Graphics and Disadvantaged Students

Hi,

Does anyone know of researchers who are investigating the use of non verbal communication (like graphics) as a means to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds (who may lack high level reading skills)?

I'm a college educator and I've kind of stumbled into this area for a project I'm working on, but this is not my area of expertise.
