Classroom Pets and CCSS Survey

Hello fellow teachers! I am finishing up my master's program and have created a few lessons that tie CCSS to classroom pets. The scope of my project is fairly small, so I am limited to only one lesson for each core subject, and one animal. The lessons also somewhat skew toward upper elementary, but some, especially the ELA one, would be appropriate for all grade levels. You are free to use/modify/etc any of the lessons, I am just looking for feedback on the concept. You can look at one or all lessons, the most important parts are the surveys at the moment. Thank you! Lessons and Survey

what's an all girls college like?

Hello! I'm currently a high school junior who's just starting to look at colleges, and I've been interested in some all girls colleges (mainly Smith).

Does anyone who goes to or has gone to one have any feedback on their experience? What kind of environment does an all female college create? What are the pros and cons of it? Would you recommend an all female college or a coed one? How much of the social scene is shaped by it being all girls? Any other feedback or advice?

I'd love to know!

Full-Time work and Full-time college classes...advice?

What are some recommendations or what mindset does one have when they get their degree by taking 16 credit hours per session? If you go this route, do you expect to get good grades, or are you satisfied with “good enough” as long as I can get my degree?

Letter of recommendation

Over Christmas break, I’m going to apply to a college that doesn’t need a letter of recommendation, but it is still probably a good idea I believe. I wanted to get one from a teacher at my school, but we are all online right now, and it might be like that for the rest of the semester. What should I do? I know this question may seem basic, but I don’t know much about applying to colleges.

Hello all,

I am teaching some lessons on Community Cultural Wealth and students are having a bit of a tough time grasping the idea (well, some of them are). Any ideas for creative lesson activities? I am also wondering if folks know of a hip hop song of two that might speak to this idea to use in class.

Considering a degree, don't want to take math or science courses

I could rant for a long time about how moronic it is that degrees require you to obtain credits from classes that are unrelated to your degree, but I want to keep this short. I want to become a writer, so I'm considering a Liberal Arts degree. I refuse to take any classes more advanced than Algebra II, because I'm stubborn. Is there a way for me to accomplish this?

Dolly Parton's The Buddy Program

In 1990, the high school dropout rate for Dolly Parton's hometown of Sevierville Tennessee was at 34% (Research shows that most kids make up their minds in fifth/sixth grade not to graduate). That year, all fifth and sixth graders from Sevierville were invited by Parton to attend an assembly at Dollywood. They were asked to pick a buddy, and if both students completed high school, Dolly Parton would personally hand them each a $500 check on their graduation day. As a result, the dropout rate for those classes fell to 6%, and has generally retained that average to this day.

Shortly after the success of The Buddy Program, Parton learned in dealing with teachers from the school district that problems in education often begin during first grade when kids are at different developmental levels. That year The Dollywood Foundation paid the salaries for additional teachers assistants in every first grade class for the next 2 years, under the agreement that if the program worked, the school system would effectively adopt and fund the program after the trial period.

During the same period, Parton founded the Imagination Library in 1995: The idea being that children from her rural hometown and low-income families often start school at a disadvantage and as a result, will be unfairly compared to their peers for the rest of their lives, effectively encouraging them not to pursue higher education. The objective of the Imagination library was that every child in Sevier County would receive one book, every month, mailed and addressed to the child, from the day they were born until the day they started kindergarten, 100% free of charge. What began as a hometown initiative now serves children in all 50 states, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, mailing thousands of free books to children around the world monthly.

On March 1, 2018 Parton donated her 100 millionth book at the Library of Congress: a copy of "Coat of Many Colors" dedicated to her father, who never learned to read or write.

Graduated with a Management Degree, best result, now a dead-end?

I've recently graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in International Hospitality Management, and looked to start working in marketing, although the current pandemic has stripped entry level positions from being possible in the sector.

I am now sadly deeply considering studying again, as where I was meant to work as a manager is practically non-existant in the tourism sector, I've heard coding is a good idea

I have done a small course in digital marketing, but its accreditation is not justifiable as an entry to marketing jobs :/

What do I do? I live comfortable and my family supports me for now, but I feel like I'm just waking up, and going to sleep everyday now, with no dedication to career growth from work or commitment to contributing to a business's success... basically being alive just to be breathing I guess haha

Thesis on B2B Branding - too general?

Hey!

I have to choose a Bachelor Thesis topic. We were recommended to only make use of secondary research and no empirical part as it is not required. In the beginning i wanted to write about B2B branding in general but the professor told me that this will notable accepted as it is too general. My research questions were something like what is the difference between B2B and B2C branding or what are the challenges of using social media for branding in B2B. I was told that this are not research question lol.

So now my plan is to write about digital branding in the B2B logistics industry. Do you think that research questions like which classical b2c social media branding strategies can be transferred to the B2b logistics industry or which are the most relevant channels for B2B marketers?

Or is this still too general? Research ideas welcome

I am seeking a better education, I need it.

Hello! I'm from Turkey, 21 years-old Software Engineering student. Currently, I'm in my 3rd year, and I hate it. My school, which gives me a poor education; the job of Software Engineering, I want to learn technology - hardware, electronics, mathematics, physics - so I can make innovations and inventions that are in idea phase in my mind; my country, for some reasons that will take time to discuss (I love Turkey and being a Turk, reasons are different.); I can not find an opportunity to take steps I want to take and I want to go overseas, discover and learn new things, go on an adventure.

I am thinking that, if I am going to get educated by a person/school/university, it must be best. I want to be in a better institution, an university which is in the top 100 universities list. And I DO want to get educated properly, and get my thirst for learning satisfied. But, right here starts the problem...

Overseas universities, especially top ones, require pretty different things than Turkish universities do. In Turkey, pretty much of the time it is all about an exam, a very bad designed exam, and that is all. It is pretty ruthless against people like me. But overseas universities require a social identify, academic success, reasons, motivations, goals, ideas, et cetera and recommendation letters (which is something that is pretty stranger to me); maybe other things too?

