What is the system for giving children grades in your country like?

Here in Bulgaria the teacher is allowed to give tests or make students do whatever whenever for grades. There isn't even anything too formal, like for example a test at the end of each half-semester.

So, what is it like for you? Are you proud of the grading system in your schools? Would you say it's more effective and better for the educational process in general than what I just described?

How much control do the teachers themselves have over the grading?

Do the teachers' notes have any say when it comes to results from nationwide exams? That is to say, is there an end-result formulated by a combination between the grade the teacher has given and the grade from the exam?
