placement year and plan to use that salary to cover some of the expenses but these are uncertainties as you’re not sure if you’ll get an internship since the industry u wanna get into is extremely competitive. You wanna go to UK as you like the UK uni culture but you’re not sure if you should take such a risk with finances being dependent on getting an internship.

On the other hand, the US uni is nowhere near the UK uni, ranked only 133rd nationally but still respected as it has a unique coop program and you can also get around 1.5 yrs of work experience but the total length of your degree will be 5 YEARS. And although they have provided you financial aid, the cost is still HIGH and there are still uncertainties as the coop and thus the coop salary isn’t guaranteed since it depends on the strength of your job applications. However, you have the option to apply for a RA (Resident Assistant) job and although it’s selective, if successful it can significantly decrease your cost of attendance BUT it’s another uncertainty and you’re not sure if you should take the risk. Besides, the industry you wanna get into only targets students from Ivy League business schools and so you might be at a disadvantage when you graduate and have to settle for some other career path.

In terms of settlement, UK will provide you 2 yrs after graduation to stay and work and get sponsored while US will provide you 1 year to potentially find an employer who will sponsor you. BUT you have an active US immigration application which might get approved by the time you graduate and you don’t have to worry about leaving the US but that’s an uncertainty as well.

In such a situation, what would you do? Which option would you go for and why? Given that both options have big uncertainties in terms of finance and employment prospects, which poses a lower risk and better reward

Getting lots of propaganda from Opt Out?

I've gotten three things in the mail now from them and wondering if others have as well. Might just be an Ohio thing? I don't remember the first one (might have been about not having SROs, but I'm not sure), but the second one was about the NEA/unions pushing for there to be masks in schools next year (21-22). The one I got today was about the NEA supporting abortions- or according to the flyer "using your dues to advance abortion on demand policies".

I tried calling the number, but it just goes to some woman's (Lauren?) voice mail (I figured since it's Saturday). I'm glad no one answered because I am livid. It's such crap. In a female dominated profession, I am fine with supporting a woman's right to chose. This group also seems to have a problem with sexual identity. I'll be calling Monday to be removed.

So…COVID (a note to educational workers internationally, both teaching and non teaching)

In 5 characters you could express an entire years worth of contempt and indemnity to what we have experienced. Regardless of our borders and our roles we have all had to change our working practices to keep education going around the world.

I am writing as a member of UK support staff (non teaching) who worked and works with administrative and premises teams to keep schools open during the pandemic.

Despite the variety in our roles, the children are always at the heart of what we do, perhaps we don’t influence their grades or practices but we want good outcomes for our students nonetheless. As one who works across HR, administration, data management, scheduling, systems configuration and morale I have seen a lot of attitudes and approaches to the pandemic.

The effect on teachers has been widely publicised. The effect on support staff, not so much.

From January 2020 until late August 2020 ( when I had 1.5 weeks leave) I was on site every single day to provide advice to staff, administer remote work for students and prepare printed work for those without internet access. The role I was originally given has evolved and continues to evolve.

It is far easier to assign new work to me than it is to assign new jobs to a teacher/leader as a result of the terms and conditions that affect our roles.

Since the return of students in September 2020 I have served duty points and I have attended classroom disturbances in order to assist my institution in the absence of teaching staff as a result of the pandemic.

I have had my own personal struggles in this time, diagnosed with clinical depression in September 2020 then Major depression in June 2021 with potential psychotic indicators.

There is not an overall point I wished to make with this post, mostly emotional diatribe, however a point that could come from this is that we all should value our support teams more. Imagine a school without an office/admin team, would it run how it was supposed to? No, not a chance, leaders would step in but they would not be able to keep up with the service level demanded. Imagine a school without technicians/librarians; “students can’t go to the library at x time because staff can’t operate the equipment” or “woodwork/metalwork/technology can’t take place because the staff member in charge of the equipment is teaching another lesson”

Such are the reasons we hire support staff; such are the reasons that they should be respected.

