High school pulled my older child from class to question them about younger siblings health issues

My oldest is a high school junior. Their sibling is a freshman. My freshman has several health issues, one of which is a bowel disorder. This has caused the freshman to miss school for a class period occasionally to shower and change, as well as all of this week because of a medical procedure. We have very openly communicated these health issues with the school since before the year started. The freshman principal, classroom teachers, the support team, counselors office, attendance, nurse, front desk staff- we have discussed this with all of them on a regular basis. We are still having trouble getting work for freshman to do while out of the building and some teachers have yet to respond to emails from last week but continue to give zeros for missed work. There is an IEP in place and part of freshman's plan outlines bathroom stuff. We found out tonight that the principal has pulled the junior aside multiple times this week and last to question freshman's health issues and attendance, asking why freshman is missing so much for bowels and what they are doing while at home. Principal also discussed freshman's grades with junior and told junior that freshman probably can't come back academically from missing all of this week. I am at a loss as to what else we can do to prove the seriousness of freshman's health problems. If what we are doing this week and over the weekend doesn't work, freshman could end up hospitalized again and that has been shared with the school. This isn't just a kid wanting to avoid school. It's an ongoing, serious medical problem. I'm also very angry that the principal put junior in the position to explain and defend health issues that are very well documented and discussed with staff. It seems extremely inappropriate and a violation of privacy to go into details about grades and health problems with an older sibling. Is that something all districts do or are we just unlucky?

Benefits of having special needs schools?

I keep reading negative reports about special needs schools and claims that all children with disabilities should be in a mainstream school. I'm a speech therapist and work with children with complex needs and honestly struggle to understand how this idea could play out practically without disadvantaging the very children that are supposedly going to be 'benefit' from being 'included' in mainstream. Would appreciate thoughts on this.

Has anybody ever been successful that were considered neurologically impaired as a child?

I looked up some tests of mine based on intelligence. It said I was neurologically impaired. It also said I had ADHD and that all my teachers including counselors stated I would easily get distracted. They asked me why I didn't pay attention as a child and my response was I got bored after a while. So with this they deemed me neurologically impaired. If I were neurologically impaired would I have even been able to become a nurse or even get my bachelor's on my own? I'm assuming this was all based on me just not caring about my school work and not being neurologically impaired. I'm curious on others' takes. Thank you!

Do you have any favorite resources for conservation of momentum?

Hello! I made an introductory resource for AP physics students learning classical mechanics, motion, and collisions (Perfectly Elastic, Inelastic Collisions, Partially Elastic). I'm looking though for some additional resources that I can give students as they revise for this topic.

Do you have any tried and tested resources that could complement my lecture? Bonus points if they're fun for students!

Let's become a lifelong learner

The first thing that anyone thinks of at the mention of Learning is one, we are done with it, is it not for people who are still getting educated? And two, Learning has always been such a heavy task, why would anyone want to do it ‘Lifelong’?

Trust us, we understand your plight, but what we mean to tell you is going to break these preconceptions about Learning and introduce you to what Lifelong Learning means.

Let's clear the air first, learning is not restricted to education. We often equate learning with the idea of pursuing a degree or a formal course, but learning can be both formal and informal, hence helping you in various sectors of your life both personally and professionally.

When we speak of Lifelong Learning, yes the name absolutely suggests what it means - learning constantly, growing, progressing in a continuum. But it doesn’t have to be seen as one of those monotonous education structures. Lifelong Learning can actually be an interesting, engaging & interactive form of learning - focused at its core to help you achieve productivity, efficiency & progress!

There are two major things that necessitate the concept of Lifelong Learning in today’s day and age. One, the world around us is constantly evolving and one needs to pace up, professionally and personally to prosper and fit in! As a Lifelong learner you get to chase individual passion & interests for his or her own development with or without incentives but guaranteed joy and personal satisfaction.

The best part is, the results of this in the long-term can be achieved both formally and informally. Given the resources that are available today you can learn in plenty of ways. From a podcast, to an ebook or article, while traveling to work or on a vacation, your learning never stops! So if you are curious about why learning should be lifelong, then that is your answer!

The second more important thing: Lifelong learning recognizes & channelizes that humans have an innate tendency & drive to explore, learn and grow and it thereby encourages you, the learners to improve your own quality of life and sense of self-worth by paying attention to the ideas and goals that inspire you. Zuperly on a mission to onboard 100 million lifelong learners like you, and empower your efficient, productive learning processes with a toolkit of resources that have everything you need to Learn- better & smarter.

I got 9/40 even after I studied and answered questions right. I am aware my handwriting is bad but it’s understandable and I feel like my teacher took it a little too far.

I have had trembling/shaky hands ever since 5th grade and I have tried multiple times to fix my handwriting but my teacher force us to write the notes fast and it’s messy again. Before my teacher did say I should fix my handwriting even after I tell them my hands tremble and it’s hard to hold back tremble while writing I still get all the marks that I answered correctly. However this time this new teacher gave me 9/40 even after I answered at least 25 marks worth of questions, this was the first time I gave it all the hard work and was let down by this stupid reason. Pls help I am scared already have enough issues to deal with. And if I told my parents and even after explaining them why it’s hard for me to have good handwriting they still yell at me.

Online colleges that accept international students?

Hey guys!

I've been researching online a ton and i'm trying so hard to find a online university/college that will accept international students. I live in Denmark and there's no online colleges here (none that are fully online). Due to my current time in life, i can't go to a regular college/uni.

I found WGU and was so excited to enroll only to find out, international students are not allowed. I've been disappointed again and again like this. The ones that accept us are way to expensive.

Then i found Athabasca University in canada and their tuition isn't that bad at all. They have the major i want (Bachelor of Science – Computing and Information Systems Major). But they have some bad reviews (among many positive ones) saying that the professors are hard to reach which of course isn't very good.

So if you guys know of good online colleges/uni that accept international students that don't cost a crazy amount then please write them down below. thank you! And i want to major in IT.

Thanks a ton!

//Maria

p.s. i graduated from an American online high school

Currently I am conducting a survey regarding opinions on the mandatory inclusion of LGBTQIA+ content and texts in the ELA curriculum and I am hoping I can find some current school administrators (any administration position) who would be willing to respond to my survey? No personal information will be collected, including names or email addresses. This survey is strictly voluntary and is intended only for respondents who are 18+ and who currently hold administration positions. The survey should take roughly 5 minutes to complete.

Here is the link to the survey https://forms.gle/aDEXceuRaTVGurah6

If anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me, my email address is included in the header of the survey.

Thank you for your help!

An exchange with enough trading volume!

If you plan to buy, sell, or trade your crypto, the exchange you choose should have enough trading volume to ensure your holdings are relatively liquid, meaning you can sell them when you want. Again, this can be an instance where size matters. Often, the more popular exchanges are also those with the largest trade volumes.

There are so many people that use so many exchanges out there. But I just found myself a great solution to trade cryptocurrencies. for many months, I have been on the lookout for a fast, safe yet secure way to do that but couldn't find anything good. Until now because with the Exchange of EXPX it's going so smooth and easy in a secure way at the same time!

Why do I recommend it? Because it looks and feels smooth and it's fast and secure. The perfect combination for me to trade my crypto!

