First off I teach pre-k in the us. So this morning a kid had an absolute meltdown when she saw into the classroom. We found out it was because she saw this one boy was here who had been bullying her. It got so bad that we literally had to pry her fingers away from the door jam. After we calmed her down I moved her away from him and dealt with it and later discovered that he has been bothering her every single day doing a lot of stuff behind our back etc. you know the story. (We noticed a bit of it a few weeks ago and had a conversation with him and his father so I know it’s been going on at least that long). Obviously the girl’s father was very upset so after he left I called my admin down so I could tell her what was going on. She acted like she was wondering why the f I was bothering her with it. She just told me to move him away from her and then told me “you can’t call it bullying at this age, they are too young to bully someone else”. I’m like look I’m just letting you know so that when he comes back yelling later you aren’t blindsided. How should I handle this? Am I wrong is this really NOT bullying? And I’ve tried talking to him several times about how he treats his friends so I don’t know what else to do.
In addition (didn’t want to make two posts right back to back) we have 3 kids with pretty extreme adhd and I’ve been trying lots of things to try and help. I tried the “wiggle square” (square on the floor you can stand in as long as you pay attention). A token economy with stickers for if you did well in a part of the day, and a reward system in which if they behaved for the first part of the day then at nap time you can have your toy. I was told “you can’t do token economies in pre-k it’s unethical” and “you are setting them up for failure by giving them these rewards because when they get to kindergarten they won’t get these accommodations they don’t do that in kindergarten” I’m like….excuse me? You DONT want me to try and accommodate children with disabilities gotcha…. So what can I do for these babies without these “reward based” systems?
