How, and why, does the brain relate information?

Full disclosure, I'm a complete noob when it comes to education. If the answer to my question seems obvious, I'm sorry, but I didn't know where else to ask.

I've been watching videos in regard to "higher order learning" recently, and a central part seems to be relating ideas or "units" of knowledge with each other. I have two questions.

1. What classes of relation does our mind form? Some obvious ones seem to be categorization, and cause and effect, but it'd be great if someone could give me a rundown, so I can make sure I'm not missing any important ones.
2. How are these forms of relations benefitial to us?
