Principals- Do you feel you have true understanding of how much your teachers are doing?

I do not ask this question to be “another whiny teacher” but I am curious if leadership actually means it when they say, “we know you have a lot on your plate right now but...”

I know a lot of the demands are coming from the higher ups, but there is a lot that I feel can be done to make life just a tiny bit easier for teachers. It makes me wonder if principals simply don’t add up what is going on in the classroom everyday.

Some examples: - demand detailed lesson plans to be turned in each week - provide criticism after observing a few minutes in a classroom - hold lengthy faculty meetings with things that could have been said in an email - force team building activities among faculty after school hours - add on small tasks that tend to add up quickly- like hang a welcome sign outside our classroom door - expect teachers to be engaging all.day.long. And make them feel panicked if you happen to walk by when they are sitting at their desk.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Again, I am not trying to complain. I just don’t believe that one can truly understand how much we are dealing with unless they have taught in a classroom in the past 10 years.
