The current American political landscape has devolved into egoic position defending rather than honest open discussions about real solutions to real issues. If this trend continues without any intervention, there might be devastating consequences. For this reason, I am here to address what I believe to be the core of our turmoil.
I truly believe that all of this division is from a lack of understanding. Understanding different religions, cultures, philosophies, even art forms. In order to solve this lack of understanding, honest discussions that do not involve egoic positions need to be cultivated, starting in schools.
Now before I propose all the changes to the curriculum, I must say that each class will have a major shift from work towards the discussion. There will still be work that is done, videos to watch, and maybe test to be taken. But there is far too much emphasis on passing the test rather than learning the information for the sake of curiosity. Maybe this is a failure to create an engaging curriculum.
Our mental health is one of the most important aspects of our lives, arguably THE most important aspect. Our entire view of reality stems from our thoughts. Why is this insanely important aspect of life entirely overlooked in school? It should be the core of schooling. Teach us major philosophical ways of thinking from stoicism to Buddhism, to nihilism. Give us assignments asking us how we feel about the views on reality being spoken about. Let's come together and build upon the foundation that has been set for us.
Learn about different psychotherapy techniques, and meditations. Let's talk about a fixed vs growth mindset, allowing kids to understand from a young age that they are capable of almost anything they put their minds to. The key fact in this is to make them understand that failure is a normal part of the growth process. So-called "failure" is often where we learn the most.
This can turn into a real open discussion, from a young age, in late elementary school. The discussion simply has to be engaging. In order to make it engaging, we can relate what we are learning to everyday life.
Getting children used to the idea of discussing topics will build a foundation that they will use throughout their entire lives. Allowing them to see people as people, and not as a certain group. Whether that group is racial, gender, or political, seeing the world in this "deadened" form leads to deep loneliness and confusion. We need to teach children that the world is exactly what it looks like, and not how people like to talk about it.
We need to talk about bullying behavior, why it exists, and how we can handle it. Understanding that other's words are not always true. Gaining a deeper knowing and appreciation of yourself will allow you to trudge through this mud unscathed.
Let's learn about cultures from all around the earth. From history to art, to science and philosophy. If we had a better understanding of the variety of cultures on earth, we may gain a deeper appreciation for each other.
When it comes to drug and sex education, I believe this is the area in dire need of improvement.
In drug education, they blatantly lie to us in order to scare us off of these experiences. They tell us that acid will melt your brain and you will get addicted to ecstasy from the moment you try it. Yes, addiction is a very real issue that needs to be discussed, but lying to us is not the way to do it. Psychedelics have a huge potential in having a lasting positive impact on people's lives. Why is this never said? Why are these plants so overtly demonized? We need people who have actually tried these drugs to come in and talk about their experiences. We need to hear both sides in order to have a better understanding of what these drugs do.
Sweeping this under the rug is no longer possible. People will do drugs regardless of how much you try and scare them away. We need to know how to do them properly, safely, and minimize addictive mindsets. Current rap music is glorifying these substances while schools are demonizing them. The truth is somewhere in the middle.
On the topic of addiction, we need to explain the psychological mechanism behind it. Knowing how addiction affects the brain is an important step in overcoming it. Phone addiction, social media, youtube, tv, all need to be talked about. Students need to feel comfortable sharing their addiction stories.
More on addiction... The sugar problem. Obesity is rampant. We are overfed and lacking real nutrients. Nutrition class needs to be mandatory and engaging.
On sex. Porn addiction has taken men by storm and is leading to a very real and serious issue. People are sexually drained. People are overly stimulated and are abusing their bodies. This throws everything out of whack and can lead to much greater issues. The sexual energy that we have is the most powerful force in the animal kingdom. It literally creates life. When this energy is spent on a phone screen every night, we are drained. Lacking creativity and drive to exercise. This creates a vicious downward spiral. This certainly needs to be discussed especially in high school. There are a lot of dissatisfied women due to this issue. Porn focuses solely on the visual aspect of sex. This fixation leads to a lack of connection with the body and the partner.
Now, taking a huge 180. Let's talk about STEM. The field that got us to the moon, and gave us these insanely small computers. This is real magic. However, STEM in current schools is so disconnected from this awesome reality, that it is incredibly boring to most students. We never get to do engineering until high school or college, and by then, most people already dislike math. People would be much more engaged in learning math if they had a better grasp on the implications of said math. We can literally fly to mars, create self duplicating robots, and make cars that drive themselves.
I could go on about this forever, but I do not want to write a whole book right here. This is just a brief overview of some ideas that have been festering in my mind for a bit.
Please, share your thoughts and ideas. Criticize these ideas in a productive manner and add your own. Thank you everyone, hope we can build a better future for all of us :)
