Asking as an American, why are Americans so uneducated and clueless about the world, but at the same time the leaders of many sciences?

For instance, when it comes to geographic locations, culture, and politics Americans can be incredibly stupid. But on the other hand, American science and maths is among the best in the world. How can we fix this American cultural stupidity?