History Teacher refuses to give 100s?

Hello! I’m a freshman in college and my history teacher has proven to be a real pain for my grades. None of her assignments give the option for a 100. The highest anyone has scored in her class on any assignment is a 97 and that was for participation. The highest score on our Essay was an 89. How do you deal with a teacher like this? Obviously if the highest score was an 89, she was grading outside of her rubric. And a 97 high for participation?? Maybe it’s a college thing but I personally don’t think it’s right that a teacher doesn’t give 100s because “nobody is perfect” type of mindset. If I completed the assignment as the instructions said I believe it deserves a 100.

Unstructured vs. structured learning?

I'm new to this sub, and for my first post I'd love to see what everyone thinks about structured learning versus unstructured learning. As I understand it, structured learning proceeds according to a set of objectives/goals, while unstructured learning simply does not have such formal structures. Articles such as this one claim that unstructured learning is the "future," but is that convincing? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Advice on Graduate Program

Hello all, not sure if this works here but figured I would give it a shot. If you think it should be someplace else please let me know.

So I have been wanting to pursue a masters degree for some time. When I was an undergraduate I remember thinking about getting a graduate degree but at that point I was working on two bachelors degrees and was ready to be done with school.

Since my graduation, 2.5 years ago, I have kept thinking about wanting to continue my education partly for me and partly because it has been my experience that potential employers don’t really seem to care about my bachelors degrees. So I am looking to improve myself.

I did start an online masters in chemistry earlier this year but quickly realized it was not really something I wanted to do at all. Now I am looking at in person graduate schools because I need that support and sense of community and belonging.

My struggle, and the reason I reach out now, is that I really don’t know how to decide which program to choose because my interests are so varied. I want something I enjoy but that also has real world value; those don’t always align. What method(s) would you use to determine what is the best direction for a graduate degree(s)? Any help is much appreciated.

P.S. I have a BS in chemistry and a BS in education if that helps.

Quizzes only on sunday

My teacher from an online business class was supposed to be with us on zoom twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He decided we are going to meet on zoom only on tuesdays cause he does want to look at a blank screen for an hour, so he is going to limit it to only Tuesdays. We have DB homework and stuff, but the problem is that he decided that our weekly quizzes will be ONLY on Sundays. Is that even legal? We took this class to work on it on Tuesday and thursday, shouldn't we have the quiz then on thursday or Tuesday? In person you only have quizzes on the day of class, not sundays... I keep missing it because obviously, I am busy and enjoy my day off....

Was school a waste of time?

In the age of rapidly changing technologies and highly specified skill sets, it seems like the current education model in the United States is overly dated and inefficient. The time for developing professional skills needs to be spent during the traditional secondary education period.

Do you agree?

I left college and now I want to Die. Can I go back?

Ever since my first month in an expensive state university, I was suffering from undiagnosed PTSD from my homelife before. I didn't have a car, money, or a very strong mental state. I worked really hard to get into college, and I worked hard in college for two years but after that, I fell into a deep depression because most of the "friends" I made only used me, and once the year ended, they all moved away and left me homeless. A few even offered to have me as a roommate only to pull the rug out from under me at the last minute just before school got out and announce they gave the room to someone else. I got along OK until a sports sedan hit my bike right off-campus. The frame broke in half, and I lived literally on the other side of town. to make things worse my theatre job started only putting me on for like 2 days a month, so I wasn't making any money at all. This is when the mood swings began, and once I got hurled out of my writing class by the jr. dean of admissions, I decided I wasn't going to finish school. NOTHING about college was fun. I hated every single day of it, and anyone who says they enjoyed it are very deranged people. Since leaving college, I don't miss any part of it. I have regrets, like majoring in English (big fucking mistake) but my misery went out the door and I immediately wrote 3 books, lived in a boarding house with a veteran, a travelling massage therapist, and an entomologist. However, it's been about five or six years now, I'm still writing, but my life sucks. I can't find a decent job. I never have enough money. I still don't have a car. I didn't have a smartphone until 2018. All the opportunities are factory, warehouse, fast food. I fucking hate it. My grades went to the shitter in the last few years too, so I doubt I can get back into school to study anything I'm interested in so I can actually get a decent job, move to a cool town, and have a good life. right now I'm surrounded by either old people or 13-year-olds in a meth stricken town that peaked in the 1860s. Most of the people my age are either crackheads or methheads. I hate it, and think I *should* be able to get back into school someday but idk. I fear I'm getting too old, and I really wouldn't know how to start. Everyone else my age has their happy little family, moved to a cool place, and has a job that pays them enough to make their wishes come true. I choose to pursue what I loved, and frankly, it brought me nothing but anguish from my loved ones. Oh yes, there is student loan debt. Knowing what I know now, I would never have even gone to college. You either need to have lots of money, want to be something like an engineer more than anything else in the world, or both. I just wanted to learn to write books. Apparently, that's enough to make me the scum of the earth. Meanwhile, they hand out degrees to people who never read a book in their lives. Can I go back? how? Would it even be worth it? Or should I just keep writing until I either make money or kill myself? Thanks.

Terrifying Consequences & Terrific Costs of the so-called 'War On Terror': Eight Trillion Dollars Sadistically Squandered and Nearly One Million Victims of Institutionalized Violence

As part of this so-called "War on Terror", which has wrought many times more terror than the initial attack ever came close to as highlighted by the terrifying level of institutionalized violence towards our fellow humans, nearly a million of us lost our life via violence directly related to the US military involvement (including the invasions and occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq in addition to all of the military operations carried out in over 80 different countries) which doesn't even account for all of the myriad consequences that emerge from misallocating 8 trillion dollars, or the ecological devastation done by the US military which is the single largest polluter of petroleum in the world, or the pernicious psychological repercussions from the fallout of all the trauma that results from the terror of war which permeates societies for generations like a cultural virus. As evidence of the psycho-social aftermath, many times more people that live in the region of our planet that we currently refer to as the United States and were involved in the war died deaths of despair than did dying in combat, just as was the case in Vietnam, which doesn't even touch on the widespread PTSD and other mental health problems ensuing from the terrorizing effects of being immersed in let alone actively involved in the terror of war, the atrocity of our inhumanity towards one another. "War is hell" after all, and the history of war is a poignant reminder that the road to hell is paved with good intentions (albeit uninformed, misinformed, unreasonable, irrational, or some combination thereof, in other words fundamentally misguided), reminding us of the value of virtue in general and the importance of situating wisdom in particular at the center of all of our decision-making, the foundation of all that we do. Considering that war is borne in the minds of men, our efforts are rendered most effective by focusing on fostering the conditions conducive to us growing up and moving beyond the childish ways of war which entails developing understanding, of the folly of war in particular, and more generally the utter foolishness of letting fear dictate our behavior and use us as devices of violence and avarice, as instruments of inhumanity. To the extent to which we cower and conform to the dictates of fear, we are acting as conduits of suffering, for all suffering not transformed is suffering transmitted. The results of fear running rampant is the ravaging of our minds and bodies, and the consequences of institutionalizing fear in the form of the international military-industrial complex is state-sanctioned sadism that leaves much of the world shrouded in the savagery of war. This is dishearteningly exemplified by the nearly one million of our fellow human beings who were denied the right to live, deprived of the ability to continue living, many of whom were bystanders or civilians wanting no part in this war and yet nonetheless were victimized by a war of wanton violence and reckless disregard for the sanctity of human life, let alone life in general.