Unable to withdraw student/child from high achieving/gifted classroom--full year commitment

Hello--I'm in Georgia (US) if it matters. My daughter is in 2nd grade and attends regular public school. She was invited to be in the gifted classroom this year, but as a general education student. She has never tested for gifted, but they marked her as high achieving and will be putting her in the gifted classroom (with other high achieving students)--but just as a general student.

This is a full-year commitment. Once she is in it--she cannot be moved to a regular classroom. I asked the principal at her school what happens if my child starts failing. Even though she was identified as high achieving...maybe she's just not full gifted material. The principal's response was essentially that my child would continue the whole year in the class, she cannot be moved, and if she fails, she fails. I found this just a bit odd--to me student achievement would/should be the highest priority. It just doesn't make sense to me they would let a child fail instead of moving them to a more appropriate classroom.

Is this normal? Is there something to this logic I'm missing? Is this common in most schools? Thanks!

The perfectly imperfect education system

I’ve spent 15 years of my life preparing for exams. Some more significant than the other, some with greater attention, some without trying. I grew up learning how to add and subtract, what is morally right, what is my civic duty to a country that has given so much for my independence. I grew up with my teachers telling me how to sit, how to stand, how to write, and why I should use formula X over formula Y even though they lead to the same answer.

I was taught about history from a book authored by a few men. I was taught about entrepreneurship, business, and marketing by professors with outstanding academic achievements and dozens of research papers published. Lecture halls where the front rows were deemed studious and the back rows lazy.

Until, one day I realized that what I learnt contrasts starkly with what is happening in the real world. I realized that, the system that taught me patriotism and unity, were using disunity and racial segregation to stay in power. I realized that, as kids, we were desensitized to subtle racism in school, and we grow up subconsciously believing that is the way of life.

I realized that there are simpler ways to solve a mathematical question, but why were we taught to take the longer route, why were we taught a specific way. I grew up thinking the stories were true, until I realized that history textbooks are just a version and a perspective of the few authors who wrote and published it. My history, my roots, stretches far deeper than the roots of the trees that made those textbooks.

I realized that my lecturers were theory smart but lacked real business experiences to equip me with the necessary knowledge to run a business. I remember sitting at the back rows of the lecture hall, people watching, some were on their phones scrolling through Instagram, playing mobile games, and some were staring into the abyss. That made me wonder, why? Why is it so?

The obvious truth is, the education system was designed in a way that would achieve a specific outcome for a specific group. We are taught to think and behave in a specific way. We are taught to graduate, get a degree and get a job. We are taught that our self-worth is based on our grades. Why were we not taught to manage our finances, how to file our taxes and gain from tax relief. We were taught to save but never about inflation.

The common goal, to keep the masses uneducated and uninformed, to keep them deprived of knowledge and skills, to program and shape their minds to follow orders, to follow the “flow of life”, and to never question the status quo. Society, after all, was made from another person’s idea of life. School is where the cat killed curiosity.

Knowledge liberates while the lack of knowledge gives one an illusion of choice and freewill. To stay in power, keep the people poor and uneducated. To start a revolution, equip the people with books.

I highly despise cheating. It only benefits you short term and has serious consequences in the future such as being lazy, inability to commit into achieving goals, and not having the right education for your future careers.

That being said, are there any unusual strategies that are used by teachers to catch cheaters and prevent them?

My old school has been replaced by a sports facility with some classrooms on the side

I know this has been discussed here before but recent events brought it home. My high school was built in the late 50s and I graduated in the late 60s - over 50 years ago. I understand that the nature of what is taught, and how it is taught, has changed in that time. And a building that old is going to have crumbling infrastructure, bad pipes, etc. It might even be unsafe.

So that town (I moved away a loong time ago) has recently decided it is time to replace the school building, as well as do upgrades on several other schools in the town. So they are building a brand new building, next door to the old one, to open for classes this fall. 2021 was the last class to graduate from the old building. Demolition started last month. What really got me fired up about this was the picture of a backhoe knocking a hole in the side of a wall and the caption read "Demolition begins on the freshman gymnasium". What, freshman have cooties so have their own gym?? We only had the one gym when I was there.

