Is there some standard curriculum that most elite schools follow, and if so what is it?

From watching TV shows about royalty, or just listening to academics and public intellectuals speak, it seems there are some fundamentals most of them were taught. Most are somewhat familiar with famous philosophers like Socrates or Kant. They have some knowledge of the Roman Empire, can recite some Shakespeare and have probably read important books like Catcher In The Rye or 1984.

Mind I am not saying ALL will know that. I am saying it seems like most intellectuals and high class socialites (at least those that listened in class) seem educated in approximately the same subjects me and most of who I know never heard about in school (not American).

Does the elite put a different emphasis on what their kids learn when they go to school? Does high end education contain some "fundamentals" like certain ideas of philosophy?