So aside from the obvious question begged by all of this atrocity - namely, how do we best help one another learn to be less reactionary, vengeful, short-sighted, and nationalistic (or to take a more positive approach which is the more effective method, how do we bring the best out of one another and help each other bring as much joy to the journey for all as we can) in our thinking and feeling, our perspective and sentiment, our worldview and ethos, our way of being and relating - the question remains as to how many lives could have been saved if that eight trillion dollars was allocated towards whatever humanitarian causes would yield the greatest return of investment in terms of lives saved (even though ultimately I think we are infinitely better off focusing on quality of life over quantity, but that's another story). So for the sake of adding to our understanding of the total cost of the military-industrial complex's misguided endeavors, let us consider the trade-offs made by choosing to prioritize all of our resources for such an ill-advised and ill-fated approach as beginning from a place of fear and othering (us and them) leading to xenophobia and antagonism (us vs them) and mistakenly trying to terminate (resorting to physical violence rather than wisely seeking to transform) the perpetrators and purveyors of problematic patterns of behavior. Lastly, let us consider the strategy of coming from a place of common humanity wherein we predicate all we do on understanding the fundamental processes at play and proceed in a way consonant with the causal forces in play (which ultimately is the universal will to be well that permeates every permutation) so that we may cultivate the conditions intra- and inter- personally that are optimally conducive to the well-being of all.

The answer to this question of how many lives could have been saved if we used the money for humanitarian purposes (instead of enacting and perpetuating a war spanning over twenty years and embroiling over eighty countries, costing eight trillion dollars and counting, with a death toll approaching one million of our fellow humans who died a violent death and continue to fall to this fate, falling victim to man's inhumanity to man) is 3,478,260,870. That is almost 3 and a half billion lives. Pretty sure that is way more people than the total number that have died from so-called preventable causes in that timeframe. Another way to look at it, in terms of life-years saved, is that we could have given ourselves an additional 266,666,667,000 years of life to enjoy, that is nearly 267 billion years that we would have lived instead of having allowed to perish all those of us that died prematurely (in that it could have been prevented). Yet another metric of the misguidedness of this war of terror is that we could have given the gift of vision to 160,000,000,000 people unable to see adequately or at all (people who are experiencing blindness). Obviously all of these figures surpass the actual number of humans that are in need of such humanitarian assistance in each instance. It seems we could reasonably surmise that every single humanitarian crisis, and potentially every humanitarian cause in general, that plagues humankind and our planet, could have been resolved if we allocated our resources responsibly, in accordance with our values.

Acting in accordance with our values, walking the talk, so to speak, in terms of how we allocate our resources (attention and intention and all the means thereof), will give way to a world that works for all wherein we all come together in beloved community ensuring everyone has an equitable opportunity to lead healthy and happy lives, by lovingly and communally ensuring everyone's basic needs are met (clean air and water, holistically healthy food, adequate refuge, and above all, on the whole, love), affirming that we're all in this together and that we're way better off having one another's back, orienting around the ethos of one for all and all for one, remembering that this land was made for you and me, that ultimately everything belongs to everyone, that essentially we all belong to one another, and it is in keeping this in mind and acting accordingly that is in our best interest in that it is the way we enjoy the journey to the utmost, by letting love lead the way as love is the heart of happiness, and only unconditional love leads to unconditional happiness.

Received an offer to teach at a charter school - first time teacher - asked to negotiate salary, thoughts?

Received an offer to teach at a charter school - first time teacher - asked to negotiate salary, thoughts?

I'm an aspiring teacher and career changer. I interviewed at a local charter network in my city, and one of the largest. I initially applied for the apprentice teacher role. After my interview with the principal, he offered me a promotion, salary increase, sign-on bonus and the job on the spot. Normally it takes time to decide one's candidacy, but I suppose he was desperate for teachers and saw potential in me.

Details of the offer are listed below:

Job offer at one of the main large charter school networks

High school, 9 to 12

Teaching Mathematics, full-time, resident teacher, 5 classes, (upgraded from apprentice teacher)

Salary step of $59.250

Sign-on bonus of $2,000

Professional development and curriculum assistance throughout teaching

coaching and mentoring during my first year

free graduate schooling, (only out-of-pocket expense is $1,500 per year)

Start date of October 8th, working from home, and in-person October 12th

I interviewed on September 23rd, 8 AM. I was given the verbal offer at 9:30 AM.

Job offer was sent on Friday, September 24th, 6:00 PM

I asked to negotiate starting salary this morning to $65,500.

Thoughts on anything I should have, what I have done so far, what I might want to do moving forward between the time I am waiting for them to get back to me and signing the offer?

For full transparency, I intend to accept the offer, I just want to make sure I am asking for the right things and not leaving anything on the table.

Will financial aid cover another associates degree and a bachelors?

So I already have one associates in interior design. I hated it, also hated the job I got and never moved on to a bachelors degree. I’m considering a lot of things to go back to school for right now. But if I chose to go back for something that needed a bachelors degree, would they pay for a second associates?

I’m considering accounting as one option. Interior design doesn’t have any credits that would cut down the degree completion time though. Totally different careers.

My job may actually cover most f the associates, so I may be able to pay for it without aid, but I think definitely need aid for the bachelor’s when I’m done. I don’t know if that’s a thing you can do.

I don’t make much money, but my company is pretty generous with the school assistance and I have some savings.

Leaving the profession, don't know what to do next

Hey everyone, as the title suggests, I need advice. I have my bachelors in education and no longer want to teach. However I don't know what I want to do instead, all I know is I need to make more money, and due to my health can't do a lot of heavy lifting or strenuous activity. Does anyone who has left teaching have any suggestions that they've been happy with?

I'm afraid of going to school and I'm 18.

I've been bullied there, I've been beaten, made fun of by my classmates, other students, but mostly my teachers. I know I'm stupid, no need to make me the but of a joke. It caused both of my suicide attempts. It caused me to start self-harming. It's the only thing that calms me down and I can't do that anymore either. I don't know, is this what the wonderful school years are about? When I tell someone that I'm afraid of going to school, I get laughed at. But I have my reasons, but you never listen.

Europe Vocational schools vs US colleges.

Hello, I have a question about vocational schools which are in Europe and colleges in USA. Are they same? Like in Europe you can learn different professions in vocational schools. Software developer, computer science, carpenting, electrician, etc. Are they comparable with US colleges where you can learn professions aswell? If not how do they differ?

A different online testing format?

I have been in online university since I started and I find the format very questionable, so I'm just interested to see people's opinions on online school compared to in-person.

(US) 2000s “gym class” was terrible (rant)

I should preface that I’m a guy. Our district separated us by gender in to classes and rarely did things together.

Physical education - that’s what my district calls it, yet we called it gym because it was held in the gymnasium. The only time I remember a pencil being involved was when I forgot my gym shorts, was sent to detention and had to write a paper on why I wouldn’t forget them again. What’s worse is I was proud of the paper I wrote and the “coach” didn’t even read it.