So what do they do with that land where the old building was? Put up more sports facilities of course. So now the entire plot of land contains A football stadium, with concession stands and a track around it, Ten tennis courts, A baseball diamond, A softball diamond, Two soccer fields, Parking lots.

Then inside the 400,000 square foot 'academic' building there are: a gymnasium holding three basketball courts, a separate 'varsity' basketball court with seating, and a natatorium with ten lanes (the old school had a 6 lane natatorium). Among the indoor non-athletic but "group activity" facilities are a 1500 seat auditorium (slightly small than the one in the old school) and a separate "black box theater" which I guess is popular now

The bill, including improvements to junior high and grade schools comes to about a quarter of a billion dollars. All this in a town with a population of just over 30,000 and a high school enrollment of just over 2,000. The athletic facilities are also used by the town on weekends.

I have read that having an athletic program in high school does two things: on the plus side, it increases retention: more students go on to graduate. On the negative side, it results in lower SAT scores. High schools in Europe and Asia have tiny athletic programs by comparison, and higher test scores. In Japan the schools still have marching bands but they just do not perform at football games.

I was in band too and completely understand the benefits of group activities, especially cultural ones, like a drama program. But I wonder about the priorities and the allocation of resources. Too much bread and circus and not enough becoming better citizens?

Substitute Teacher looking for advice

I have a computer engineering degree from a great school with a math minor. I have ran my own teaching business for years, but I just switched to being a sub in order to have a more consistent schedule. Any advice if I wanted to further my career or become a full time teacher from this spot? I would love to have my own students and classes but it seems like you need either an education degree or a teaching license which is hard to get in my state.

Note taking web based app

Hello, my name is John, and I am currently designing a note-taking web-based app to help students write down notes during online lectures. I'm at the stage where I have a working prototype, and I'm looking for 4-6 people to test it and so I can further improve on my design. The test will not take longer than 5-10 minutes(through zoom or similar). If you have a free moment and you're interested, send me a dm and we'll schedule a meeting, where I'll share the link with you! Cheers!

This is by far the most teaching openings I have ever seen at this point in the hiring cycle.

I seriously wonder how many schools won't be anywhere near fully staffed day one. I have kept an eye on a few states. I have been in Asia throughout the pandemic and am thinking about moving back but being in an American classroom this upcoming school year with unvaccinated Coviddeniers just seems stupid. It seems as if teaching is experiencing the same effects as nursing where people are burnt out and quitting and there's nobody to replace them. I know none of this is shocking but I really wonder what the profession looks like in a few years. They can keep lowering the bar but even that only works so much when warehouses and fastfood pay more than teaching. Will classes average 40-45 students? Will states actually be forced to raise pay, no matter what that seems like the most last ditch option for my at places? What do some of you think will change in the next five years?

History-Politics-Philosophy degree in UK?

( English isn’t my first language, forgive any mistakes ) Hello everyone! After a long time of thinking I have decided to study History at university. However I didn’t thought that was enough and after another long time of thinking I realised I am into politics. After another long time I got interested into philosophy. I did some research but I couldn’t find any university of UK ( preferably England ) that teaches all of those three at the same time. I would appreciate if you have any information!

Any interest in building a student website this summer? Here's your chance!

Hey guys, I'm a high school student and I'm about to start working on a student website project until the end of this summer. The main feature of this site is "student-to-student tutoring". It's basically a place where, when you don't understand a certain topic, you can go there and find another student who understands it well so they can explain it to you. There's a lot more to do, but that's the basic idea.

It basically a master student survival website where you have the tutoring communities and the other main thing being that We provide additional tips and tricks on like how to learn, study, revise, resources for most subjects, etc...anything regarding academic that students are just expected to already know but most don't. All these resources and tips would come from students themselves. I personally find that the tips shared on social media (by students)are usually underrated by many students but they are actually very helpful.

I'm just a normal student who has an idea. I don't know anything about building a website or any of that, but I've found out (by research) that a Web designer, developer, and content producer are needed in order to build such a website. So please, if you're a student who's interested in any of the things above, please help me make this project come to life, plus it's an opportunity for you to use the skills you've been learning in an actual project.

