Can my German Relative get another GED/HS Diploma in the USA?

Hi all!

My relative was born in the USA but completed high school in Germany before moving back to the USA. He grew up there from an infant to a young adult and can’t retrieve any of his high school information or diploma at this point as it was a long time ago. What would he need to do if he wanted to have a valid diploma in the USA? GED or High School again?

Thanks!

School screen time

What are people's opinions on the rise of e-books and TV screens in the classroom?

Local primary school requires all new students to use iPads for e-books, with physical books being phased out. In the classroom, instead of using a projector against a whiteboard, students have to look at a 65-inch TV screen during lessons.

I thought schools advocate LESS screen time.

This is a genuine question I just have no idea and am curious. And then like based on other countries does America’s education system get measured the same way as other countries

How do you think AI generated content will affect learning?

With the recent fascinating and equally scary content produced by Open AI, how do you think this tech will affect learning?

I'm not referring only as a support tool for learning, but also as a hurdle to evaluation.

I myself am a college student, and I'm fascinated by the idea of generating answers or arguments, for example, * because I'm amused by the possibility that some teachers will never suspect it and because it raises new problems about the ineffectiveness of traditional evaluation. This is a relatively unknown tech where I live.

I'm in the field of education myself, and it seems to me that if copy-paste from the web is already an issue, this will be an even bigger one. It is very likely the current software used against plagiarism will not catch it.

I am sure that if I ever teach in the future, I'll have to deal with this. And the whole field of education.

Also, what kind of reformulation in learning and evaluation would this need or lead to?

*Btw, not that I intend to cheat the system, but part of the system is exploitable and this is an interesting issue.

(I saw a thread not long ago about this, but didn't find it, and since there's few and old discussions about it I took the liberty of creating another one)

How to make students SHUT UP when I get in the classroom?

Hello teachers.

I'm a recent graduated teacher and I'll have to substitute the sciences teacher for the next two weeks. Thing is, my students (ages between 11 and 15 years old) are very loud the entire class and I don't know how to make them shut up/ask them to be quiet in more effective ways...

Everytime I start the class, they are very noisy and I have to stand infront of the board SCREAMING for them to pay attention on me. That attention/silent moment usually lasts for 2-5minutes and them they interrupt me and start to talk loud and make noise all again...

I think they dont respect me for being new and also for being substituting, but I need a more effective way to control their noise. Other than having to scream louder the entire fcking class...

Just for the record: I don't tell to shup up or be quiet. All I do is literally stay in front of them and call for their attention like "GUYS!!!! OVER HERE!!!! LOOK HERE!!!! GUYS!!!!! I NEED YOU GUYS TO HEAR ME"... but it doesn't work.

Any ideias?

My story as a foreign student in Russia.

I am a 23-year-old Lebanese student, I have been studying in Russia for the last 3 years. Mainly I moved to Russia because of the problems that my country suffers from, and I realized that I should leave my native country to find my place in life. So, I moved to Russia, enrolled in a university, learned the Russian language, created a business, and felt that I had a stable life for the first time in my life.
Since the start of the Russo-Ukrainian war (in the last 5 months), everything changed for me. I have been witnessing eye-soaring things, the economy started to deteriorate, I lost my part-time job, my business sales dropped, chaos is everywhere, and my university started to suffer, some teachers got kicked out because of their political opinions, some teachers decided to leave the university and the country, even students are trying to flee the country because everyone realizes the danger of staying in a university with no teachers to teach! Let alone the fact that I cannot receive money from outside of Russia anymore because all money transaction companies have closed, and if I found some third-party that would be willing to exchange money between Lebanon and Russia, the rate would be so low, adding to the fact the high rate of inflation here, so it means that I lost over 50% of my purchasing power just like that.
I realized that I have to leave my life in this country behind and find a European University to take me in.
I spent nights and nights writing my motivation letter, designing my CV, translating all my documents to English, getting a recommendation letter, researching for suitable universities with good Business programs…
I have been writing universities from all around Europe for a month now, and I was sending them emails explaining my situation, and also sent them my CV and the letters, hoping that they would understand my situation and help me.
Most of their reactions were like that:
- A single sentence saying, “Deadlines are over”.
- You’re not a European resident and we can’t let you apply now; you should wait till next year.
- Sorry, there is nothing we can do.
- You’re not Ukrainian.
- No reply.
After writing over 30 of the best universities in Europe, none was willing to take my case and just let me prove myself. I have a motivation letter that explains everything in detail, an amazing recommendation letter from my teacher, presentation about my job experience in Russia, and Olympiads and certificates.
Most of them did not even read the rest of my email, did not even read my letters, and they did not care for a second to think about the situation I am in!
It is frustrating for me to see that, I did not expect that universities (the place of knowledge) would just ignore me like that, it is like I am not a real person! I took all this effort in writing my emails and letters and there isn’t one university that could make an exception for me to continue my education?!
My academic life has ended just because of bureaucracy (deadlines), and because I am not European or Ukrainian. I do not deserve an education because I was not born in Europe.
I had high hopes of finding a university that would be generous enough to just move the deadline for me so I could save myself and my education. And I am now compelled to go to same place I came from (Lebanon), where I can’t even have a job or education.
I feel that my life is over, and I am frustrated and disappointed by all these institutions that call themselves (EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS), where open-mindedness, tolerance, acceptance, and being simply a human should be taught as a priority.
I know that not all universities are like that, but I just could not find any, and now I feel that my life is wasted, even after all the hard work I did for the last 3 years in Russia.
It looks like life is simply not for everyone, and no matter how hard you work and study, the only thing that can decide your future is a passport or a nationality.
I am trying not to give up, but I am feeling down… I am going back to my country on the 13th of August after 3 years of not returning, I am still not being able to adapt to the fact that my last 3 years were for nothing, the love of my life is on the other side of the world, and I am crying my hearts out everyday after seeing a rejection after a rejection. What is happening is shocking, and I can’t find a reasonable explanation for why this happening to me. I am trying my best to stay away from my suicidal thoughts, but life is just too heavy sometimes that you cannot even think straight.

Anyone else held back in school as a kid?

When I was 5, I was held back from entering kindergarten. This made me a year older than most of my peers, and having an April birthday, it also often made me older than kids in the grade above.

I always hated this, because it made me feel like my parents didn't believe in me, and that everyone else must be smarter than me. Everyone around me would ask about it when they would find out I'm a year older, and I could never give a good reason, since my parents never gave me one. It was weird graduating at 19, when everyone else graduated at 17 and 18.

This always made feel very lonely, like I was the only one experiencing this. So, I just wanted to ask, has anyone else gone through this and felt these kinds of feelings?

Advice on determine who your audience is when creating educational content.

Hello!

I am in the process of creating a conference and though I am not a teacher, I love teaching. Education will be the focus, on either past present, or future topics. The industry doesnt really matter for my questions, I'll just say it's engineering.

