A Brief Look at Socialism in Every Country

I have created a list of every country organized alphabetically, by continent, and their historical relations with attempts at socialism. I made this as a resource for my own historical research, but figured I should share it for anyone who could use a quick reference. Feel free to comment or DM me suggestions for edits!

Looking for general thoughts on Standardized Tests

Hello Everyone,

I am currently doing my MED and I am writing a research paper on standardized testing in public schools. I wanted to get some general impressions. Do you think they are effective? Accurate? A necessary evil? Is there a difference between how students used to take tests compared to students nowadays?

Any and all opinions are welcome, whether you are a teacher, parent, student, or just someone interested in education in general. I only ask that comments are kept civil and respectful. I have a section in my paper dedicated to general opinions on standardized testing, and while I can pull from newspaper articles, journals, blogs, etc, I thought the Reddit community would also have some great insights!

Please keep in mind that your posts here may be selected to be cited in the paper.

Again, thank you so much for any contributions!

Starting from scratch

My sister wants to start college from scratch, she never went. 28 years old. She doesn’t have reddit. We talked about this over lunch and I wasn’t much help because I went straight to college out of highschool. Law school is the end goal for her. What would be the best route to take from scratch to ultimately end up at a good law school? Does it matter to a good law school what community college she goes to for associates ? Assuming the path is community college for associates > bachelors at a different college and law school

What in your mind is one single thing that would improve the quality of education the most?

As the title says. I have been curious about it for a long time what the most important thing is from other perspectives. Is it things like newer books, more teachers, more equipment, more/better facilities, less bureaucracy, better qualifications for personal, etc.

I guess you can solve most of them with money so I am more interested in one branch/thing that you would you change to have the best impact ?

8th grade English prep for new student (advice request)

Greetings fellow educators!

I am a former SecEd teacher currently working overseas at a school in an Asian country. One of my students will be moving to the US next summer and going into the 8th grade, so I'd like to get her caught up in English as I feel once that's down, the other skills from other subjects should come easier. She is fairly high level, not quite native, but shouldn't struggle too much. The main concern I have is the difference in experience in regards to English class and writing/reading terms.

Basically, I would appreciate it if teachers could advise me as to what knowledge or skills she needs to be ready for 8th grade English. It's been over 10 years since I last taught in the States, but if I recall, the main goals were focused on different types of writing? Are there any terms or themes she should know like heroes journey or dystopias? I know it depends on the school and district and what not, but I'd like to get a general feel.

Thanks a bunches!

A good school district academic calendar maker?

I work for a school district in the US. We are planning for future calendars, however, I am having trouble finding an application that will allow me to plan the academic calendar and see the number of school days, hours, etc.

I know that there are calendar websites that you can use, but I am curious if a website exists that allow administrators to create an interactive academic calendar and see all of the info.

Thank you!

I am getting physically mad at our course material

We are learning about sinusoids in my precalc class and it could not be more useless to learn, I will literally never need to graph a sinewave function by hand in my entire life and I am getting so mad that this is what they are teaching me that it’s getting in the way of me doing my homework. It just makes me so mad that it feels like education isn’t the path to my future it’s more of an obstacle I need to overcome to get to my future.

Im just steaming rn why do we need to learn this sorry for the rant

Multi-school management system

<!--td {border: 1px solid #cccccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}-->A multi-school management system is an ideal solution for education institutes with multiple branches spread across different geographical locations. The software gives more control to the administrators and allows them to have a 360-degree view of all their branches on a single platform.

This is not about quality of education but in terms of real world biases for employers of hiring college and university graduates over individuals who graduated from a community college

I’m guessing newer companies are more likely to hire from anywhere with lower wages than higher well established companies that pay higher wages?

Suspected Falsified Documents - is it worth the fight?

TL / DR I believe my daughter’s principal falsified bullying investigation reports - is my state’s AOE going to be able to help?

Even with the tl / dr, I’m going to try to make this brief and factual, even with my emotions running high.

My daughter (11 - not a protected class and not harassment) has been bullied since the beginning of the school year. I officially reported the bullying 4 months ago. First investigation in November was substantiated, but nothing got better. Requested 3 others for different kids in December, January, and just this week in February. Had confirmation that all had enough evidence to initiate, but never got the initiation or conclusion letters that are required by state mandate / policy. Asked. Asked again. You see where this is going. Threatened to request a hearing with the school board if nothing got better and I didn’t get the documents.

Magically, the documents appeared on Thursday after the superintendent told me she couldn’t meet with me until after her meeting with the principal. Got the documents in hand finally (which the delay alone is a violation of policy), 2 substantiated, 1 not. I thought it was all suspect and figured the principal just falsified the docs that day and gave them to the superintendent, but can’t really prove that without a metadata scrape and digital forensics.

The docs have 2022 as the year, which, by February, who’s still accidentally writing that? I figured he probably just did a rush job of changing dates on documents when he was scrambling to produce something, especially since the rest of the letters are just templates language. But again - can’t prove it.

I looked closer and the December doc is dated 12/12/22, with the language “On December 12, 2022, I determined I was in possession of information…” I made the report on 12/6. He said he would have to get back to me because he wasn’t sure if the investigation would have to be brand new or an extension of the first one. Never got back to me. I followed up. He wrote on 12/13 “I did hear back from our legal counsel (just today, actually) that…another investigation would be required. But why would he initiate an investigation into children prior to receiving legal counsel? Mistakenly wrote the wrong date? Maybe? 12/6, 12/12, 12/13? None of the dates add up.

Aside from the fact that I had to chase him for the information to which I had a right, what makes me think he falsified those reports is that nothing has gotten any better and the school dances around further disciplining the bullies. They won’t even make non-disciplinary accommodations that don’t impact my daughter, saying they don’t have proof of repeat offenders. But they do. Lots of proof from emailed reports, all after those investigations allegedly took place. Which makes me think they won’t discipline the kids because they CAN’T discipline the kids. There’s no real paper trail that would support it.