We never studied anything. Every day we came in, told what we were doing and it basically was an exercise/workout class.

The class was loosely graded on your physical capabilities, such as how far you could stretch or how many laps you could run. I regularly walked and was probably slowest.

They essentially forced students to touch eachother, we did this weird stretch regularly in high school where you lay on your stomach and the person behind you lifted your thighs. No one ever did this alone except for when we had an odd number of people. It was uncomfortable.

We were even required to shower from time to time (it was a pass/fail grade sometimes), which everyone did naked. I was the kid who wore swimming trunks and was made fun of for it.

This was one of the most useless classes in my opinion. I think I did 5 years of this between middle school and high school. Gym was the “subject” I hated most.

It would have been nice to learn more about physical health and less forced to workout the entire class.

How is it today? What was your experience like?

Education path advice?

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place for this so if not sorry. I'm an 18 year old 19 this December in the UK I dropped out of A level after a year for reasons of mental health and got a job working in a factory. Obviously this isn't ideal and im essentially asking for advice on how to continue my education I would like to attend uni next year however I doubt I would be accepted for anything because of the fact I have no qualification beyond GCSE I don't see resitting A level as an option as that would delay me even further but if that's the only real way then I understand that. Thanks in advance. Tldr: dropped out of A level seeking advice on how to further pursue education.

College Advice for Gifted High Schooler from Bad School System

I am an independent Japanese teacher. I have a student who sought me out because she read all my online resources and needed further instruction. She is from Puerto Rico (like me). She speaks Spanish at home. She understands English perfectly well, even if she doesn't speak it regularly. She has dreams of doing her undergraduate degree in the United States. I have no doubt that she has the potential to do so. She really is quite brilliant once she's given the space to thrive. However, the school system she is in is subpar. She doesn't have a robust math foundation (Algebra I and spotty Algebra II) and all the English she knows she's had to do by herself. (The only novel in English she's ever read in school was The Giver). She's taken the SAT twice. Once she got ~950 and the second time she got ~1150.

She's looking for advice for college. It seems to me that it'd do her well to do a junior college program to acclimatize her to the US and bring her up to speed on certain subjects before finishing her bachelor's at a regular university. Maybe that's not the best advice to give her, though.

Any thoughts? Many thanks in advance.

Special Education/Special Needs Kids with failing grades, making "Bad life Choices." end up more successful than the A + students

I just turned 30, I just got off the phone with my old friend who was in the same SPED study halls as me and we got to catch up. It's no secret now. I use to doubt myself, doubt the fact that ADHD was some kind of super power, but it totally is.

I'm seeing it all take place in my life, allow me to explain.

Got off the phone with the one sped friend who I honestly thought was going to fall deep into drugs right? Wore wacky clothes, hung around the soda machine, got in trouble with the cops. Spun fire on a chain and liked magic tricks.

He's a super successful Lazer lights show manufacturer and distributor. Got offered to go hang at his lake house, massive, paid for, dream car in the garage, smoking hot wife who was also a soda pop hallway kid with the goth clothes, from a totally different state and their highschool photos look identical, complete soul mates.

So he informs me that the role model student that came #1 GPA in the whole school ended up on pain killers after a bad divorce (high school sweethearts.) Works at the local dollar store and a restaurant for tips. Would have NEVER thought he would have taken that route.

So I start thinking about all the other rejects that had terrible grades that everyone said would do terrible in life right???

He says. "Remember Tommy the kid who was perma fried on acid and blared headphones and had the slur?"

He's on tour with his favorite metal band as a sound engineer and he makes 180K a year, he's he's Hawaii on vacation, face times him; his slur is gone and he's super healthy.

What about the popular chick with the massive house that always has parties? "Heroin."

So he asks me, what do I do? I run private contracts, own both my rare dream cars, I smoke pot, listen to rock roll, have an amazing bachelor pad, single, no kids, everything's paid for in full. 135K a year. Dropped out first year of college after leaving highschool with like a 1.8 gpa, through my highschool diploma in the trash.

And he goes. "Bro, EVERYONE use to make fun of us in special Ed. I had literal panic attacks every night that I was a failure. And I realized after walking into my dream home with my wife and child waiting for me after a long trip on the road for major venues, that special Education kids just means YOU START VISUALIZING YOUR SUCCESSES AND MANIFESTING YOUR DESIRES QUICKER THAN EVERYONE ELSE, you ditched the curriculum because you saw the path before anyone else did. Look at all of us! Every single person from special Education is making over 100k a year. . .

Remember the kid that said he was gonna build Rollercoaster for a living??? And everyone always interrupted him and told to go ride a Rollercoaster every time he explained his plans, and he always got bummed out and bullied?

*Major Six Flags Rollercoaster designer, tester. Has aero companies considering his parts and service for their flight simulators.

At that moment, I knew.

A More Accurate IQ Test Equivalent?

Note: this does not include anything EQ related, as that is a separate department (Social intelligence)

For a while there's been controversy on iq tests and their accuracy on determining intelligence. I myself have been struggling in research of what makes someone intelligent, for a few yrs since hs sophomore.

Intelligence is too vague so I turned to the building blocks instead: -Math ability (problem solving) -Critical Thinking -Reasoning -Learning -Memory -'Decision Making' (includes predicting and planning, however only applied w/ expertise in specific field. No translation into other areas) -'Stoicism' (tilt management level) -Basic Literary comprehension (not advantagous but necessary)

Decision-making is the umbrella for; planning, predicting, critical thinking, and reasoning. Even so, a test is still essential for decision making due to other factors not found elsewhere, which effect intelligence.

Reasoning is used to derive conclusions from assumptions while 'critical thinking' is used to validate them.

Learning is your ability to digest concepts, for example; leaving the car on park when pulled into a parking space.

Memorizing (memory) is about mentally digesting facts. This begins with short term memory, which is why chunking is sometimes commonly used in this occasion.

Tests

  1. CCAT (Criteria Cognitive Aptitude Test) claims to measure: Ability to digest and apply new things (tailored to reasoning), Critical thinking, Problem solving, and Learning ability

  2. Stoic Personality Test

  3. Decision-making Test

  4. Memory Test: Memory championship exercises (any of them. The reason being is the other tests are medical, which measure the best score as an average.)

Mind you I'm not a professional, nor do I pretend to be. I welcome any corrections and am open to criticism.

In need of resources for special education student in Spanish 1.

Thanks for taking the time to read my request for aid. I have a student with semi-severe cognitive deficits (9th grader at around a 2nd or 3rd grade level). She is on a modified curriculum in all subjects. I am working with the Spanish teacher on these modifications but we're having some difficulty with this task. If anyone has or can provide a recommendation for special education resources for Spanish 1, I would be extremely grateful.

(As a side note, the student is in a Spanish class at the mother's insistence. So we are doing what we can to service her accordingly.)

What are the pros and cons of Orton-Gillingham literacy instruction for neurotypical k-3 students?

Hello,

My kids' school recently partnered with a local non-profit (https://www.grovesacademy.org/) to re-train K-3 teachers with their literacy curriculum, which seems to be based upon Orton-Gillingham instruction, except extending it to all students, not just students with dyslexia.