In my country, many of these qualifications are unimportant for people. Only thing that matters is school, and memorization, where people say just pass the exams. Fortunately, I learned to read in my early ages (5) and I was exposed to English language materials (books, games, songs) which had let me develop a rich English knowledge early-on. But, if only the universities was only requiring fluency in English.

And choosing a way to go, working for it, making decisions... How do you even choose an university? I know economical factors, which is a problem anyway; cultural, political, social factors, which I am knowledged about; but what about university itself? How do you know when an university gives you what you want? What makes them different? How do you know about their philosophy, if they are going to give me what I want or knowledge factor of education is same everywhere? How can you get an scholarship, is the general entry requirements are for scholarship offers, or getting granted a scholarship requires you to shine among people?

Economical factors... I was working as a waiter full-time before restaurants are closed-down in Turkey again and I worked for about 4 months. I earned about 10 000 TRY which is roughly 1276 USD; and taking an English exam to prove my fluency, taking passports for univ. students, getting a visa, making some shopping for myself (I don't do shopping until I need to. I wanted to save my money as a resource for starting my adventure), plane tickets; I probably spent much of my money already.

Time factor... I can't stand wasting my time any more; it is killing me. I lost my hair due to stress, and I don't have energy and motivation to do many things I want...

I did research for a long time, and I am still doing; but I am lost. Ah, there is also COVID-19. I am writing here, in hope of finding a good discussion, some advices, want to hear your experiences.

Currently, I think best of my options are learning Japanese and trying my chance at University of Tokyo; learning Korean (I think proving your Korean skill with TOPIK alongside English improves your chance of getting a scholarship) and trying my change at Seoul National University; or learning German and trying my chance at ETH Zurich. I have readen that ETH Zurich requires applicates to take exams for entry and I think this is a good opportunity because I will make up for my shortcomings if I dive my head in science, which is what I want to do anyway, and take an entrance exam. I have choosen this universities because of their written success. They are universities that are in top 100 among others. But, to try my chance at any of this I must wait for one year... Put the passing time aside, every one will say "This is your last year, get your degree.", but I do not want to take that degree, I think it makes me worthless.

Thank you for taking time to read, I'm looking forward to talking with some people.

International Relations BSc or International Studies BA? Help me choose

I’m going to start university next september and can’t choose between the two programs so I need a little help.

I don’t know which would be more useful. I heard that you can’t really find a job with int studies but I really doubt that’s true.

The two programs are very similar in my opinion, the only difference is that in IS there are some culture and history related subjects and you have to learn a language through the years but the rest is just like IR, so politics and economics pretty much.

I’m really interested in diplomacy so because of that I’d choose IR but int studies just sounds a little more interdisciplinary for me which I like.

The international studies program give a BA and the international relations one gives a BSc.

Can anyone help me out? I really don’t want to make a decision that I’ll regret so I hope someone can give me some advice on which would be better to choose. Perhaps some of you have one of the said degrees.

The 'education bubble,' like any asset bubble, is not merely a financial crisis. It is a moral crisis: a misallocation and distortion of value. The underlying problem of the modern university is a crisis of integrity and purpose.

"A list of the modern university's dysfunctions: corrosive ideology, administrative bloat, virtue signaling, a bureaucratic management culture, low standards and grade inflation, cultural amnesia, a focus on employment and material success, proliferation and fragmentation of disciplines, ballooning tuition costs and rising student debt, a student-services arms race, prestige-envy and rankings games, distracting and meaningless assessment requirements, endowment hoarding, increasing dependence on low-wage adjunct faculty, careerism and neophilia, and worthless research (including citation rings and an embarrassing “replication crisis” in the social sciences).

Clearly the modern university shows plenty of signs of illness!

Some offer an economic explanation: all these trends are subsidized by market distortions creating an unsustainable “education bubble.” A disillusioned public is increasingly unwilling to support the debased currency of higher education, and the pandemic only adds pressure to deflate the system, with some colleges already cutting or closing.

My own view is that the “education bubble,” like any asset bubble, is not merely a financial crisis. It is a moral crisis: a misallocation and distortion of value. The underlying problem of the modern university is a crisis of integrity and purpose."

How do you revise lessons and prepare for exams at home ?

As a student , I noticed throughout my years of education that not many teachers give you tips on how to study at home despite the latter being very crucial for one's educational progress . You just have to figure that out by yourself . While it is true that every learner is unique and no method is the same for everyone yet I think that there is a baseline that needs to be met in order to prepare for any type of exam . For example if your method is based on understanding the lesson well and you take an exam that tends to stray away from it for a bit , you will be in trouble . Or if you base your studying on nailing various applications of the lesson and you take an exam that is fundamentally lesson based , you will find difficulty too . Is it more practical to work on a subject non stop until exam day or create a specific day to work on it then setting it aside ? I fell like a lot of students nowadays either exhaust themselves to death or just say f*** it and stop caring .

I’m Looking Into A Career In Education

Hello. I’m a recent high school grad looking to go to college after taking a gap year. I’ve mainly been considering finance careers so far, but those require a lot of internships and club activity and values networking over individual merit, which makes me hesitant on getting into it. So, I’ve been looking into education. Would I be able to get into education with a finance or economics degree or do I need to change major? Does education have the same reliance on networking over individual merit that finance has?

Why we need gamification in e-learning

Hey everyone,

I began to learn the topic of e-learning and came to the statement that it's not possible without gamification. Even digital education may seem a boring and complicated process. People always added games and little entertainment to learning to make this process of getting knowledge funnier. Today we use the term “Gamification” when we talk about a new approach of implementing games in digital education. If you consider any advanced E-learning app or website, you’ll see there not only educational materials, but also some gamification features.

