Unsw for cs

Hi everybody, I'm an international student looking to study cs at unsw and would like to ask a few questions regarding unsw's undegrad for cs.How is the course quality like? Is it the best school for cs in australia? Are there internship opportunities despite the new trimester system? I heard many bad news about how unsw is just focused on milking international student which caused the course quality and student quality at unsw to drop, to what extent is this true and is unsw still worth going to for cs? Tq in advance for the replies.

(UK) What are my options if I want to completely change my career path while in uni and without support

So I have been trying to find a solution to a big problem that I have and I am not sure if this is the right subreddit but here we go. I am a first year biology student at a russel group uni in London. After a few months at the university I realized that this biology direction is not for me and I want to switch to graphic design. I am not from the UK and I came here as the last year group to be able to have the EU pricing of university in the UK (the 9250£). My parents who live back in my home country pay for my tuition and my housing.

I recently got a part-time job and earn around 900£ a month. To put it simply they do not support my change of mind with my course and won’t support me if I drop out and re apply to something else. They also said that I wouldn’t get into a graphic design course as I don’t have art qualifications. I have an IB diploma (sort of like A levels) with biology, chemistry and english as my higher levels where I got a 6,6,7 (around the same as getting an A,A,A*) My school did not offer any art subjects and that is why I don’t have the qualifications from art. I wanted to apply for graphic design when I had to apply for university but my parents did not let me and since I still lived at home at the time I didn’t have another choice. I don’t know what to do because I am financially unstable without them, currently uneducated to get a job that pays more, feel lost in a foreign country on my own and I don’t know how the university system works in the UK.

Educational Psychology Questions

What do you guys think about the following true or false questions:

1). Primary grade children tend to learn less efficiently than older children do.

2). Students generally understand how much they know about a topic.

3). To increase students’ motivation to learn, teachers should praise as much as possible.

4). An individual with a low/average IQ score should not have the same goals/expectations as his/her grade level peers.

5). Theories of multiple intelligence tell us that each individual has a particular learning style that must be identified and emphasized for learning to occur.

What life advice would you give to high school seniors?

We're finishing the year. I normally don't just impart wisdom as the sage from the stage, but we are finishing the year with a project where everybody in the class researches a life skill and teaches the class (e.g. how to do taxes). I wanted to model this each day with some life advice in different categories:

  1. College life
  2. Friends and relationships
  3. Financial advice
  4. General life skills

What would you share in any of the above categories? Or other categories I don't have listed?

What supports do students at four-year colleges receive and which are most effective?

A lot of research that gets mentioned in the popular press and in academia focuses on how students of color (especially Black, Hispanic, and Native American students) lag behind academic and postgraduate outcomes compared to their White (and Asian) counterparts. These gaps persist despite every student having access to the same support services (e.g., academic supports, career services/counselors, etc.).

Is there any research on racial differences in support service use at universities? Furthermore, do researchers know which support services are most effective or associated with the best outcomes for students generally and students of color specifically?

When I refer to support services, I am thinking about 1) career counselors/centers that help students prepare for the job market during their senior year and help them acquire internships in prior years; 2) programs like TRIO but for the job market instead of graduate school preparation; and 3) affinity groups like multicultural services or organizations.

Advice please: as we approach the fun times of hiring, resigning, etc, I am caught between two jobs that have unique benefits, and naturally, detriments.

So I have been offered an instructional coaching job in a district my wife works for. This job would pay around $55k and I would gain valuable experience and continue to build the relationships that I have with those in that district. The dilemma is that I have an interview for a teaching job in another district that would pay around $80k. Should I choose the teaching position, I may sour some of the relationships I have built in my wife’s district.

Also to note: We have a 20 month old child and may move to another state after this year.

Anyone have advice or questions that may help me make a decision?

What are the necessary actions/changes that would need to take place to fundamentally change the education system in America?

I know. This is a loaded question. If taking it state by state is a better alternative for whatever reason, that works too for a response.

Fundamentally change the education system in America is rather vague. Some "goals" I have in mind would be salary increases, equal opportunity regardless of SES, reworking of standardized testing, standards in general, testing in general, overarching goals for students and educators. What are your thoughts?

IEP question

Hello, I've searched the internet looking for answers to a specific question about and IEP. I came across this Subreddit, in an attempt to get answers to my most pressing question about an IEP. If you need some clarification, I'm in the state of North Carolina. I was told an IEP is a national/federal document, and thus the rules should be the same across various states (I don't know if this is true or not).

Here is my Question:

Is it possible for a student to have an IEP, that states that the student will do half as many assignments as the non-IEP students? For example: The class is required to complete six pages from an Algebra math book. Is it possible for the student with the IEP to be assigned 3 random pages from the same math book?

Why am I asking such a question?

My friends child, is on the spectrum, has ADHD, and has an IEP. The child continues to score low grades (even though extra time is given to complete the assignment(s). My friend believes that lowering the amount of assignments is more beneficial than having extra time to complete the same amount of assignments as the non-IEP students.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Petitions gone bad

Yes this is a repost from r/college

So I had taken Anatomy/Physiology 1 (BIO-13) and have top registration priority for next semester. So pretty much in order to take this Anatomy/Physiology 2 combined class (BIO-14) which is offered at my college, I have to had taken a basic Chem class. However, I had taken General Chemistry 1A/1B (the chem classes before O.C) and got A's in both. However again... I had to make a petition to override the Prerequisite for BIO-14 because I had just switched to a RN from a bio major. The petition takes roughly 10 business days and it's awful to hear that cause I did not know I needed to petition the class till now and the BIO-14 class has a total capacity of 132 students for fall and I feel unlikely I am going to get in. Pretty much I just need this BIO-14 class and BIO-15 (Microbiology) to apply for nursing programs and fear I am unable to get into the BIO-14 class.

I seriously feel like shit cause I worked so hard for that priority and to get behind just a semester likely had ruined my hopes, can anyone advise me if I am still good to apply for nursing programs (RN) in Spring 2023 for California schools like CSU or community colleges?? I am most likely done in Fall 2022 for both courses if I am unable to get into the class next fall.

The explanation for all this is because I have been bullied and been into a lot of shit in this town and I suffer through trauma and depression pretty much everyday and still living where I am right now does not help at all, I have no friends here and really only people I talk to would be at work. So I am trying to transfer as fast as I can whether if I have to continue somewhere else or not, I just want clarity of all this. My counselors take forever to respond and it's really not helping me.

