What solutions are being developed or considered to replace standardized testing?

The way I was taught growing up, it felt like there was more importance given to kids scoring well on tests than on actually learning the material. I felt like most of my time was spent memorizing/practicing test problems and by the end of the test I would forget all that I actually learned (or retained very little).

Is it still the same way? What solutions are out there? Which school districts or countries are doing it right and getting good results?
