Missouri Legislator introduces amendment to ban all social justice curricula statewide

Representative Nick Schroer (R-O'Fallon) of Missouri is proposing to ban all social justice curricula statewide. His proposal was offered an amendment to a bill that is aimed at not penalizing students for pandemic-related school performance drops.

The proposed amendment goes beyond just banning the 1619 Project Curriculum in schools - it would ban any public or charter school in the state from teaching a social justice curriculum. Some highlights of what gets banned:

  • curriculum that identifies any group as privileged or oppressed
  • curriculum that identifies any institutions as systemically racist, sexist, or biased
  • curriculum that defines a person's identity based on immutable characteristics such as race, income, family of origin, or sexual orientation

It also bans directly Critical Race Theory, the 1619 Project, the Learning for Justice Curriculum of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Teaching Tolerance, We Stories, programs by Educational Equity Consultants, and "similar or successor curricula."

For good measure, it then bans any curriculum that teaches any version of American History that promotes as accurate any of the claims or views presented in the 1619 Project.