I'm struggling to find any good data or even unbiased testimonials about the pros-and-cons, as well as efficacy, of the program. The best I found was this meta-analysis from more than a decade ago which basically concludes that the jury is still out: https://www-tandfonline-com.ezp1.lib.umn.edu/doi/full/10.1080/17489530802037564

For those of you familiar with the method, what are your experiences? Any comparisons to other curricula?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Halloween kids book

Only one day left to get your hands on a free digital copy of Weeny, The Little Green Monster on Amazon.

⭐️The story was about a little monster who wanted to play. After being told had many friends that they were too busy he felt lonely. 3 ghosts came out to play and there was a surprise at the end. The story was a fun and playful read.

🌟This book shows children that sometimes people are busy for a good reason and just because they’re busy doesn’t mean they don’t care.

And if you have some time, please leave a review. It would mean the world to me. Thank you 🙏

Transcript Help?

Hi Everyone,

My undergraduate career consisted of 2 schools. The first I only spent a year at before transferring out to the second where I completed the rest of my degree. For that reason I have 2 transcripts, so I was wondering if anyone knew how I could calculate my cumulative GPA from both schools. At the moment I have 2 official transcripts each with separate GPAs from each respective school.

TIA!!!

I enrolled in the faculty of commerce in my university because my grades weren't high enough to enroll in the faculty of engineering

I know this is just a naïve thought but I need some confirmation, Is it possible to get a bachelor's in engineering in any kind of way after finishing college? or during college?? or should I give up on that?

Another question ; Is there a way to study the curriculum of the faculty of engineering online? If I cant get a degree in it I at least want to study it as a hobby

What exactly can I do with a Pure and Applied Sciences cegep degree?

I live in Quebec, Canada and am trying to figure out my lifepath. I have no real ambitions or ideas of where my life can head, and I don't even know if this is the right forum for this lol.

I've been studying in cegep for a while now, completely aimless. I'd like to know what options I have since my school's career councillor has been quite unhelpful. I think the only options that are worthwhile with such a degree require me to study at university.

I've been doing cegep without really planning for my university education, I didnt have a career or idea when I started and just hoped I would eventually, but it still never dawned on me. Quite simply I'm guideless as to how to proceed with my education and don't know the specifics as to how to ascend to a higher point.

Here is the Pure and Applied recommendations from my college's page directly:

copy paste and translated from french:

>This profile prepares you specifically for university studies in the field of pure and applied sciences (engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science, actuarial science, planning and environment, architecture, teaching of mathematics and science at the secondary level, geology, etc.).

Corresponding university studies :

  • Planning and environment
  • Architecture, town planning and design
  • Secondary school mathematics education
  • Secondary school science and technology education
  • Génie
  • Geography
  • Geology
  • Geomatics
  • Computer science
  • Mathematics, statistics and actuarial science
  • Meteorology and climate
  • Physics
  • Earth Science

.

All of theses sound nice but theyre also very vague. I don't know exactly what I'm supposed to do with this knowledge. I also don't know how to pick a university or choose which program to go into after this.

Any help, no matter how redundant, is appreciated. I'm essentially guideless. Even a link to some light reading somewhere else would be nice.

Thank you!

Switching courses at 19 in college

Hi this is going to be a long story so sorry about that. I am currently 19 doing a Level 3 AAT in accounting, while I can do accounting and all the units in it I don't really enjoy it. I was considering switching to doing a level 3 BTEC in IT as i actually have an interest their and its got good career prospects especially if I went to UNI (Which I plan on).Only issue is i am 19 and if i did two years at college to do level 3 I would be 21 by the time im done and hopefully go to university. My question is ultimately should i just switch if i got the choice to and should i go to uni at 21? Is 21 too old to go have a normal experience as if i was 18 like live in student accom with other students and go parties and stuff? Any response would be very much appreciated -Mat.

PE Safety Activity Suggestions

Hi. I’m an elementary PE teacher. Recently I had a student get a concussion while playing a tag game (All Horses Run) on the grass. I didn’t see the accident, however as far as the student can recall he was running and a tagger tagged him too hard and knocked him off balance leading to a concussive fall.

I want to address this by doing some activities centered around preventative safety. My question is what kind of safety learning activities would you suggest?

I’m thinking a lesson including (1) how to correctly fall and land with a mat, (2) a lesson on spatial awareness by having everyone randomly move in an area and trying to keep three feet apart, (3) giving a long talk about to being too competitive that we are unsafe with our bodies.

Any suggestions out there? Thank you.

Advice for US system and special needs

I am a parent. We are in Wisconsin if that matters.

My daughter had a medical incident and I have been coming with her to elementary school. Today is my third day. I am just here to support my kid. However, this has given me the opportunity to observe full days of school.

I am absolutely appalled and terrified by what I have seen in her classroom. There are 3 children that torture the entire class. I know 2 are special needs. The poor teacher has to spend the majority of her time managing these 3 kids. The other 12 kids sit there helplessly and afraid.

There is one kid ("Adam") (I am assuming autistic) that makes noise the entire time. He fidgets and makes noise and calls everyone else out on their behavior. But he is (understandingly) unable to monitor himself. (I don't intend to turn this into a debate/lesson on autism/fidgeting/stimming.)

  1. It seems unfair that Adam is able to move freely around the room and makes noises 100% of the time. The other children are expected to sit quietly and ignore his behavior. Is that the best we can do? Simply telling others to ignore? What about the kids who are doing what they are supposed to be doing? Are they rewarded?

  2. How do you handle Adam calling out other kids on breaking the same rules(i.e. interrupting the teacher, not sitting down) he is constantly violating himself? It is a double standard. I know he has an IEP. Do we teach other children that they can get away with anything as long as they get this special permission?

  3. Adam is physically violent with others. If you get near him and he decides he doesn't want you near him, he hits and kicks without warning. I have been told that he can perceive a grievance against another student and will immediately become violent with them (whether they are near him or not). There is not any consequences for Adam's physical outburst (that I have personally observed). The other children basically understand this is just how he is and there is nothing they can do. Also, when the other children are injured no one seems to care. They are not sent to the nurse. They aren't comforted. They seem to understand they need to suffer in silence.

The second child ("Brad") seems to have behavioral issues. He easily becomes violent. Multiple times a day, he is throwing all kinds of stuff around the classroom. It seems that if it is minor, it is ignored. If it is major, an aide is called to physically remove him from the room. The teacher spends so, so much time dealing with him, his behavior, and the consequences to the room.

  1. Really, Brad is throwing pencils, glue, crayons, etc. And it is just ignored? The teacher and other kids pick up the stuff he throws. He isn't made to deal with consequences like clean up?

  2. Brad throws pillows, cushions, books and chairs(!!?) around the room. Not just push things, overhead throws. He is either physically removed or they relocate the rest of the class while he is dealt with. Then he just rejoins the class when he calms down, like 20 minutes later. Really?? That's all?

  3. I have not seem him do any class work. In 2.5 days, he is a distraction, disruptive or has been removed due to his behavior 100% of the time. I have not seem him even attempt a single assignment. How is this education? It seems that his education should be focused on therapeutic strategies to enable him to even begin to learn math or reading or writing.