Q&A session with Stanford Prof on sleep, light, circadian rhythm - for sleep timing in teens

Science of Sleep series

Submission statement: Hi everyone, we host these weekly sessions with the best sleep researchers in the world and this week's is with Stanford prof Dr. Jamie Zeitzer. His research focuses on sleep/light/circadian rhythms - specifically for shift workers, jet lag, and sleep timing in teenagers ie. school start times. They're an interview/talk format and then open the floor for questions in the second half hour.

We thought this might be of interest to this community as far as education for teens goes. It'll also likely be interesting personally - we had our first session this week and it went SO well, so wanted to share this here as it's on topic and I think potentially interesting. Let me know if you'd like to come!

Continue studying online degree (2nd year) or start over at Kings College London?

Hey guys,

I’m currently studying BSc Banking and Finance online at University of London International Programmes, however, I’m not enjoying it at all. I, thus, applied for a second year transfer (international) to LSE and first year entry into Kings College London. Got rejected from LSE and have an unconditional from KCL. I originally never wanted to start over coz I thought it was crazy, but now that I’m rejected from lse, and really really don’t want to study online for two more years, I’m wondering if I should start over at KCL. Could you guys advice on what should I do? I’m unable to decide. I’ll be turning 21 this year and all my friends will graduate while I start Univeristy now( if I go to KCL). And I feel I’ll be too old to graduate by 2024. Do you guys think it’s worth spending an extra year at uni for better quality education, on-campus life, London life, internships, better opportunities, etc. what do u guys think?

Thanks in advance 🙂

College will not provide proof of degree or unofficial transcript because of balance due

In my LAST semester in 2015, I received word mid-semester that my financial aid was depleted. I was halfway done, almost at graduation. The college “allowed” me to graduate. I just applied for a part time online ESL job and they need proof of my bachelor’s degree. They can take a signed official statement OR transcript. The college will not release my official transcript, which I expected, but they also will not even provide me official proof that I earned a degree at all. Are they allowed to deny me this? And even deny me access to my unoffical transcript?

How do I stop feeling so bitter about my friends test results?

I (F16) should’ve done my GCSEs this year but they were cancelled, and are now evidence based (our teachers use evidence, eg mocks, class work, to give us a grade). Tbh I’ve always done very well academically, my October mocks I got all 8s and 9s in every subject.

This friend, “Abbie”, is also very academic, but in a way that I’ve always found a bit annoying. It’s almost like her entire personality is based off how smart she is, she knows a lot of general knowledge and is the type of person that speaks/uses vocabulary more like a 40 year old woman than a 16 year old girl. She got a vary of results in November, from a fail to a grade 8. We’re good friends, but it’s always felt a bit competitive between us in who will do better academically, and whenever I do better (which, honestly, is usually) she says everything possible to make me feel stupid or embarrass me.

Most schools are using the 2020 papers as a last set of papers for final evidence towards our grade. My problem is that Abbie is finding all the papers, lying about it, doing extremely well and acting really smug about it. She did this in the last set of mocks (I know because I sit next to her in a lesson, before the exam i saw her scrolling through a paper and when I asked what it was, she told me it was a mark scheme for a past paper in a different subject. When we went into the exam there was a diagram on the paper that I saw over her shoulder), but didn’t do as well.

Our mocks aren’t for another couple of weeks, but I can guarantee that Abbie’s ‘revision’ is going to be memorising the mark schemes and she’ll end up with grade 9s, no doubts. I think maybe I’m just being bitter, but it upsets me that I actually deserve these high grades and she’s just going to cheat and get them, and then lie about how she got them. It sounds horrible but I don’t think I could bare it if she did better - I’d never hear the end of it.

How can I stop being bitter? I don’t want to cheat but the closer we get to exams the more I’m tempted just because of Abbie.

Did I say something wrong to my teachers?

I am taking a Computer Science class and since I didn't do well on my midterm I wanted to ask a few questions about the final. When class ended I turned my mic on and I was quiet for a bit because someone else was in the class and I didn't want to reveal to that person that I didn't do well on the midterm so I sat there for maybe a good 20-30 secs with my mic on before asking my question.

Then I asked if the class practice problems had solutions and one of the teachers said yes it's on the website. then I asked if there was a lot of space on the exam since running out of space was a problem for me. She said there will be a normal a mount of white space then another teacher mentioned that I should use a separate sheet of paper.

Then I asked if I could have the the practice exams earlier and I told them that my time next week will be rough and they say there quietly for maybe 10 seconds with a strange face and one of them said that they'll send them out the end of this week. I was quiet for maybe 5-10 seconds then I said ok and that that's all and they had this weird look on their face and i'm not sure why. Did I say something off limits?

Educational games suggestions

Hi all.

Does anyone know of any free interactive educational games?

Something like BBC iReporter or Food chain challenge

Preferably something relatively short and for older/high school level kids and/or adults, and maybe, like the BBC games, suitable for phone and pc. This is needed for my thesis on educational media.

Thanks!

Research paper MLA citation

Hey everyone. I’m writing a research paper. I want to cite a government report. I tried googling it and it seems like I’m not suppose to add a link to that report. Still I wanted to make sure is this the correct way of citing a government report in MLA format?

This is the link to the report

https://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_welfare/annual-reports/Annual-Report-Summaries-State-Pain-FY18.pdf

And this is how I’m citing it :

USDA. (Italics)Annual report animal usage by fiscal year.(italics) 2020.

Another question,

Do I add a Conclusion heading or just start conclusion without a heading?

Thank you!

What resources are used to support high school college/career guidance counselors?

Hi everyone, I've read a lot about overburdened guidance counselors so I was curious to see what resources they are using to support students. Any comments around how they are used would be great too. Thanks in advance!

What can we learn from online streaming experiences like TWITCH and transpose it educationally in the classroom!

I've already come to the conclusion that using a broadcaster for an online class can simplify enourmously certain presentations and transitions.

It's so nice to be able to teach from multiple camera's, transitioning between them effortlesly and choosing what part of the computer to display at what time. All things game streamers all try to do.

If you watch a lot of streams or you teach a whole lot online? What are your ideas to help the whole of us online "emergency" teachers out.

Here are some things I figured out to be usefull!