I am the process of determining our business plan and one of the issues I have is determining who the audience will be. My original idea was to target the general public; however, a few of the people in discussion with me would like to target a professional demographic.

So my question is, from an educational aspect, what challenges do you see in targeting too large of a group of people?

To get some interesting responses...from a theoretical perspective, can you educate the world? Someone I admire is Bill Nye, he targets kids, but because he was engaging and fun, adults enjoyed him as well.

Do you think it is possible to target the general public but get technical just enough and also fun and engaging that it may attract a Professional audience as well?

Thanks in advance!

Parents as Subs

What do you guys think? I remember in school, when parents would sub for us, it was awesome. We felt so much closer as a community, even the kids. It also encourages the kids whose parents and the sun were close to shape up.

So in my school, I'm looking to facilitate this same kind of atmosphere. We have basically zero school culture aside from state testing anxiety, and I'm hoping this might combat this a bit while building a stronger sense of community.

I plan to screen out the parents of behavior problem kids simply because the infallible humble logic of apples and trees. Any other advice or anecdotes from experience?

[Science] What should I study? I’m so stuck

So next year I’m going to uni and I’m sooo lost on what to do. I actually have no idea what to do and I also get bored easy and have ADHD and I feel like I’ll change up jobs or regret what I end up in.

I definitely want to do something in science though. The jobs I have considered are: - Astrophysicist - Anything in astronomy - Marine biologist - Forensic scientist - Neuroscientist - Something in psychology

Now out of all of these I found astronomy SO interesting and I would absolutely LOVEEE doing it but I’m not smart enough. I’m not getting the best grades at the moment so one of the main things is I want to study something that doesn’t require a you to be a genius. Also nothing that’s too much pressure for me.

If anyone that knows a job that has to do with astronomy that I don’t have to be Einstein for, please let me know !!

Also I found forensics interesting but when I think of myself doing it, it just doesn’t feel right.

My main interests: - Astronomy - I find anything about the humans like their psyche and the way they do things and why they do it interesting - Anything unknown. I like unsolved mysteries like wtf is in space or wtf is deep in the ocean hence marine biology and astronomy

I hope that all made sense. Ask any more questions if you need. Please help if you can, I’m extremely stuck

Alternative career path for successful teacher?

I love elementary ed, and have experienced over ten successful years in the classroom (Mostly 4th & 5th grades). I recently moved to a U.S. state where the credentialing process is very difficult, and I am worried that my current educator licensure won't transfer soon enough.

What are some rewarding and well-compensated options for an alternative career route, or at least a one-year stint in a different field, while I figure out my next move.

I should say that I also have solid hospitalty management experience, but would prefer not to go back to the service industry.

Thanks!

Self-education vs formal education

A random thought 💭

The reason formal education is given preference over self-education is that the former is easier because the things that are supposed to learn are limited & arranged for the students whereas the things to learn in the latter are unlimited & unorganized.

How do schools around the world handle extracurricular activities? Do teachers handle everything?

Malaysian teacher here. We get taken out of schools during student competition and events. Some teachers who are coaches, can be gone for over a month. Recently, my school hosted a district tournament for sports which lasted for three days. Over 25 teachers were taken out from school (some of these teachers were bringing students to tournaments of other sports). Best to say, not much learning was happening in school.

And we might also host the state level. So you can imagine where I am going here.

I just find it crazy. These competitions and programs are important for students but I just hate having my focus being diverted so much out of classroom.

How is it done elsewhere?

Black Lives Matter - (The Next Step In Equality & Justice Reform) (Updates)

We cannot wait for more George Floyds, so I went ahead and started the Leadership Process by sending this message to thousands of Ivy League Faculty members & schools, vetted by the Psychology Departments in education, to build momentum for change, this is the truth & no matter how challenging it is to accept, it must be heard by Billions more. Please, if you have a moment, share this message liberally, we do not have time to waste while the wheels of the systems of injustice are in place. The powers of oppression cannot shy away from the educated any longer. This is the message.

——-

Hi,

I need your undivided support in bringing more attention to this quintessential discrepancy within the reformation of the Social Justice System today. The redaction & removal of the term & word “Blackmail” - “A criminal activity related to thievery”, to have it removed from the printed & online language resources, as many other words have been throughout history. No clearer example could identify the next step necessary in the path for racial Justice & equality than the phonetic evolution of the English language itself. A ‘White Female’ would not stand with the subconscious slander imposed on her racial identity so blatantly misconstrued as her being “An illegal activity related to theft”. So this must be changed, no ‘Black Male’ need be further oppressed by this presupposed labeling & falsified racial identity, the word must be removed, to protect our nation, our globe, & our children in schools.

This is not optional, the longer the word sits in dictionarys and resources the psychological oppression seeps into both sides of the racial gamut. The Black Society fears for their safety & would rather side with the comfort of the disregard as a comedic filter, laughing it off. While the distain generated in sociology holds a sharp edge to the corporate structure, subconsciously eliciting the definition and feelings of “Blackmail” upon the rings of management as they climb through the hierarchy of leadership, all the while undermining the entire Black Male population in the process. Do you see what I am saying?

This is exactly like the Harvard Law School’s Crest that was changed in 2016, shielding itself behind the very images that depicted historical racial oppression, & beneath that what do we find? Sticks & stones…& words…. If they let the word “Blackmail” just sit in the English language, fearing its definition & simultaneously imposing the language onto the Black Male population, without the psychological mindfulness to redact it, than the cost will look like negligence of the highest kind later on in life. Every single minute counted when they changed the Harvard Law School Shield in 2016. If all Justice Departments in Educational fields continue to teach the word as it stands today, then they only add to the collective unconscious biases of the white supremacy idealisms that have been so deeply ingrained within the verbiage of the Old English Language. It’s no one individuals fault but many will fear the definition of the term, and the frailty of its imposing construct will grip all who approach the topic with its effects eliciting the improper distastefulness of social conformity when addressing it, simply because of how long it has been widely in use. We cannot let this happen. We cannot continue passively milking our Language Arts at the folly of inaction or the fear of admitting that we had been oblivious to the truth of our very own words that had protected us.

Think about Africa too, how much the physical continent can add in global value simply by not having the English language imposing subconscious phonetic labels. Popular words have been completely changed simply out of the recognition of conflicting substrates, look at Türkiye a few months ago, they changed the entire country’s national name because it conflicted with a bird that is also being oppressed.

https://www.npr.org/2022/06/03/1102841197/turkey-changes-its-official-name-to-turkiye

“to dissociate the country's name from the bird that traditionally appears on American dining tables at Thanksgiving” That is how clear this is topic of redaction is, this is what freeing the people in 2022 looks like. Black Males are being Jailed on a daily basis because of the words they had been associated with from birth, that is not okay. They deserve freedom from the thesauri that misdirected all of that bitter injustice centuries ago. The reciprocation must stop here & now.