How does gamification work for an education website or an app?

  1. It makes students feel more motivated to do each task and the whole course to the end.
  2. Besides motivation, it improves their self-confidence.
  3. It boosts users not to be afraid to fail.
  4. Games establish team-work skills.
  5. It also works as a reward system and helps see results right here and now.
  6. Gamification features may guide a student through a course.

You can build a gamification feature in an education site or app using any strategy that you think will work for your audience.

For example, content gamification where you write the story and embed it to the course, or structural gamification where you can use particular tasks such as quizzes.

We can’t imagine education without gamification. It encourages students as well as their teachers. Technology of today provides us a great opportunity to make a digital education more colorful and exciting.

I really tried to write the special post for this community and not to just copy information from my blog, but if this topic responds to you, you can read my whole article about gamification. Don't hesitate to present your reflections here in comments. What do you think about this phenomenon or maybe you know some better examples than those which I described? Appreciate every opinion. Thanks.

Can reading books out loud help get rid of my accent?

I'm a current High School Junior attending a public school in the United States and I have a bit of an accent when I speak English. I was born and raised in the United States, however, my parents are both immigrants, so neither of them could speak English and I was sent to live with my grandparents when I was about 2 to 4 years-old, in China. In other words, I never had the best base for learning languages. I spent much of my first to third-grade years barely being able to read a hint of English and much of my middle school years with a horrible stutter. Now that I am older, I realized that I really truly want to improve my English, so I opted to start reading more books, such as Biographies and very high-level reading material, especially books that most College Students should have read, as I will be attending College fairly soon. I, also, decided to read out loud, as I can't afford a real speech coach/teacher and my school doesn't offer a program that could improve my speech. Any other tips and tricks that would be beneficial for me?

Also, I heard learning Latin could help my English and help my being able to learn other romance languages, such as French (I'm currently taking French class), Spanish, and Italian.

What can be done with drastic differences in education depending on culture/background?(In this case differences in the usage of PEMDAS)

Recently I was hit with a culture shock when a math problem has gone viral and has divided people into two camps. The problem is 6/2(1+2). We have one side who answered "9" while another (including me) answered "1" and both are apparently correct according to their backgrounds.

I found out that in the PEMDAS rule Multiplication/Division are given equal priority and are solved by answering the one that comes first from left to right, the same goes for Addition/Subtraction. However, certain parts of the world (like where I was raised) follow a different (and apparently according to multiple sources, an outdated) take where we follow the same acronym rule but word for word. Multiplication over Division then Addition over Subtraction regardless of arrangement. I even tried it on multiple different calculators that I own and have access to and I have been given 1 and 9 on separate calculators repsectively.

So as it seems, some time ago the PEMDAS has been remade into the modern rule, however there's no simple way to change the education system for everyone everywhere thus leaving many cultures (like the one I was raised in) to still follow the apparently outdated take and have continued to teach others to do the same with no idea that there is a new standard take now.

Edit: No flair since I'm not which is the best one for this question.

[New York State] What should I do in my situation?

Hi! So I've been taking Spanish for like the past 2 years (also was at the beginning of this year, more on that later), but now I take French because my Spanish teacher was giving ridiculous assignments that are not gonna help anyone learn and are just gonna take up a bunch of my time.

The only other option my school offers is French, so begrudgingly I've been taking that...it's honestly just been painful to take, like, I have no interest in France, the culture, the language, it literally has no practical use for me to learn it.

My therapist says that you can get a language exemption in NYS I think if you take another hard or more important class (potentially if school is just hard and too stressful?), so, how true are those things?

Another question is...can I take classes for school outside of my main district?

TOP 5 OF EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS IN 2020

Firstly, it is important to clarify the meaning of an educational system. More specifically this term generally refers to public schooling, not private schooling, especially to kindergarten through high school programs. In other words, according to one research, one educational system comprises everything that goes into educating public-school students at the federal, state, or community levels, for instance, check the following examples below:

· Laws, policies, and regulations

· Public funding, resource allocations, and procedures for determining funding levels

· State and district administrative offices, school facilities, and transportation vehicles

· Human resources, staffing, contracts, compensation, and employee benefits

· Books, computers, teaching resources, realia.

· Other elements.

Once the topic of discussion is enough clear, it is important to continue with the main idea of this text which is to identify the six best educational systems around the world nowadays:

1 FINLAND

Recently, Finland was declared to be “a miracle of education” by the World Bank. On Universitas 21’s assessment of the world’s top universities, and many people think and argue what makes Finland so special? Well, Finland’s educational system concentrates more on aspects like measuring more than a score. For example, students in most of the cases are asked to show their reactions related to daily life issues, such as drugs, politics, sex, music, etc.

Additionally, Finland cares about its teachers and students. One example of this is that students have more time playing and creating social interactions instead of spending too much homeworking. Moreover, learning is free for many students including citizens and from other parts of the world.

2 JAPAN

It is considered Japan second because this country has had a strong educational system for so many years. To start, Japan makes all of its curricula at the national level and that is to avoid any level of educational discrimination. Also, primary education from the age of 6 to 15 is almost free in Japan. For that reason, it is common that most of its inhabitants at the age of 18 have received any sort of education.

Additionally, the educational constitution of the country is very decisive, thus it is not common to see any kind of mistake because they are very strict. Maybe you have heard that in Japan there are strong educational legislations respecting cultural aspects and more, but that is what they are so unique. For example, children first learn manners then knowledge, teaching respect to others highlighting values. Moreover, the janitors in the schools are the students and that is not a punishment; it is linked with a sense of belonging.