  4. I know this seems ableist but I don't know how else to phrase these questions. I am too frustrated to try to be more politically correct. Why are these children even in a mainstream classroom? What happened to special education classrooms? I absolutely believe all children have the right to an education. But education should have a different definition for some. Why are they being set up to fail? Brad obviously cannot handle being with other children. He is always in trouble. He goes out and them comes back and is simply encouraged to "turn his day around"? Shouldn't he be in a safe space and encouraged/given tools to succeed?

Then there is "Chris" I won't pretend to be privy to her issues and I don't know enough to assume anything. Her behavior isn't anywhere near disruptive as the first two. She does get angry and I have seen it manifest physically. She kicks and throws things. Again, she is not made to clean it up.

  1. She goes in and out of the classroom whenever she wants. At first I assumed this was for her to "reset" and come back ready to learn. But she is often just walking in and out. It is a distraction to others but easily ignored. But she doesn't seem to be learning either.

I absolutely think children need the freedom to take a time out and then go back when they are ready to learn. But if a child is leaving the room any time an assignment is handed out, how is she learning anything?

How do I even begin to address this? I can't simply ignore it all. My child does not feel safe at school. Then there is the child who hurt my daughter. "Dave" pushed her off the playground at recess. Both of her arms are broken. She had to have surgery on both arms. She is in full arm casts and needs assistance with everything. This is costing our family thousands of dollars and that is just for the physical trauma. What about the mental trauma?

  1. What were Dave's consequences for pushing my kids and breaking both of her arms? I know his parents were told of an incident. They only know the extent because we are friends outside of school. I never received an incident report. I only know what my daughter, Dave, and other kids have told me. I don't know if an adult even witnessed the incident.

  2. I requested that she change classrooms. The principal told me that "they want kids to work out their issues on their own." This isn't a simple misunderstanding. He put my kid in the hospital!!! She had surgery on both arms. She has to have at least one other surgery in 6 months. My kid does not feel safe around him. How do I protect her??? I can't come to school with her every day for the rest of her life.

Please help. I don't know what to say and who to say it to!!

Was lazy before. I had no ambition and no motivation to study.. But now I start studying mathematics and English from basic.

So I have a question.

Is it too late for me now to be a bioengineer?

I'm 20 now but I'm very ignorant about this world. I'm also struggling in maths basic. I'm naive and still imature. I believe my IQ is below average. I dunno how to communicate with people. I also don't understand how the world works... I have no jobs. Right now I'm just studying by myself and I plan to do that for 8 years.

My second question is ... is it a good idea to only study English, mathematics and science?

What I mean by that is I will ignore every subjects that are not mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology. The reason why I think I should ignore other subjects is because I want to have more time to study subjects that's related to science. I want to be a bioengineer.

Sorry for my poor English,,I actually don't study English as much mathematics... Right now I'm focusing on mathematics because I really don't want to struggle at maths basic forever, so... 80% effort of studying mathematics and 20% effort of studying English. One day after mastered the maths basics I will start studying English more but for now I will just focus on maths.

When to transition into admin?

Hi fellow educators! I’d like to hear from folx who have gone into administration at any point about what spurred your decision. How did you know that it was time for you to move into admin? What was your reason?

I’ve read about the pros and cons and spoken to administrators about their experiences, good and bad. So I’m not necessarily looking to hear how your experience was once you became an admin, just what prompted that decision. For context, I’ve been teaching 10 years, middle school all the way up to college, and I am firmly in the world of independent schools with no real desire to return to public schools. So if you have independent school experience, that would also be a plus. I enjoy teaching, but I really enjoy and feel I’m good at leadership roles when I have had the chance to have them. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Can i swich my gpa to uk equivalent?

I have an issue... It might sound silly, but all my life I’ve wanted to practise law at a corporate law firm in Manhattan. The issue is that to do this I need a diploma from a highly recognised university, which would require extremely good high school grades which I simply do not have. What I’m thinking is that since you in Denmark to get an A need 98%, and for example in the uk you only need 70%. It would be smart if I somehow could make my gap into what it would have been in the uk were I to apply for university there.

Is this possible or is there perhaps anything else I can do to compensate for a lower gpa?

Stupid question; What is vocational program & more

  1. what is vocational program?

  2. after picking which college you will go to,

A) does this vocational program mean it has to be taken before entering college? like, for example; you have to take the vocational program at your town, in a special school, learn & study for like 5 months of your choosing program (vocational program). Then you can get out of that town & finally go to college, all-ready-and-prepared thanks to your vocational program you took.

To put it simply, The vocational program is basically an appetizer before the real meal? The college life?

B) does this vocational program mean it has to be taken in the middle of your college life?

That's all. Someone please help my dumbass.

I am currently taking General Education at a special school here. I got 4 months left until exams. Then, i'll graduate & get my highschool diploma. I can't actually do vocational while i'm taking general. Hence why i'm asking this question online

This vocational program thing seriously confuses me. Do i have to take it before entering college to lube up my brain? Do i have to take it while i'm college?

I'm taking Vanier college. I already chose two programs i wanna learn & chose.

But this vocational program shyte.... what the hecc is it.

please explain it like you're explaining it to a toddler. thank you.

lol.

How do I stay motivated to keep learning?

It just dawned on me this year how behind I have fallen. I don't remember much from school (not even sex ed) and I really want to apply myself and learn while in this graduate program but it feels impossible. I feel like I stopped applying myself in middle school. I am 26 years old and I want to study, I want to be able to engage with people, I want to finish a book and read at a decent pace, I want to keep up with conversations, I want to remember things that I've learned but sometimes it feels too impossible (but I know it isn't).

Should I miss the whole day of college because I feel ill

I currently feel ill dealing from the after-effects of a stomach bug. Should I go into college an hour later than I'm timetabled to, allowing myself some time to rest or should I simply skip the whole day? I don't want to be marked down on my attendance but I don't want to waste my time going in, in an un-productive state of mind.

Former SW here..will this affect my future as a teacher?

Throwaway for VERY obvious reasons.

I’m a sophomore in college, and I can hardly afford to feed myself anymore. I run the risk of being homeless constantly and I’m desperate.

I used to make decent money on onlyfans (masked/never showing my face). However stopped due to the fear of future employers finding out through taxes or parents of the preschoolers I teach currently finding out.

However after stopping I lost so much money and went back to struggling. I want to go back, but it could ruin my life..anyone have advice?

Gay and new to the profession, seeking ethical advice

I'm an intern teaching at a Title 1 high school. The experience has been exciting/exhausting/empowering/frustrating in all the usual ways, but I keep coming across a problem that I don't know how to address, that being that I'm a lesbian. I'm not particularly butch (nearly every time I come out I get the whole "I couldn't even tell!" spiel) so I doubt that any of my students or colleagues have realized. I can't really get a good feel for the school's attitude toward LGBT teachers; a couple weeks ago I overheard a teacher having a (very loud) argument with a student about a homophobic social media post the teacher had made publicly, but there is also an active GSA and little GLSEN stickers on a lot of doors. I'm hesitant to talk to my mentor teacher about this out of concern that she may no longer be comfortable mentoring me.

Also, recently our admin made some really poor choices regarding a trans student's privacy and dignity, and the school chose to sweep the entire matter under the rug rather than deal with it in any meaningful or restorative way.