-Thank you

7/24/22 Ps. I messaged the majority of the Law School faculty at Harvard, NAACP, my local senators, College News centers at over 100 universities, Linguistics Universities multinationally, & over 1000 Professors in the field of law at the top ranking Ivy League Schools, to so do not let them loose hope or stay quiet about this while atrocities are being committed at the hand of disempowered lexicographers or legal bureaucracy. This is as powerful as a statement made by Martin Luther King in 2022. This is the next step in racial Justice & equality. We need the public involvement, people taking about this, & we need the support of all people & all colors. Please if you have a moment CC and advance this message to 10+ Additional People.

——————-

The History of the term ‘Blackmail’ -

We must be more objective & mindful of the systemic racism within the etymological roots of the social Justice system today. In history the term ‘Blackmail’ was a tribute paid by farmers along the border of Scotland and England to freebooters for protection from their raids. These were farmers, plantation owners.

The History of Scotland & Slavery

https://www.blackhistorymonth.org.uk/article/section/history-of-slavery/scotland-and-slavery/

This was also in the 16th century, when the term blackmail first began being used, where the estimated literacy rate was only 16%, with the proportion of literate women as low as one in ten. Consider the implications of the trade “items” in use at the time, & the types of exchanges taking place. The “mail” in the word meant “tribute, rent” but for the illiterate the word served its purposes. Money was not simply legal tender in history, money was people, money was slaves.

We must recognize now that completely “educated” institutions are directly connected to the realities of history & we must protect ourselves by first acknowledging the lingering effects of that misfortune. Look at Harvard.

https://legacyofslavery.harvard.edu

& look at Princeton linguistics, directly confronting the topic of racism openly.

https://linguistics.princeton.edu

——————-

The Lingering Psychological Effects -

Even though slavery is now outlawed, the psychology of the language of that era is still deeply ingrained within the collective human psyche. The practice of the protections enacted on behalf of the social Justice system today, protecting individuals from the modern term “blackmail”, are mimicking the behaviors that were once associated with the psycholinguistics of the behaviors of that specific time period. In 16th century Scotland & England, when the term was first being used among people with significantly lower literacy rates. This protection is in turn eliciting the subconscious behavior identified in “blackmail”, as it is currently defined, still bound as a deterrent against thievery, & is exuding the false ideals of that slavery with the time period removed. As in the protections of the language were built around a socioeconomic system of racial oppression, operating within the confines of farmers, thieves, openly acknowledged slave trade & a greater majority of illiteracy. Simply put, the term “blackmail” fit the uses of the time period, it was a management technique, to be oppressive to black males, to gain advantages through the spoken language, through slave trade industries economically & that part of the ingrained psychology has not changed even though the definition of the word has.

Can universities see all the colleges you have attended?

I went to school at one community college from 2013-2016. I took some Gen Ed classes but withdrew from/failed many classes. I was 18-21 at the time. Frankly, I was immature and not ready for college and didn’t care. Well in January of this year, I enrolled in another community college for Medical Assisting. I have only taken three classes thus far but have a 4.0 GPA. I was thinking about possibly going into the nursing program and become an RN. However I want to get a BSN and possibly be a NP which means I have to transfer to a university. I did not tell the current college I’m at that I attended another college. If I eventually transfer to university, will they find out about the first community college I attended? I know it was wrong to lie but I just wanted a clean slate. I have never used financial aid.

Should I Go Back To Traditional School or Stay in Online School?

My parents are saying it's my choice on what I want to do (I am currently a highschool sophomore going into my junior year for the new school year) but I'm not sure on what choice to make. I am going to traditional college after high school for sure but I'm not sure if I want to go back to a traditional school after 2 years of not being there. I'm already used to online school because it's easier for me and I could go at my own pace however I would like to go to traditional school also so I could see the teachers face-to-face and have interactive class time.

should I just wait til college or go back to traditional school and finish my 2 years there?

Why isn't critical thinking taught it schools?

I'm seeing so many impressionable kids getting manipulated by gurus like Andrew Tate on internet and I'm thinking that maybe teaching them how to think critically would help. Teaching them logical fallacies, cognitive biases, scientific method, logic, empirical facts etc...

How would you like to discuss STEM with like-minded people on the internet?

Discussing what we know increases our knowledge. We enjoy discussing topics that fascinate us. Though sometimes we don't have anyone like-minded to discuss with. How about having an Omegle-like site but for discussing anything Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics?

What is it about retaking a class that makes it so much easier? What lessons can we take from this when designing classes?

Whenever I've had to retake a college course, after withdrawing or failing it, the second time around is so much easier to understand. I think it has to do with the better understanding of class expectations, knowing why each concept will be important and how it will be used. Have you experienced this before? I wonder how we can use this insight to improve education.

Unpopular Opinion: some people aren't in it for the kids.

I've noticed that many of my colleagues, especially the verbal, self-praising ones, only teach because it's a form of appraisal, validation, and fame. They get to live out their narcissistic martyr complex, and it's honestly disgusting. Using the kids and their parents to boost their egos when really, in the classroom, the teacher isn't teaching; they're talking about themselves and putting on a drama for the students to oooo and aaawwww over. These are the same people who are confused as to why they never get picked to move up. Beeeecaaause you're not a good teacher. And you're also not a team player. But I'm not going to tell you that because it'll only feed your martyrdom and fuel your self pitying fire.

I do not work in Education but I was wondering how to remedy income inequality in Higher Education

To tell you about myself, I grew up in a family making roughly 30k a year, from Boston,MA , but attended Weston High, which is a top suburban district under a diversity program.

I attended Boston U for 2 years before transferring to GA Tech, financial aid covered tuition, but I was still on the hook for room+dining+fees. At BU, I worked in the dining hall which cut the 3,000 out and so I took out loans for the 10,000 for the fees+housing. At GA Tech, same thing, did have jobs that helped pay some of my housing +dining+fees. So, I finished undergrad roughly 30k in debt and have since paid it off.

Now that I am approaching 30, I was a computer science major, graduated cum laude too, I am making 140k a year on top of my investments and other side hustles.

The problem is even though I feel very comfortable with my salary, I looked into the cost of education.

I would be expected to pay 35k a year towards my kids tuition according to an EFC calculation, and that does not include housing +dining+fees, so if my kids went to a private school like BU, it would cost 53,000. I cannot afford that tbh, unless I start saving now. The scary thing is full price is 80,000 dollars.

I do not understand why private universities cost so much in this country.

I look into websites such as percentages of schools that are from the 1 percent, and the IVYS plus many other top privates are on top.