AND if you're a student who's passionate about how to make your academic life more enjoyable, more productive by working smarter not harder, you can help me with the research and collecting information. Maximum 5 people.

We'll first do this for high schoolers and later for college students too.

You can be a high schooler or a college student, it doesn't matter as long as you're interested.

So please message privately if you're interested in participating in this project. THANK YOU

Agree/Disagree: Education DOES NOT WORK as a tool to improve equality in society

What do you all think about this:

On the most recent episode of our podcast, Freddie deBoer argues that Education is one of the primary tools that politicians and pundits tout as a way to improve the equality of society. A look at the outcomes of education, at the widening achievement and wealth gaps, suggests that while more Americans than ever before have access to education, that education is not working to improve equality.

Agree or Disagree: Education DOES NOT WORK as a tool to improve equality in society; instead, it reinforces the class system as it already exists.

Do you agree or disagree with this argument? Is improving societal equality even a legitimate purpose of education? What is education supposed to do for society?

Would love to hear people's thoughts! We post a more in-depth topic explanation on r/LearningMachine - please check it out if you want to learn more about the podcast, I want to be careful not to be spamming/self promoting, but we would love to hear folks' opinion on this topic.

Don’t Make a Sunk Cost Error When it Comes to Your Child’s Education

You are paying an extreme amount in taxes to live in a town with “good schools.” You clearly care about your child’s future, but given how the world is changing, is school really the best place for her? Have you ever even asked the question?

Do you want your child to go to school into adulthood then get a 40 hour per week job and not have the time and resources to have and raise children? Or would you rather he start businesses and develop income streams early, have and raise children early, then reach new heights in business or career as his children mature?

Have you ever even considered the possibility that young adults are capable of starting businesses and developing income streams and could learn in the context of such endeavors? One, for example, could make and sell chocolate. This would teach her about investment, profit and loss, quality control and other important concepts she would otherwise wait until college to think about. One could start a debate league and get early practice in the skills of persuasion and conflict resolution, while gaining the rare ability to organize activities with peers. The possibilities are limitless.

Children are naturally motivated to learn and achieve and learning and achieving is easier today than ever before. Your child can audit any MIT class for free. Does it make sense to spend years and thousands of dollars and lost opportunities for a piece of paper which no one will bother to look at? Whom do you think would impress an potential employer or business partner more, a person who went into debt to earn an MIT degree by 22, or one who got the best of the same material for free by 18? And which of the two would this potential employer or business partner suspect has more to unlearn?

Maybe you believe that there is a social value to school, that it is good for your child to be locked in a building with an entire neighborhood of children of all ages. If you want to keep your child from being mistreated or abused, it is best to keep her out of school. A single incident of abuse can derail a lifetime of dreams and aspirations.

You will never recover the money you’ve already spent in taxes to support the school system, but continuing to believe it is an investment in your child’s education and development will only compound the loss.

Harrier Education Young Adult Business Program will start as a summer course for children 7-12 then go year round a couple years later.

Am I going about starting a career in education naively?

Hi all! I am a 27 year old female who is considering making a pivot into elementary education following several years of working in large hospitals as a CNA (pediatrics, adult ICU, and NICU). Forgive my ignorance as I’m still trying to navigate this all, but any guidance or insights would be so greatly appreciated!

I’m hoping this isn’t too unrealistic: I live in the greater Boston area and was recently accepted to an Elementary Education program to complete my bachelor’s degree. 70 of my credits transferred, and I am budgeting for an estimated 18 months unto matriculation.

In the meantime, I am currently looking for paraeducator and teacher aide jobs. My plan is to work in that role until I graduate and can hopefully procure a teaching position while working on my graduate degree.

Is that terribly unrealistic or naive? Any thoughts or advice would be so appreciated!

Thoughts On Children Repeating Grade For Social Reasons?