I'm working in the South, if that counts for anything. My students are often offhandedly homophobic (slurs and the like) and I treat it like regular bullying, but I'm wondering if I am obligated, not only as a teacher, but as a gay person, to be more upfront about why it bothers me. My sister, a seasoned teacher and a straight woman, cautioned me to be neutral as possible and operate under a "don't ask, don't tell" policy, but that irks me on a deeply personal level. Part of my excitement at entering the profession was being the adult role model that I never had as a young gay student, and now I get the feeling that this simply isn't in the cards.

How do you and your school handle LGBT+ teachers and students? If you are LGBT+, what has worked best for your classroom and your interactions with students? Am I restricted by law of what I can and cannot say? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

And I guess the question that eats at me the most... if that teacher who made the social media post starts running his mouth again, what should I do?

going from As to Cs... coping.. loneliness

Hi everyone first of all I apologize if my post makes you feel mad because I've been pissing everyone off today. Today I took an exam in a new program I joined. I got a 77% which is passing but I've never gotten such a low score in my life. Since I was a kid school has been my life and having good Grade was such a proud moment. i've been a straight As student with some Bs here in there. now that I'm getting sees I feel like shit. I cried today because I got on 77 and several people got mad at me stating that I shouldn't be crying because it makes people feel bad if they got a lower score. I see their point and I know it hurts people but I can't help but cry because I've never gotten a 77.I'm not a mean person and I don't do this to make others feel bad. It's just really hard to adjust from getting 90s to 70s now. now I decided I'm never gonna tell anyone my grades because people just get upset whenever I start crying. to be honest I don't even know what to do anymore I feel like a failure and it's even worse because now I feel lonely. I just feel like no one understands me. It's really hard to see a 77 as an amazing score when your whole life you have gotten 90s to 100s. any advice on what to do. I'm grateful that I'm passing yes but this is a huge change that I'm not used to. Also not to mention that I study 24/7 And not getting the grades i wanr. thank you and please don't judge and if you judge Just keep in mind that I don't do this to hurt anyone. I feel lonely and no single soul understands me

What are the different education structures or systems that are used?

Okay so recently in the media there has been some talk at least in America that the education system was structured not to produce educated Americans but to produce dedicated workers. Whether or not this is true I'm not sure of, but it did get me thinking that if that's the claim of the system in america, there must be other education structures or systems that other countries or even other groups within the United States use, and I'm wondering what those structures might look like and how they differ from the greater education system in America?.

Journal Article/Resource Request

Hey all, I'm an educational technologist supporting an all virtual school this year. Our teachers have a lot of classroom experience but are struggling to shift their teaching styles to the virtual environment.

One of the big things that I keep seeing is that the teachers are super accustomed to being able to be in control of everything that happens within the walls of their classroom and as a result their management style hasn't transferred well to the environment they are in now.

Do any of you have a good journal article or research based resources about classroom management in the virtual classroom? I'm struggling a little bit on my end to find something geared towards this stuff that is actually research based.

Good News Sources for Teaching Writing

Hi! I'm putting together a writing class for EFL students that is based on current events, and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I'm looking for any news sites that fit the following criteria:

  • Written news at a b2 level (basically high intermediate English level)
  • Are about current events that matter, so not some celebrity changing their hairstyle
  • Follow an essay style format (introductions, topic sentences, supporting sentences, etc.), not just newspaper blurbs.
  • Articles are 600-1,500 words long. (about 2-5 pages long)

Thanks in advance!

Why is cramming such a norm in schools?

(Before anything I just want to say that I'm unsure whether "School Culture & Policy" or "Standardize Testing" is a more appropriate flair so sorry if I ended up using wrong one.)

Apparently pre-exam cramming has become the norm and I personally never understood it.

To me it feels kinda wrong, unnatural and at times dishonest. Tests and exams are meant to test a person's proficiency and/or knowledge in a particular subject (that's also the dictionary definition btw), and cramming hurts that purpose.

You see, cramming turns it from an examination of knowledge to simply an examination of how much you remembered from what you read last night. This is even more so problematic when some people actually have memory issues, such as I who has ADHD.

I prefer to go in an examination and give my honest answers. I would honestly tell whether I truly know and understand the subject given. I remember my classmates taking keywords, write their own index and etc. to make it easier to remember. No offense but I find that somewhat wrong in the context learning because I actually take time to understand the lessons and understand why things are the way they are, then my peers just treat it like a trivia game that will get forgotten once it's all over.

To what extent should the school work be based on student's own research?

Hello,

I am concerned, if not infuriated, by the amount of independent research assigned by the teachers across mainly the humanities subject (geography/history) to high school students. As a student, I find it utterly ineffective and devoid of inspiration and motivation that we seek knowledge and wisdom not from the teachers but from the internet for the majority of the time. I am a high school student, and I have teachers in Eng, Sci whom I really like and appreciate their effort and commitment. From my understanding, it can be a teacher's problem, or it can be the curriculum's fault. Either ways, I believe part of the education is not reaching even near its full potential. An interesting feature of Australian education is its freedom to research on the internet, but to what extent should you think this should be?

English Literature curriculum from a students prospective.

I love english, I think creative and curious people innately love the english arts. Do most of us love the pieces of english literature in the curriculum? No. Why is that? I have multiple reasonings on why and maybe its solely one or none that's up to you. The way majority of teachers teach english literature, most of them either cannot understand the pieces enough to teach it to teenagers or understand themselves. Understandably it is for the most part old english literature and translated poorly by teachers and the poems, short stories and novels over the years are hard to comprehend, especially to us.

The thesis has no correlation to today's generation if it is only relatable to olden days. The thesis itself is understandable but to get to it can be painstakingly waste of time compared to newer literature, it's not entertaining, it's not any new meanings we haven't grasped in movies, newer novels and even moms facebook poems. I do think its important to know where all english literature began from and how our favorites are influenced by old english pieces. Respectfully it was a masterpiece, but you can have the most mind changing literature from today's generation from a scarcely spoken language or terribly translated and it is no longer what it is. Maybe those who study that language or able to translate it in their own ways can learn to love it but for the most part it's not worth the praise or in curriculum.

English terms, my teacher just gave me a 40 page booklet with around 50-100 terms and frankly I don't know half of them even though I read everyday. Is it necessary to give micro labels, for example "Lend" - an introductory section of a news story. Is that necessary to learn for english literature, don't we already know that the introduction is going to be about the focus of the whole piece? Oh this ones my favorite "Internal rhyme" a word inside a line rhymes with another word on the same line theres like 30 of these unnecessary terms that are just sub versions of another term or system we already know.

I know this sounds like I despise literature but I don't, I despise the lack of freedom, the lack of "art" in english literature curriculum.

The correlation between (1) performance in university (2) performance on the job

Hello,
if I choose, I will in 3 years time, have a bachelor's degree from a good university.
I am curious though, about this relationship. A lot of people seem to think that their education was good for getting the job, but that they inevitably had to learn the job afterwards and that the knowledge they had when they came there, was irrelevant or/and outdated

This worries me, I would like to think that if I get A´s in every course, I will be able to do the job
afterwards.

If this is not the case, then I can´t rationalize doing anymore than what I need for simply passing.

