What's with full-year textbooks? Why isn't the content for students just given out in the form of a bunch of smaller per-week books?

So when I was in high school, you had one giant textbook comprehensive of the content of an entire year's worth of a given subject. Or in the case of chemistry and biology, two years' worth.

I'll never forget how heavy my backpack would at times get.

Why can't they just have a bunch of smaller per-week books, so students have less to carry back and forth to school with them, and/or less to store in their lockers?