- Xsplit or OBS

This one is the big one in my mind, Having control of your display by choosing to show either a camera, a screen or a camera and a screen or any composition of them really helps with making an experience which is more fun and clear to follow. Kids are already used to watching these types of videos and people. It will help them retain the information. Big downside is you can't really do all this from a laptop. You need a good desktop

These next one work from any computer
- Google Classroom

Shout out to 2 features ,

  1. Giving each student a unique copy of a google doc, sheet or slide is AMAZING. The interface to be able to correct them is the best I've seen
  2. Hosting a unique and safe live video meeting link for your students.

- Kahoot

Fun tool to create quizes that are nice to help consolidate information in minds

- Classcraft

Teaching explicitly how to take good actions in a day to day life is critical to the sucess of any classroom, Classcraft is really good for that. Boss battles are a nice atlernative and fresh alternative to Kahoot

- Google Slides

Creating présentations that host a video and then 2 - 3 question slides on that video and than another video and then 2-3 question slides looks to be a very high efficiency solution for learning.

- Google Sheets

Using conditionnal formats to make "pop up" exercices

Exemple : It's in French / Make yourself a copy to try it

Good luck yall

Online peer tutoring

So I just wanted opinions on this idea, our school does peer tutoring but they've been looking to change it because it isn't working very well.

So my proposal is that we shift it to Discord because it's able to be easily monitored, I was given the green light by a teacher that runs a tutoring program, but he said that I would have to take it up with administration first before we do anything.

What do you think makes peer tutoring effective? Is it possible to effectively do online?

I created a large student survey last summer (450 redditors participated) and am back with survey #2

If you check my post history you'll see that I circulated a student survey last summer across various college subreddits. About 450 students participated, and the survey data was written up in a Medium Piece.

Now that we've been in the pandemic for over a year, I'd love to get some more feedback from students browsing through /r/education. If any educators who find this survey interesting would be willing to pass it along to some of their students, that would be immensely appreciated as well. The first survey was largely about the difficulties of adjusting to the pandemic, while this one is focused more on how the pandemic has impacted mental health and mentorship, as well as whether you feel that your campus is supportive of students who want to pursue independent projects (e.g. startups, creative endeavors, on-campus initiatives, etc.). All responses are anonymous (no personal info is collected) and you can opt whether to have your responses included in the write-up.

If anyone has questions, please feel free to ask. And if anyone wants a copy of the raw data when it's ready, PM me and I'll add your name to the list.

Thanks so much - and good luck with midterms/finals!

Kickstart scheme

Hello I was wondering if anyone could help answer a question about the kickstart scheme.

I am aware it is aimed at young people aged 16-24 who are currently claiming universal credit but are there any specific requirements to be accepted? (Do you need a certain amount of GCSEs for example).

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Plans for switching schools midyear

So I'll keep this short. We're building a new house in another state and we found out today that due to delays, we are looking at around October to move in.

We have three kids in elementary school. Two of them are doing home school now (covid), and #3 will be starting kindergarten in the fall.

If you were going to move several months into the school year but in a different state, what would you do for your kids? Homeschool in original state? Go to local school here until the move? Try to see if we can homeschool via a program in the new state (is that even possible?). We obviously aren't renting in our new state until the close for cost reasons.

Just wondering what others are thinking and/or have done in this situation. What's best for the kids emotionally and educationally? They are great students so we're not worried about them being unable to catch up on the course work or anything, but also want to make this easy on them. Especially our youngest, who would have to start 2 schools in less than 3 months.

Canadian job market for Computer Science

My brother is deciding between University of Minnesota Twin Cities in the US and University of Alberta in Canada. A major factor he is concerned about is getting permanent residency (PR) after graduation. He’s been advised to get a Canadian degree over an American one to make PR possible potentially. What we have heard about CS in the US is that jobs are plenty and pay well, but we don’t know as much about Canada. I was wondering, what do the career prospects in Canada look like? Is it promising? Also, by any chance, do you know if there are good internship opportunities in U of Alberta or in the Alberta province?

Hoping some of you have experience/know of the employment opportunities there. Thank you so much, any input would be greatly appreciated.

As a High School Senior About to Graduate, I Want to Say Some Things

As a senior in high school about to graduate from a public school in Texas, the whole public education system is so far in the toilet that I don’t think there is hope. Nothing has changed for a very long time from when schools were designed to condition people for factory work and keep them out of trouble. There are so many issues stemming from home upbringing as well. Many parents see school as a place where their children’s teachers are babysitters, and that same attitude carries into high school. Some children, including my peers, constantly harass teachers who are trying to do their best, but cannot due to the heinous entourage of adolescent indecency in the classroom, making it a miserable experience for people there who want to learn. There are charter and private schools, however, many people can’t afford to send their children to them. Also, they are so geared in the complete opposite direction when it comes to stress levels and workload. With standardized testing (state specific, Collegeboard, ACT, etc), I feel as if it does not benefit students in the slightest, and promotes mental illness, rather than learning. People who don’t do well on these tests for whatever reason are deemed unintelligent and worth less than their peers who pass, starting in elementary school in some cases. There’s no middle ground of orderliness, affordability, discipline, mental stability, and specialized education in any type of school. I understand that there are different elements that play into this, such as immigration, drug use, teen pregnancy, push for college education, etc. It’s terribly sad. Parents, you can tell me that I’m lying, but as an 18-year-old, I’m telling you my perspective.

Is there anything that educators can see on the horizon that are major changes addressing anything I brought up? I copied the above text from a comment I left on someone complaining about the STAAR tests on r/texas. I look forward to your replies, and I thank you in advance for being civil and productive in the discussion from this post.

Acountability partner concept in education.

If a student(you) partnered with somebody of same level that assigned with the same task you have such as completing a book, would it be valuable to make them share their progress to each other in terms of performance of the task?

For an example: where you are reporting how many pages have you read for that day and your accountability partner does the same. This way you are being held accountable on daily basis and you would have have track record your progress other than yourself.

I was thinking about this concept lately, it feels like sharing your progress gives you a bit of a pride and doing it consistently might provide a good feedback loop.

We're used to the idea of a September to June calendar for elementary school and high school. College and University is pretty similar. Will it (and should it) always be this way? Could something better be done in the post-Covid world?

In light of the Pandemic, are there any proposals worth considering that would be alternatives to the way we schedule academic studies throughout the year now? How about year-round school availability, meaning smaller class sizes, more flexibility, but no one having to be there all year long?

