What I learned in AP US History compared to friends in normal US history is sad. I only took three APs, the other two being European History and Psychology. They all contained material EVERYONE should know to be a responsible citizen and voter. I don’t know what I missed out on in other AP classes, but I am now in college as a psychology major.
The point is, the material in AP courses and college general education classes should be a requirement for ALL Americans. It should be high school level. I believe our education system is too focused on fulfilling requirements on not on actual learning. Most students find AP harder because we expect it to be, if it is the standard, it will feel normal. I honestly found AP easier because it was more studying, less boring busy work. The courses could be pass/fail and the AP exam scores could be used to rate students for college admissions if they choose to go.
Our society is still rife with human rights abuses. If everyone had an AP level of understanding in history, psychology, and biology, I think we’d live in a very different world.