3 SOUTH KOREA

This country is well recognized to have one of the world’s strongest or hardest education systems. It is well known that many other countries try to copy or arrange their education to the Korean educational structure and execution of their academic exploits. But, what do they have that other system don’t? Initially, parents are involved in the education process of their children, that is to say, that parents have more space to regulate and assess what their kids’ learning.

Also, technology is a must in classrooms in South Korea. This country is one of the global leaders integrating technology in their curricula. For instance, schools are including smart gadgets for both teachers and students, in order to enjoy or design learning plans according to culture and learning styles.

4 DENMARK

Denmark highlights the most by offering students several financial benefits that you won’t find in many other countries. To begin with, In Denmark, university tuition is entirely free for citizens. In other words, zero upfront costs and no large debts to pay off once they enter the workplace or start earning a salary. Plus, this country thinks a lot in the student’s pocket, for example, student housing is very affordable, as are textbooks and other school supplies.

One thing you can learn about Danish study options is that they are internationally-oriented and combine teaching with research. In other words, there are good chances that the university you choose has partnerships with research institutions and businesses.

5 RUSSIA

Recently, this country is considered one of the top European countries that produce students ready for work, this means that once students finish their professional level of education, they are ready to start their journey in work-life. Now, About the education system, the Russian curriculum focuses deeply on sciences (physics, biology, and chemistry are separated). Maybe this could be the reason why there are a lot of Russian mathematicians. Additionally, in Russia Compared with other European countries, the cost of living is reasonable. For instance, the cost of food, rent, clothing, and cultural activities is equivalent to the European average. Plus, if you are a student, this country gives you a lot of concessions like reduced prices at theatres, museums, opera houses, cinemas.

To finish, it is important to remember the concept of an educational system which refers to all the implements that a public school may need, in order to give successful and meaningful learning. Also, to clarify that these countries may have had a good score through the PISA testing, but they are other countries that may have a successful system, which we cannot demerit.

Transitioning from zoom to normal class

Hello, so I’m a new teacher. I’m still new to the field, and this is my first year teaching. In September, I started teaching on Zoom. I never met my students. Next week, schools might open again. I teach Grade 4 students, but when we start, I know that I am going to have trouble with classroom management. My students see me as the “cool” teacher who happens to be very lenient. They’ve been disruptive many times on Zoom, but the solution was easy. There is always the mute button. But there’s no mute button in real life (I wish!) So, how can I start the first week and make sure that the classroom doesn’t turn into pure chaos? I’m really worried about it. Any tips for classroom management for the first week? I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Virtual Classroom Development

Virtual environments escalate every component to any structure. What before was good becomes great and what was bad becomes worse. If communication was an issue before what does a virtual environment offer?

There are many “software as a service” platforms that were being used before virtual learning that are being used for virtual learning. What accommodations and changes need to be made?

Assignment and grade analytics can only report as the system or curriculum allows, but communication is an ever changing component at levels of the individual, class and subject.

A communication database that develops automatically as a teacher’s curriculum progresses would provide automated assistance and tutoring to both teachers and students. It would encourage virtual communication as its function would be dependent on it.

Messages, notes, notifications and even time spent on a specific assignment, phase or subject can be saved in a database. This collection of data would automate resource reports necessary to complete an assignment. With database filtering, specific learning styles can be targeted and reported for an individual.

How else can virtual learning develop?

What are college courses that you can practically learn on your own? (HUMMS Oriented Courses)

I'm a Junior Highschool student preparing for Senior High, and I was just wondering what could be my options for college since I'm also preparing which Track to choose in SHS. My choice is HUMMS, and I'm aiming for Pol Sci + Economics for a double major. But I also want to study Criminal Justice, History, Philosophy, Psychology, English, Sociology, and Educational Policies, what do I do? How do I choose a course that will guarantee in achieving proper and substantial knowledge for what I dream of being? And if I do settle upon just 1-3 courses, are the other courses achieveable by self-study?

How should business education curriculum in the COVID's wake?

So if you're a business professor--or even a career coach--who operates in teaching about the business landscape, chances are your curriculum and advice are now out of date. COVID-19 has seriously changed our economy, but because educators often teach specific pockets of the larger subject of business (investing, launching, etc.), they haven't had a ton of chances to put their experiences together and generate some new takeaways...with the exception of this December, when 400+ investors, entrepreneurs, public policy leaders and education professionals will discuss how we can help our communities adjust, recover and rebound. This is highly useful for anyone adjusting their curriculum for the next semester, doing research, or generally operating in the business sphere.

Anyone have good resources for learning about education and psycology?

Hello there! I'm a current high school senior, and I want to be a high school teacher one day. I want to start doing research on pedagogy and psycology to better prepare myself for college and my eventual career, so I would appreciate any reliable resources you have on either of these topics. I prefer academic sources, as casual sources tend to be...kinda horrible. At everything.

I especially want to learn more about psycological issues that may affect both classroom management and how students learn. I've got a decent understanding of the basic mental health issues and also of several neurodivergencies, but finding info on how they affect learning is very hard, particularly when it comes to neurodivergencies that aren't autism or adhd. In fact, finding any info on stuff like aspd or gifteness would be really appreciated, as conditions like that are so mired in stereotypes I literally have not been able to find a single source that isn't flowery and sensationalized, something I feel may be a trend even in actual research.

I'm not under the impression I'm going to become a psycologist or educator by reading articles from google, I just want to have a good grasp on these things so I can keep it in mind when I begin university. It's really important to me to make sure I understand the issues my students may have, as well as how to help them and what may be a sign of something more. I know what it feels like to have teachers that don't understand how your brain work, and I hope I can be better for my future students.

Any website or youtube channel or even a method for researching things is welcome! Thank you for your time!