What happens after I sign my leaver’s paperwork? (UK)

Sorry if this is the wrong subreddit for this but I was hoping someone with a better understanding of the UK college system could help me out.

For context I (17f) want to change courses from my town’s local sixth form college to a specialist agricultural college. I’ve been accepted onto the new course and all my paperwork has gone through, meaning all that’s left to do now is sign my leaver’s forms. However, the new course doesn’t start until September 2021 and it’s not even May yet so I don’t know what the protocol is in terms of when I can stop attending my current courses. Most of my lessons at the moment are doing mini assessments working towards A-Levels that I won’t be doing in 2022, so can I just stop going in now?

[TL;DR] starting a new college course in September, once my paperwork is signed can I stop attending my current college or do I have to wait till the end of the year?

Performance Pressure in the education system

I would love to hear your opinions about the constant pressure put on students (in school and uni and any educational institution).

Every learning unit is traversed by tests and exams which make learning uncomfortable and devalue the learning progress if a certain grade is not achieved. I am very aware of the fact that there must be some kind of exam to identify the skill level in order to get jobs after the education period in life. But why must it always be the „all or nothing“ kind of big exam at the end? How about small practical and varying projects throughout the school year/semester to keep the attention span and involvement of the students high and give them more than one chance to show their skills? It would also minimize exam anxiety - a factor that has many students perform badly and get bad grades which stain their opportunities in life for ever, even though they know the content well.

What are your opinions on this?

Permanent residency (PR) after undergrad

Hi,

My brother is an incoming freshman majoring in Computer Science and he is deciding between colleges in US & Canada, specifically, University of Minnesota Twin Cities & University of Alberta. He is an international student, so PR is a major factor in this decision. Currently, he wants to settle in Canada after graduating from college. He's interested in working in research over office jobs post grad.

He was told by his academic advisor that it is easier to get Permanent Residency in Canada with a Canadian degree than it is with a US degree. This goes against what I've heard so far, as someone with an American degree, also the said advisor is not someone I trust a lot, tbh. Was wondering if anyone here could help me with this as my brother is going crazy, he needs to accept by May 1st.

Thank you so much for reading so far.

For ambitious students only (project starting during summer holidays)

I came up with an idea to make knowledge more interesting and more accessible for younger generations. I am 17 and I'm looking for a group of students in similar age, passionate about science topics, wanting to create educational content on YT in a form of cartoon (artist/animator will probably be hired). Specifically I'm looking for people wanting to make educational content on:

-Mathematics

-Computer Science

-Physics

-Chemistry

-Biology

-Astronomy/Astrophysics

-(I will be doing machine learning / AI)

Every person will have their own channel, but on the internet we will function as a one group. Narrative of the story plotted into this project will be explained during a meeting in discord.

If you are interested please leave a comment with a suitable time for you to meet and discuss this idea.

If you are an artist or animator (professional or not) and want to contribute to this, also leave a comment with a suitable time for a meeting.

After you leave the comment i'll try to contact you as soon as possible. I hope we can make the world a better place.

Do universities have a set curriculum?

I have recently started teaching at a university, and I am always surprised at how they let me do whatever I want. Why is there no set curriculum?

Why does it vary vastly from teacher to teacher? Some teachers put on a 30 minute youtube video and sit at the back of the room. Other teachers seem to have no plan but talk a lot. Some do a lot of book work or reading.

Why is there not one established method?

In California, there is a high correlation to the percentage of Hispanic students to standardized school tests and ranking.

The higher percentage of Hispanic students, the lower the tests and school ranking.

I’m doing a study and a thesis paper on understanding this phenomenon and identifying solutions our schools and communities can take to fix it (if it is a problem to be fixed).

Those in the educational sector, would love you thoughts on this topic. And those of Hispanic background, are there reasons that the general public may be unaware of that may contribute to this data? Cultural values? Socioeconomic issues?

Thanks all.

Is An Online Education Right for You?

Is An Online Education Right for You?

We live in the data age. We have become so used to data at the speed of light that the possibility of not having prompt admittance to endless quantities of raw numbers with the simple snap of a couple of catches for a considerable lot of us is essentially perturbing. Consequently, it just bodes well that there are numerous individuals the country over and all throughout the planet that are accepting the possibility of internet learning and instructive freedoms with each ounce of eagerness they can gather.

Simultaneously there are equivalent quantities of individuals all throughout the planet who are attempting urgently to clutch customary strategies for managing certain things. Truth be told, a few group in reality actually play solitaire with a deck of playing a game of cards. For individuals who feel that the data age has abandoned them somewhat the odds are very acceptable that web based learning may not be the best accessible choice for you.

8 Practical Tips To Level Up Your Online Class

From 2019 until now, I’ve been helping a fast-growing EduTech startup in Indonesia namely RevoU to teach their students about Content Marketing.

Since Feb 2021, I’ve decided to join the company full time, to build the in-house content marketing team while continuing to become one of the instructors for their full-stack digital marketing program.

Teaching online is not an easy task, especially when you have 50+ students.

It requires a lot of practice and creative thinking to make sure the class is fun and engaging, but at the same time, people learn something from it.

As Richard Feynman says "Students don't need a perfect teacher. Students need a happy teacher, who's gonna make them excited to come to school and grow a love for learning."

In this post, I’m trying to break down all the learnings and share with you 8 short but practical tips on how to level up your next online class session.

Let’s jump to the point!

#1 Always simplify your language and terminology

Things that we always do on a day-to-day basis (as a lecturer or instructor) might seem “simple” and self-explanatory to us, but not to others, especially when they are learning it for the first time.

Explain it in a more structured way, use simple and relatable examples, and always check if everyone understands.

#2 Personalize your approach to the students

Try to give some personalized approach to the students to let them know that you are here to help them, not just to complete your task.

For me, 1 day before the class, I message the students one by one to say hi, to introduce myself, and to let them know that I’m super excited to meet them..

This will take less than 30 sec of your time but will give a huge motivational boost to your students.

Be very explicit that your role here is to help the students and to learn from one another.

#3 Make Small Quiz, Games & Ask Questions

“To teach is to learn twice” - Joseph Joubert

Once you are done explaining one theory of concept, test your students' understanding with a small quiz or game.

We will understand more when we can explain what we learn.

Teaching is about two ways of communication, ask your students to share their opinions. Embrace and appreciate different points of view.