I'll give a story, my freshman year roommate was a kid from suburban Boston who had a scholarship to attend BU, so he was actually paying only 12k despite being rich,he was RIDICULOSLY SMART though, his family had 3 houses. A house in the suburbs, one seaside in Cape Cod, and another they rented out, I'm not sure where. I talked to him and his dad was an investment banker making around 400k ,ten years ago , whereas my family was not even making 1/11th of that. Talking to him, he always said stuff about how there are people even wealthier than him. He said his family was "comfortable" but would call his upbringing "upper middle class". He said a significant number of kids at BU were in his wealth range and a percentage were wealthier. He went to a boarding school where he says his family was on the lower end of the wealth spectrum, and many kids from his high school went IVY or to Amherst, Williams, Tufts, Middlebury, and Bowdoin. He said 100 percent went to college, and his class of 100 sent 11 kids IVY, plus 3 to UChicago, 1 to Stamford, 4 to Georgetown, 2 each to Rice, Duke, and Vanderbilt, and 4 to Northwestern. That is 29 percent of the high school going to top schools and another 24 percent went NESCAC, and many of the rest went to the Boston 3 (NEU, BC, BU) or NYU, so effectively 80 percent of his grade he said went to prestigious schools.

My public high school in Boston I was supposed to go to, a high percentage didn't even go to college, maybe 35 percent, 25 percent went to community college, 30 percent went to the lower tier MA state schools (Salem State, Fitchburg State, Framingham State) and 9 percent went to the UMass system (Amherst, Lowell, Boston, Dartmouth) and 1 percent to others.

My suburban district, 100 percent went to college, with a small percentage going IVY, I think 8 out of 170 kids in my class, and another 10 going to other top schools, with many students we had 14 kids in my grade go to BU, 13 to NEU, 12 to BC, 10 to Babson. I would say half my high school class went to decent schools.

How can we fix the discrepancy so all three high schools match each other is my question?

Leaving the classroom

Hi! I have been an elementary Special Education teacher for 3.5 years now and I’m definitely already burnt out. My school takes advantage of me and I’m always with the toughest kids and parents because I’m “good at it.” I plan on putting in for a transfer once I have tenure, but I’ve already decided I don’t want to stay in the classroom for too long. I want to look into working in Ed tech but I know it’s so broad! How do you figure out what type of job is good for yourself to transition into? I’ve listened to some podcasts and read up on different positions but I’m just feeling overwhelmed.

Unhappy with educational career (uk)

Hello to everyone reading this,

I’d like to ask for some advice on going to university with my current a level grades. I basically messed them up due to severe mental health issues. I did not fail any of them but I did get low grades and barely passed. I did law, politics and history and was going to do law but changed my mind last minute and went for psychology instead. I already struggled with applying to universities as I did not take science based subjects. I accepted a place into UEL but I’m not happy with it. I took a gap year to “think on it” but to be honest I’ve been working full time and pushed it away to the back of my mind. It just hit me tonight; I am not happy with the university I’m going to. I see it as embarrassing as I am not going to a prestigious university as intended. I’ve always loved school and had good grades but messed up my exams so bad because I thought I wouldn’t be alive soon anyways.

Now I am unsure of what to do. Should I retake a levels ? Is it worth it? Should I stick to my current uni and do my postgraduate elsewhere? Or should I try apply through clearing with what I have?

If it helps I got CDD and worked in special needs during my gap year, I also did some CPD courses.

Thanks :)

Does it make sense to create a course to teach k12 kids about entrepreneurship, financial literacy, leadership, etc?

I've been tasked with creating courses for K12 kids to teach them about entrepreneurship, financial literacy, leadership, web3, etc.

However, is this really what kids need when they are in K12? Can they benefit from these courses?

A lot of the concepts may not make sense to someone who

- hasn't had a job

- doesn't earn

- can't negotiate

- doesn't understand the market

- cannot make deals (legally)

to name a few...

There are already such offerings in the market and they are all doing well. Well, at least on the outside, the VC's want more. But do they create real impact on the students?

As Tim Ferris once said. Only learn something when you're ready to apply it. Otherwise, you're going to learn it once and then have to go through it again when you're ready.

Kids are most probably not ready to apply their learnings, so why all the hype?

Help me understand, o wise crowd!

Am I not smart enough for a second degree?

In Canada, if relevant. I graduated from a bachelor of science a few years ago and majored in psychology. In my last year I took classes that involved programming and developed a big interest in it and decided to possibly further my studies in that. I decided i wanted to pursue a second degree and major in comp sci and move onto my masters and so on. I have been self-teaching since and have been working full time in the tech industry, but I have been waitlisted every time I’ve applied. When I call they say students applying in from high school will have priority but I feel as though so many people around me have a second or third degree and there must be something I’m doing wrong. I’ve even began to look into schools in different countries, but that’s not ideal to me besides the experience itself. Any insight would be great please

Would I waste my time with an associates in English or Liberal Arts?

I am 31. I graduated high school in 2009, and did what was expected of me: I immediately went to university that following fall semester. I was set on being a German major with a journalism degree (people attempted to tell me to do it vice versa, stubborn 18 year old me said no, lol). Long story short, I changed my major a few times, and flunked out. I realize now it was the undiagnosed ADHD and possibly depression. I digress, I tried again, flunked out again. At 29, after my tech job closed, I had the random idea of going to cosmetology school... working at a salon (with women twice my age who bullied me), I realized that career was not for me.

I worked at a law firm for a year and a half as an IT assistant, and did enjoy it. I'm good at IT, but it's certainty not a passion or anything. My position was terminated due to cut backs, so now I've been trying to decide what I want to do next.

I've always felt ashamed I didn't finish college, even though I know I shouldn't, it's the norm from what I've seen. I could probably easily get another help desk type job, so I'm not concerned with jobs, but... I was looking at the two local community colleges here, and I have a passion for creative writing, arts, and languages. So now I wonder if I would be wasting my time with an Associates Degree in English or LA, or if I should just suck it up and be realistic and either: give up the idea of college, or do something with IT/computers since that's what I have experience in.

I don't know if I'd follow up with a bachelor's degree. At this point, I think I just want to be proud of myself for finishing some type of schooling besides high school.

Affordable Software for scheduling and administration of a online university

Hello all,

I am a student who was tasked with creating mock data for a fake university as a project. The problem is we have no background in educational technology, I am looking for an affordable software that will let me create and manage schedules, including data. The components of this task is to create 1. A master schedule for one year 2. A semester schedule of classes being taught with class, professor and student information. 3. A feature to manage student history data, as in classes they have yet to take or have taken. Each student has four years worth of data. This feature must extend to instructors as well. 4. Data exporting: I am looking for a way to export this data to excel or Google docs so I can upload it to a database. This is the last requirement.

If there is no individual or affordable software that has these features alternatives are appreciated.

Thanks!

