Teaching; calling or lesser of evils?

Is teaching a "calling" for you, or simply the "lesser" evil of all jobs?

Hi there! I was speaking to a recent colleague of mine who decided that they were burnt out by their previous job and wanted a career change. I casually mentioned I was one foot in, one foot out of being a teacher myself and we suddenly started to get encapsulated in that rabbit-hole of professions.

I'm also not particularly sure myself if this is the right path to enter for me, but for the sake of my colleague, I did promise them I would make a post about it on reddit and let them read the answers! They do not have an account for clarification.

Specifically, we hampered around these topics:

  • how society treats teachers; underrated, underappreciated profession
  • lifestyle of being a teacher; waking up early, long hours, nightly grading
  • if teachers actually like teaching themselves, ie. a "calling" or if it's more of a "lesser" of all jobs ordeal
  • teaching in comparison to other educational routes; social workers, psychiatrists, counselors, etc.
  • regret; is there more to life then being a teacher, and would we regret not pursuing something different when we had the chance
  • bureaucracy, red-tape, admin

We had other concerns, but primarily our conversation centered around on these topics. I'm not even particularly sure how to answer, so I thought I would post it here.

Thanks for all you do as educators. We are so looking forward to your reply!