#4 Learn to tell small jokes & laugh with your students

“Monkey See, Monkey do”

When your students see you laugh and have fun during the class, indirectly they will replicate your energy and enjoy your class more.

The more they enjoy your class, the more they will learn from it.

#5 Learn to openly receive & give constructive feedback

Proactively ask for feedback from students / the class manager: a) what went well? & b) what can be done better?

In the next class session, thank them for sharing their feedback and make some adjustments based on the given input.

When you are giving feedback to your students, make it super explicit that it is because you care for their growth. If the feedback is hard, do it in private.

Give detailed explanations + examples. Also, share your thoughts on how you can help them to improve.

#6 Celebrate wins & learnings

Whenever your students do something good when presenting their task, sharing their opinions, asking questions, or complimenting others, make sure they know that you notice that and celebrate it.

A simple one is by saying: “Nice one!”; “That’s a good question”; “Thanks for doing it!

#7 Set up your environment

The students will interact with you using their laptops or smartphones. They will only see your face & hear your voice through an online meeting.

Make sure they can see you & hear your voice. Few things you can do:

Set your camera on the same level as your eyes. Not too high, not too low.

Make sure you have good lighting. Don’t sit behind a too-bright light, as this might cause backlight.

If possible, invest in a good microphone. If not, make sure you use your headphones.

#8 Share extra learning sources

Whenever you find a good Book/ Article/ Video/ Audio that you think will help the students grow, do share it with them and give a short explanation of what they can learn from it.

At the end of the day, our role as a teacher/ instructor is to help our students to learn something new & enjoy the learning process.

Regardless of the situation (offline or online) we need to always find a way to make the learning process more enjoyable for the students!

US vs UK in terms of ease of settlement, job prospects, finances and student life. Unis compared: Drexel, Bristol & Warwick (top choice)

What’s good y’all just wanted to clear smth up. Why do a lot of international student hate the UK??? I see so many comments on forums deterring ppl from goin to the UK saying stuff like “Don’t go to the UK”, “Why do ppl even go to the UK”, “UK is a hungry beast”(???lol). Is it rly THAT bad? I’ve applied to and got accepted to a couple of good unis in both US and UK and rn after looking at a lot of such comments I’m reconsidering my UK choices. Out of all my offers, I’m considering Drexel University in the US, University of Bristol and University of Warwick in the UK (although I’ve yet to receive a decision from Warwick).

For me, the most important thing is being able to stay/settle and work wherever I go. Coming back to my country after graduation is NOT an option for me- I cannot emphasize that enough. I plan on studying Accounting & Finance and go on to work in the professional services sector/business sector in general and thus, Warwick is my top choice (given that I get in) since it’s one of the best of the best for business. That being said, what would the route/process look like for a student studying in that area from the above mentioned unis wanting to stay and work in the UK after graduation? With the new PSW Graduate scheme, would I be naive in thinking that I’ll be able to get a decent job straight out of Uni within those 2 years included in the PSW and be able to stay and work in the UK eventually towards ILR? Also, how does UK compare to the US in terms of ease of settlement and job prospect for international undergrad students?

Also looking for comparison between the unis if there are any current/former students. Ik Drexel has a unique coop program which will give me work experience and thus help my job prospects and they will also provide me some financial aid. However, Bristol and Warwick is ranked way better than Drexel with Warwick Business School being a legend in the business realm and one of the most targeted unis by graduate employers in the UK, better teaching quality and support but a worse social life than Bristol. But I’m willing to spend a few quiet nights if it means going to Warwick will give me better job prospects than Bristol. However I should mention that I like the holistic approach of US education system rather than UK’s exam focused system.

From a finance perspective, all 3 unis are pretty much in the same range for me with Drexel being maybe the slightly cheaper option but it isn’t guaranteed that all their coops will be paid so that’s an uncertainty.

I preciate anyone taking the above mentioned points into consideration and giving their perspective either from experience or knowledge.

Need expert reviewers to review project result

Hi all,

My name is Kushel Ramanayake, and I am a current 4th undergraduate at Informatics Institute of Technology affiliated with University of Westminster UK. As part of my Final Year Thesis, I am required to gather some feedback on my project. The project I have developed generates questions automatically from a text document such as a PDF. I am in need of reviewers to go over some sample questions and validate the quality of the questions generated. The reviewers need to be experts of a certain subject i.e. an English teacher will review questions generated from English subject matter.

PROCEDURE

You may send me a PDF document of your choice or I'll select a suitable one within the relevant domain, and I will generate the questions and send you an spreadsheet to fill. Each questions will be marked as either valid/invalid and those valid will be given a rating 1-10 to gauge the quality.

No personal information other than maybe name and occupation will be collected.

Thank you in advance,

Kushel Ramanayake

Hi,

USA:

University of Minnesota Twin Cities

Indiana University Bloomington

Michigan State University

CANADA:

University of Alberta

UBC Okanagon

What could I do if every one of my universities rejected me?

I don’t know if I just got unlucky or if there’s something wrong with my application but all the UCs that I have applied to have rejected me. My grades are good but maybe I just applied to too many impacted majors. Anyways, what should I do if this happens? Do I just continue taking classes at a community college until I can apply again? Or maybe just take a job in the meantime and have a gap before applying?

All civil unrest stems from failed education

The current American political landscape has devolved into egoic position defending rather than honest open discussions about real solutions to real issues. If this trend continues without any intervention, there might be devastating consequences. For this reason, I am here to address what I believe to be the core of our turmoil.

I truly believe that all of this division is from a lack of understanding. Understanding different religions, cultures, philosophies, even art forms. In order to solve this lack of understanding, honest discussions that do not involve egoic positions need to be cultivated, starting in schools.

Now before I propose all the changes to the curriculum, I must say that each class will have a major shift from work towards the discussion. There will still be work that is done, videos to watch, and maybe test to be taken. But there is far too much emphasis on passing the test rather than learning the information for the sake of curiosity. Maybe this is a failure to create an engaging curriculum.

Our mental health is one of the most important aspects of our lives, arguably THE most important aspect. Our entire view of reality stems from our thoughts. Why is this insanely important aspect of life entirely overlooked in school? It should be the core of schooling. Teach us major philosophical ways of thinking from stoicism to Buddhism, to nihilism. Give us assignments asking us how we feel about the views on reality being spoken about. Let's come together and build upon the foundation that has been set for us.