My daughter has 14 bullies that she can name. Countless others that she doesn’t even know. If I go to my state’s Agency of Education with my suspicions and ask for help, will they even help me? Or will they just cover for one of their own? Needless to say, I am hesitant to trust anyone admin or higher in the school system at this point. All I want to do is to get these kids to leave my daughter alone.

Please help. I don’t know what else to do. I’m intelligent, educated, and I know my daughter’s rights. I was once an educator myself and I know how admin likes to cover things up. I have found countless statutes and policies that have definitively been violated, told them I knew they had been violated, and still no one at her school will do anything. Any advice is appreciated.

Unsure if I should fix/rewrite my paper

So not in college. But the job I work for will give me a raise if I complete a class and write a 30 page paper.

I took the class and wrote the paper and scored a 4.5/12. I need at least a 9 to get the raise.

They did give me specific and helpful feedback.

The issue is that the whole paper is a lie. I didn’t learn anything in the class (because I already knew it) so I can’t show any growth I made or research question I truly explored. I did just pick one.

Then all my data got removed before I had finished my paper because after the fiscal year it got reset. And while taking the class they said I only needed one data set but I actually needed 9. Which lead to more of me just making things up.

—-

It’s not that I don’t think I have more to learn on the subject - more-so the instructors clearly knew equal or less than I did. I was hoping to grow through this class.

Has anyone heard of or practiced academic/educational therapy?

I am almost done with my degree in special education. I also work at a therapy center that offers various forms of therapy for kids with disabilities. I keep thinking about how beneficial academic therapy could be for students. It wouldn’t be like tutoring as it may sound. It is focused on helping students build skills and positive associations with academic subjects and settings. For instance, if a student struggles with math and gets very stressed or overwhelmed with it easily at school, the student could work on that and getting more confident and comfortable with math in a therapy program that teaches them new tools and ways to approach and think about math. I have not seen a place that offers this kind of service around me. I’d love to practice it one day in schools, at a therapy center, or privately. Is this a growing field possibly? Does anyone here have an experience with it? I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

How can ChatGPT help us rethink education?

ChatGPT has triggered panic in academic circles. As students started using AI to write their homework, essays, and theses,  many universities and schools banned using AI for written assignments. The question we have to ask is - is the educational system adequate if it could make otherwise ethical students opt for unethical behavior? Can we rethink education?

Falsely Accusing Your Students Of Using ChatGPT To Write Their Essay? (It’s More Likely Than You Think!)

Greetings! I recently authored an article that highlights the importance of exercising caution when employing AI-generated content detectors in educational settings. Drawing on my background as a former teacher and current graduate student with a keen interest in the subject, I feel strongly about the need for careful consideration when it comes to implementing such technology.

In the article, I delve into the statistical concept of Bayes' Rule to illustrate that these detectors may yield a higher rate of false accusations than one might expect, despite their touted accuracy rates of 96% or 99%.

My hope is that this piece will serve as a valuable resource for both students and teachers as they navigate the complexities of AI-generated content in the classroom. Let's make informed decisions and find effective solutions to this issue together!

IT department at public schools

Hello,

I am a teacher from Spain and we have a big push to increase the presence of technology in our classes.

I like it and I am in charge of that part of my school. But the lack of knowledge of other teachers and different problems make it really hard.

Recently, we had a lot of money coming from Europe to pay for many devices but without resources to implement them or to do maintenance of them.

I wonder how this is organised in other countries, mainly European but any country would work.

TLDR: Do you have an IT department in your school? Is it public or private? Where is it located? How this implementation of new devices is coordinated? Any information you could give me about it?

There’s a math program geared to Black kids like mine. What’s wrong with that?

From Régine Michelle Jean-Charles:

On a hot day last summer, I roused two reluctant teenagers for what I anticipated would be an important experience, but also one I hoped they wouldn’t resent me for.

My 13- and 14-year-old boys were about to begin participating in a math program that would convene for three weeks on the campus of our public high school in Milton. The Calculus Project, which is offered in seven districts in Massachusetts and one in Florida, builds math skills in BIPOC and low-income students in grades 8-12. Its curriculum celebrates math and science scholars of color, providing inspiration and models of future selves for youths who have long been unable to see themselves reflected in these fields. It is the brainchild of Adrian Mims, whose research on excellence with equity inspired him in 2009 to create a program that would increase the representation and success of low-income students and students of color in high-level high school math courses — a key predictor of college success. His clear-eyed approach emerged out of a mindset of abundance rather than the deficit mindset that so often plagues educational policy. What if, rather than lament the achievement gap, we placed underrepresented students in a cohort of their peers and empowered them to soar? What if we created the conditions to excite students about what they are learning?

When they took the course, my boys — both diligent students but typical middle schoolers — were less than thrilled to have to “do math all summer.” Still, as parents we insisted that they participate based on what we knew about Mims’s vision and the stellar reviews from parents whose children had attended. By the end, my boys were grateful to have had the opportunity to learn in a community of their peers and to think about math in a way that ultimately inspired them. In our predominantly white suburb, our Black sons have had few occasions to be surrounded by people who looked like them in every class.

Today the Calculus Project is being targeted by a conservative group of parents who argue that it is “discriminatory.” On Feb. 14, a national parent organization filed a complaint against Milton Public Schools with the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, arguing that the school district is in violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment. The group, Parents Defending Education, is using a well-rehearsed script that weaponizes civil rights law to undermine advances in racial equality and justice. The group claims that because the Calculus Project is intended for students of color and low-income students it is unfairly excluding students who do not fit into those categories.

I'm thinking of changing schools, but for that I have to repeat the school year. I'm afraid to talk to my dad about it

Hey everyone, I've been dealing with a pretty big problem lately and I wanted to get some opinions on it. I'm currently studying at a federal school, and the pressure and monotony of it all is seriously taking a toll on my mental health. So, I've been thinking about switching to a private school.