Final project for class

Hello, I’m really hoping I can get some insight from general education and special education teachers. My final project for my students with exceptionalities class is to create a family engagement plan that is inclusive to both types of students and their families. Do any of you have any engagements tips or activities that you apply to your classroom that I could use in my paper? I have quite a few ideas now such as weekly newsletters, website/FB group for photos and updates, home visits, fun activity nights, traveling notebook, student showcase. Any help you give would be appreciated. Thanks!

Arguments for the use of where refering to websites.

I need academic help here, since it's about a public appliance. I've made an essay in which I used "where" to refer to social media. The examinators have discounted a few points because of that, since apparently "where" can only be used for physical places.

If this is the wrong subreddit for this kind of stuff, please, recommend me a more suitable one. If you know any arguments for the use of "where" refering to social media, please, send them here, along with sources.

Do people really think the American application system is good

I’m not an American but have studied in Europe in Ireland who I think has the best application system to university where you have a 2 year program you pick your best subjects and count 6 of them you get a score depending what you get in an exam at the end and with that score you apply to university since it’s all automated there is no bias as all that u are is a number in one the system

(Ps im fluent English and speak without an accent but I can’t write good quality essays since all I do are sciences and maths were you don’t need to be able to ramble about themes and other meaningless stuff)

I wanted to apply to the USA and bieng a top student gettting more than 90% in 6 classes that I was gonna count I thought I could get in but when I researched I found that it was such a shit show you have to write essays about random stuff so immediately people who aren’t good at English as a subject basically stand no chance unless you can pay someone to write the essay for you as well the SAT being maths and English the maths being embarrassingly easy but again people who aren’t good at English are out one more time what I think is even worse is their reliance that you have to be part of clubs to stand a chance how’s that a good system it can allow people who get much worse grades than me and who generally are dumber to get in over people like me

Not even gonna mention the obvious bias and minority quotas universities often have like for an Asian American being harder to get in than an African American

I really don’t see any upside to this system it only works for those who are good at English as a subject

Or am I missing something?

TLDR-filler

The ONE thing which would have stopped me from getting straight Fs in Math and dropping out in grade 9 only to find out I had a genius level IQ!

(Yes, ik IQ tests are unfair and often inaccurate measures but just read it)

Soooooo....... Grade 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 failed math miserably. I thought I was a moron but really it was THE WAY MATH ITSELF WAS EXPLAINED!!!

"SOLVE" the "problem". Er.. Ok... the um problem... needs to be?Tf do you mean solve? And tf you mean problem? These terms were vomited out like we should already "get it". Tiny problem- intelligent people can interpret SOLVE a PROBLEM in hundreds of ways so an intelligent kid can interpret this statement upwards of 90,000 different ways.

So: "Problem solving consists of using generic or ad hoc methods in an orderly manner to find solutions to problems. "- Wikipedia

But: "[Problem solving] in mathematics, to solve an equation is to find its solutions, which are the values (numbers, functions, sets, etc.) that fulfill the condition stated by the equation, consisting generally of two expressions related by an equals sign. When seeking a solution, one or more variables are designated as unknowns. A solution is an assignment of values to the unknown variables that makes the equality in the equation true." - Wikipedia

And also: "A problem is a difficulty which may be resolved by problem solving" - Wikipedia

A difficulty huh.... Aight. So without logical explanations I used the "using generic or ad hoc methods in an orderly manner to find solutions to problems" technique. Not knowing it ACTUALLY meant was to find "an assignment of values to the unknown variables that makes the equality in the equation true." because I could imagine thousands of ways to look at this "problem" and "create equality of value on both sides of the statement including imputing any unstated values"

If someone told !e in grade 3 the mathematical problem solving concept and GOAL I would have been top of my class but noone did so I just started skipping all math since it seemed like pushy abuse without guidance.

Then I found out, became a Mensa member, and spent a decade as a data research analyst. IF THEY HAD ONLY TOLD ME INSTEAD OF PUTTING SQUIGGLES ON THE BLACKBOARD AND GIVING NO HINT WHAT THEY MEANT BY "SOLVE" OR "PROBLEM". Once someone explained it to me I was reading the special theory of relativity within a couple months. Then learned 8 languages and 10 programming languages, game theory, two degrees (BSc Psych, BFA Music, MSc Cognitive Sciences with an advanced diploma in psycholinguistics while my friends were still in HS) Then I used the knowledge I found to create new meta-Bayesian techniques to foresee presymptomatic mental illnesses and begin appropriate treatments.

Point- Teachers should never assume children are as limited as they are. Instead I tried to figure out WHY 5 was to be dissolved in 8.... Or why it was a PROBLEM, if 5+8=13 ERM what's the problem!!!!!!????

Ok u get it. Anyone else have education stories where the vastly assuming way an idea was presented created a wall to understanding it?

Will my college admissions be badly affected by transferring to another school in my junior year?

So, currently I am a sophomore in high school and I've been wanting to transfer to a different school that has a really good creative writing problem? The only problem? My mother basically says that if I do transfer to another school in my junior year, I'll seriously mess up my college applications. She's even gone as far to say that I'll end up getting in a terrible college because of it and that people that transfer in their junior go to worse colleges. I've done some research into this and I haven't found any statistics that show that people do worse when then transfer in their junior year. I've been a straight A student pretty consistently throughout high school and have taken some AP classes (and likely will take more AP classes if I transfer) so I think that academically, I should be pretty okay for college. Then again, I don't really know much about the outside world so what do you guys think?

I'm 17 and i'm in highschool right now. I have also considered going to a business school, because i'm also pretty good at economics and I want to create my own company somewhen in the future.

Are business schools even worth it? There's plenty of businessmen who didn't go to one and are still very successful.