Learn about different psychotherapy techniques, and meditations. Let's talk about a fixed vs growth mindset, allowing kids to understand from a young age that they are capable of almost anything they put their minds to. The key fact in this is to make them understand that failure is a normal part of the growth process. So-called "failure" is often where we learn the most.

This can turn into a real open discussion, from a young age, in late elementary school. The discussion simply has to be engaging. In order to make it engaging, we can relate what we are learning to everyday life.

Getting children used to the idea of discussing topics will build a foundation that they will use throughout their entire lives. Allowing them to see people as people, and not as a certain group. Whether that group is racial, gender, or political, seeing the world in this "deadened" form leads to deep loneliness and confusion. We need to teach children that the world is exactly what it looks like, and not how people like to talk about it.

We need to talk about bullying behavior, why it exists, and how we can handle it. Understanding that other's words are not always true. Gaining a deeper knowing and appreciation of yourself will allow you to trudge through this mud unscathed.

Let's learn about cultures from all around the earth. From history to art, to science and philosophy. If we had a better understanding of the variety of cultures on earth, we may gain a deeper appreciation for each other.

When it comes to drug and sex education, I believe this is the area in dire need of improvement.

In drug education, they blatantly lie to us in order to scare us off of these experiences. They tell us that acid will melt your brain and you will get addicted to ecstasy from the moment you try it. Yes, addiction is a very real issue that needs to be discussed, but lying to us is not the way to do it. Psychedelics have a huge potential in having a lasting positive impact on people's lives. Why is this never said? Why are these plants so overtly demonized? We need people who have actually tried these drugs to come in and talk about their experiences. We need to hear both sides in order to have a better understanding of what these drugs do.

Sweeping this under the rug is no longer possible. People will do drugs regardless of how much you try and scare them away. We need to know how to do them properly, safely, and minimize addictive mindsets. Current rap music is glorifying these substances while schools are demonizing them. The truth is somewhere in the middle.

On the topic of addiction, we need to explain the psychological mechanism behind it. Knowing how addiction affects the brain is an important step in overcoming it. Phone addiction, social media, youtube, tv, all need to be talked about. Students need to feel comfortable sharing their addiction stories.

More on addiction... The sugar problem. Obesity is rampant. We are overfed and lacking real nutrients. Nutrition class needs to be mandatory and engaging.

On sex. Porn addiction has taken men by storm and is leading to a very real and serious issue. People are sexually drained. People are overly stimulated and are abusing their bodies. This throws everything out of whack and can lead to much greater issues. The sexual energy that we have is the most powerful force in the animal kingdom. It literally creates life. When this energy is spent on a phone screen every night, we are drained. Lacking creativity and drive to exercise. This creates a vicious downward spiral. This certainly needs to be discussed especially in high school. There are a lot of dissatisfied women due to this issue. Porn focuses solely on the visual aspect of sex. This fixation leads to a lack of connection with the body and the partner.

Now, taking a huge 180. Let's talk about STEM. The field that got us to the moon, and gave us these insanely small computers. This is real magic. However, STEM in current schools is so disconnected from this awesome reality, that it is incredibly boring to most students. We never get to do engineering until high school or college, and by then, most people already dislike math. People would be much more engaged in learning math if they had a better grasp on the implications of said math. We can literally fly to mars, create self duplicating robots, and make cars that drive themselves.

I could go on about this forever, but I do not want to write a whole book right here. This is just a brief overview of some ideas that have been festering in my mind for a bit.

Please, share your thoughts and ideas. Criticize these ideas in a productive manner and add your own. Thank you everyone, hope we can build a better future for all of us :)

Pursuing in computer information systems or computer science or cyber security or computer forensic: which one is better?

I always been fond of computers. I’ve only taken basic computer classes but want to further my knowledge and skills. I already have an associate degree in health information technology and its quite different from a computer career field. I do enjoy it but also want to set myself with another career path as a backup.

Something that interests or focused on is data inputting or data capturing. Investigate basic computer issues and fixing it etc. I’m really interested in retrieving data files or investigating cyber crimes.

The more I look into it I found computer forensics and/or cyber security interesting. Is it the same field as computer information systems?

The coding aspect of it seems a bit difficult. I’m not good at math and programming seems interesting but hard at the same time, but I want to learn and improve on getting better at it as well.

Can anyone help me tell the difference between computer information systems vs computer science vs cybersecurity vs computer forensics.

Can anyone as well direct me to education websites I go to learn more about it? I mean what websites can I learn basic knowledge with assignments before actual pursing the field?

What’s an introductory course for it? I want to take one course online before pursing it.

I apologize for being all over the place. I’m eager to know and ready gain new knowledge and skills. I really like learning.

Thank you so much in advance.

Failure school districts should shut down

An example I can think of are the public schools in Detroit. They are a poor excuse failure of a school district because the kids aren’t learning. All they do is waste the taxpayers’ money. Instead, the kids should be transported to a school district in a nearby suburb.

Would you live close to where you work?

Hi,

I’m moving to a new elementary school in a new state. There are a lot of good apartment buildings very close to the school , some that are walking distance, and one that’s right across the street.

Would you live close to where you work? I’m not sure how I feel about the chance of possibly seeing my students all the time or having one as a neighbor. Your thoughts?

My friend can’t go to the college she wants because of travel cost

(I’m from the UK so college isn’t uni in this context)

My entire friend group is going to the same college after secondary school apart from this one girl who can’t afford the travel. She lives in a village quite a way out from our town, and the college is quite a way away from the town anyway. She worked out that travel there and back each year would be about £1500, and her mum earns around £500 over the limit for travel bursaries so she can’t get any financial aid and her mum just can’t afford it.

She’s one of the most intelligent people I’ve ever met and it makes me so sad that she’s stuck going to our local college (which, honestly, isn’t that great) when she deserves so much more.

It’s so unfair she can’t be with the rest of us just because of travel costs. I wish there was something I could do to help :(

Penn Foster graduate wanting to get into a university

I stopped going to high school after my freshman year, and I got my high school diploma through the online school Penn Foster. I never thought I would ever want to go to college because I always hated school when I was younger, but recently I’ve wanted to get a degree in psychology. I always assumed I would be able to get into a university with my diploma, but I found out that lots of universities don’t accept a Penn Foster diploma because of the credits required for most schools. I only got 1 credit for a foreign language my freshman year, and most colleges require 2. I also never did Algebra 2. If I go to a community college and do all my prerequisites, will I be able to transfer to a university? Or will the high school credits I didn’t complete still matter?