Plan ahead: how to prepare a 8yr old to change school when moving from Germany to the US?

We plan to relocate to the West Coast, likely to WA next August / September. Certainly would like to wait till my daughter finishes her 2nd year in ground school here in Germany.

So the big question is: how to prepare for such a move? I just can hope we have Redditors here who moved with family from Europe to the US and could provide helpful tricks and tips to have this transition as smooth as possible.

Also if this sub is a wrong choice, please let me know, education sounded like a good choice to have a discussion.

Thank you!

About to dropout from university for the second time. Advice?

I dropped out of music school a year and a half ago which I attended for three years, had one to go. Then I had a year where I was severely depressed and struggled with all sorts of mental issues. Didn't do anything for months other than sulk in depression, paranoia and anxiety. I dropped out for those reasons btw. Got better after about 8 months, decided to do something other than, well, nothing. Got a job at a call center, hated it and realized I needed to do something else in order to advance in life. I didn't want to stay stuck at that dead end job. I started up picking skills, worked at a phone repair shop where I learned tons about fixing electronics. Started a coding bootcamp (100Devs) and started to feel like I was going somewhere. My parents were eager for me to get my life back on track and suggested to try university for computer science, which I agreed to. I started attending online university for computer science in February, but it's crap and I haven't learned anything related to computers yet. I was really enjoying the 100Devs course and even got a few paid gigs. But sometimes I still get depression dips, and I struggle with being constant with my workflow and energy. Did a mediocre job with those gigs, but got them done. Right now I am feeling depressed, and I stopped doing the coursework (which is 100% of the grade) for online uni. I am most likely going to drop out for the second time. The reasons:

  1. I am feeling depressed. Can't muster up energy to do work.
  2. I hate the subjects. I know I should be more mature and just work through it, but, look at reason 1.
  3. The subjects so far have had nothing to do with what I want to learn. Some of them were mildly interesting but objectively I don't think I'm learning anything. It's just a lot of rinse and repeat. Really really bored at online uni, and because it's online, I don't even get the benefit of making friends and hanging out or get stimulated socially.
  4. For reason 3 I don't think it's worth paying for. Maybe it will ramp up at some point but right now I'm sure to fail the current subjects, and I don't think I want to continue.
  5. I feel stuck. My routine makes me feel like I'm getting nowhere. A lot of my friends are graduating and getting jobs that get paid really really well right out of uni and I'm stuck at my parents'.

These are the ones at the top of my head. I love my parents and I thank them a lot for helping me through such a hard time when I dropped out the first time. They've offered me nothing but love and understanding. I can't help but think I'm letting them down again. My mom says I should finish what I start and honestly it is a true problem. I haven't finished a process other than high school I suppose. I'm frustrated and sort of depressed. Meds aren't working as they used to I think.

Here's the thing: what if I'm making a huge mistake? Or what if I'm making a great step forward? I always hated school, it bores me out of my mind. I find it tedious and would much rather learn by doing. That's why I enjoyed 100Devs so much! I know I'd like to work with computers, and live a comfortable life, save up for a house and make music on the side. I'm having a really hard time with this whole ordeal, I think about it nonstop. 'What do I do? What do I do?', always playing chess in my head with my situation. So far I can't find a good solution. Honestly, I don't know what to do. There's OSSU, a free online university curriculuum for learning everything you'd learn at a BA for Computer Science. I'm looking into it and it seems enticing, especially because it's free and high quality. But I'd be pretty much the same situation as online uni, where I have no way of making connections.

In addition to everything, my mom was just in the hospital for a kidney infection and I'm getting worried that money might be an issue in the near future, since they found other things going on with her. I'd like to help out with money, since they've always helped me and I just want my mom to be ok. I'm thinking, maybe I should train to get a job in tech and move from there, but I'm scared honestly. I'm not prepared for any of this.

Thanks for reading this long ramble about my situation. You're very kind.

TLDR: Title, wanna work in tech, unsure of what to do.

“A real revolution cannot be brought about by a change of power” – The Rojava education system

SOURCE

With the Rojava revolution a new education system was established in North East Syria. Today, there are not only Arabic schools in the region, but also Kurdish and Aramaic ones. Could you tell us what the school system is like? How successful is the education system and with what difficulties do you have to deal with?

Every person and every child should have the right to receive education in his or her mother tongue. We are trying to realize this right and currently offer schooling in three languages: Kurdish, Arabic and Aramaic. In the first three years, all school subjects are taught only in the respective mother tongue. From the 3rd grade onward, the children learn another language of the local population, such as Kurdish, Arabic or Aramaic. From the 5th grade, they can then choose a third language. In most cases, English is chosen.

Our education system works well and so far we have not had any major problems due to multilingualism. However, in rural areas it is sometimes difficult to find teachers of the native languages for all school subjects, including physics, chemistry and mathematics. Due to the attacks and financial problems, many people fled, including teachers from rural areas. Another difficulty is finding Kurdish teachers for native Arabic speakers who want to learn Kurdish as a second language and live in areas where there are just few Kurds.

One of the biggest problems of the education system is that we lack Kurdish textbooks and dictionaries, especially for the subjects of mathematics, physics, chemistry, geography and philosophy. Novels, history books and poems, on the other hand, are plentiful. For a good education in Kurdish, we need thousands of dictionaries and textbooks. In this challenge, our school system urgently needs outside support.

The difficult economic situation and the embargo are also reflected in the education sector. Because of this, it is enormously difficult to provide equipment needed for good teaching, such as computers, projectors, but also laboratories. Even the power supply in the schools can sometimes become a problem.

In addition, we have a shortage of school buildings. We also need to renovate the existing schools so that the children can be taught in safe and child-friendly rooms.

Do you know how many schools, students and teachers currently exist in North East Syria?

The current numbers (as of May 2022) are as follows: There is a total of 4,356 schools, 838,086 students, and 39,696 employees in the education system in all North East Syria.

The Self-Government of North East Syria consists of seven regions, namely Cizîr (Jazira), Firat (Euphrates), Efrîn (Afrin), Tebqa (Tabqa), Reqqa (ar-Raqqa), Minbic (Manbij) and Dêrazor (Deir ez-Zor). Each region has its own Education Council, which is responsible for education in the region. The Education Council is also responsible for building new schools and renovating and refurbishing old ones.

In the regime’s schools the lessons were only taught in Arabic. You have established a multilingual school system. What other differences are there between your school system and the regime’s?

Our education system is multilingual. Education in the mother tongue is the most important pillar of our system. Our goals are: Promoting democracy in society, raising conciseness for human rights and gender equality and promoting the cultures and languages of the people in the region. We work against religious extremism and promote peace, acceptance and tolerance between and within religious communities. For this reason, children are taught about all religions from 9th grade. The school management is democratic. Decisions are made together with children and their parents.

