My sister has some learning disabilities such as dyslexia and in general she has a “slow” thinking skills so she has a really hard time understanding and memorizing things.
For instance, she will be 14 years old this year and even right now when someone asks her what’s the number of her birthday month is (and it being December so the 12th) her first initial response would be “It’s winter”. And only after several minutes and hints she will fully understand the question and remember the right answer. Or if you ask her how many months are there in a year it would take her a very long time and a lot of tries to respond to the question correctly and after being retaught that several times she still doesn’t remember it well enough.
However, with this in mind she has also managed to learn English fluently (as it’s her second language) and at times she grasps information pretty well.
My worry is that currently she is studying in a British online school as it is more convenient and easier for her, however, starting next year she will be starting her GCSEs and the British GCSE program that lasts two years is pretty hard and complicated due to the amount of content you need to know for the end of the two year exams. The program expects you to do a lot of independent study to understand how to answer exam questions and you have to memorize a LOT of content and my sister will just not be able to do that. My parents were planning to sending her off to some college after grade 9/10 so she would at least get some kind of education but I worry that she won’t even be able to graduate from middle school if she takes this hard program. Could anyone recommend what to do? Perhaps you know someone who has been through a similar thing or know any programs that are more suitable and are a little bit easier. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
