Class Rank System

Hello, so I'm part of the student council in my high school and I've been thinking that adding class ranks would be a good idea. I think that encourages students to be better and to strive to be in the top rankings.

We are like 50 students for each grade, and I was thinking to just show in the rankings the top 20 students (to not discourage the not so good students). What do you think about this? Is a class ranking really good?

Edit: I researched a little bit and I noticed that some schools are using a percentile method. E.g. tell someone if he/she is top 10%, 25%, 50%, or 75%. This seems like a better method.