The education system of the Assad regime’s is based solely on Arabic and promotes only Arab-Islamic culture. Content is only taught from a Syrian Arab perspective. As a result, members of other ethnic and religious groups are discriminated and assimilated. The Assad regime’s political system is centralist, and the nationalist Baath Party makes all decisions alone.

Universities have also been established in North East Syria. Can you tell us something about the number of universities and the subjects that are taught there?

We originally had four universities, but Efrîn University was closed after the Turkish occupation. The other three universities are called Rojava University, Kobanê University and Şerq University. These universities were opened in 2016, 2017 and 2020 and are in the cities of Qamişlo, Kobanê and Reqqa. According to our most current knowledge, the following courses of study can be taken at the three universities: Agricultural Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Petrochemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Ecology, Medicine, Kurdish Language and Literature, Arabic Language and Literature. For the teaching degree program, there are the following subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, History, Biology, and Elementary Education. In addition, there are the following faculties and institutes: the Faculty of Religious Studies, Faculty of Fine Arts, Institute of Translation Studies (English), Institute of Finance, Institute of Civil Engineering and Institute of Mechatronics (3 years). And of course, there is the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Jineolojî course at the Rojava University in Qamişlo.

In addition to the universities and schools, there are many academies in North East Syria. Which role do they play? What is taught in them and who can participate in the education?

A wide variety of academies have been established in North East Syria. On the one hand, there are the Academies for a Democratic Society. These are open to society, especially to people who are active in the self-governing structures. There are also autonomous women’s academies and for example, academies specifically for teachers. This is because all teachers attend many different pedagogical, didactic and society-related courses. The purpose of the society-related courses is to build democratic consciousness among teachers. These courses are very intensive and usually last between from 30 to 45 days.

The need for a “mental revolution” is often heard in North East Syria. Education plays an important role in this. Can you tell us what exactly you mean by “mental revolution” and what it is supposed to achieve?

A real revolution cannot be achieved simply by changing power or overthrowing someone in power. From our point of view, revolution means liberation from a nationalistic and hierarchical rule and ending the conditions that make such a rule possible. A revolution is successful when a peaceful, free and democratic system is established. This is not easy because the ideology and culture that the Syrian people have grown up with for decades is characterized by racism, sexism, islamism, cultural and linguistic racism. This has established an understanding that sees diversity as a threat to cohesion and uniformity as normality in society. Schools in regime-controlled areas have been and continue to be like factories for assimilation and brainwashing of the Syrian population. Moreover, the regime uses textbooks as a tool to continue its rule and Arabize all people in Syria. The regime’s decades-old education system is one of the main reasons of the Syrian brutal civil war that has lasted since 2011.

That is why we need an intellectual revolution. In self-government, especially in education, we are fighting for a democratic culture, a multicultural, multilingual society, the defense of women’s rights and freedom, gender equality, freedom of religion and belief. And our struggle against the old mentality and for a peaceful, free and democratic life continues.

Any resource on all education requirements from K to 12th grade?

I have a toddler that will start preK soon. We’re very pro-active parents when it comes to teaching our kids & we plan to keep that going and do our part to make sure our kids reach their maximum potential academically (ie go to Ivy League if they wanted to) or graduate a year or two early. or not, it’s up to them, but we do want them to have that choice academically.

I feel a big part of this is being on top of their education, making sure they go to a good school, etc But I’m not sure how as a parent I can keep track of progress compared if we’re missing a big picture of their educational requirements. So I guess my question is:

Is there a list or roadmap somewhere of everything a kid has to complete to get from K to graduate high school?

How would you go about graduating high school years early?

Obviously it would require planning before high school, right?

I read someone took summer classes all the time, but how do you plan for that? What classes do you take? How do schools keep track of where you’re at and how much you have left to graduate if say you’re starting at 6th-8th grade?

I am confused where should I continue my education. US? Uk? Canada?Australia? I would appreciate opinions.

Hi. ( it is very complicated case and hope I donät confuse anyone)

As a Swedish citizen I could have gotten free education in Sweden but I really wanted to get my bachelor's degree in English while there were not many in Sweden, and I didn't want to spent the rest of my life in Cold and dark country. So, I studied 73 credits at American community college until I realized there were not many options to transfer to a 4 years degree university for my major (unbelievable) and those which offered were cost me a leg and hand. So, even though I got accepted into one of them and received scholarship (10k ), I couldn't afford.

As a side note my GPA (3.81)

Anyways, I came back and ever since I am confused to what to do. Whether to change my major so that I have more options , choose to start over in Europe, or Uk, or Australia.

If I discontinue American education , all the money I spent is going to waste. (money was loan and aid from Swedish government )

Here are my options:

1- change my major to have more options in the Us. (to avoid losing money, and fulfill prerequisite I could study by myself for CLEP and then transfer to one of the cheaper universities )

2-Forget about the Us and choose between UK, Canada, Australia hoping they would recognize some of my credits( I have lived in Australia and Canada before, and visited Uk)

3- Transfer to University of the People (US) which is nationally recognized and not regionally and is fully online ( this is the fastest track to obtain my degree but I have a feeling it may be affecting to where I apply for masters later or would appear low value)

4- Apply to Open University (fully online , Uk). ( same downside I mentioned for point 3)

5- Or skip everything, just go back to swedish university. (I know I am going to hate it)

Is makeup a professional must for women?

I've been promoted to assistant principal, and this means I'll have to upgrade my look. I look young (as admin go, I am young) and am often called "baby," "sweetheart," "honey," etc. by older women--parents and colleagues. I'm worried that makeup will only add to my "young" look, like I'm trying to be connected to the kids or something, but I'm afraid I look innocent and frumpy without makeup. What to do???

Is it possible to get records from my old school guidance counselor?

Hi, I hope it's ok to post this here but I'm not sure where to ask.

I've been seeing new people for help with my mental health lately, and been especially looking back at my mental health as a child for a better understanding of my brain and my possible mental illnesses.

When I was in elementary school I saw the guidance counselor weekly for four years (grades 1-4). I think it would be really helpful for me and my mental health team to be able to see the records/notes from my old counselor. I'm just not sure if I'd be able to do that now that I'm an adult, or how I would go about it. If anyone has any idea if/how I can do this it'd be very appreciated!

Education

Hi I've got a question because it seems to be that the only part of your education that is really important is college university education. So according to rankings that I've seen about standard of living and social Progress, they take into account education but they're only interested in access to advanced education so my question Is college university the most important stage of education? Because they don't ask if the citizens of x country finished elementary school or high school the only thing that really matters is advanced education.

Charter school advocates: how do you respond to criticisms?

I’m an educator at a public school and generally happy. My conservative family and I often get into unproductive debates about “school choice”, etc. Ultimately, they say I just like traditional schools because I’m selfish and like having the teachers’ union holding power over students’ education. That’s fine; I probably am biased and I know teachers’ unions are far from perfect and blameless.