Currently I’m getting an associates in teacher education

Hello, So I’m feeling like I need some insight, just please be nice but truthful. I work in retail and my union has a program that lets you get a free associates. When the program started there were 3 options (criminal justice, business, teacher education) of those three I thought the teacher education didn’t sound that bad. I only have five classes left until I get my associates, but I find myself wondering if I even want to be a teacher? I love lesson planning but I keep feeling inept. There are times where I am frustrated with my own kids so how can I be a teacher? My union is now offered a chance for a free bachelors with the same three starting degrees, since I have been getting my associates they now offer so many more programs for the associates only. I’ve been looking into degrees that you can get with a Bachelors in teacher education, and an instructional coordinator sounds very appealing. However I am wondering how much experience what you need in the field to land that career? As I said before I feel inept when teaching kids, granted I’ve had to help teach my son for almost the last year (virtually). What careers are possible with a bachelors in education where you aren’t a teacher, but still make a decent wage.

1-(logn+5), (logn^2)

2-(log^2n),(logn^2)

3- (3^n),(5n^2)

4-(2^n),(nlogn)

5-(3^n),(logn)^2

6-(nlogn+n^2),(logn+10)

7-2^n,n!

2-if an algorithm's time complexity on average-case is θ(f(n)) prove that on the worst-case its Ω(f(n))

and o(f(n)) for best case

I struggled so much in elementary school.

Thus is a bot of a time capsule for me.

I was bad at spelling, school, and home work.

In 4th grade we had these spelling books. Like 6 page per week. 16 words on the first page. The next 2 was about the vocabulary of those 12 words and the last 2 had 8 words that were much more difficult.

The layout of the test was, I think, all 16 of the first pages and a random 4 of the last 8.

But I could not learn to spell all the words well enough to do well on the tests. So what my teacher did after a parent teacher conference was she highlighted that 4 words of the I that would be on the test. That way I could focus exclusively on the important words. I dont remeber how I usually did. But I do remember getting an 80 and being thrilled about it.

I dont know how I feel about this. I got special treatment to succeed in elementary school, this was not the only instance of this sort of thing, and I still preformed worse than the average. it does make me happy that I got into college at all and have the opportunity to surpass what my teachers and parent probably thought I would achieve when I was little.

I have attended University and want to return to retrain in a different skill. How would I go about doing this without paying extreme fees? UK

I attended Uni between 2012 to 2016, first in Performing Arts, then dropped out and did Media Production. I then failed the latter due to mental health. Obviously both of these degrees don't count for much in the world, I was young and University was thrust upon me by my peers, family, and society at large. Now I find I cannot return because student finance only grants 4 years, but I don't really have any other education to get me anywhere, so I feel as though I've ruined my chances. Is there any way I can get free or paid for education in my position?

Where can I get help on this? Should I ask my teacher? What should I say? It’s for a reassessment tomorrow to get a better grade and I need to figure out how to do this but I just can’t.

Please help me with these problems, why am I wrong?

There are two questions that I did, but I don’t know what I did wrong.

First question with my answer: https://ibb.co/D7jk3Vm Zoomed in question: https://ibb.co/gytjcYY Zoomed in graph: https://ibb.co/qB58vzn Zoomed in answer: https://ibb.co/89Cd4Sn

My teacher said “Incorrect equation” My answer got a 1/2

Second question with my answer: https://ibb.co/GJcSG8R Zoomed in on question: https://ibb.co/qJYKfXQ Zoomed in on graph: https://ibb.co/6FS0Fpg Zoomed in on answer: https://ibb.co/6mvbsS3

My teacher said “Incorrect: No equation and wrong graph” My answer got a 0/2

I asked my teacher what she means by what she said as to why my answers are incorrect and she said

“for both, you needed to do the math to show how you generated the new equation like how I showed you  in class. It’s not just explaining using verbal words.

And, one of your equation was incorrect, therefore your graph was wrong. The other one you didn’t even generate an equation and your graph was wrong.

Please show your marg on #10 & #11.”

What would be what I’d have to write for the answers that would be correct? Also I just don’t understand what my teacher means as to why I am incorrect and what she means by no equation and wrong equation.

Thank you so much I really need help

Looking to pursue a second degree, but not sure where to start

About a year ago I graduated from a university with a B.A. in English, concentration in Literature. Originally, I started college in the sciences, but a series of events led to me transferring schools and switching majors to English, as it had the least credit requirements left, and was the quickest way for me to graduate. Unfortunately, I have absolutely no desire to work in any field related to the subject. My sincere passion is still in the sciences. I don't regret a lot in my life, but I've spent (more than) 4 years in college and a lot of money, and all I have to show for it is a degree in a field I hate, then I will regret it for the rest of my life. So my question is, how do I go about attempting to pursue a second degree? I love school and the thought of spending 4 more years in college actually excites me, but the thought of paying for those 4 more years does not. I am already in debt from my first go at school, and would like to apply for as many scholarships as possible.. but I don't know where to even begin looking for grants or scholarships that would be available to me since I already have a degree, and a lot of grants are for first time degree seekers. I've been told there's a lot of money for women in STEM but where do I find or apply for that money? If anybody has even the smallest insight or tips about how to find scholarship/grant money, I would really appreciate it. I didn't have that money the first time around, so I don't have the slightest clue as to where to go from here. I'm in Northern Virginia, applying to GMU, if that information is useful. Please and thank you!

How Brexit will affect UK Universities?

How Brexit will affect UK Universities?

Universities across Europe will be keeping a close eye on how Brexit unfolds, in particular to see if UK students will still be classified as Home–EU when paying fees. UK students’ study at universities across the EU, and any change to their fees classification will undoubtedly impact on European universities' student intake and financial income.

Financial Aids: Will it cover basic living needs?

A little background: I graduated from HS 3 years ago and immediately moved out from home and took a gap year to ‘experience the real world’. 1 year of working turned into 3 and I’m starting to feel like it’s time to go back to school. I plan on starting the Fall semester of 2021.