Why do people not seem to be talking about these issues with the education system?

-Overemphasis on and bias about facts, details, depth, rules, known, communication, factual memorization, reason, control

-Under-emphasis on and bias about patterns, connections, concepts, breadth, novelty, understanding, freedom, consumption, visuals, value, emotion

-Disrespect of systems thinking

-Disrespect of long-term, unchanging knowledge (e.g. teaching accounting and finance fundamentals rather than a life skills class)

-Inefficiency

-Biased learning methods

-Disrespect of individuality

-Disrespect of forming one’s own opinion and belief

-Disrespect of emotion and value

-Biased curriculum (e.g. geology is considered important because it's physical and detailed which is perceived as positive to the creators of the curriculum)

-Conflict of interest

-A distorted version of the scientific method is taught with appeal to authority, over-respect of the opinions of others, a lack of questioning of facts and details with imagination, a misunderstanding of credentials, and neglect of probability

-Teachers often talk too much and in a monotone manner

-Poor testing methods

Does a "prestigious" degree matter more in some industries than others?

A question I've been thinking about for a while is whether or not certain industries care more about undergraduate degree prestige than others. People I know seem to think that it matters a lot in some sectors (consulting, finance) and less in others (tech).

I tried to get some data on this by identifying the most prestigious companies in a bunch of industries (for the most part, I used the top five) via the Vault.com rankings. I then used LinkedIn data to see what proportion of their employees had an undergraduate degree from an "Ivy-Plus" school (Ivy League + MIT, Stanford, Duke, and UChicago). The rankings for the industries I looked at are below:

Industry Ivy-Plus Percentage
Law 11.8
Management Consulting 10.4
Internet/Social Media 6.4
Political Lobbying 5.3
Banking 4.9
Entertainment 1.2
Accounting 0.8
Advertising 0.8

You can see more explanation and a breakdown by individual firm here.

This is of course pretty far from a randomized experiment, but I think it's really interesting that there are such big differences between pretty similar fields (ie. Big Three consulting and Big Four accounting). I was also really surprised to see how high tech was, given that Silicon Valley is thought of as being anti-credential.

Does this seem to match up with your perception? Where would other industries fall on this list? LinkedIn data isn't as easy to get for academia, but I suspect it is even more biased towards traditionally prestigious schools.

I mean why can't we integrate Artificial Intelligence into Education? We shouldn't replace teachers rather why can't we use it as a tool to help teachers out?

Non-American educational sources?

Not part of this sub so idk if this post is appropriate, sorry about that! Anyways, the history curriculum in America is clearly biased to show the US as a great, ever-winning country, and this isn't just an American-centric thing; most countries have biased education with some propaganda mixed in. Does anyone know where I can find curriculum materials from other countries so I can see more POVs of American and world history? I'd like to see how different nations teach the same historical events so that I can piece them all together on my own and get better understandings of world conflicts and social movements. Thanks in advance!

I created a lesson on dialogue choices and visual novels using the video game Emily is Away Too. Here's a writeup detailing the activity.

I'm a history and ELA teacher and I very often find ways to bring video games into my classroom. "Emily is Away Too" is the sequel to "Emily is Away". I haven't taught with this second game yet, but I did teach with the first one last year and it was amazing. So I created a new activity based on the second game and am eagerly looking forward to teach with it either at the end of this year if I have time or sometime next year.

Here is a write up detailing the game and how I plan on teaching with it. My lesson plan, handouts, and slides are attached inside for free for those interested.

This is my website Hey Listen Games where I make free lesson plans and curriculum for teaching with video games. I hope you all can find something useful.

Anyone know of or have experience in adult education? Particularly for reading, writing, and math and in Philadelphia

My brother will be graduating high school and struggles with reading, writing, and math.
We've worked with the school counselors etc and have documents confirming this struggle along with requests for accommodations for college etc.

He's hesitant to go straight to college because he struggles with the subjects mentioned above.

My thinking is that if he spent at least a year in an adult education program before attending college, trade school, etc that he will be more likely to succeed.

So my questions are, are there programs such as this either in or close to Philadelphia? And if you participated in one of these programs can you speak to your experience and if you felt it was beneficial? Thank you and any advice is appreciated. My brother will be graduating high school and struggles with reading, writing, and math.

What solutions are being developed or considered to replace standardized testing?

The way I was taught growing up, it felt like there was more importance given to kids scoring well on tests than on actually learning the material. I felt like most of my time was spent memorizing/practicing test problems and by the end of the test I would forget all that I actually learned (or retained very little).

Is it still the same way? What solutions are out there? Which school districts or countries are doing it right and getting good results?

Unfair School Suspension - Please Help

Today and yesterday my mom and I have been going back and forth with our school VP. I was accused of using racial slurs on Instagram ( I don't use the app and haven't used it for a year). The only proof she has of me being the one texting is her client/reporter saying my name. No other evidence besides what the person accusing me is saying. (basically all she has is my name)

Every time we (My mom and I) try to say something she interrupts us. When we do get a chance to talk she brushes off the evidence and either says "not true" or "well that's not enough". It honestly pisses me off how ignorant she is and how bad she is at her job.

The accusation I was being accused of: Being racist towards Asians (screenshots showed "me" saying things about how I support Asian hate crimes and things correlated to that. Keep in mind that I AM ASIAN. (even though I am I was not the one in the screenshots)

Every time we ask her what evidence does she have and she says "I can't tell you that" but proceeds to say we don't have enough when the evidence we are giving is concrete proof that I was not chatting during that time nor do I even have the app.

I think that she is playing favoritism with her client and is being subjective towards me.

Any advice or ways you can help me in this situation? I don't want a suspension on my record.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Why aren’t students who don’t perform at grade level held back?

I’m married to an educator at a title one school. She got her state standardized test results back and actually had the highest scores amongst teachers in her grade with a 48% class average. I don’t mean to sound like an old man, but twenty years ago when I was her students’ age I remember vividly my teachers threatening that if we don’t pass the standardized test, we don’t move on to the next grade. Is that a thing now? You can fail as much as you want, standardized or daily curriculum, and kids will still be booted on to the next grade?

