An r/Teachers poster pointed out that middle and HS students just don't seem to care anymore. They don't dress to impress. They don't do their work. And, they get VERY touchy if you expect them to get off their cell phone/music source. Could it be a form of PTSD?
Here is what they may see or experience at school each day (on top of what they experience at home and in the community):
- Sexual harassment
- Bullying
- Weapons - or the constant fear of weapons
- Lockdowns
- Teachers who cannot control the room (so how are they safe?)
- Disabled students who legally need more support, but aren't getting what they need - and if the most vulnerable can't get what they need, then how does anyone?
- Constant noise, chaos, and stink
- Crumbling infrastructure
- Teachers (some) who have given up, and others who are spitting into the wind
- An obvious lack of administrative support for the teacher who is supposed to be getting them ready for the future
- Possibly no recognizable future thanks to climate change
- LGBTQ students who are not allowed to deviate from imposed religious norms - even though we pride ourselves on religious freedom
How can we expect them to buy into a mandatory system that is so hypocritical and unsafe?