Education / Job in this case, is computer science / programmer

What are your thoughts? Is there any available research on the topic?

Thanks in advance!

To me it makes sense - I kill myself, but at least I was smart and good at something. But lately, I've been thinking of becoming a lower grade student, like from an A student with occasional B's to a B student. Putting in less time to have time to do the things I like. But it feels wrong. Should I do it?

Is College more like Old-School High School Education?

I have heard a comment among educators that the Freshman/Sophomore years of college is more like the old-school/traditional High School Education. There is too much remedial education of basic core subject matter that is suppose to be taught in HS that has to be re-taught through remedial education in college. Is this a reflection on the teaching system, teaching content or just observations by HS teachers and College instructors?

Music in the classroom

Alright so I had an idea and I want feedback, especially if it’s a dumb idea. The idea goes as follows: Every “work period” day, a different student is asked his or her favourite song. That song is then played on YouTube music, with auto play on to let the algorithm decide the playlist. This then A, allows the students to listen to something other than their classmates sniffling and scribbling, B, allows the students to open up about something personal but not super touchy feely, C, allows students to learn about different artists if their preferred genres are the same, or the nuances of a genre if their preferences differ, and D, promote tolerance of others’ views. For instance, if Classmate A hates Classmate B’s genre of music. This can be toned with “Everybody gets a turn/Not everyone likes the same thing”, which 1 is a truth and 2 is a life lesson in tolerance. I personally do not have a professional education background, but I think this may be effective. However, I could be full of crap. Thoughts?

Is there any data that suggests whether it is better to have a '3 year' college system like in the US, or a '4 year' college system like in the UK?

What I mean is, does the extra year in the US help US students in anyway? Is there any data to look at that supports a 4 year university experience rather than a 3 year one?

EDIT: I was obviously stupid and got the degree lengths the wrong way round - it's FOUR years for the US, and THREE years for the UK

Submitted September 18, 2021 at 11:54PM by misomiso82 https://ift.tt/3ApNKyL

Anyone think a lot university programs are overrated?

I truly believe that the only serious life choices for a 4 year bachelor's degree in USA (and Canada) are :

1 - computer science

2 - business related degrees (business admin, finance, commerce included)

3 - math ( statistics, actuarial science, data science included)

4 - established / mainstream engineering degrees (mechanical, civil, electrical, computer, software, chemical, aerospace)

5 - professional healthcare (ex: bachelor of science in nursing)

This is in no particular order. I think any other undergrad has significantly worse professional value and is not worth spending 4 years of your life (and money / earning potential). Furthermore your interests can change during the 4 years of your undergrad.

You may no longer want to be be a doctor, or scientific researcher, or lawyer for example. In those cases:

- perhaps if you want to be a doctor, go for a nursing degree so you have the option of working as nurse if you no longer wanna do 4 more years of school.

- For those who want to get into scientific research, maybe pursue an engineering undergrad so you have the option if in 4 years life happens and you need to start making money or if you're no longer interested in working in academia. I think most people who do physics or chemistry degrees are better off doing engineering degrees.

- If you want to be a lawyer or work in politics, you can get a business degree and can still pursue those career paths. You can get into law school with a business degree and a lot of politicians worked in the private sector.

Other fields of study are important, but they have low professional value so while it's cool to take electives or study them on your own time, they are not worth dedicating 4 years of full time studies for a bachelor's degree for most people.

There are 3 exceptions:

1 - If you're rich and you just want to go to school for fun and pay for it yourself, go for it.

2- If you are truely the elite in that subject - like lets say you start school in engineering and are exceptionally skilled in academia/research and truely believe you can be in the top 5% of physics / chemistry research, and it is recognized and recommended by your professors, then perhaps it's a good idea to consider switching to a science degree.

3- You truly believe whatever you will learn / experience is worth having an education with less professional value and worse job prospects.

Note that this post only discusses bachelor's degrees completed as full time studies. This post does not discuss college education or graduate studies. What do you guys think? Is there a field of study I missed that you think has comparable professional value as the 5 I listed?

Who can help me interpret my first grader’s renaissance star scores?

I understand the basics but it is so hard to find any information about these tests online, who can help me out?

Math: scaled score 893, percentile rank 97

Reading: scaled score 959, percentile rank 98, IRL 3.1, ZPD 2.8-3.9

We did online kindergarten through a district sponsored program last year and it was… lacking, so his skills are emerging on a lot of basics like handwriting, coloring, etc. (if it is mom’s idea he hates doing it and the online program provided no hands on work). But obviously he is advanced with reading and math skills. I’m just not sure what I should be letting these scores tell me. Any insight?

Admin doesn't run our school; our tech department runs our school.

We've been back for three weeks. We didn't have wifi for the first week. The chrome books weren't handed out until a couple days ago. Our internet is incredibly unreliable. Our tech person refuses help offered by our technology teachers. Our hard wired internet isn't working when we come in, but miraculously starts working once our technology person comes to work. Sometimes even when the hard wired internet works, the wifi internet does not. It's crazy. It's impossible to plan a lesson that includes technology. Many of our teachers are using hot spots on their phones for their lessons.

If you ask the tech person anything, they lash out at you. I suspect they don't know as much as they're supposed to know. It is clear that they're in charge though, not our admin.

Question from a kindergarten parent

Hello fabulous teachers!

My son is currently 5 years old and he has started kindergarten last month. He is a very self-motivated learner and really enjoys a challenge. He is also pretty quick at understanding something you teach him. I have basically done "preschool" with him at home and he at this point understands phonics and making words. He is almost done reading the first batch of "Bob's Books" for those familiar with that. He understands rhyming and picking out words that match the beginning and ending sound of a word you give him. If you tell him to spell "deer", he'll spell it "d-e-r" which I think is appropriate for this age?

In math, he can already add and subtract numbers over 10. For example 17 minus/plus 8. Can count by 5's, 2's, 10's.

My question is... for those kindergarten teachers out there...will he be able to advance these skills during kindergarten or will that not happen until first grade? All the work that he has brought home has been really simple for him thus far. I ask him if there is anything the teacher teaches that he doesn't understand or finds difficult and he says "no". He told me the other day in regards to what they are learning "I know everything".

A part of me is wondering if I should put him in a Montessori school for this K year but I don't know. I really also want him to get the social interaction that he hasn't had much of due to Covid (he does have younger siblings, though), but I also want him to be challenged. In Montessori, I know they really focus on math concept and begin working with your child at the level they currently are, even in reading.

I asked his teacher about how they differentiate learning for students who have advanced skills and was told that they will do small group learning with students at the same level... but this has yet to happen.

Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated!

What are your experiences in working with kids?

I'm currently working on a project in the experiential learning domain (still very early stage) and focusing on how we can create a different learning curriculum and experience for kids (8-15 years old). The goal is to create the right infrastructure so that kids can find and pursue their passion, become much more interdisciplinary and aware, and learn how to do things in the 21st century.

I'm currently trying to better understand what is important when working with kids, what are best practices, what triggers the kids' curiosity, how they collaborate together in groups, what drives them to do things, and how they choose their activities.

Any experts in this subreddit who would have time for a quick chat (parents' opinions are also welcome), and could share their experiences?

Best and thanks,

Vaheh