My dilemma is that when I start college, I will have to cut back on work to focus on my studies, and that will negatively affect my budget. So my question is if I apply for financial aids, will there be an option where they will cover my basic needs like food and rent while I’m still in school?

AMA from a Educator who has taught the entire range of situations(rural vs city, low income vs high income, bottom of the standings to the top).

I have had an “interesting”to say the least career in education. I have been all over the map in terms of subjects and grades. I stayed out of English(on my cell for ease of use)for obvious reasons but all ways aimed for high school overall in not typical programs. I have been both leadership on both admin and union. I have been used for a gambit of roles as I never walked away from a challenge as pay never motivated me. I have seen the good, bad and ugly in the system. As I read through the threads I noticed a lot of questions, as schools have changed in leaps and bounds over the las 15-20 years. A lot of them could be answered easily but unless you are in the system it’s not in your face. It also explains the actions of a lot of teachers and principals. So please AMA as I think those looking at a career in education or asking questions about decisions might benefit from my unwillingness to walk away from a “impossible” situation.

Help! What can I take for my masters degree?

I have a degree in Graphic design, so what could I take as a masters INSTEAD of graphic design....

How far can I push my BA design degree to get into something different and learn a new subject altogether?

After everything going on this year, I have found it impossible to find any work as a graphic designer, so I figured, while I was still in the student mindset, I can give my education 1 more year and grab myself a masters in something completely new! I'm obviously very creative but I want to study something more theory based, I tried contacting universities about environmental studies but they require a relevant degree.

So if anyone has any suggestions or similar experiences to share, what could I take with my design degree? (I live in the UK)

Are there any good online resources for a text-reordering exercise?

One of my objectives is to make sure students can outline the structure of an argumentative essay and I want to start off the lesson with something not too challenging, i.e. splitting a very short argumentative text (~200 words) into different parts and having them reorganise the text into what they think is the proper order. Are there online resources for this kind of thing? I want them to be able to discuss within a group and present the answers on an online platform for later discussion.

Can I get into USC/UCLA with a C- junior year?

I am an extremely well rounded student-athlete who has played three sports, taken part in multiple extracurriculars catering to my field of interest and community service, held two jobs, and always maintained a GPA above a 3.8 for all of high school. My first semester of junior year I took an honors math class I had absolutely no business being in, and received a C-. My GPA that semester was it’s lowest ever at a 3.8. The following semester I switched into a regular math class and received a B, bumping my GPA up to a 4.0 again. Given this circumstance, does it really hurt or affect my chances of getting in considering that for USC I am applying for Business Cinematic Arts as my first choice and Communication as my second choice. For UCLA I am applying to the film school first choice and applying for business administration second choice.

Is One Year of a Degree Worth Anything?

Hi, not sure if this is the appropriate sub for this question but maybe someone can help.

I'm wondering if one completes only part of a degree course - say, one year or two years out of a three year degree, would they get any kind of qualification for that? I'm considering a bachelors degree, but due to certain circumstances, I don't know if I'll actually be able to continue for 3 years.
Or would it be the case that you either get the degree, or you don't - no in betweens?
Thanks!

How much of your class time is set aside for derailments/tangents?

This question probably applies more to high school that's a bit less strict. I remember some of my favorite moments in US history classes were moments someone in the class, whether me or another student, brought up some other part of history. In a way because it felt like we were manipulating the teacher, I suspect, but also because it was truly fascinating to hear the passion from the teacher for moments that weren't necessarily required to be taught.

However, unless you're some first year teacher who's not firm enough with the class or somethng, I'm sure you know what's happening, that the students are trying to distract you, whether that distraction is motivated with malicious intent or genuine curiosity being mostly irrelevant. How much do you factor in these possible tangents into the day? Do you keep track in your head, like, "we've covered almost everything I planned today, might as well humor them, this could be fun"?

Online degrees

Hey!

I work as an external contractor in IT and one of the things which drives me crazy and totally mad is when despite a proven record of successful projects and a number of won competitions, I'm turned down by HR because I don't have a formal degree.

I wonder whether I can do a degree online, so I can keep working and paying my bills.

I interested in two types of a degree - a total shit as it gets - as HR seems not to care in most cases either way - and an online degree from a recognized university - for the case somebody in HR would bother to read.

Is the later even possible? To get an online degree from an uni such as Standford, MIT, Harvard, ...? Is it even worth it (I mean, won't they dismiss it as soon as they see online and all that afford, time and money will be wasted?)?

Thanks for your inputs.

Supporting teenagers' intellectual development

What are good educational ways to entertain and endorse high school teen's curiosity, intellect, and problem-solving abilities in the STEM field?

Brilliant.org seems to be a good approach. Are there some "real life" educational platforms useful, like Arduino or similar?

The goal is to sustain a constant educational & intellectual "pull" over some years without being too "deliberate". Ideas?

edit:

I personally love "Great Courses Plus" but it seems too demanding for teen kids.

Discovery Learning is no better than Direct Instruction.

It seems like research is starting to show that discovery learning is no better than direct instruction, and maybe in some cases worse because students can lack focus and direction or because of how much time discovery learning takes.

Anecdotally I agree. Its an interesting idea but from what I have seen it doesn’t seem to work very well.

I’d love to hear from others especially if you can point to research supporting the stance you take.

How to provide social interaction for students during COVID-19

Hi, my district is looking for creative ways to foster the social-emotional needs of students during COVID-19. I am here asking for your suggestions. We have thought of the following:

Idea #1: Although remote, we can turn 1 day per week into an asynchronous day, then invite students into school to do their asynchronous day. Only 10 kids per classroom, but at least they would get some social interaction!

Idea #2: Play online games together and/or host a watch party

Idea #3: Weekly check-ins with students via video chat

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, especially based off of idea #1. Thank you!

Educational Event!