A parent came to me with a dilemma about what grade to enroll her child into this coming school year. Our public school district is giving parents the option of repeating last year due to the inconsistent learning that happened because of Covid or continuing on to the next grade. This child went to a Montessori school for grades K-4 and was homeschooled for grade 5 due to Covid. The child is a very smart but very shy and moving into our district without any friends or relationships. Her concern is the child may lose interest if the material is too easy. However, she thinks a year of public elementary school might set her up to succeed better than just dropping her into a middle school setting after coming from such a different learning style montessori/home school environment before. I am leaving towards recommending the additional year of 5th grade since I don’t see graduating public school as a race and it won’t matter if she’s a year older than most of the other students (especially with potential other Covid year repeats). Those middle school years are tough and I think a year of making friends and reinforcing what she already learned can’t be a bad thing. I was hoping for some additional thoughts/advice from you guys (especially since our guidance counselors are basically MIA unfortunately). Thanks for your thoughts!

Opaque and/or arbitrary moderating

So I just had a post about a program's recent results "withdrawn" by the moderators - no reason given. The generic statement was it was because the mods want to keep the forum safe, civil and true to the sub's goals. Questioning the results is safe and civil, and the post was "meaningful, reflective, and thought-provoking discourse about educational policy, research, technology, and politics."

So what can and can't be posted?

Should psychometrics be used in education?

Often times companies pay good money for psychometric consultants in things like Clifton Strengths, Big 5, MBTI and DISC to maximize people’s effectiveness based on their natural inclinations.

Since standardization is the most common gripe with our education system, wouldn’t customization be the answer?

What if the school system took metrics of children’s natural strengths and inclinations and then customized their education? Wouldn’t that engage their interest and confidence and lead to a higher likelihood of achieving mastery in a field they are passionate about later in life?

Are there any precedents to this?

Teacher Turned Literacy Coach?

Hey all,

I'm an Elementary teacher. I finished up my eighth year in June. Since March, I've been seeking other career avenues. I want to remain in education, but I want to transition out of the classroom. I've been getting interviews with museums, ed-tech companies, etc. The latest opportunity that I'm most excited about is a Literacy Coach in a nearby city.

Are there any Literacy Coaches on here who wouldn't mind me DMing them to talk about the role? Thanks! Hope everyone is having a restful summer.

Is it better to study something specific or something broader? for example Audio engineering VS Media Arts

I gotta decide for a uni to enroll in and im torn between Audio Engineering, or Media arts which also involves Audio Engineering as well as some film, design and animation stuff..

Im wondering tho, Media arts with main subject Audio and 2 Semesters with a LITTLE Film, Animation and Design stuff... does it actually increase job chances to the point where it would be worth taking over Audio engineering?

What i mean is, i dont think just 2 semesters of having a LITTLE film, design etc. stuff wont enable me to take jobs in that field especially vs people that do that stuff fulltime right?

Does a specified course make more sense? or a broader one....

sorry for my english btw, im not native

Currently preparing a presentation on the benefits of pursuing a college education for incoming high school students and I'm wondering if anyone has some unconventional thoughts/experiences that you believe are reasons to go to college or benefits from attending college.

We tell kids to go to college because it gives them better job prospects, they'll make more money, etc. but between the increasingly difficult job market and the rising costs of education it sometimes feels like a tough sell. Any ideas?

Like each chapter would start with a real world problem that could only be solved using the math you learn in that chapter? I think this would help kids care about what they're learning.

Question: School vs following a dream for a specific career?

My introduction: I'm not sure the best way to word this. Unemployed, disabled, I'm 24 years old, failed school (GCSE), I only got a C in important topics, which is the highest for that level, because there's two tiers I think. There's foundation and another one I forgot the name of. I think mine was foundation, the highest grade to get there is C. I also have learning difficulties and autism. I dropped out of college too. My dream from as young as eight years old was to be a games tester, and a professional gamer. In my spare time, I tried to that the best I could to achieve that dream. With some other dreams too. One being able to draw art, and later on, to write music and write fictional stories (During college). Goes without saying, I never achieved a dream, but I still follow it.

Question: I was wondering what, if any, is the success rate of educating children on the career path/s they want to follow vs the standard school education of key topics like english, math, science, IT, P.E., sometimes history and religion.

