Greetings! So I fumbled my way onto the board of a private IB school outside the United States. I am very excited about the opportunity, but am equally intimidated over the responsibility entrusted in me. My only educational experience is as a student in U.S. public schools and state university. During grad school I 'taught' one section of PolySci 101l. That experience was disastrous enough to know that teaching was not for me (and I apologize to the 75 or so students who suffered through the course with me).
Years later, I have kids of my own and I am committed to making their school the best place it can be. Can you all recommend books or web sites that will help me get quickly up to speed on educational best practices from the 30,000 foot perspective. I am not looking for teaching techniques (since that's way too in the weeds for a School Board member). I am looking more for broad-stroke strategies for fostering a caring learning environment for educating forward-thinking good citizens of the next generation.