But here's the catch: one of my technical course teachers doesn't really seem to care about teaching, and a lot of students end up failing his subject. If I do switch to a private school, I'll have to repeat the academic year since they don't allow you to pass a subject that you've previously failed.

Now, I know this might sound like a whim, but I promise it's not. My psychologist even thinks that incorporating other activities into my life would be really helpful, since my current routine doesn't allow for much of that. Plus, the private schools I'm considering are in great locations, so I'll have more opportunities to get out and about.

Not only that, but at a private school, I'd also have access to extra humanities classes that would help me prepare better for college entrance exams and college itself.

But, my dad is totally against the idea. He thinks that all the stress and pressure I'm dealing with now will be good for me in the long run, both academically and financially. I'm afraid to bring up the advantages of private schools because he might only focus on the money, even though we can afford it.

Even though I know I'd have to repeat the first year, I'm willing to do it if it means I can make a positive change in my life. So, what do you all think?

Which course should I choose?

Which field is a better option to study in college (in the UK) ?

I would start (in college) with computing with cyber security after computing with digital media and the final course would be Computer games development and after it I would maybe move to Uni.

On the other hand with social sciences I would start (in college) Social sciences Understanding human behaviour and society after it - Routes to Higher education and there would be an other 2 year course of Social sciences itself and would go to Uni after these courses

What type of work could I do with each field? Which one would be more beneficial?

Question on Schooling Process / Rules in US (Oregon) / (Expat)

Hi,

I have question on schooling rules in US / Oregon.

I am moving with my family from Amsterdam to Bethany, Oregon. I will be looking to enroll my 6 yr old in a public elementary school in that school district. I will have temporary housing for first few months before I have to find permanent housing.

So I am curious about the enrollment / school change process ? Do I have to immediately move schools for my son after I move out of that school district or there is some grace period by which I am able to let him finish the school year and then change the schools.

If there are any reading resources on the subject, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

What "free" degree should I get?

I'm a veteran with two years left on their GI bill. I have a BA in Spanish and Linguistics, and MA in Social Work (I'm an LCSW). I am not looking for a career change anytime soon. Before starting working from home, I was enrolled in an online MA program in Hospital Administration, but dropped before starting due to the new job. Now I have no desire to work in a hospital. However, I'd like to utilize my GI Bill. Linguistics is my first love and I'd love to get an MA in that, but my partner thinks it's useless. I'm just recently thinking of going to law school. I love to learn, am have always been very good at reading comprehension, writing, and speaking. I think I'd love learning about the law and I miss academia. Whatever I do, I'd be going to school for the sake of learning, but hopefully with career options down the line as well (later in life). Am I crazy to want to go to law school for fun? Only two years would be fully covered but I think I could get scholarships or personally fund the rest. Should I just go for the linguistics degree? Anyone have any other ideas? Must be an online or local hybrid program.

iv got a huge problem regarding my education

iv got a huge problem regarding my education for years now before i begin i just want to say that i am still REALLY young and that you should be polite and respectful in the comments, because i have been pulled out of school for many years now i cant reacive proper basic education, even i am at the age of most middleschoolers if i where in school i would be still in the seventh grade, the reason that i got expelled from school a long time ago is that i would have violent outburst's everytime i even got a math problem wrong, i can understand that i was i little bit of a threat to school safety when i had these outburst's but nowadays they are long gone and i have not had one for years, my mother has been trying to get me help for years but she tells me i have to get my anger issues fixed first but i think she does not notice how much i have improved since then, it sucks because this whole situation is really not under my control in the slightest, she says i need to go to a place where they can my issues fixed but it makes me really sad that she does not realize this issues are already fixed, i am pretty scared for my futhere because (from my understanding) you can not get a proper job without proper education, this really does scare me and i just want to go to school again but as i said none of this is in my Control and i do not fully understand the whole situation, also i have already been to a few place where they tried to get me into school again, the first one i stayed at 24/5 and was only allowed to go home Every weekend i think this one was the most helpful since it really solved a lot of the problems i have been having, i find it hard to understand why they can not just put me back into school again, im sorry if i misspelled many of the word because english is not my mother tongue, i do not seek for an answer to my problems but only someone who could potentially help me understand the situation a little bit more, please do remain respectfull and polite to me in the comments. (Edit i might have gotten the detaile's wrong i realize i think the reason why i could not go back to school i that i could not go from having zero education for years to having 100% education instantly, but even with this reason i still do not understand why, i am deeply sorry for wasting your time, but help in the comments would still be dearly appreciated)

Help choosing AP classes for high school

I am in 10th grade and have been in honors and maintained a 4.0 my whole school career. I am having a hard time deciding what AP or college classes to take my 11th grade year. These will be my first AP classes, all other have been honors. I have to choose between AP literature, AP history, and AP chemistry. I am dead set to take AP chemistry and pretty sure about taking AP history. My problem is with my English. My options are AP literature, concurrent english (college English with a local college and takes up 2 school hours), or regular english 3. English is definitely not my favorite or my strongest subject, probably my poorest but I still maintain an A/A+ in all current and past English classes. I am worried about ruining my 4.0 with the AP Lit or college english. I am being pushed by my family to do all 3 APs, but I am also a Athlete (baseball) and have a lot less time in the second semester. I am just worried about getting behind in class and overwhelming myself next year. I also hate reading but don’t really mind writing essays. Thanks for the help!

Innovative Method of Incorporating AI in Classroom

I'm sure that by now, most teachers have come across essays written by ChatGPT and articles about how it might be a threat to the education of students. However, it doesn't have to be that way. As the educational system changed when the internet became widely popular, a similar change might happen now. While some teachers might feel skeptical about AI tools, I believe that they have the potential to improve the way we teach and learn.