My main criticisms of charters are the usual ones: they have much more leeway to kick students out who don’t follow the model. Additionally, they don’t have to place and educate high need students, but can simply say they can’t serve them. I spent a year at a charter and was in the same room when my coworker attempted to bar a student from attending because his IEP listed a genetically-linked syndrome. (Yes, I stood up for the student attending; the syndrome has a range of impact and his was pretty minor.) There’s no way my current school would ever do this. Even the KIPP schools, an oft-cited charter success story, have received criticism for high rates of attrition, with one website stating that 60/100 students leave or are kicked out (I think it was an anti-charter site, to be fair). You see the problem: charter schools can consolidate kids with resources, while public schools are there to absorb kids who don’t. Must be nice!

When I point this out, my dad doesn’t see any issue. He’s old school, racist, doesn’t believe privilege is a thing. If kids with behavioral issues are siloed until they turn 18 and head to jail, he’s fine with that. So he’s actually a pretty terrible advocate for charters.

So I’d like to hear from someone more knowledgeable: at charter proponents fine with the neediest kids with the lowest parental/financial/behavioral resources simply getting relegated to public schools?

We will soon have the first 4 year graduates of the pandemic .

How do you think they will do in the real world ? There are so many degrees that have been earned remotely, I think a lot of them are Ill prepared for actual employment in the field . As an educator I know they don’t have nearly the accountability , or time management skills . Just working from home at your own pace to complete a task won’t cut it . Time is money . Duties need to be taken care of in a timely manner , not when you decide it’s time to work . You need to clock in no matter how your job is preformed . Then there are jobs that require you be there in person .

Public school says program that they never gave information about is full…

Posted this in Parenting sub but wondering what Education sub might say. This is in USA.

We enrolled our 2nd born child for kindergarten to start in the fall. Our oldest goes to the same school but has special needs (with IEP). We called mid-Spring and asked about kindergarten enrollment the office and registrar did not know when enrollment would open because no one had even asked yet. When we got the information we marked our calendar and enrolled on the first day it opened and RSVP’d for a kindergarten roundup event they did in May. We took her to that and they checked off that we had submitted needed paperwork and asked her a few questions I guess just to see level at with numbers and alphabet etc.

Just recently I learned from a neighbor that the school has a dual language program where the kids are taught in another language common in our area 50/50 with English. Different from bilingual which is for kids who don’t know/need help learning English. We had never heard of this program despite having an older child already at the school and enrolling our 2nd child right at enrollment and taking attending the kindergarten event. It was never mentioned or flyers given out or anything. The neighbor who told me has two older children in the program and she is very involved in the school’s PTO so I’m not sure if only PTO parents get told maybe to get first dibs which leads me to..

We inquired about the program and while the district website says the application deadline has not yet passed, they said the school we are zoned to is at capacity and there is a waitlist. But it’s not advertised.
Kids can also only join as entering kindergarteners so we can’t just apply for next year. When we emailed the program coordinator listed online we got no reply until we emailed again with some other people CC’d (principal, registrar) which I only did because my husband wrote the first email and didn’t even include what school we are zoned to and the program director is for the entire district so I fwd it and did “forwarding to add A and B” etc. Then we got a reply within a few hours saying unfortunately it’s full.

This is a public school so the taxes we pay are funding this program that they are saying our child can’t join because it’s full despite them not telling people about it when they register their kids for kindergarten even though kids can only join it when they’re entering kindergarten. Does anyone have any advice about how we can escalate this because even if they legitimately don’t have space I feel like it’s not right that they don’t tell families enrolling like it’s some need to know program when the information should be given to everyone. Also the fact we were never told about it for our older child who has special needs but IS in general education classes so technically we could have at least applied to see if he could do it. And then no information this time either.

Can we argue this or do something to make sure this doesn’t keep happening to other families?

Studying in Bristol as a Kazakhstani student

Hello to all Reddit users! I have a very difficult choice ahead of me, which will significantly affect my future, therefore I would like to know the opinion of other people on that matter. It is about where I will get my higher education. I am a graduate of a school in Kazakhstan, but I am considering studying at a British university. At the beginning of this year, I applied to several British universities and some of them decided to accept me. My choice fell on the University of Bristol as it is highly regarded in the UK and my family will be able to cover the tuition fees. Studying in the UK involves a huge risk, as it requires great financial resources (about 35K dollars per year for tuition and living expenses, which is a lot for a middle-class family in Kazakhstan). My family will have to sell some of its property and I will have to cherish every penny, being in another country. I have no worries regarding the difficulty of studying at the university. However, I am afraid that as a result of my stay in the UK, I will not be able to reach significant success in my career path. I am going to study in MEng (Electrical Engineering) program. My main goal is to stay in the UK after graduation and get a decent job that would justify the cost of my higher education. How realistic is this for an international student? Should I take this risk? Thanks in advance for your time! :)

My school isn’t giving me options to make up credits. What can I do?

I’ve missed a lot of school due to medical issues and when I brought up making up the credits to my school, they told me that there is no point in even trying. I’m probably about a year behind on credits. I’ve asked if I can repeat a year and they said that they don’t do that. I’ve asked if there are any programs i can join to make them up, and they said no. What can I do?

I don't have IELTS yet but my test is in 5 days, English isn'ty first language but I'm pretty good in it so Ik ielts won't be a problem.

Problem is I haven't yet found a single scholarship that is legit [except for the Japanese, Romanian and S-Korean] but those are past the deadline.

I have a high school diploma [95.65/10]) which equals to about [3.78/4.00]

I don't mind studying in any language as long as there's at least 6 months to study the language (except arabic and english <ready for rn> )

If any of you would be so kind to asvise me with a University with a good scholarship Or a Good general scholarship Or at least a university that would accept me as a SYRIAN :(

(I can't afford to pay back loans nor pay those INTIAL fees)

Also note that even if I get a scholarship I have to convince said country to give me the visa bc Syrian

Anything helps as long it's a commonly needed skill in work/real life such as programming, management, statistics, psychology, accounting and even stuff like nutrition and PE could help me out.

Graduation requirements

I think back to my Trig teacher Mr. Bruce Ritter in 1987. Specifically, he asked “What do you have to know to graduate 8th grade?” He went on to explain that kids came into high school not even knowing how to work with fractions and decimals. My question to you is, what knowledge and skills do YOU think a person needs to demonstrate in order to graduate 8th or 12th grade? I have several ideas already, but I’d like to see your suggestions before I share mine.

Like, have you ever seen students who know that if "everyone" misinterpreted the assignment instructions, DHs or administrators would take that as proof the instructions were unclear, and so that if everyone "misinterprets" them in the same way, none of them have to actually do as much schoolwork as they would if they didn't collude?