My wife has some students who have literally not turned in a single assignment this semester. She says they will be moving forward. It’s like these kids are being rewarded for not doing any work. Some of them just submit their tests unanswered. Many are at a kindergarten or lower level of reading and show no interest in improvement.

How is this a positive message for children? Don’t do the work and you’ll still be rewarded. Some of your peers busted their asses and did the material only to earn the same rewards as the burnouts. Doesn’t this deter kids who are trying and ultimately result in some of them not working as hard? A little fear and repercussion should be good for them. “Oh if I don’t do this assignment or care then I can’t go on to the next grade with all of my friends.”

My wife’s reasoning is that psychologically, this can be damaging on students to be held back from their peers. But that’s exactly why I think they should be, it will incentivize students to stay together as a group. She also says the major reason is funding. That’s such bull shit if true. What makes you think a kid who can’t add or subtract properly by 6th grade is going to be able to learn prealgebra in a grade or two? I feel like it can be more psychologically damaging to force students in a class where it sounds like a foreign language to them and expect them to succeed.

Look, I’m not trying to get a bunch of students held back. I am generally interested in why this not practiced as commonly anymore and why some believe it to be psychologically damaging. I understand school can be difficult for some individuals and may need extra help. There’s no shame on that. But what I do have a problem with are students who don’t even seem to care. The ones who turn their test in blank, the ones who refuse to do any of the work, the ones who think they can just get handed rewards for doing nothing in life, why are they allowed to move ahead? Why is holding a student back really the last thing a school wants to do when it may be the best thing for that particular student’s education?

What should I pick?

Hello, I am a 16 year old student in the UK and I have only two weeks to make my decision. Due to the fact that I am on the spectrum, my best option that won't lead to doom is sixth form. Unfortunately, my grades are capped for maths and even if I could, I have no way of getting a six.

So my only option is BTEC. I have been offered T level Health and social (Can get 3 A levels) or Health and social BTEC (One A level or a potential double A level) and Business BTEC (One A level). I have no clue as to what I want to do in the future and no matter what path I take if I want to go to university I'll have to take an extra year for a vocational course. What should I pick to have wider opportunities in the future?

Looking for participants in online focus group

Hi everyone,

My names Rebecca and I'm a final year Marketing student at an Irish university. I was just wondering if anyone would be interested in taking part in an online focus group as part of my research for my final year dissertation? It's regarding the trust and acceptance of AI for advertising purposes. It would be run over the course of 7 days with one question posted each day, it will be completely text-based so no video or audio from you is required. Unfortunately, it's unpaid but I think it could be an interesting discussion between you and fellow participants. Most likely it will be run in the next week or two. Any help would be hugely appreciated! Feel free to comment with any questions!

Missouri Legislator introduces amendment to ban all social justice curricula statewide

Representative Nick Schroer (R-O'Fallon) of Missouri is proposing to ban all social justice curricula statewide. His proposal was offered an amendment to a bill that is aimed at not penalizing students for pandemic-related school performance drops.

The proposed amendment goes beyond just banning the 1619 Project Curriculum in schools - it would ban any public or charter school in the state from teaching a social justice curriculum. Some highlights of what gets banned:

  • curriculum that identifies any group as privileged or oppressed
  • curriculum that identifies any institutions as systemically racist, sexist, or biased
  • curriculum that defines a person's identity based on immutable characteristics such as race, income, family of origin, or sexual orientation

It also bans directly Critical Race Theory, the 1619 Project, the Learning for Justice Curriculum of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Teaching Tolerance, We Stories, programs by Educational Equity Consultants, and "similar or successor curricula."

For good measure, it then bans any curriculum that teaches any version of American History that promotes as accurate any of the claims or views presented in the 1619 Project.

College Pre-Requisites

I'm 29. A bit old for Uni but it is what it is. I've decided that it would be good for me socially and for my future success to do Uni.

I'm willing to take loans and a bunch of debt to pay for it if that's what it takes. The issue I'm having is that I was homeschooled. When it came time for Highschool age curriculum, I did a year or so of it and then "dropped out" to get my GED instead as it seemed much more direct and simple than doing four years of high school at home, you just take one test and you have something equal to a HS diploma.

I dont have ANNNNNYYYYY of the pre-requisites that are required for Uni in my state:

4 English courses

Algebra 1 and 2 and Trig/Calc

TWO foreign language courses

several sciences and biology classes

and there is even more shit I cant recall right now.

It would take me 2 years at a community college just to get everything I need to be able to enroll and start working on a BA from a uni. Two years just to get the chance to do four more years... at my age 29 going on 30 I just cant do 6 years of school.

Any advice?

Self sovereign student community where welcomes people that he/she doesn't need and trust central institutions to be educated.

Hello everybody!

Ever since I was a kid, I hated traditional education. It was lacking from many endeavors.

How come we does not primarily learn how to stay healthy, or sane, or contentful/happy? Isn't our general functioning important to results that we are going to follow through?

Aside from that: how traditional education system that enslaves us for 6+ hours where we actually do not learn something that we have to explicitly study to pass the exams? Why are we spending those hours to school that we need to study as if we haven't being educated?

To my understanding, learning in a sense of forming an understanding by internalising the subject does require a lot of reflection instead of taking constant input from the outside world. If this is the case, why do we spend all that money and time on something called "school" just to be a little bit familiar of the subject we are going to study?

I think we are in an age that no one holds centralized monopolistic power on knowledge where sovereign individuals can teach themselves almost anything using right tools with right intentions. I have done it for years. What I was lacking is shortage of accountability and sense of solitude where I was not able to connect with people who does not necessarily have the same interests but same process that enables participants to feel as they are in a community that shares same principles.

I decided to create that community of learners. The learners that leverages the power of computers where we are holding in our bags and pockets with softwares those create x1000 leverage than traditional sense of using books taking notes and creating mindmaps.

First principal of this group is the create a community of sovereign learners leveraged with technology, the second stage would be that creating a Blockchain Decentralized Autonomous Organization where sovereign people would gave governance powers over a highly educated community/society.

Forgive me, the second stage is a long term goal.

I would like to connect with people who are/or wants to be a sovereign learner with a good lifestyle choices that connected of a community where people share the same principles.

If you want to join the discord group, send a private message. We are just starting and forming this community and all feedbacks are appreciated as they are appreciated under this post.

Let's learn and grow together in a decentralized intentional way where we truly learn things instead of rote memorization!