Here, I want to focus on some original ways in which you can use ChatGPT to improve your teaching and the student experience.

One fascinating way I found to integrate ChatGPT into teaching is by making it write essays on class topics and having the students analyze and provide feedback. This method requires the students to mark up the text and point out where ChatGPT has made mistakes. It is not only valuable for students in terms of critical thinking skills but also for teachers as they can see where their own knowledge of the subject might need improvement. This also think that this approach enhances the students' analytical skills and exposes them to the potential of AI.

Through the process of marking up the text and pointing out mistakes, students are learning how to adapt to AI and use it to their advantage. These are the essential skills that they will undoubtedly need in the workplace of the future. This approach encourages the development of technological literacy, making students comfortable with AI and its role in the future of work. Overall, this innovative teaching technique using ChatGPT has the potential to improve the students' academic performance and their future career prospects.

Let's take a look at how this method can be applied in law and history classes.

Law Classes

In law classes, ChatGPT can be used to generate hypothetical cases, providing students with a unique opportunity to analyze and evaluate various legal arguments. Students can mark up the text and point out any mistakes or biases that ChatGPT may have made in its legal analysis. By analyzing these cases and providing feedback, students can develop critical thinking skills and improve their understanding of complex legal concepts. This approach helps students to learn how to work with AI in a legal context, promoting their technological literacy and preparing them for the future of work in law.

History Classes

In history classes, ChatGPT can be used to write essays on historical events and figures, providing students with a new and exciting perspective on their studies. By marking up the text and pointing out any mistakes, students can develop their analytical skills and evaluate the accuracy of the AI-generated content. This approach can also help students gain a deeper understanding of historical events and their significance. Teachers can use this feedback to identify where students may be struggling with the subject matter and tailor their teaching methods to improve their understanding. This approach helps students to learn how to work with AI in a historical context, promoting their technological literacy and preparing them for the future of work in history-related fields.

But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Here creatives methods to implement ChatGPT into classroom

Politics surrounding educational spending within our country

Although the rules don't seem to go against this, just let me know if my post is not approved.

Hello, my name is Shawn. Recently, on my podcast, we discussed the issue surrounding the funding of education within the United States. Specifically, the issue of how the majority of funding comes from local property taxes.

This has since created an endless cycle of underfunded districts, never finding a way to climb out of despair. For when you have lower property taxes in poorer areas, those students end up going to underfunded schools. This starts them out at a major disadvantage. It also allows the cycle to keep getting worse. For they obtain a subpar education in these districts. This results in further issues securing careers that can allow them to afford to live in better areas. Since they ended up back in run-down neighborhoods, their children go to another underfunded school. This cycle continues and continues to create generations of people not given a proper chance.

My co-host and I discussed this issue in depth. We even provided a few avenues the US could take to have alleviated the issues surrounding such an underfunded educational system.

I am hoping to gain some insight from more people here apart of the Educational community. Did we cover the issue well? Are there any issues we missed? What about our solutions, do you agree or disagree with them?

Teachers should be substituted by technology example: chatGTP

It makes no sense to continue teaching younger generations, using old methods. Often, teachers make mistakes.

Teachers will also most likely use chatGTP, when they don't know the answer themselves. So, why not give directly students the students the tool to teach through AI.

Teaching is an obsolete job, that should be inherited by machines.

Looking for some direction

Hi! Im about to graduate with my Bachelors in Education. I'd like to know what career paths I could explore in education that are not teaching in the classroom. Through my program, I've leaned more toward the advocacy realm vs. being in the classroom. Or something that works directly with families. Would love some ideas! :)

Test and flashcards generation from class materials using ChatGPT

We are building an education tool called MonicAi for students and faculty to generate flashcards and test prep directly from their class materials like slides, notes, and books using a ChatGPT-like tech. The feedback so far has been phenomenal on the quality of flashcards. What do you think of the future adoption of this technology on high schools and college campuses both for students and educators?

Higher Education in Sweden

I have moved to Sweden in a year or so to study a STEM area in a university.

I noticed that here the pedagogy in all courses is centred in exercises, like weekly homework, usually challenging, in my previous educational experiences I have never had something like this. What I find more intriguing is that students seem to learn from the process of doing exercises, for me exercises would normally be to consolidate knowledge, not to actually learn from them.

I was used to read references and then exercises, but here I have the feeling that the standard is exercises and eventually references.

I would like to see what other people find about this?

I have a problem, made a solution to solve it, will it work?

I don't know a lot of things in math in 10th grade, I don't even know the basics as I didn't learn them (no attention in class in younger age) I want to pass in my board exams, I'm not scared of math like some others, but kinda like it when I understand the sums, so I made a pdf of literally maths from grade 1 to 10 ncert textbooks, in gonna read everything from the beginning until I find that exact point where I have trouble understanding and watch one shot lecture and literally re-do everything from that point and get marks, I get like 80% in everything els like science even though I just wing the tests and never study, I am gonna study now, 9 days left for boards, do you think this is possible?

Wit & Wonder vs. Bookmarks

My rural Michigan district is on the hunt for a new ELA curriculum and I am on the committee to help pick it. Our top two contenders are Bookmarks and Wit & Wisdom.

I'd love to hear from any teachers that have experience with these. We currently use MAISA and are looking for more rigor. Please let me know you grade level, too! I teach 4th, but want to hear from all grades.

If you have an ELA curriculum that you love, I'd love to hear about it.

Politicians, please stop saying, "We need to pay teachers more!" What we need is respect and support.

What do politicians always run on? "We need to pay teachers more!" But when parents receive their child's dismal state testing scores in the mail, they think, "Why would I pay someone more when they aren't doing their job?" We appear as a group to be incompetent and tone-deaf.

I want to hear politicians say, "We need to give teachers the support and respect they deserve. They need more from us to make our education system succeed." Those statements would also cover better pay, but it doesn't make us sound greedy and uncaring.

