Why are parents discouraged from filing assault charges if a student commits an act that meets the legal definition of assault?
So many kids are committing suicide for bullying related issues. It seems that schools are hamstrung and I cannot tell if it's due to policies that the general public isn't aware of, or more political/cultural (like "boys will be boys" attitudes about behavior bordering on sexual harassment, telling parents not to report a kid because he will lose his scholarship money for being an athlete, etc.)
I just don't get why schools have ongoing bullying issues when parents could just call the police, file formal charges against the child, ultimately drop them if needed. Records are sealed or expunged once you're 18 so why doesn't this happen more?