Let's say a child follows their dream of becoming a digital artist and there's a school specifically for this, where likeminded children follow that dream, and are taught everything about art for however long it takes, in the hopes of getting an early career in art. How effective is this? What are the pros and cons?

And likewise, effectiveness of a normal education system as described as above.

I'm interested to know. I kinda hated school as a kid, mainly for bullying and how hard some topics were to understand. Is school even necessary? I also kinda feel like because western societies tend to have better access to technology, it's also taken for granted in some cases. I didn't need school looking back on it, I could have learnt everything at home in my own time, I learnt grammar and english through multiplayer games. Science through YouTube, IT I just naturally know from having a computer and having the internet. A lot of other topics tie into the internet.

90 minute class periods are a terrible idea

Beginning this fall, my school (gr 6-8) is going to a schedule with 90 minute periods. Not a single colleague with whom I've spoken thinks this is a good idea. In college, maybe. In middle school? Not so much. We keep hearing from administration that "research shows" this is best practice, but I have yet to see anything convincing. How does such a long stretch of time in one class have advantages that outweigh the obvious disadvantages? Administration is sold on this; it's a done deal regardless of what the teachers in the trench have to say about it, so best just to shut up and deal... but how?

The decline in formal and semi formal public writing

Though I was once a vocational-industrial arts teacher, and have a mild form of dyslexia, my writing style has sometimes been said to be too formal. I think this comes from my elementary school years of reading/writing remediation. Presently, I find that a more informal conversational writing style has taken over public discourse. While the word "like" does not pepper every written sentence, as commonly found in speaking, the word "so" and heavy use of contractions do appear. I would like to hear from those who are language teachers. Are students being taught to write in different levels of formality?

I took people's advice making an educational video about public policy. I am framing it as "survival civics" and the ideal citizen education if democracy wasn't so messed up. My hope is to spread practical ideas and tools that work for reform but also for rebuilding after collapse.

I am hoping others see things similarly? I think I'm being constructively cynical, as opposed to so cynical I shut down and just languish.

For the video I chose a Policy Window to describe the phenomenon of news stories that ignite discussion in broad society that often fail to result in change.

Whether it's global warming and weather disasters, or school shootings and gun control, or underfunded building services like in Miami, policy windows are an opportunity when things line up for change to happen.

But they often fail to line up where the leaders at the top of the pyramid change course or make different kinds of decisions. This headline from The New York Times is a prime example why.

I think we need a real revolution and innovation in how we teach people about civics in a way that sidesteps and even reconciles a very tortured political rung of discourse. I try to do so by deconstructing and framing everything in terms of group problem-solving and outcomes.

If we want society to get better, eventually it boils down to organizing leadership and priorities, and how those get elevated and chosen is very reliant on a very flawed public understanding of politics. Because of the last 100 years in public education, journalism, and political gamesmanship, we're at a place where nearly every democracy, certainly in North America (can't speak for elsewhere) is failing at addressing systemic issues.

Even infrastructure is a partisan morass, never mind climate change. But it's all part of a democratic ecosystem where people are choosing who leads based on what they think is going on and what to do about it. If those components are each broken (as citizens, media, and political parties each are) then the ability of a democracy to effectively problem-solve is stunted and outcomes and real life impacts reflect that.

Essentially, if we want better leaders, we need better voters.

And this has to happen. Because if fair-minded and reasonable people skilled with history and a passion for providing better for others don't, others will. QAnon will.

If you're interested in the video, it's here.

Otherwise, I am looking for support in principle and always open to ideas about democratic renewal and innovation.

I'm looking for suggestions and recommendations for books that focus on grammar, writing, spelling, and basic reading for elementary school students, especially K-3rd grade.
I would like to find some that are fun and engaging for kids while also being well organized. I'm particularly interested in American English but am open to British English as well. Bonus points if the texts have teaching guides with them but not strictly necessary.
I'd also love to hear what books you would recommend avoiding.

Looking for feedback on Educational content on Astronautical Engineering

Hey, I was wondering if you could share some feedback on this video on Astronautical Engineering. Since I am just a high school student, any feedback on general explanation or the specific of the topic itself will be appreciated.