Teachers are perceived as losers. They pick a low-paying profession with little respect. If a teacher tries to change careers, they go into every job interview at a disadvantage. And, since there is a teacher shortage, if it's hard to pick between two candidates, then maybe it's for the greater good to leave the teacher in place. Once in, they are often stuck.

Do you think other teachers have noticed if I’m wearing rip jeans? Do y’all notice them at all?

What are the methods of teaching responsibility and commitment to university students?

*Sorry in advanced for bad English.

I'm not certain if this subreddit is for this type of question. I'm in my last year of university, doing a degree in criminology (in Mexico), I'm doing an investigation on forensic crime scene investigators, and how the acquisition of knowledge can facilitate or lead them to commit a crime. I'm focusing on the prevention side of things from an institute of higher education standpoint, so prevention starting from universities. After investigating for the past 2 months or so, professionals that have committed crimes in this line of work (ruling out mental health issues) seems to lack professional ethics, responsibility, and commitment (responsibility and commitment regarding their profession and to society). So, I took a look at the study plan for all grades and courses of the degree at the university I'm at, and there's only one subject relating to professional ethics for the whole 3 years. So, the idea here is so instill these teachings at this stage of their professional formation, but how? As educators, what would be the methods, study plans or strategies you would use? And if there is some article or study on the matter that would help too as I have not found any.

"Education should not be about molding children the way you want them, but about supporting their natural longing to know and blossom."

I came across this quote by Sadhguru, and I wanted to have a discussion about how this is paramount to understand for any educator. I cannot say that I was always met like this by my teachers. And that was quite frustrating because I was really curious as a child (still am). Had I just been in the right ambience, being in school might perhaps have been a totally different and enriching experience.

What do you think about this?

Changing Jobs from Small School to Large School

I've been a teacher in my small rural district for 12 years and I teach two subjects there. One of the subjects (a) I went to college for and have 2 degrees in. The other subject (b) is one I got an endorsement in later. I have taught both a and b for 12 years, though my duties in a have significantly decreased over time. This is also in a very small school district where we graduate 20-30 people each year - and that's as big as a grade would get. The district is just one k-12 building. Even though I grew up in a district where my graduating class was a few hundred students (and my high school was one of 4 in my town), I have come to love the small, tight-knit community at my current position. Additionally, I met my husband here and he is also a teacher in the district... just steps from where I teach. I love working with him. I'm considering making a change: I have an opportunity to teach in the district where I live for about $20k more a year and only teaching subject a. Additionally, our small child would end up also going to school in this district, so my schedule would be the same as hers during the school year, which I see as a benefit. I'm seriously considering applying. I am also seriously nervous that I won't like it and won't be able to "undo" this mistake (if it should end up being one). What changes should I expect? What should I be considering?

Do you truly need Notion or other notetakers?

Hey, Redditors! I'm a 1st year student and curious to know more about whether notetakers like Notion, Obsidian, Logseq or others truly help you in studying/educating or not.

I'm considering choosing one to use and would like to know more about their drawbacks especially. In order to be ready for some alternative costs, ofc

By this I mean that I want to get ready to some issues that I can encounter when trying to get used to <this super cool notetaker>

Nowadays the market of productivity tools is too overcrowded and it seems to me like all the apps are the same, just look in different ways. But as you know, visual representation is not the key thing in education. I've seen many videos in which people say that notetaking in such "smart" apps is just fiction and procrastination. You just feel "smart". But in fact you just create an information dump.

So, I decided to start a discussion here. Maybe you have any clues and things to share. Thanks in advance.

What‘s a service that educators or students will need with the inevitable ubiquity of ChatGPT?

For one of my projects in my masters program, I have to identify a specific “need” or “gap” in education. I decided to focus on Ai. But I’m having such a hard time coming up with a specific focus, so I thought I might ask here for ideas. Ironically, ChatGPT cant quite answer my question.

What gaps are there between education and the inevitable ubiquity that artificial intelligent machines like chatgpt will bring in? What services may need to be developed for students or educators?

My friend was never educated, what are their options?

The title says it all, their parents refused to teach them. Never sent to school and never homeschooled either. They begged their parents to give them homework and they never did. They are now 20 and only recently were able to get their license but still don't have a car to drive. Their mother died 4 years ago and they were her full time caretaker from 8 to 16 and their father is on his death bed. Both they and their parents are poor so suing is not really an option. Would this qualify as a disability? Could they sue the state or local government for failure to provide access to an education which is a guaranteed right? They can read and write, but struggle with even the most basic math, know almost nothing about history, or science. They tried to do the GED prep courses but without even fundamental elementary knowledge it was nearly impossible. Any suggestions on their steps moving forward?

Are we really getting more knowledge through fast consumerism?

Nowadays you get knowledge everywhere. It sometimes overwhelms me. Listening to summarized books in 20min (you could „read“ 10 books a day if you want), watching educational YouTube videos, podcasts, books etc.

But do we really get more knowledge that way? I often don’t know where to start because interesting topics seem to be everywhere. But if you start something new, you forget most of the stuff you studied before, because your brain thinks you don’t need that information anymore

Lower Circuit Stocks

In the stock market, the stock trading at some particular point would not fall beyond the set limit to prevent the loss. The set limit is called the lower circuit in the stock market. In this article, we will explain how to exit from lower circuit stock.

The price of the lower circuit depends on different factors, which can affect the market to no small extent. In short, we can say that the lower circuit is the benchmark until which stocks’ prices will go downwards on a particular trading day. Also, when the stocks go down, there are only sellers and no buyers, making it difficult to exit the trade.

What is Lower Circuit Limit?

The share market is all about the prices of stocks fluctuating, and this sudden rise and fall can create a panic for investors. During this time, the circuit works in full swing.

The inconsistent moment of the price, i.e., rising or falling in stock price, can often cause an upper or lower circuit. Moreover, this can cause a significant loss to the investor if you are involved in a falling market.

