What topics are covered in a language and composition class and an American literature class?

What topics are covered in a language and composition class and an American literature class? I’m a high school student and I barely understood my sophomore English class. Next year, I have to take both of these classes. Will I be okay? My skills are a bit rusty because sometimes I rushed through and didn’t understand. I also skimped through videos and rushed. I only passed tests and assignments because I could guess and retake tests multiple times until I got the answers right. I basically guessed and skimped and now I’m having a harder time going back in and reviewing the material. My American English class involves analyzing classical literature by classical authors, philosophy and their writing styles. Was sophomore English really important for both those classes? It said that it was an introduction to classical analysis reading and I skipped over most, to almost all of it. How can I fix this?
