Greetings fellow educators!
I am a former SecEd teacher currently working overseas at a school in an Asian country. One of my students will be moving to the US next summer and going into the 8th grade, so I'd like to get her caught up in English as I feel once that's down, the other skills from other subjects should come easier. She is fairly high level, not quite native, but shouldn't struggle too much. The main concern I have is the difference in experience in regards to English class and writing/reading terms.
Basically, I would appreciate it if teachers could advise me as to what knowledge or skills she needs to be ready for 8th grade English. It's been over 10 years since I last taught in the States, but if I recall, the main goals were focused on different types of writing? Are there any terms or themes she should know like heroes journey or dystopias? I know it depends on the school and district and what not, but I'd like to get a general feel.
Thanks a bunches!