When the stock hits the lower circuit, there are no buyers; only sellers are there. In short, the lower circuit breaker is a regulatory tool that helps check that the price doesn’t go down much and loss does not increase.

Could a large percent of American middle and HS school students have PTSD? And if so, is it just American students?

An r/Teachers poster pointed out that middle and HS students just don't seem to care anymore. They don't dress to impress. They don't do their work. And, they get VERY touchy if you expect them to get off their cell phone/music source. Could it be a form of PTSD?

Here is what they may see or experience at school each day (on top of what they experience at home and in the community):

  • Sexual harassment
  • Bullying
  • Weapons - or the constant fear of weapons
  • Lockdowns
  • Teachers who cannot control the room (so how are they safe?)
  • Disabled students who legally need more support, but aren't getting what they need - and if the most vulnerable can't get what they need, then how does anyone?
  • Constant noise, chaos, and stink
  • Crumbling infrastructure
  • Teachers (some) who have given up, and others who are spitting into the wind
  • An obvious lack of administrative support for the teacher who is supposed to be getting them ready for the future
  • Possibly no recognizable future thanks to climate change
  • LGBTQ students who are not allowed to deviate from imposed religious norms - even though we pride ourselves on religious freedom

How can we expect them to buy into a mandatory system that is so hypocritical and unsafe?

Scrap Fees - Fund Education Properly

Universities produce the doctors, nurses, engineers, scientists, sociologists, teachers, economists, writers and thinkers that our society couldn’t function without. They produce research, manufacture vaccines, respond to economic and political crises and so much more.

The business model of education has completely failed. Universities are underfunded, jobs are insecure, working-class people and people of colour are shut out, the mental and physical health of both staff and students has been degraded, politicians have straw-manned universities as battlegrounds in their deranged culture wars - all while the market model fails on its own terms. Individual spending power is hampered by debt few will realistically pay back, restricting economic growth and placing a ticking time bomb under our economy.

There is a much simpler, tried and tested, way. We need to publicly fund higher education, provide it as a public good and a human right – just like we do with the NHS and with primary and secondary education – just like many countries across Europe and around the world do. We need a model that is sustainable, that is fair and that restores the integrity and true value of education in our society.

Trade Or College/Program

I am thinking of taking either one, a program or course around computers or a trade such as carpentry, electrician or metalwork.

I may have to do either one online and wanted to know what may be useful in the longrun since I am 18 now and want to have money to support my family and hopefully leave out a tiny town I am in sooner or later, oldest out of my siblings. Idk if I should still pursue college while I am working if I ever go the trade route and that self teaching myself aspects such as programming is worth it.

Willing to take any advice :)

Teaching English through dance to elementary students?

I'm based in Japan, and I run a company that teaches English, dance, and culture classes all in one to kids ages 2 to elementary, split into age appropriate groups. For the most part, it is me using tool as a dance to teach about different cultures around the world, and to teach any words and phrases related to the dance/culture in English. There may be a need for the elementary kids to do something more in depth when it comes to learning English, such as learning more in depth English vocabulary, grammar, etc. in addition to dance. Has anyone ever done something like this? Does anyone have any ideas of how I can incorporate more English learning in the dance lesson for elementary?

Help me understand this aspect of bullying

Why are parents discouraged from filing assault charges if a student commits an act that meets the legal definition of assault?

So many kids are committing suicide for bullying related issues. It seems that schools are hamstrung and I cannot tell if it's due to policies that the general public isn't aware of, or more political/cultural (like "boys will be boys" attitudes about behavior bordering on sexual harassment, telling parents not to report a kid because he will lose his scholarship money for being an athlete, etc.)

I just don't get why schools have ongoing bullying issues when parents could just call the police, file formal charges against the child, ultimately drop them if needed. Records are sealed or expunged once you're 18 so why doesn't this happen more?

Children's book on Consent

Hello, for a semester course project, my group and I must create a children's focus focusing on teaching consent. We have decided to attempt to explain safe boundaries and proper ways of handling situations specific to school, peers, faculty and consent. We would like to reach out to the education community with any ideas, comments, or guidance. We would greatly appreciate any examples of consent; our first example is a teacher practicing greeting her students with the options of "High five, fist bump, dance party, or hug". We also would like to touch on safe boundaries when it comes to microaggressions such as touching another students accommodations inappropriately or touching another student's hair, clothes, etc. Knowing how important inclusivity and language is to the education of young minds, we would also greatly appreciate any examples or corrections we could use to improve our educational process. Thank you

Suspensions

Hello,

I’m not sure whether this is an appropriate place to ask this, but I have a question about suspensions from school.

I have a sister, and she has just been suspended from 6th grade in Ohio. This is not her first. She has been suspended twice or 3 times before this one.

After how many suspensions is a recommendation for expulsion or an expulsion in general?

I’m aware this might differ between districts, counties, etc., so I’m fine with a vague answer.

Thanks! Again, apologies if this is an awkward question to post in here.

School Management System Trends in 2023 to watch out

Stay abreast with these school management trends and capitalize on their benefits. Here are 4 themes in education technology for the education sector that are likely to evolve and develop in 2023.

  • Cloud Technology

Cloud-based school management systems are more scalable and efficient. They give you access to data from anywhere and anytime and secure it through end-to-end encryption.

Using a cloud-based School Management System would allow education authorities to utilize data to its full potential and stay flexible in operations. Data management, real-time updates, and cross-platform usability of data can be increased through cloud-based education ERP solutions.

  • Effective and timely analysis

Access from anywhere and anytime does not mean compromising data security. With a strict focus on GDPR compliance, and the use of modern data protection strategies school management software such as Academia ERP provide guaranteed security to the personal and financial data of students, parents, staff, and organization.