Hi! :) I'm not sure if this is the appropriate subreddit to post this so if this is isn't allowed please let me know and I'll take it down!

I'm part of the All Girls STEM Society, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in San Diego entirely run by high school students. Our mission is to challenge the underrepresentation of women in STEM fields by encouraging the future generation. AGSS works hard to inspire and excite young girls from grades 3-8 to pursue their interests in STEM fields, through free monthly workshops and events (now virtual).

In these monthly workshops, we teach topics that range from rocketry to programming in an encouraging environment. Overall, the organization has had over 4800 participants from more than 250 schools, and we are still growing!

Our next event is an Astronomy Workshop on November 22nd 2:00 - 3:30 PST through Zoom where together we will compete in trivia games, tackle challenging problems solved by NASA scientists, and discuss the big questions of the universe!

Sorry for the long introduction, but basically does anyone have any tips on how to be engaging during online workshops or teaching? We want to try to try to spark their curiosities as much as possible during these times and it's difficult online. We don't want to try to bore them! :( We also want to try to reach out to more students to participate as our sign-ups have been decreasing during the pandemic (which is understandable) so if anyone else has suggestions about this feel free to comment!

Sorry again for such a long post, and to all the teachers out there, we seriously appreciate you for being so amazing as after being on the teaching end, we understand how much work is put in to help us get a great education, especially now! And to all the students, we got this! :D

Our goal is to go deep on the machine learning side and provide a hyper-tailored environment. We're looking for folks to provide us with feedback, insights, beta test the product, and collaborate. Student Debt + College

Hello educators on reddit!

I am a first generation American high school senior that plans on majoring in Early Childhood Education. I willingly accept the fact that I will not be making much money from this job as teachers are highly underpaid but I am worried about debt. I was recently accepted to a college but received no scholarship at all and this was devastating because I am living in poverty. I have estimated my college tuition would be be around 50k in total for all four years. However, for personal reasons, I want to leave home and attend a state college. This college would cost me about 90k in total. Now enough of the context! I read that your debt should not be higher than your starting salary but clearly that is not possible in my situation.

My questions for you all is:

  • Should I attend the state college even though I will be in much higher debt?

  • How do you all handle the low salary and high student loan debt?

  • Do you have any tips about paying for college, money, etc for someone entering the adult world?

I’m in a positive/negative grade cycle

-Repost from another subreddit I’m (M19) college student and majoring in physics. I found that I fall into this cycle every school year and it happened this semester too. Basically the cycle starts like this, I do good on a test, I get cocky thinking “I’m really smart” and start to slack off thinking I don’t need to do as much work. I then get a bad grade on the next test. After I get this bad grade I get pissed off at myself and use that anger to study for the next test in the class to prove I can get a better grade. I get a good grade on that test and start to get cocky again then get a bad grade on the next test. Basically I lose motivation after getting a good grade. I know the solution to this is really simple “don’t get cocky and slack off” but I don’t really know how to do that. I want to know if anyone has any good advice on not getting into that cocky mindset so I can consistently get good grades. -Sorry for the bad format/grammar I’m on mobile

Recently, they got two kittens and are having a hard time understanding how to play with kittens in a way that is gentle and doesn't either scare the kittens or get them a good cat scratch. Does anyone know of any stories I could read to them or videos I could show them?

Very Small Classes

Does anyone know of any studies on the effect of very small class sizes? I know there have been studies on class sizes in the teens and twenties- most famously the STAR experiment- but can’t find anything on the effect of very small class sizes – like 12 students or less. Especially interested in later elementary and middle school years.

What are your experiences with teacher burn out ?

I’m a substitute teacher in Alberta and I find myself beyond exhausted every time I return home from school. The schools I sub at are about half an hour away from where I live. I love teaching but I find it difficult to balance my personal life with it.

I'm not academic, what can I do?

Hi, I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but I'll try.
I've never liked school. The social and academic part of school was a struggle up until I started college and it got better socially. I absolutely hate academics. I hate grades and I hate essays. It ruins my whole day and school makes me want to sink beneath the ground.

I enjoy graphic design, filming, editing, music and script making and I'd love to have school surrounding only that, but academics seem to always make its way through and therefore making me demotivated for the things I actually enjoy.

I apologize this is messy, but I'm writing this in a hurry.
Should I drop out and pursue what I really enjoy? I genuinely feel like my life quality is decreasing and it's killing me.
My brother didn't study further after High School and he's thriving with his own business doing what he likes, but he's definitely naturally smarter than me.

No idea what to do at this point. Hoping for some guidance.

What are the easiest, most objectives, accurate, and efficient ways to grade fiction writing on creativity ALONE?

Thinking of doing a thesis on this based on my years of experience in teaching and my ideas on the subject. I am a retired teacher.

As a beginner teacher I was never told the easy and effective or accurate/objective way. I heard many teachers struggle to mark compositions, stories, fiction writing.

I was wondering if I (you) can add to the research and good practice. If I feel no one is able to come u with ways that I have developed (that are efficient,...), I will share these at the end.

I am looking for practices from people in the evaluation practice research field (professors) or students/teachers who took courses in that field in particular.

Please, if you believe it cannot be done, then please withdraw from the conversation. Just stay tuned for ideas coming from participants (and me, if no ways are found to tick all the boxes).

This is a repost from r/elateachers. Trying to broaden the research here. Thank you.

Going back to school

I dont know if this belongs here but, I always seem to get overwhelmed asking peers, family, and even Google. I am 26, I've never done well in school really if you ask me but I've made my mind up about going to college. The one thing though is trying to figure out how to prepare myself academically to go back to school. I've always done poorly in math and in science and would like to find out where I am on the scale. It gets frustrating at times because it really deters me from wanting to go back, but I know I NEED TOO. I WANT TOO. This is really a cry for help lol. THANK YOU.
