What can I do to make sure my kids develop critical thinking skills given that school isn't of much help

I have kids in elementary and middle school and as much as it a requirement these days to develop critical thinking skills, I find that the schools aren't of much help. Especially, given the lockdowns their regular education has been affected. Wanted to know from the community how else can these key life skills be developed, any particular activities or even online services that may be beneficial for the same would help.