Authorized users can securely access information to perform a variety of operations digitally. This includes getting granular reports on admissions, attendance, finances, student performance, resource allocation, maintenance, etc. The system updates the information in real-time and improves decisioning significantly.

  • Integrated systems

Easily integrated school management systems would be very popular in 2023. Right now, a school may be using a number of educational technologies in the ecosystem. The problem arises when they work in silos and do not share a centralized data repository to function in a unified manner.

Hence, modern school management software is likely to resolve it by offering a greater degree of integration. School management systems would become a centralized database, a unified platform that to and fro share the data with authorized users and tools to provide a wholesome work experience and improve communication, and data usability while reducing operational time. Check out complete Academia ERP integration options.

  • Automation

Automation is going to take a centre stage this year. There are tens of activities that tie up your resources in routine tasks every day — hampering their efficiency and productivity. With automation, you can pivot these tasks to technology and allow your resource to contribute towards the betterment of students and schools. Also, this significantly reduces your operational cost and time.

Are you ready?

If your current school management software misses any or all of these features it is time you think about change. Connect with our ERP experts and learn how Academia ERP can help you utilize modern technology trends and improve your institute’s functioning.

Plagiarism detection question

Hi everyone,

I'm doing some research on cross language plagiarism detection. I've noticed that there are companies like copyleaks or crossplag that claim to have a working solution for this. I would really like to see the results and whether or not it actually works in practice, but I can't afford to buy enough credits on both sites to get some sort of reasonable result. Have any of you ever used these services? Do you know of some other company that does cross language plagiarism detection? If you're a faculty member, do you use a plagiarism checker?

Thanks in advance for all answers!

It is too dangerous to be a teacher - You don't get to teach anyway

It is too dangerous to be a teacher. You don't get to teach anyway. Teachers have 32 students, four of whom have identified special needs - and a couple whose special needs have yet to be identified.

Administrators will no longer remove dangerous students from a classroom. They are paid nearly twice as much as teachers and are supposed to do all they can to support classroom education - but they claim that they can't remove disruptive and/or dangerous students. WHY?

Why do administrators get paid more to do less?

How do teachers deal with constant behaviors and still keep education on track? They are set up to fail.

Public school surveillance.. intrusive or non-intrusive?

"Cameras are something that aren’t intrusive, and we can be able to do the surveillance without kids even noticing that,” Tipp City Schools (OHIO) Director of Human Resources Dr. Lisa Tuttle-Huff said.

I find that statement incredibly wrong. The Tipp City district (OHIO) is receiving 500k for a surveillance system upgrade. They have 2,356 students in their school system.

I guess it just seems wrong to me that we are rolling this out aggressively all around the country right now. Hate to see it being touted as a way to perform surveillance without students noticing. Is it just me?

I’m Finally Getting My Diploma

Hi, I’m 19 years old I dropped out of High school at 17, not because I wanted to, because my parents never re-enrolled me into High-school, and I didn’t care enough to keep nagging them about it. When I turned 19 I became a Starbucks barista, my paychecks were insanely low and that’s when I decided to back to get my High School diploma! I enrolled in a thing called “Open Doors Program” through my community college and began my journey to a high school diploma. I went through a lot during the 9 months but with the support of my boyfriend, my instructors, and my insane motivation I am now graduating with a 4.0! Better late than never right?

If anyone of any age is thinking about going back to school to get a high school diploma or a GED I say GO FOR IT. It’s definitely worth it!

Does anyone else have a “mentor” for three years when you first start teaching?

I have this mentor that was assigned to me by the district. In my state we have the ability to finish up our license classes while we are initially teaching. That said, I ace every class. I have been teaching for a year and am doing well on evaluations.

Apparently this program goes on for three years. I feel frustrated because I think I’m learning well, my kids are doing great, and I’m even being requested by parents for next years’ classes.

This mentor does not want to listen to me, and insists that she’s here to support me while she continues to insist she knows what’s best about what I’m doing. I have a learning disorder and it makes me a better teacher, but she doesn’t want to explain things in a way I will understand. She’s also not consistently in my classroom anymore, so she’s just making conclusions about what I’m doing right/wrong based on her perception of what a good teacher is.

She doesn’t have a say in my evaluations, but my bosses are referring to her to make decisions about how I’m mentored.

Has anyone else had to deal with this? Do you have any advice for dealing with a situation like this?

The Praxis is a Moneymaking Racket

History Education Major seeking to get his praxis scores and background clearance before next semester. Honestly, this is mostly a rage post. It is abhorrent that one has to pay nearly 300 dollars to take the Praxis. Not only that, but the Fee Waiver demands a Student Aid Report depicting an Expected Family Contribution of less than $3,000 which really limits anyone that isn't coming from a horribly poverty stricken family to avoid this. What? Because I was lower middle class I have to be bled dry even more? Disgusting.

My wife is being harassed at her school.

She’s in the second semester of the full-time internship she needs to complete before becoming a school counselor. She works in the same office as this dweeb who will only call her “intern,” who regularly teases her about being too young and idealistic, and who makes really weird passive-aggressive digs at her personally.

He makes other people uncomfortable, too, but the office culture there writes it off as him being “weird” and “quirky.” The Trumpy principal there regularly laughs at his bad jokes.

I obviously want to find this guy and, let’s say, “coerce” him into adjusting his level of professionalism, but that’s not an actual option. My wife repeatedly asked him to stop, but he didn’t, and now she just plays along with it, but she hates it. She also refuses to go to HR about him because she’s afraid of retaliation.

I’ve tried telling her that I’ve worked in six different schools and have NEVER seen an intern treated like that - and that she needs to talk to someone in HR about this.

Are her concerns justified? Does she have ANY recourse here at all? Is there anything she can do to make this prick leave her alone?

Free Bachelor

Hi,

I am mid age and am strangling to find a job that pays a fineness salary and considering getting a Bsc to boost/reinitiate my career. Currently I am looking for any EU Bachelor offered free with ECTS offered and was looking for Information Technology related courses because my current financial state isn't the best and can't afford to further burden my monthly expenses as I have to pay for food, housing and bills and hardly there are any money left for clothing and fun.

