I go to one of the top public universities in the U.S. There is a person at my university that skipped high school completely and went to my university younger than the age of 14. This information is publicly available, but I do not know this person personally and don't want to dox them, but I'm sure you've seen some people like this on the news, normally labeled "child prodigies."
How does someone do this legally, and if a middle schooler, at the age of 11 wanted to do this, what could they do to make this happen?
My understanding of what happens is that normally, someone at the university, probably a renowned professor or faculty, becomes impressed with the child. They then push the university to accept the student to college early. My guess is a child like this never gets their high school diploma and gets all their high school college prerequisites waived. Perhaps they might go back later and get their GED but it's worthless since they already have a college degree. Does that sound right? Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm genuinely curious how the process works.
I believe a lot of the students in the AP classes at my high school were intelligent enough to graduate at least 1-2 years early if they were given the chance, but none of us were offered this lol. How does something like this even happen?