Even after not completeing a degree in computer application, i dont know which career to follow or what to study.

With great regret and sadness im writing this. After ive passed out highschool, joined computer application degree. Completed and passed every single paper except one maths paper. Its been 3 years since that. Ive tried attending it 2 more times, due to my laziness, couldnt pass the test. Now im completely out of tough with the subject. Not only that, ive lost my intrest in learning the subject. Due to my laziness and ignorance, i was too ashamed to ask my parents to spend money and try a new career. But now its been 3 years past that and im still without a degree and career. My family talked to me and said that they are supportive and will help me if i need financial help. Im willing to try once more as a last shot. And ill give my complete effort for it. But still i dont know which subject to apply and what career will be waiting for me. I dont know where to ask help and what to do. As a person who knows everything about things that dont matter in my life, im here, asking for help from my fellow brothers and sisters. Help me find a way. If you feel like adding any suggestions, please. Help me. It would be of great value to me.

The primary and secondary education system will collapse in 10 years in Hungary

The first chart shows the age groups of teachers and as you can see there's no supply of young teachers as the salaries are extremely low - working at a McDo pays more, working almost anywhere else pays more - and the government doesn't want to solve this problem especially now as the recession is coming and they are as corrupt as they can be.

The teachers protested many times but it seems like there's no solidarity from the wider population, there's not much pressure on the government.

I'm trying to figure out how parents with school age children will react when they see the extreme quality drop at schools. Already 10-20% of classes are held by teachers who officially could only teach a different subject and in smaller cities villages it's rather 20-30%.

We've already moved to the UK years ago and this was one of the main reasons. But of course it doesn't work at scale.

What do you think: -How will society/parents react? -is there a potential solution that you can think of?

I know these are very difficult questions but please share anything that pops into your mind.

I'm currently undertaking a teaching qualification as an unqualified teacher who has been teaching abroad for a number of years.

As the title suggests, I'm a little confused by how I can display my subject knowledge and provide a self-audit.

I assume for subject knowledge, I can talk about my formal educational background in that subject? What it taught me?

I guess a self-audit is very similar to a self-assessment. How should I go about explaining and demonstrating some of my weak points that I feel I have short-comings in?

Many thanks!

I have no degree, and I want to take a course online for international business.

Hi, my situation is a little strange thanks to my life being strange, and I'm hoping to get some advice.

I have a GED, and I'm looking to improve myself even if just a little, but I don't know how to go about it.

I'm interested in looking for an online school to earn some credit for international business, but I'm not looking to go back to school fulltime, because I have work, and I can't take the stress of doing both simultaneously.

As for why international business, this is where my strange life comes in. I already have real world experience in international business without any degree. My cousin told me about this school (Ashford University) where he took an international business course. He says it's great and not stressful and that people with this degree's biggest problem is getting experience, something that I wouldn't have to worry about. I tried to apply, but for some reason the school is not accepted in NY state. I was wondering if anyone know any decent schools that offer online courses on international business?

I live in NY and normally I can research CUNY, but since I only have a GED, I can only go to community college. They don't seem to offer anything for international business though, but I will research a bit more with them. I figure while I research, Reddit can also give me some options to look into.

Thanks.

How much does your US public school district spend per high school student on textbooks (print +digital)/student/year?

I'm having trouble figuring out what most high school students cost/yr for print + digital textbooks. The closes estimate I can find for my local district says "$75/adm." I'm not sure what "adm" stands for. Is it/student/year? Thanks!

Bcomm to sciences

Hello,

I completed my bcomm as an accounting major in 2019 and have been working in the field since that time. I however have realized that I hate accounting and the business world and see my friends enjoying careers in the sciences. I am curious if anyone has completed a bcomm and then sciences and how much more work I would need to complete to earn a bachelor of science (mainly geology). Ideally certain credits from my bcomm would transfer over and it would only be a few years if school but I have no idea how it works. Anyone who has gone through this or works for a university and has delt with this before please shine your insight on me!

education is pointless

after high school education is meaningless. mfs will spend at least $100,000 on a degree to work a job that they’ll hate for the rest of their life, all while being paid peanuts.

Writing tips for concluding paragragh

Have been tutoring this non English speaker who’s at her mid forties and dropped off school at an early age. She kind of picked up English from other English speakers but never had learned grammar etc. So far she can read some K2 - K3 material after some preparation. But the main thing is when we come to writing exercise, it’s not easy for her to conclude a writing in general. She tends to jump from one idea to another as if she is chatting. What will be some sort of guideline for her to establish some structure in her writing?

How to achieve perfect grades in high school?

I’m starting high school in a few months and would like to attend Berkeley, Northwest, or Carlton (the top school in my state) for collage. I’m not sure how to achieve perfect grades in high school. In my middle school I was a B- to an A student (they don’t do A+ in the school district I go to) and I want to go to a good school and do something in finance so how do I do it?

I want to become a teacher but I'm kind of scared to

I'm not going to say "I've wanted to be a teacher all my life!" because that's not true, but after having teachers in high school that I could look up to and were supportive of me, I've firmly decided that this is the path I want to take in life. I want to be someone who can show students that learning is fun and rewarding and they they're important, loved, and valued.

But seeing how teachers are treated and hearing about their experiences is terrifying, and it makes me so scared for what this career has in store for me. Recent conversations about arming teachers have me worried; I don't like guns, nor do I trust myself to be able to use them properly and safely. And don't teachers already have a lot of expectations put on them? Is it really a good idea to add more?

I know that managing a classroom isn't easy but I'm scared that I just won't be able to do it. One of my former classmates sexually harassed one of my teachers, in front of the entire class! And this was only just over a year ago! And afterwards, the teacher was expected to be "graceful and respectful" in handling it. I know that my reaction would be far from "graceful" in that situation, and I'm afraid it would cost me my job.

And after the kids, how do I deal with parents? More than a couple of my teachers would get scathing, disrespectful emails and phone calls from parents. Even though they tried to hide it, I could tell how much it affected them. I'm scared I would collapse under that kind of pressure.

On top of that, I'm transgender. Am I going to have parents accuse me of being a predator and a danger to children, as I've heard so many times before? Will I be expected to hide, or even lie about who I am for the comfort of parents and/or administraton? I did that for years, and I don't want to go back to doing it.

I know that the pay for teachers isn't amazing, and that's fine. I'm ready for that. But after all of this, am I not even allowed to advocate for better treatment and pay? I'm supposed to "do it for the kids"? I have to sacrifice and compromise just for an unlivable wage and I'm not even allowed to say anything without being chastised?

I'm not saying that I don't want to become a teacher because of these things, because I still do, and I still will. (And, admittedly, I may be blowing things out of proportion.) I'm going to teach and I'm going to fucking enjoy it, because I know that I can. But I'm still kind of scared.