As long as I've seen there are lot of public universities offering paid courses but haven't found any free or offered for online studies . Do they exist or have to rely on paid one program?

Safer Internet Day

The Internet has been an amazing invention that has undoubtedly change the world in more ways than we can think of. Not all of those ways, unfortunately, have been positive. We can connect to people faster, find things easier, and transfer information at the speed of light. These very boons of communication can become the bane of safety. So much of our private lives and information get transferred over the internet, Safer Internet Day reminds us to protect ourselves from the dangers there and make the internet a little safer for everyone.

The internet has been a boon and a curse for teenagers.
J. K. Rowling

History of Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day came to exist officially in 2012, when the US Department of Homeland Security and the European Commission decided it was time to help shepherd the growing beast that was the Internet into a playground that was safer for our youth. In America things got really going in 2013 when ConnectSafely.org was appointed to coordinate the efforts in the American theater, and they’ve been driving it forward a little more every year. Each year they choose a theme to help promote, and a goal that they intend to reach. What kinds of goals?

In 2015 they began to promote that year’s theme “Actions & Activism Toward a Better Net & World”, where they focused on concerns like bullying and integration with the National Parent Teacher Association, and working to use technology to help effect social change. This is a particularly powerful use of the tool, given that people from every walk of life and culture from around the world can connect and communicate in ways they never could before. That’s what the Internet was for, what it brought to us, and the world it helped bring together.

How to celebrate Safer Internet Day

The first thing you can do to Celebrate Safer Internet Day is work towards expanding your own online safety portfolio. Know what to do if you see cases of cyberbullying, and how to connect and communicate with people all over the world in areas of shared interest. Make sure your identity is solidly protected, and that the people who are in your life are protected as well. Even better, take a stop by connectsafely.org and check out the newest apps for protecting yourself and your children, and follow up on the breaking news about internet security.

What path should I take in Highschool Encore

I am a freshman currently in highschool, there's two options, I focus on taking Construction classes (3 years of Construction classes) or I focus on our classes of Agriculture and Science Related (called Biotechnology and Greenhouse which is two years.) I'm torn as there's benefits to both of them. I am unable to do both as that is a much larger load of stress because I have two class hours open, one probably for a study hall and the other likely for one of them. If I do one of them I will either have little to no time to do the other, what are your inputs?

How, and why, does the brain relate information?

Full disclosure, I'm a complete noob when it comes to education. If the answer to my question seems obvious, I'm sorry, but I didn't know where else to ask.

I've been watching videos in regard to "higher order learning" recently, and a central part seems to be relating ideas or "units" of knowledge with each other. I have two questions.

  1. What classes of relation does our mind form? Some obvious ones seem to be categorization, and cause and effect, but it'd be great if someone could give me a rundown, so I can make sure I'm not missing any important ones.
  2. How are these forms of relations benefitial to us?

A useful power: in California, teachers can suspend students - and principals cannot interfere

CA Ed. Code Section 48910 States: "A teacher may suspend any pupil from class, for any of the acts enumerated in Section 48900, for the day of the suspension and the day following."

The teacher must let the principal know right away and must contact the parent/guardian and set up a meeting to be convened on a day ASAP. S/he CAN invite the principal, but doesn't have to.

The student cannot be returned to the class that day, or the next unless the teacher agrees, PERIOD. If an administrator returns the student to that class before then, they have broken the law. The student cannot be sent to another teacher's class unless it is a class specifically set up for suspended students.

Once I realized that administrators weren't going to remove dangerous students, I did this regularly. I had been tenured long ago in the days when administrators took safety seriously so I didn't fear losing my job (actually, I prayed for it).

I have no idea how a teacher can get through probation if they use this tool. But once tenured, it could be powerful.

Better yet, if teachers have to do their job, which should be all about imparting skills, PLUS do the administrator's job, which should be all about supporting the educational process, then teachers should QUIT. Teaching used to be great. But now it is too dangerous physically and emotionally.

Video that discusses current US Education System

It’s kind of like Vox theme video. It talks about how the US Education system hasn’t really been updated since around the time of the Industrial Revolution, and how it was mostly designed to train factory workers to run the machines. It also mentions how societies today are now more driven and supported by creative artists and critical thinkers, and that the factory-worker inclined education system of 200 years ago no longer helps or provides tools for creative and critical thinkers.

Anybody help me find it?

University told my nephew not to bring discrimination complaints to them

Long story short my nephew is Jewish and has been facing antisemitism on his university campus (students refusing to work with him because he is Jewish, professor telling him and other students Jews weren’t not white unless they wear religious clothing, another professor referring to Zionism as the “Z” word, a student asking him if he was Jewish and yelling “fuck Israel, free Palestine” in his face when he answered yes) to the point he’s feeling disproportionately ostracized from the university and is afraid to openly identify himself as Jewish for fear of harassment from professors and students.

My nephew took these incidents to the university administration and was told that the university is not responsible for systemic environmental hostility on campus like antisemitism and he should take up issues of systemic antisemitism at the university with a local rabbi not the university administration.

Is this just passing the buck? Isn’t he entitled to title VI protections as a Jewish student under Executive order 13899? Any advice on what to do next? He’s been trying for months for the university to address this and they refuse to engage him despite multiple attempts to seek their help.

What will be the future for public education in inner-cities?

I live in the inner-city and out of the schools in my area the average percent proficiency in reading and math are 39% and 45%, respectively.

I do not have children but I would hesitate to send my children to the public schools in my area due to their low levels of academic achievement.

I often wonder if these students will ever be college ready and if the public school system in my city should invest more in vocational programs and “career centers” instead.

Is there a future for vocational programs in inner-city public school? I have seen them rarely implemented. Why is that?
